Small town. Big school.UC Davis is ranked 16th among public universities nationwide by the National Research Council, is listed 11th among public universities nationwide by U.S. News & World Report; and is 10th in research funding among all U.S. ranked public universities by the National Science Foundation. The campus is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, one of just 62 institutions of higher learning to be admitted to this distinguished group.

Founded in 1908 as the University Farm amid the fertile fields of the state’s Central Valley, UC Davis embarks on a centennial celebration during the 2008-09 academic year. The campus encompasses the colleges of Letters and Science, Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and professional schools in Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Education. It also operates the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, one of the leading teaching and research hospitals in the nation. In 2007, the campus announced a $100 million in founding support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to launch the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

This is a period of growth and change for UC Davis. The campus has seen growth in student, faculty and staff populations and is in the midst of more than $1 billion in new construction. New facilities do or will include new laboratories, new classrooms and new student sports and recreation facilities. Thanks to the generosity of one of the world’s most renowned winemakers,

groundbreaking took place in 2005 on the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2002 and is a showcase part of the campus.

UC Davis has enjoyed a distinguished history in athletics as it continues a new era in NCAA Division I. The Aggies are official members in most sports in the Big West Conference which includes fellow UC campuses Irvine, Riverside and Santa Barbara. The transition to Division I brought to an end a successful Division II era in which UC Davis captured six Directors’ Cups in eight years, awarded annually to the most successful athletics program in the country. UC Davis also twice received recognition from Sports Illustrated for Women as the top Div. II school for women while Sports Illustrated has also previously honored the institution. In addition to 26 varsity sports (14 for women and 12 for men), the campus offers nearly 40 student-organized club sports. Women's field hockey will become the 27th varsity sport when it begins competition in 2009. And each year, more than 19,000 students participate in intramural sports.

All students can enjoy abundant on- and off-campus recreational facilities for tennis, softball, basketball, volleyball and golf. Given the area’s Mediterranean climate, outdoor recreation continues year round. The program is also among the nation’s leaders in NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients and has had three winners of the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award, tied for the most among all schools in the country.

Welcome to Aggie VolleyballHere at UC Davis volleyball, we take pride in our roles as student-athletes. We play hard, study hard, but most of all, have a great time! Aside from the normal practicing and playing, we are involved in many other activities.

We are active in fundraising events, community outreach, youth camps, and other charitable pursuits. Our goal is not just to be volleyball players, but to be an integral part of the community and be contributing members of society.

Throughout the year, our players conduct clinics for local schools and many of them also help coach at our summer camps. At the local clinics, we help mentor the young kids and help them understand the importance of doing well in school, making good decisions, and being good people. These are some of the most rewarding activities we do. The youngsters just love interacting with our student-athletes and really look up to them.

There are many great reasons to be a part of our team, but one of the best is the opportunity to create great friendships with your teammates. Your teammates become like family and are some of your best friends. Players hang out together, go out together, and just have plain old fun together!

Every year, the Aggie Auction raises money for our athletics program. Our team joins every other athletics program to help the event run smoothly. It is a great time for the student-athletes, as

they know that their efforts help the program, but on top of that, it’s an opportunity to dress up!

We also raise money for others. A big part of Aggie Athletics is helping those who are less fortunate. Players are constantly involved with food drives, clothes drives, helping feed the homeless, raising money for disaster victims, and many other charitable endeavors. In 2007-08, the Big West Conference ran a competition among its member institutions to see which school was most active in charitable fundraisers... and we won!

Another great part of being a part of UC Davis Volleyball is the travel. We have been to Alaska, the Grand Canyon, New Mexico, Colorado and numerous other places. We love to travel outside of California if we can, so players can experience other parts of the country and meet new people and see different things. This is all part of the experience when you are part of the team.

As we establish our place in Division I and the Big West Conference, our goal is to become nationally recognized and make the NCAA Championships. As we immerse ourselves in this process, we also want our team to value the hard work that is required for success, but at the same time, enjoy the process and learn about themselves and others. Our program aims to teach skills beyond the volleyball court and to ensure that our team gets the most out of their college experience.

JAMIE HOLMES Head Coach3rd YearBethany ’94

Jamie Holmes became UC Davis’ ninth head women’s volleyball coach in March of 2008, making an impact during first two seasons at the helm. In her initial season, the Aggies posted as 12-17 record, tripling their win total from the previous year. Then in 2009, Holmes led UC Davis to a 20-10 record and a second-place 11-5 in the Big West Conference.

For her part, Holmes was selected as the league’s Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with UC Santa Barbara’s Kathy Gregory. The 20-win season marked the first by the program since 1996, when UC Davis was a member of the Division II non-scholarship Northern California Athletic Conference.

Holmes has also made efforts the advance her program outside the competition season. During the spring of 2009, while she completed her first Aggie recruiting class, Holmes embarked on an aggressive campaign of community outreach to engage the Davis vicinity in Aggie volleyball. In competition, her Aggie team – although only seven players deep – captured the four-person division of the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball tournament that May.

Holmes arrived at UC Davis after serving as the No. 1 assistant for Ohio State from 2002 through 2007. She was involved in all aspects of the Buckeye program, including on-court coaching, player development, recruiting, scouting, strength and conditioning, travel, public relations and academic monitoring.

In her six seasons at OSU, Holmes coached four American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Americans, most notably 2004 AVCA Player of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year Stacey Gordon. During that

span, Ohio State compiled a 122-65 overall record and made four NCAA tournament appearances. Additionally, Holmes’ recruiting efforts have re-sulted in nationally ranked freshman classes in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Before her arrival in Columbus, Holmes spent five years at Southwest Missouri State (now known as Missouri State) as the top assistant coach. In her tenure with the Bears, she helped transform the program from an 18-14 record in 1997 to a 25-5 ledger in 2001. Off the court, Holmes’ role as academic coordinator oversaw the team’s grade-point average rise from 3.18 in her first season to a 3.42 in 2001-02. Her skills in recruiting brought in the school’s first-ever AVCA All-America honoree and a Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. Additionally, Hol-mes served on the board of directors for Club Bear Volleyball, a youth development program.

Holmes previously served one year as head women’s coach for Evangel University in Springfield, Mo.; and a season as the head men’s coach at her alma mater of Bethany University. She graduated summa cum laude from Bethany in 1994, earning a B.A. degree in social science. Holmes also is completing her Master of Divinity from the Assembly of God Theological Seminary in Springfield.

Holmes’ arrival at UC Davis also served as a homecoming of sorts. She and her family resided in Davis until relocating to nearby Citrus Heights when she reached middle school.

“Look up and down the coastline of California, and there are not a lot of college-town communities. Then you look at UC Davis and you find that atmosphere,” Holmes said. “It is a great academic institution in a desirable place for young people. I just think there is so much success that can happen here.”

Holmes played club volleyball for Sacramento State head coach Debby Colberg, then spent three years (one as a redshirt) in the Hornet program from 1989 to 1991. She then completed her career at Bethany, serving as team captain in the 1992 and 1993 seasons. As a senior, Holmes led all NAIA players in kills per game and hitting percentage, earning All-Region and All-America honors from the AVCA.

Coaching Staff

Previously on the staffs at Regis and Jacksonville, Darren Buckner was selected as assistant UC Davis women’s volleyball coach, head coach Jamie Holmes has announced. Buckner, who replaced interim assistant Kip Yoshimura, joins Holmes and fourth-year assistant Addie Hauschild on the Aggie staff.

Buckner’s arrival at UC Davis marks a return both to collegiate coaching and to the Pacific coast. He served as the top assistant at Jack-sonville in 1993-94, then later coached at Division II Regis University from 2000-03. More recently, however, he owned and operated Big Line Construction in Bozeman, Mont.

Originally from Sandy, Ore., Buckner played collegiate volleyball at Golden West Community College in Huntington Beach, Calif. He also has competed at the USA Volleyball Open Championships. Buckner’s coaching career spans all levels of volleyball, including three nationally esteemed clubs: Nike NW Juniors (Portland, Ore.), Boulder VBC (Boul-der, Colo.) and Colorado Performance VBC (Denver, Colo.). He also has assisted with two Portland-area high schools and served on collegiate summer camps for more than 15 years.

Buckner graduated from Portland State in 2000, earning his degree in social sciences.

UC Davis posted a 20-10 record in 2009, finishing in a tie for second place in the Big West Conference. The win total is the program’s highest since the Aggies went 21-11 as a member of the Division II non-scholar-ship Northern California Athletic Conference.

Former U.S. National Team libero and Pacific All-American Addie Hauschild enters her fourth season with the Aggie women’s volleyball program. She is involved in all aspects of the program, including the role of recruiting coordinator.

Hauschild arrived at UC Davis by way of the Golden Bear Volleyball Club in Berkeley, Calif., where she served two years as an assistant coach. She previously served as head coach at the Colorado Springs School from 2003 to 2004.

Although a middle blocker as a collegiate player, Hauschild earned a spot as a libero on the U.S. National Team in 2002. In addition to her two-year stint with Team USA, she also played for the Minnesota Chill of the U.S. Professional Volleyball League, earning Libero of the Year honors in 2001. Hauschild has since retained her ties with USA Volleyball, serv-ing on staffs for Youth and Junior National Team camps and as a training coach at the National Team open tryout in Colorado Springs.

Originally from Sacramento, Calif. and Hiram Johnson High School, Hauschild enjoyed an outstanding career at Pacific before embarking on her professional and National Team career. She earned first-team AVCA All-Region and All-Big West Conference honors in 1996 and 1997, after capturing second-team nods as a sophomore in 1995.

Hauschild also earned Big West Freshman of the Year recognition in 1994, the same season Volleyball Monthly named her to its All-America squad. She finished her Tiger career with 955 kills, a .304 hitting aver-age, 116 aces, 1003 digs and 505 blocks. Through 2005, Hauschild continues to rank among Pacific’s all-time top 10 in hitting percentage and total blocks. She earned her B.A. degree in sports sciences from Pacific in 1998.

In 2007, Hauschild was selected as an assistant coach for USA Vol-leyball’s Select A1 team, which competed at the USAV High Performance Championships in July.

A graduate from Lindenwood University -- where he played as a setter/libero -- McLaughlin has had success coaching several clubs, in-cluding Capital City Volleyball Club and Force Volleyball club. He had also attended many clinics and camps from other universities including Stanford and California Berkeley.

McLaughlin is an excited young coach who is eager to help this program achieve its highest level of success. This year he will primarily be responsible for video.
