Season PreviewStony Brook University’s softball team has seen its win

total increase in each of the last four seasons, resulting in the most successful four-year span in school history. Entering this season with a senior class loaded with talent, experience and a winning mentality, head coach Megan Bryant expects the Seawolves’ winning ways to continue. With six freshmen on Stony Brook’s roster this season, the seven-member senior class – which has won both an America East Championship and regular-season title – will be looked upon for leadership and consistent per-formance.

With its entire rotation returning, pitching should be one of Stony Brook’s strongest assets along with its defense. “Offensively, we might look a little different from previous years,” said Bryant. “I think we are more versatile and have improved speed. We still have the potential to hit the long ball, but we will need to manufacture runs as well.”

We’re still searching for our team identity,” added Bry-ant, “but if we manage to stay healthy and have some players step up and fill the roles left behind by our gradu-ating class, I feel like we’ll have another successful sea-son.”

On pace to become one of Stony Brook’s most well-rounded players, senior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) anchors the Seawolves’ infield. Kavitsky has been a fixture at short stop for the Seawolves since arriving on campus. A three-time All-America East selection, Kavitsky’s leader-

ship will prove vital in solidifying SBU’s de-fense up in the middle.

Coming off a career-year offensively, senior Kendall Blumenthal (Frederick, Md.) will likely make the transi-tion from designated player to first base this year. An all-conference and Jewish Sports Review All-American last year, Blumenthal found her stride of-fensively and will be looked upon to drive in runs in the heart of the Seawolves’ lineup.

Senior Katelyn O’donnell (Kingston, Mass.) brings valuable versatility to the Seawolves infield with the abil-ity to play three defensive positions. A natural shortstop, O’Donnell could see time at both the hot corner and sec-ond base this spring.

A familiar presence behind the plate, senior Jade clare (Federal Way, Wash.) rounds out the experienced infield.

A consistent back-stop, Clare commit-ted just four errors last season and has a career fielding per-centage of .986. Her big game experience and comfort level with the Seawolves’ rotation will be valu-able.

Sophomore Ber-nadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) will look to break into

the Seawolves’ start-ing lineup this year after appearing in 21

games last season. A solid hitter, Tenuto was used pre-dominately as a pinch-hitter in 2009 and her ability to drive in runs could be key to the Seawolves’ success.

Stony Brook’s four freshmen infielders are a versatile group. Samantha rossi (Marlton, N.J.) brings good speed and a lefty slap approach to the plate. She’s a savvy base-runner with a knack for getting on base. Shannon O’Shea (Lake Worth, Fla.) is a fundamentally sound catcher with top level experience who knows the game and works well with the pitching staff. gina Bianculli (Oakdale, N.Y.) is a solid defensive player who has worked hard in the fall on her swing and the transition from short to second. Sarah landes (Telford, Pa.) can swing the bat and has the po-tential to be a middle of the order hitter. She could see time behind the plate and at either corner.

Stony Brook’s outfield rotation is led by senior crista cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.) who started 47 games in left field last season. A switch-hitter with solid speed, Cerrone found her home run swing in 2009, hitting the first four long balls of her career. Her ability to go deep coupled with her small-ball capabili-ties make her a dangerous hitter towards the top of the Seawolves order.

Junior Brijette Mar-tin (New York, N.Y.), who shared time in both corner outfield spots last year, could find herself patrol-ling center in 2010. With a strong arm and an athleti-cism which helps her track down balls in the gap, Mar-

tin finished second on the team with four outfield assists.

After starting 19 games in her fresh-man season, soph-omore Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.) could become a regular in right field. Highly com-petitive, Karath has improved offensive-ly and defensively while learning the outfield position. With good speed, Karath adds another dynamic to the Sea-wolves offense.

Challenging for playing time will be freshman Jerrica Kang (Lynwood, Wash.). A quick, aggressive fielder she is not afraid to go after balls most fielders allow to fall in. Offensively, she has shown good power and runs the bas-es well. After an impressive fall, Bryant is hoping Kang will continue to improve and mature this spring.

Featuring some highly decorated arms, Stony Brook’s pitching staff should be one of the strongest facets of the program this season. Led by two-time NFCA All-Region selection senior alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.), the Seawolves have set four single-season team records in the last two seasons. Entering the season just six wins and 35 strikeouts shy of becoming Stony Brook’s all-time lead-er, Struzenberg will look to guide the Sea-wolves to their third-consecutive America East Tournament.

Already the career-leader in saves, se-nior casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) is the yin to Struzenberg’s yang. Relying on im-peccable accuracy and varying speeds, Jacobs is a perfect change of pace fol-lowing the hard-throwing Struzen-berg. A spot starter,

she has shown ice in her veins by coming up with clutch performances out of the bullpen in the previous two sea-sons.

Rounding out the staff are junior colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) and freshman Taylor chain (Gloucester, N.J.). Matthes has shown glimpses of becoming a dominant pitcher, evidenced by her complete game shutout of Rhode Is-land last season. With an extra year of expe-rience under her belt, Coach Bryant is look-ing for consistency from the sophomore. Chain comes to Stony Brook with a winner’s attitude and fierce competitor’s spirit. While she is still ad-justing to the college game, she has show promise in the circle and can swing the bat as well.

Facing six teams that finished within the top 100 in RPI last season, Stony Brook’s 53-game schedule is one of the most challenging in school history. The schedule fea-tures games against 12 different conferences including the Atlantic 10, ACC, Big Ten and Big East. Stony Brook’s non-conference schedule features four tournaments start-ing with the Charlotte First Pitch Classic. The Seawolves travel to compete in the North Carolina State Wolfpack Challenge and the University of South Florida Tournament prior to hosting the Stony Brook Invitational.

The also challenging America East schedule kicks off on March 27 when SBU travels to Baltimore, Maryland to play UMBC. Stony Brook also faces Boston University and Binghamton in road series, while hosting Hartford, Al-bany and Maine.

“This should be a very interesting race,” said Bryant. “The league will be a challenge top to bottom this season. With the number of talented senior pitchers around the conference, it may come down to who can support those pitchers offensively.”

Coaching Staff

Megan T. Bryant became Stony Brook’s head softball coach in 2001 and has won 20 or more games every season since. She is the winningest coach in Stony Brook softball history with more than 240 career victories with the Seawolves.

Bryant made school history in 2008 when she led the Seawolves to their first-ever America East Championship and into the NCAA Tournament. Stony Brook made history for the second-straight season in 2009, winning its first-ever America East regular season Championship and a program-best 36 total wins. For her efforts, Bryant was named the 2009 America East Coach of the Year.

During her tenure, Bryant’s players have received numerous national and conference accolades. She has coached six NFCA All-Region players, 13 All-America East selections, seven Ameri-ca East All-Rookie team players, one America East Pitcher of the Year winner and three Stony Brook Female Athletes of the Year.

As successful as Bryant’s teams have been on the diamond, they have enjoyed equal success in the classroom. Her teams traditionally have one of the highest GPA’s among Stony Brook’s female teams and since 2006 have placed six players on the America East All-Academic team.

Prior to Stony Brook, Bryant served as the head coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, from 1988-99. Before Bryant’s ar-rival, the Bulldogs had endured five straight losing seasons and three straight last-place finishes in the Missouri Valley Confer-

ence. After a 13-44 finish her first season, Bryant led Drake to a 33-24 record, 10-6 in the MVC, in 1990, which earned her MVC Coach of the Year accolades. In 1993, just four years after her arrival, Drake won both the MVC regular season and tournament

Coaching Stafftitles while compiling a 35-16 record (13-3 MVC), the most wins in a season in school history. Bryant once again received MVC Coach of the Year honors. In 1994, Drake repeated as MVC Tournament champions and obtained a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Bull-dogs registered winning records six times and finished in the top four in the MVC five times in the last eight seasons Bryant was at the helm.

Bryant began her college coaching career at Stetson University in Deland, Fla., where she compiled a 63-30 record as head coach from 1985-87. Bryant inherited a program that had begun just the season before her arrival, and in her first season led Stetson to the New South Athletic Conference championship in 1986, receiv-ing NSAC Coach of the Year honors. Stetson repeated as NSAC champions in 1987. Bryant has also served as an assistant coach at both Furman University in Greenville, S.C., in 1988 and at St. John’s Unviersity.

Bryant also spent four years as a physical education instructor and head coach at Lakeland High School in Shrub Oak, N.Y., from 1981-85.

In addition to her coaching expertise, Bryant has also served on two NCAA Certification Review Equity Subcommittees and as a member of the NCAA Division I Softball Midwest Region Committee from 1994-95.

Bryant graduated from the University of Bridgeport in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, K-12. She competed in both volleyball and softball at Bridgeport.

Coaching StaffMelissa Bieman enters her fourth season as an assistant coach

at Stony Brook. Bieman’s main responsibility is with the Seawolves’ pitchers, a staff that has experienced unprecedented success since her arrival in 2007.

During her time at Stony Brook, the Seawolves pitching staff has a 2.38 ERA and a .626 winning percentage. Under Bieman’s guidance the Seawolves have set five school records. In 2009, SBU broke the individual saves (5), lowest team ERA (2.05), most wins (36) and most strikeouts

in a game (17) records. The previous season, Alyssa Struzenberg set the record for most wins by a pitcher (24). Struzenberg also won the America East Pitcher of the Year award, which was a first in school history.

Prior to Stony Brook, Bieman was an assistant coach at Binghamton University, working with the pitchers and hitters, including her sister, Mia. Before Binghamton, Bieman was the pitch-ing coach at Briarcliffe College in Bethpage, N.Y. from 2002-2005. Briarcliffe qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) World Series in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, Briarcliffe finished third at the NJCAA World Series.

Bieman began her collegiate playing career at the Florida Community College at Jacksonville. In her freshman year at F.C.C.J., Bieman led the nation in ERA with a 0.26 along with a 23-4 record and 198 strikeouts and earned all-state and all-conference honors. A preseason All-America selec-tion, Bieman went 14-5 in her sophomore year and was chosen all-state and all-conference for a second consecutive year. Bieman transferred to Syracuse University in its inaugural season and recorded the first home run, hit and shutout in the program’s history. Bieman started in all 48 games in 2000 and graduated in 2001 with a degree in consumer studies.

Following a stellar collegiate career, Bieman played for the Waitakere Bears of the New Zealand Women’s Premier Softball League. Bieman was the Bears’ MVP in 2001 and represented Auckland in the National Softball Tournament, earn-ing All-Tournament Team. In 2002 and 2003, Bieman was selected to attend the Canadian Women’s National Softball Team tryouts.

Bieman was inducted into the North Huron Community Center Wall of Fame in July of 2004. Bieman won double gold at the Provincial Women’s Softball Association Championships and the Canadian Women’s National Softball Championshps in Montreal in the summer of ̀ 06. Bieman won gold again in 2009, leading the Kitchner Krush to the Canadian Senior Women’s Fastpitch Championship.

Bree Nasti is in her fourth season as an assistant coach at Stony Brook. Nasti’s main responsibility is with the Seawolves’ hitters. She also works closely with the outfielders.

Under Nasti’s tutelage, the Seawolves offense has hit for power, averaging 33 home runs and more than 68 doubles a season, and for average, posting the highest team batting average in 2009 (.299) since joining the Division I ranks.

In 2009, Stony Brook set school records in RBI (231), runs (251), doubles (79), stolen baes (75) and slugging percentage (.475). Under Nasti they’ve also

A 2004 graduate of Buffalo with a degree in psychology, Nasti owns virtually every Bulls’ offensive record. Administration

On July 23, 2003, President Shirley Strum Kenny introduced Jim Fiore as the ninth Director of Athlet-ics in Stony Brook University history stating “Jim has the energy, drive, enthusiasm and intelligence to take this program, in the tradition of Stony Brook, very far, very fast.” At the time of his hire Fiore was one of the youngest Directors of Athletics in NCAA Division I.

Since his arrival at Stony Book from Princeton University in August 2003, Fiore has hit the ground running and pointed Stony Brook on an aggressive course for success in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. He has undertaken a major restructuring of the intercollegiate athletics program including the hiring of new coaching and administra-tive staff, dramatic facility upgrades and improved revenue generation.

Fiore’s vision for Stony Brook Athletics has resulted in unprecedented growth for the program. Following its championship season in 2005, the football program was elevated to the NCAA Division 1 full scholarship level and in April 2006, Fiore an-nounced that the program would upgrade to Independent status for the 2007 season and accepted an invitation into the Big South Conference as an associate member for football only in 2008. In doing so, he has assured the long-term future of Stony Brook football, enabling the program to compete for a national championship along-side institutions with similar academic and athletic standards. In addition, his dynamic imaging and branding campaign has given Stony Brook Athletics a national scope. During the 2005-2006 academic year, Stony Brook inked a multi year agreement with Madison Square Garden (MSG) Network to broadcast Seawolves athletics, the first television deal in the program’s history. In January 2006, the department also launched The Stony Brook Sports Report, a 30-week television show that is produced on campus and aired nationally on CBSTV. Fiore also spearheaded the bid that re-sulted in Stony Brook being awarded the opportunity to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse North Quarterfinals in May 2006.

Fiore’s grand design has produced dramatic results and a series of firsts for Stony Brook. In 2004 the baseball team won its first America East title and went to the NCAA Tournament. In the fall of 2005, the football program secured its first-ever conference title in its Division I history. On the same day that the football team won a champion-ship, the men’s soccer team capped off its regular season title by capturing its first America East tournament crown to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The men’s soccer team went on to notch Stony Brook’s first NCAA playoff victory with a first-round win over Yale. Success continued during the winter months as the women’s basketball team put together the second-best turnaround in Division I, go-ing from 8-20 in 2004-2005 to a 20-10 mark in 2005-2006. Along the way, the team defeated nationally-ranked Temple en route to receiving the program’s first-ever post-season bid, a trip to the 2006 WNIT. In the spring of 2005, the men’s lacrosse team garnered its first-ever Top 20 ranking in the 16-year history of the program and is now regularly ranked in the top-20. Under Fiore’s leadership Stony Brook won its first ever Division I conference championships in women’s sports in 2007 as the women’s lacrosse, cross country and volleyball teams all won titles.

Fiore has also turned his attention to department-wide fundraising efforts, with his efforts seeing a dramatic increase in major gifts, annual giving revenue and overall volume of donors. In an effort to take a lead role in the university’s $300 million capital campaign, the Department of Athletics has secured several major gifts, three of which were the largest philanthropic gifts given to athletics in its history. In July 2005, the athletic department adopted a new philosophy for the annual Providing Athletes With Support (P.A.W.S.) fundraising campaign, a philosophy that streamlined the annual fundraising process to prepare Stony Brook to exceed all fundraising expectations in the future. In addition, he created the Athletic Director Advisory Council; a 19-mem-ber board comprised of Stony Brook alumni, staff and community members that will advise Fiore in the fundraising advancement process.

His attention to the bottom line resulted in a new athletic department budget process that relieved the department of a multi million dollar debt and an annual systemic deficit, resulting in a balanced budget. The first time that Stony Brook has realized that goal since moving to the Division I level. Fiore has seen the department balance its budget every year since 2004 and has overseen a dramatic budget growth to $23 million. Beginning in the ‘04-’05 academic year Stony Brook University Athletics real-ized a near 20 percent increase in its operating budget due to new revenue streams for the department. Additionally, Stony Brook has teamed up with Islanders Media Inc. as the athletic department continues to nurture and foster strong bonds with the Long Island corporate community.

Fiore has secured $30 million from New York State for athletic facility renovations to the Stony Brook University Basketball Arena, Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium and various other athletic facilities. In December 2003, Stony Brook retained HOK, the

premier sports architectural firm in the nation, to formulate and develop a master plan for the future of Stony Brook athletic facilities. The blueprint has taken hold: Stony Brook unveiled the new Goldstein Student-Athlete Development Center in the spring of 2006, a center made possible through a gift from Stony Brook alum and former All-American squash player Stuart Goldstein ‘74. The 6,000-square foot state-of-the-art facility can accommodate over 400 student-athletes and features a computer lab, a study hall/multipurpose function room, a career resource/library area and several pri-vate tutor rooms, the men’s and women’s basketball programs received state of the art locker rooms, lounges and video rooms in fall 2008, a $1.2 million renovation to the Pritchard Gymnasium basketball/volleyball complex was completed in November 2008, the football, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and visiting team locker rooms in LaValle Stadium were redesigned and enhanced for $1,000,000. The baseball/softball complex received a facelift with the addition of new bleachers and press boxes, the strength and conditioning facility was renovated and expanded, plans for a $6 million expansion to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium that will include increased seat-ing by 2,000 and new Club and V.I.P. seating. Additionally a $20 million renovation of the Stony Brook University Basketball arena will commence Spring 2009. The base-ball field will be enhanced, renovated and re-named in honor of Joe Nathan and his $500K major gift to the Athletic Department and specifically the baseball program.

Under Fiore’s leadership, Stony Brook student-athletes have also attained new levels of achievement in the classroom. Since his arrival to Stony Brook, the GPA for Amer-ica East Seawolf student-athletes has risen from 2.86 in 2003 to a 3.08 in the Fall of 2008. In the fall of 2008, 15 of 20 teams earned team GPAs above 3.0 and 57 percent of Stony Brook’s America East Fall student-athletes were named to the America East Honor Roll or the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll for earning above a 3.0 or 3.5 GPA respectively. The ‘07-’08 academic year proved to be Stony Brook’s most successful season academically as its student-athletes compiled a department best overall G.P.A. of 3.06 and saw over 250 student-athletes named to the America East Honor Rolls - the most since joining the America East in 2001. Coinciding with this success, the 6,000-square foot state-of-the-art Goldstein Student-Athlete Develop-ment Center has proven to be an advantage in recruiting and for current Seawolves student-athletes.

During his tenure, Fiore has instituted a “Book of the Year” program for coaches and staff which highlight important topics relevant to professional and personal develop-ment, culminating with the author’s visit to campus and discussion with the entire staff. He has also guided Stony Brook through the essential and formative NCAA Certification process, helped redesign the athletic logo and athletic website, devel-oped a new comprehensive student-athlete exit survey and head coach performance evaluation instrument, implemented mandatory drug testing, and unveiled an athletic department strategic plan through 2012. In the fall of 2004, Fiore implemented a Minority Apprentice program to assist in the development of young professionals in intercollegiate athletics.

His list of accomplishments has not gone unnoticed. In December 2007 Fiore was named the Sports Man of the Year by The Village Times Herald and in the fall of 2004 he was recognized by the Long Island Business Association as one of the Top 40 executives under the age of 40 on Long Island.

Fiore currently serves on University President Shirley Strum Kenny’s Cabinet and was also appointed by Kenny to co-chair the strategic plan for image and identity committee. He has also served on the honorary degree, weekend life, NCAA certifi-cation and the university sponsorship committees. In 2005 he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the America East Conference and currently serves as the Chairman of the group. Fiore also is a member of the NCAA Division I Champion-ships/Sports Management Cabinet and has been appointed to the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel. In August of 2008 he was appointed to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) executive board.

Recently, he was named to the Dowling College Sports Management Board of Direc-tors and in June 2004, Fiore was a featured speaker at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention in Dallas, Texas. Prior to his arrival at Stony Brook, he provided department-wide leadership in support of the director of athletics at Princeton University from 1999-2003, a program that supports 38 sports, 40 club sports programs and more than 1,000 student-athletes. A member of the senior management team, he was responsible for all athletic programming oversight of all varsity intercollegiate programs. In addition, Fiore directed all person-nel matters including the coordination of national searches for coaches, staff and administrative positions. Along with the director of athletics, he also assisted in the planning for short and long-term capital improvements. During Fiore’s tenure, Princ-eton achieved extraordinary success on the fields of play and in the classroom.

Prior to Dartmouth, Fiore interned at Princeton (1994-1995) for one year during which he assisted the director of athletics on assigned projects. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Springfield College before moving on to be an assistant to the

Executive Director of the National Invitation Tournament during the spring and sum-mer of 1993. One year later he took an internship in the compliance office at Fordham University.

A native of Long Beach, N.Y, Fiore graduated from Long Beach High School and went on to attain his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hofstra University, where he played free safety for the football team. Upon graduation from Hofstra, Fiore went on to receive a master’s degree in Education from Springfield College. Additionally, he received a certificate from The Sports Management Institute held at the University of Notre Dame and University of South Carolina.

Fiore and his wife Lisa have a son Michael who is seven years old. They currently reside in Stony Brook.
