Cheryl Carlson is set to begin her seventh year as Head Volleyball Coach at Stetson University and 14th season as an NCAA Division I head coach.

An ongoing battle with illness and injury may have put a dent in the team’s on-court record in 2009, but Carlson’s recruiting acumen proved sharp as rookie setter Kelli Carneal was an instant triple threat with her passing, hitting and defense. Carlson’s prize recruit of the class, Carneal earned A-Sun All-Freshman Team honors.

Th e 2008 season saw the graduation of Carlson’s fi rst four-year recruit, outside hitter Rebecca Orzechowicz. Under Carlson’s guidance, Orzechowicz developed into one of the top players in Stetson history, compiling 1,114 kills (seventh all-time at SU) and 1,094 digs (second all-time) to become just the fi fth Hatter ever to reach 1,000 in both categories.

In 2007, she led the Hatters to an 11-15 overall record and 4-7 in Atlantic Sun conference play, the team’s best record since 2002. Stetson won its fi nal four matches of the season, making Carlson the only coach in program history to win 10 matches three times in four years since the NCAA reduced the season in 1992. Stetson’s season-ending win over Flagler College on November 6 marked her 125th career victory.

In her fi rst season at Stetson, Carlson helped guide the Hatters to 10 wins, including triumphs over South Alabama, Lehigh and UCF. In fact, Stetson’s 3-0 win over UCF on Oct. 30 was the Hatters’ fi rst victory over the Knights since 1987. Stetson surged late in the season with a 7-4 record over its fi nal 11 games.

Carlson arrived at Stetson following a 12-year stint at Virginia Commonwealth University, which included seven years as head coach and fi ve years as an assistant.

From 1995-2001, Carlson’s teams combined for a 86-133 record, including an 18-12 mark in 2000. For three years Carlson also worked as an administrator in the VCU athletic department, serving as Director of Community Outreach, Life Skills Coordinator and Assistant Compliance Director.

Carlson has also coached the Richmond Volleyball Club Junior program, leading her team to a regional championship in fi ve out of six years and to a national tournament appearance for six straight years.

A former USA Volleyball player and coach, Carlson was the USAV Old Dominion Region Vice President and Eligibility Chair from 2002-04. She was responsible for the Coaching Development program as well as writing the region’s Mission, Vision and Values Statement.

Prior to her seven-year head-coaching stint, Carlson served as the VCU assistant coach for fi ve seasons. She helped coordinate all facets of the program, including scheduling, recruiting, fundraising and conditioning.

From 1983-88, Carlson served as athletics director, coach and teacher at Good Shepard Episcopal School, and later worked in the same capacity at Luther Memorial School (1988-90). She also served as an associate for the Governor’s Alliance for a Drug-Free Virginia Foundation from 1989-94.

A 1983 graduate of the University of Virginia, Carlson was a member of the Cavaliers varsity volleyball team from 1980-82. She has received two Master’s Degrees from VCU: A Master of Science in Exercise Physiology in 1995 and a Master of Science in Sports Leadership in 2002. Carlson is also a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Jeff Altier, a 26-year veteran of the Stetson University athletic department, is in his 15th year as Stetson’s Director of Athletics. During his tenure, Altier has earned a reputation as an outstanding fundraiser and a leader with an eye on the future, and is noted for his active participation in the NCAA gover-nance structure.

Altier, captain of the nationally-ranked 1982 Hatter baseball team, earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stetson. Upon wrapping up his Stetson baseball career, he spent two years as a player/coach developing the sport in Perth, Australia. He then returned to Stetson as an assistant coach before being promoted to Ticket Manager, Director of Athletic Promotions, and then Associate Athletic Director. In these rolls, he spearheaded the department’s development eff orts as well as oversaw athletic marketing and promotions, concessions and travel coordination. He was named Director of Athletics in 1996.

Altier also served as Tournament Manager for the NCAA Division I South-east First and Second Round Men’s basketball tournament hosted by Stetson in 1993 and 1996 at the Orlando Arena, and as Tournament Director for the 1999 and 2004 tournament.

Stetson has taken great strides in the area of gender equity under Altier, increasing scholarships, participation opportunities and staffi ng for women’s athletics. Th e unprecedented success of the women’s tennis, golf, soccer, basketball and softball teams in conference competition during Altier’s tenure are evidence of his commitment to women’s athletics. Under his direction Stetson’s women’s and men’s teams have won 15 conference championships.

A hallmark of Altier’s professional career was the building of Stetson’s $4.5 million baseball facility, Melching Field at Conrad Park. Built in conjunction with the City of DeLand, Melching Field is regarded as one of the nation’s premiere college baseball facilities. Altier then turned his attention to con-struction of an on-campus softball facility, which broke ground in 2002 and was ready for competition in February of 2003. Th e Patricia Wilson Field has been named Collegiate Softball Field of the Year ___ times. He was also in-strumental in securing new state-of-the-art fi eld lighting for both the softball and soccer fi elds in 2005. Under his guidance, the Athletic Department has seen the addition of the new Wilson Athletic Center, a $ 1.5 million health and wellness facility for the use of Stetson student-athletes. Altier’s leadership has extended beyond campus, as he has taken on Atlantic Sun Conference leadership roles, chairing many committees and serving as conference vice-president. Additionally, he has served on the National Associ-ation of College Directors of Athletics Division IAAA board of directors, the NCAA A.E.C. Cabinet and is currently a member of the prestigious NCAA Leadership Council. Locally he has served as president of the DeLand Rotary Club, vice-president of the DeLand Sports Redevelopment Association, and is a graduate of Leadership DeLand and Leadership Orlando. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the Central Florida Sports Commission. Altier was honored as the West Volusia Sportsperson of the Year for 2004.

Altier’s family includes wife, Sarah (Booker) (Stetson B.A. ’82, M.Ed. ’96), and children Heath (Stetson M.B.A. ’09), Brianne, and Garrett.

Stetson University entered a new era of leadership in July 2009 when Dr.

Wendy B. Libby became the university’s ninth president. Dr. Libby is now in

her second year at Stetson.

Formerly president of Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., the nation’s second-

oldest women’s institution, Libby has had a broad career in higher education

and private industry. An expert in strategic planning, she plans to build on

Stetson’s values-centered heritage and tradition of academic excellence and

community-engaged service learning while moving Stetson forward.

Prior to her six years at Stephens College, Libby served as vice president for

business aff airs and chief fi nancial offi cer at Furman University, Greenville,

S.C., from 1995 to 2003. She has 29 years of administrative and teaching

experience in higher education, at institutions including Westbrook College

(now part of the University of New England), the University of Hartford,

the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Th e Ohio State

University and Cornell University.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Libby earned her doctorate in Educational

Administration from the University of Connecticut. Her undergraduate

degree, in Biology with a concentration in Genetics, is from Cornell University.

She earned an MBA, with a concentration in Finance, from Cornell’s Johnson

Graduate School of Management.

Libby is a member of numerous higher education organizations. Last fall,

she led a delegation of six college presidents in a visit to Ewha University in

Seoul, South Korea. In honor of her outstanding leadership, Libby received

the 2007 Athena Award from the Columbia (Mo.) Chamber of Commerce

Women’s Network for her support of women in realizing their full leadership

potential and for contributing to the quality of life in the community. In May,

she received the 2009 Outstanding Higher Education Professional Alumni

Award at the University of Connecticut.

She and her husband, Dr. Richard M. Libby, have two sons, Glenn and wife

Atlantic Sun C

onference

This is the Atlantic SunFor more than 30 years the Atlantic Sun Conference has stood for achievement with integrity in both the academic and athletic arenas with a focus on the balance between the two for its student-athletes. Th e A-Sun boasts a blend of the most dynamic and prestigious private and public institutions in the region, with all committed to the conference goal of Building Winners for Life.

Building

Continuing a tradition of academic achievement, a record 60 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2009-10 academic year. Lipscomb edged out Belmont, the seven-time winner of the All-Academic Trophy, to win its fi rst such trophy with close to 72 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better.

Several Bisons teams received national recognition for their success in the classroom. Both the men’s and women’s track & fi eld teams posted team GPAs among the top fi ve in the nation - the only school in the country to boast that distinction. Jacksonville’s women’s track team received their ninth straight USTFCCCA All-Academic honor. Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team posted the ninth best GPA in the country and the conference champion volleyball team led fi ve A-Sun schools in receiving an AVCA Team Academic Award.

Th e Stetson men’s tennis team led the nation with nine student-athletes earning the honor of Scholar Athlete from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. A total of fi ve A-Sun schools and 24 student-athletes received recogntion from the ITA. Stetson and Belmont joined only 16 other Division I schools considered an All-Academic squad in both men’s and women’s tennis.

For the fi rst time the NCAA released single-year APR for Division I head coaches in six sports dating back to 2003-04, the beginning of the program. All 11 A-Sun schools produced a coach who had a year of a perfect score of 1000 and the league produced a total of 25 seasons with scores of 1000. Seven of the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball recorded at least one score of 1000 and fi ve teams had a score of 1000 in 2008-09, the most recent year recorded by the NCAA.

Winners

Four A-Sun teams received Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association All-Sports Trophies in recognition of their performances in NCAA postseason play. Lipscomb’s softball team, ETSU’s men’s tennis squad plus UNF’s men’s golf team and women’s tennis carried the conference to the third-highest total by any one conference.

Golf continued to boom in the conference as three league members on the women’s side advanced to NCAA play for the fi rst time in conference play. Women’s golf became the fi rst sport in the conference to produce three NCAA participants since baseball in 2003. At the NCAA Regionals, ETSU’s Nina Muehl opened with an 8-under 64, the single lowest round carded in all of Division I golf and became just the second golfer from the A-Sun to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships.

Th e Ospreys’ men’s golf team spent the year ranked among the top programs in the country alongside ETSU. Both advanced to NCAA postseason play and the Ospreys made the nationals for the fi rst time as a conference member. Sophomore Sean Dale earned All-America honors and qualifi ed for the US Amateur, as did his teammates Kevin Alywin and Kevin Phelan. Phelan opened his summer by qualifying for the US Open at Pebble Beach. ETSU’s Rhys Enoch tied for the individual title at the NCAA East Regional and his play carried into summer as he made his second Palmer Cup team and advanced all the way to the quarterfi nals of the British Amateur.

Individual performances stood out on the diamond as FGCU’s Chris Sale became a consensus All-America en route to becoming the conference’s fourth fi rst-round pick in the last two years. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman contended for the national triple crown and burst onto the national scene by winning the fi rst-ever home run derby competition - contested at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Mercer’s Jacob Tanis fi nished

one RBI shy of the national lead in pacing the Bears back to the top of the A-Sun for the fi rst time in more than 25 years.

In softball, two hurlers established themselves among the best in the nation. Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and USC Upstate’s Morgan Childers each topped the 30-win mark - a fi rst for the conference. Th e two traded the national lead in ERA throughout the season and when the year came to a close, Kiihnl fi nished with the best mark in the nation with Childers taking a close second. Kiihnl and Childers ranked second and third in the country in fewest hits allowed per seven innings.

For the fi rst time in league history, the conference’s last remaining charter member, Mercer, hosted the General Shale Brick Basketball Championships. Th e hosts advanced to the fi nal of the men’s event setting up a standing-room-only event at the University Center against ETSU. In the end the Buccaneers won back-to-back titles. Jacksonville advanced to the NIT for the straight second year and provided the league’s fi rst win in the event since 1996 when Ben Smith connected on a game-winning 3-pointer in the fi nal seconds to stun top-seeded Arizona State.

On the women’s side ETSU became the third A-Sun school to win three straight titles, FGCU advanced to the WNIT for a third consecutive year and USC Upstate registered its fi rst 20-win season as a Divisioon I program.

For LifeAlums from the Atlantic Sun, both recent and historic continued to excel at the highest levels. Within the span of three days, FGCU produced its fi rst two major league baseball players. Two pitchers of the Eagles’ 2008 A-Sun Championship squad, Casey Coleman and Sale, took their talents to Chicago as Coleman broke in with the Cubs and Sale soared through the White Sox system after spending less than two months in the minors. In late June, former Stetson All-American Chris Johnson returned to the Astros lineup and hit over .380 his fi rst two months as a regular.

On the links, former ETSU star Rhys Davies has posted a solid rookie season on the European Tour. In the spring he picked up his fi rst win and added back-to-back runner-up fi nishes to move into the top 50 in the world for the fi rst time as a professional. One of his second-place showings occurred at the Wales Open where he closed with a record nine-under-par round 62 on the Ryder Cup course at the Celtic Manor. His stellar play placed Davies eighth on ESPN’s “Top 25 Golfers Under 25” list. Th e conference will have representation at the Ryder Cup as former league individual champion Colin Montgomerie (1985 with former member Houston Baptist) will captain the European team. Montgomerie will be the second conference alum to lead a Ryder Cup squad. Hal Sutton (Centenary) served as captain for the United States in 2004.
