New Jersey®

Special Olympics New Jersey is a statewide, sports training and athletic

competition program that provides year-round opportunities to children

and adults with intellectual disabilities, completely free of charge.

More than 21,000 athletes train and compete through local school,

agency and community programs. Athletes compete at area, sectional

and statewide levels during four sports seasons. All competitions are

conducted by certified sports officials according to National Governing

Body sports rules.

WHAT

The 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games in

Lincoln, Nebraska will unite the country through sport

and serve as a living legacy of founder Eunice Kennedy

Shriver. These Games will provide an opportunity to

showcase and celebrate the Special Olympics movement

and athletes, while illustrating the power of sports

to educate and inform about the true abilities and

achievements of people with intellectual disabilities.

While providing opportunities for all to get involved, the

USA National Games will present a nationwide platform

to engage youth as “agents of change” to foster and

promote unity, inclusion, acceptance, respect, dignity

and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities.

Opening Ceremonies will include an exciting and

entertaining show with the Parade of Athletes, the

culmination of the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement

Torch Run and lighting of the Special Olympics

Opening and Closing Ceremonies are

two of the most anticipated celebrations

of each and every Special Olympics

Games. Athletes, coaches, volunteers,

families and friends come together by

the thousands to kick off the Games and

bring the competition to a close.

2010 USA NATiONAL GAMES SiGNATURE EVENTS

Since officially launching in 1997 as

a Special Olympics program, Healthy

Athletes has grown to provide seven

different health screenings - Fit Feet,

FUNfitness, Healthy Hearing, Health

Promotion, Opening Eyes, MedFest and

Special Smiles - with the goal to improve

athletes’ ability to train and compete.

All of the athletes competing at the

2010 USA National Games are eligible to

receive free health screenings provided

by licensed medicare professionals.

ThE SporTS ExpEriENCE

The Sports Experience is a promotional

event held during National Games in

which each Special Olympics sponsor

is given a booth to highlight their

organization while supporting Special

Olympics and its athletes.

C E S S N A A i r L i F T

in July 2010, Cessna Citation owners will

come together to transport more than

3,500 Special Olympics athletes and

coaches from across the United States

to Lincoln, Nebraska, for the National

Games. Corporations and individual

owners and operators donate their

Citation business jets, pilots and fuel to

transport athletes to the Games.

Over 100 High School Honor Students are

brought to Omaha along with 50 - 100

Special Olympics athletes to go through

an intensive leadership program. The

program is specifically developed by the

Gallup organization and assists athletes

in becoming self-advocates and teaches

public speaking.

FouNdEr’S rECEpTioN

The Founder’s Reception is Special

Olympics’ signature reception. it is

a high profile event, celebrating the

mission and robust history of Special

Olympics while we honor Eunice

Kennedy Shriver’s legacy. The Founder’s

Reception will be held on Monday, July

19, 2010 in La Vista, Nebraska. More

than 500 guests will be in attendance.

Statement of Purpose

Special Olympics, incorporated is a worldwide program of sports training and athletic competition open to individuals with intellectual disabilities regardless of their abilities. The international Olympic Committee has granted its official recognition to Special Olympics, incorporated.

Mission

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Vision

Special Olympics New Jersey will be the premier non-profit sports organization worldwide, known for excellence and innovation in providing opportunities that enrich the lives of its athletes, their families and society as a whole.

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, Young Athletes must be 21/2 - 7 years old, or athletes must be at least 8 years old, and identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disability; a cognitive delay as determined by standardized measures such as intelligence quotient or other generally accepted measures; or a closely related developmental disability, i.e., functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills. There is no cost to participate in Special Olympics New Jersey. All prospective athletes must register to participate in Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Style Guide

Words matter. Words can open doors to cultivate the understanding and respect that enable peoplewith disabilities to lead fuller, more independent lives. Words can also create barriers or stereotypes that are not only demeaning to people with disabilities, but also rob them of their individuality. The following language guidelines have been developed by experts for use by anyone writing or speaking about people with intellectual disabilities to ensure that all people are portrayed with individuality and dignity.

Appropriate TerminologyRefer to participants in Special Olympics as Special Olympics athletes rather than SpecialOlympians or Special Olympic athletes.Refer to individuals, persons or people with intellectual disabilities, rather than intellectuallydisabled people or the intellectually disabled.A person has intellectual disabilities, rather than is suffering from, is afflicted with or is a victim of mental retardation/intellectual disabilities.Distinguish between adults and children with intellectual disabilities. Use adults or children, orolder or younger athletes.A person uses a wheelchair, rather than is confined or restricted to a wheelchair."Down syndrome" has replaced Down s Syndrome and mongoloid.Refer to participants in Special Olympics as athletes. In no case should the word athletes appearin quotation marks.When writing, refer to persons with a disability in the same style as persons without a disability: full name on first reference and last name on subsequent references. Do not refer to an individual with intellectual disabilities as "Bill" rather than the journalistically correct "Bill Smith" or "Smith."A person has a physical disability rather than crippled.Use the words "Special Olympics" when referring to the worldwide Special Olympics movement.

Terminology to AvoidDo not use the label "kids" when referring to Special Olympics athletes. Adult athletes are anintegral part of the movement.Do not use the word "the" in front of Special Olympics unless describing a specific SpecialOlympics event or official.Do not use the adjective "unfortunate" when talking about persons with an intellectual disability.Disabling conditions do not have to be life-defining in a negative way.Do not sensationalize the accomplishments of persons with disabilities. While theseaccomplishments should be recognized and applauded, people in the disability rights movement have tried to make the public aware of the negative impact of referring to the achievements of people with physical or intellectual disabilities with excessive hyperbole.Use the word "special" with extreme care when talking about persons with intellectual disabilities.The term, if used excessively in references to Special Olympics athletes and activities, can become a cliché.
