It is with gratitude and great enthusiasm that I welcome organizers, support crews, racers, residents, and visitors to the 2010 Solomons Offshore Grand Prix. This year’s race is being brought to you by Bayside Chevrolet, GEICO, and the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association. The event is the Offshore Performance Association (OPA) National Championship. The boats range in lengths up to 47 feet, and travel at speeds in excess of 100mph. The crew is competing for a $25,000 purse, as well as national ranking. This is the second to last stop for the series. With a title on the line, racing will be awesome!

Organizers will be working to provide you with unparalleled racing, something for which the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association is well known. The Race Committee has a wealth of experience and is dedicated to safe and competitive racing. A weekend celebration in Solomons has been planned around this national event. There will be a golf tournament, poker run, live music, food and, performance boats. Crews from the racing boats will be available to talk about their sport.

We are excited to bring to you our special guests, the Captains of the Time Bandit, from Discovery’s hit show the ―Deadliest Catch‖. Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand will be at Solomons Yachting Center for an autograph signing session Saturday night.

Hello OPA Race Fans,

Have you noticed a buzz of excitement in the air? A certain extra bit of anticipation, some extra traffic on the roads, extra people in hotels? That’s because the OPA boats are coming to Solomons on September 30th through October 3rd to tear up your waters in search of a checkered flag. Once people see these boats race, they keep coming back year after year to enjoy the event and cheer on their favorite teams.

For people who have never been to an OPA race before, they might ask, ―What is the Offshore Powerboat Association?‖. That answer all depends on who’s answering the question. A racer would say, ―This is where we come to get our fix, an adrenaline rush unlike any other.‖. This is where we come to test our skills and abilities against the best in the world. This is where we come to race and gain points in a quest for a National Championship. This is where we come to have fun in a very special way, unlike anything else known to mankind.

If a spectator gave the answer, it might sound like this, ―The OPA offers a great weekend of family oriented entertainment at little to no cost.‖. The OPA Race Village (the pits) is available to the public and kids of all ages. You shouldn’t be shy about asking questions of the teams, or for an autograph. Racers have even been known to allow children to climb inside the boats and have their photos taken. Take your family, walk through the Race Village, and get to know the teams so you will know who to root for on when the green flag drops.

You are invited to get involved, learn the teams, understand the classes, join the parties, and thoroughly enjoy the experience. This is one sport where spectators don’t just have to sit on the sidelines; they are encouraged to get close to the action, before, during and after the race.

I n every form of high-speed motor racing flags are used to let race

officials communicate with the competitors on the course. Offshore racing is no different. Even though the race is held on the open water, flags are a necessary link in the line of communications.

YELLOW—CAUTION Unlike auto racing, where a yellow flag cautions the drivers about an accident, debris, or some other obstacle, offshore racing uses the

yellow flag as a caution flag during the parade lap, when boats are in the milling area, and when the officials bring the boats to the starting line in a paced start. The flag is

located in the pace boat.

BLACK Course is closed. Return to pits and do not leave the pits.

TWO HANDS WAVED OVER

HEAD Immediate medical assistance required.

ORANGE This is the offshore flag. All check boats will fly one 3x5 foot orange pennant with a large black number. Below that flies

the Blue Coral Gables flag, below that the White Fireboy flag. The start/finish boat flies dual sets of three flags.

FLAGS

GREEN Signals the start of the race course is clear. On display in time between five minute and one-minute signal as well as while race is underway, except

for the last lap.

RED Stop! The race is halted. Return to milling area.

BLUE OR WHITE

Signals that there is a problem on the race course. Like the yellow flag, these flags tell the racers to proceed with caution.

HAND SIGNALS Race officials and competitors use hand signals as another form of communication.

THUMBS UP Okay, racer will then return to the medical helicopter post-race for doctor check.

HANDS CLASPED OVER

HEAD Okay—no help is needed at this time.

NO SIGNAL Immediate response by nearest person not required. Racers are instructed to never remove safety equipment until well and aboard rescue craft.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF WATCHING LIGHTENING ON THE WATER

Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) offers one of the most extreme sports known to mankind. With speeds approaching two hundred miles per hour, the stresses are ferocious, beyond brutal, on both man and machine. During a race, teams can experience G-Forces up to six times normal, providing spine bending pressures that test the metal of the crews to the breaking point. The more horsepower a boat has, the higher the stress levels and a greater chance for a component in the drivetrain or hull to fail. In order to win, the engines have to live at full throttle for almost an hour, the gears in the outdrive need to hold together and those thin pieces of stainless steel called the blades of the propeller need to stay intact. It’s actually amazing when everything does hold up under these almost impossible conditions. To propel their boats, most teams opt to use gasoline driven piston engines, but a new trend is emerging toward Turbine Technology and it’s always interesting to watch as these two modes of propulsion dice it out on the racecourse, which is the ultimate proving ground for any new technology.

The Boats

It takes a team to race an offshore powerboat. You’ll notice that there are two people under those canopies piloting each craft. One person drives the boat and that’s his only job, steer the boat around the buoys without hitting anyone else. The other person is called the throttleman and he – or she- controls the boat’s speed and attitude. The throttleman works the throttles, drive trim, tab trim and tunnel flap trim. The Throttleman is also able to move weight in the boat during the race by filling and emptying water ballast tanks, or by pumping fuel between tanks. The throttleman’s main objective is to maximize the boat’s speeds for any given sea condition and to make sure that the boat remains level in flight.

These boats fly! When the water gets lumpy with waves, these boats launch off the swells and fly as much as twenty feet out of the water and for distances up to two hundred feet before landing again (hopefully upright). A bad flight can end violently if the nose of the boat stuffs into an oncoming wave. In opposition, when a boat is running across the wave tops, skipping from one to the next at high speeds, for a sustained length of time, it is pure poetry in motion, a sight that will give any adrenaline junky the chills.

Some people enjoy watching the helicopters as much as the race boats. You’ll notice several helicopters overhead when the race boats are on the course. You can tell when things are going to get started by the presence of helicopters in the air. During the races, at least one helicopter is carrying jump paramedics, ready to assist a flipped boat at a moments notice. The other airships carry TV cameras and photographers from the media. Some boats will even have their own dedicated rescue team flying overhead, because when speeds approach two hundred miles per hour, things can go real bad, real fast.

The Pits

In order to get the most out of your experience at the OPA boat races, you need to start the day by taking a walk through the Pits. You’ll find that this type of racing is far different than anything else you’ve ever seen. There’s no stadium, very few fences and even fewer locations that the public is not allowed to access, such as the crane area where the boats are lifted into the water. Other than near the cranes, visitors are invited to get up close and personal with the teams. Meet the drivers and throttlemen, ask for an autograph and if you have kids, ask if they can sit in the boat. You’ll find the whole experience is very fan friendly and family oriented. By the time you leave the race village, you’ll know the teams on a more personal basis and have someone to root for on Sunday.

The boats will start to arrive on Thursday and everyone must be in the Pits by 4PM on Saturday. On Saturday, the Pits will be alive with activity as the teams prepare to test on the race course. It’s a busy day as boats are going in and out of the water and running around the race course all afternoon.

On Sunday starting at noon, OPA will have three separate races with typically three starts per race. Each race is a different length. The smaller boats will race at 12 Noon and will go about 8 – 10 laps, for a total 40

miles. The next group of boats will race at 1:30, these boats are larger and faster and will run about 12 laps around the four mile course. It all seems like a warm up act for the final race of the day. At 3PM the big boats come out and race at mind mending speeds for 16 to 18 laps around the four mile course.

In each race, noon, 1:30 and 3pm, there are also 3 individual starts that can be seen by the three separate Pace Boats. OPA has a total of 10 classes of boats and this is how we separate them so that they can run in their individual classes. This is where having a race program comes in handy so you can follow what classes are running. Also bring an FM radio and flip around the dial, the races are usually broadcast on a local radio station. Or if you can’t get to the races, you can listen to them live on www.supercatracing.com.

There are ten classes of boats in OPA Racing that share in the $50,000 prize purse and there are two classes that run as exhibition only. The five classes that share in the purse all run sealed Mercury Racing engines. This sealed engine program makes for very tight racing and removes the ability for one team to outspend the other teams when it comes to buying horsepower. The sealed engine program also allows the inspectors to avoid tearing down the engines after the race. Typically, these sealed engines that come from Mercury are so dependable that they can run for two full seasons without being touched other than oil changes. The exhibition classes run a much looser rulebook where the number of engines and size of the engines are unlimited.

OPA Racing Classes:

Class 6 - Single engine boats only with a 70mph top speed.

Class 5 – Boats to 32’ capable of 75mph.

Class 4 – Twin engine vee hull boats with a top speed of 85mph.

Class 3 – Twin engine Cats and Vees capable of 95mph.

Class 1 – Twin engine cats or vees capable of 115 mph. Boats must have canopies.

Vee Lite – This is the only class that has one engine, all other classes have two. These boats have a top speed of about 92MPH and typical race speeds are in the mid 80s. These are Vee hull boats, approximately 30’ in length. The engines are Mercury Racing 525s with a bravo style outdrive.

Super Stock – This class is the only class that uses outboard engines. Two – Two hundred and eighty horsepower Mercury Racing outboards clamped onto catamaran hulls approximately 32’ in length. These boats have a tops speed of about 115mph.

Super Vee – These are the big bad Vee bottoms, typically from Fountain Powerboats. They are between 36 and 42 feet and have two Mercury Racing 525s with number six outdrives. Top speed is about 112MPH

Cat Lite – These are catamaran hulls between 32 and 38 feet, and use two Mercury Racing 525s to achieve speeds in the 120s.

Super Cat – These are the fastest boats in our spec class fleet. They range in size from 38’ to 44’ in length. These boats run engines that make about 750 Horsepower each, the American boats run 510 Cubic Inch V8 engines while the Qatar boats opt for 12 cylinder Lamborghini’s. Propeller selection is limited to keep speeds in the mid 150s.

Extreme Class - No rules. Build as much horsepower as you can and hope that it stays together. Gas engines or turbine engines, choose your weapon. The boats in this Extreme Class like, Miss Geico and JBS can all achieve speeds in excess of 180MPH. These are the most incredible racing machines in the world and it takes a lot of guts, nerve and just a touch of insanity to drive them at these speeds, especially when the water gets bumpy.

When the day is done come back to the Tiki Bar and enjoy the evening’s festivities. The awards ceremony for the winners will take place at 7pm and everyone is welcome to come and cheer for their favorite team.
