Georgia College & State UniversityFounded in 1889, Georgia College has grown from an ini-

tial enrollment of 88 women from within the state to an annu-

al count of more than 5,500 male and female students from all

over the world.

Georgia College, originally founded as the sister institution

to Georgia Tech, is now the designated public liberal arts uni-

versity for the state of Georgia. Georgia College began as

Georgia Normal and Industrial College, offering young women

educational opportunities in teaching, office skills and econom-

ics. Georgia College has been co-educational since 1967.

Georgia College’s schools of Liberal Arts and Sciences,

Business, Education, and Health Sciences are fully accredited.

The University also distinguishes itself by taking advantage of

expanding technology resources such as electronic classrooms,

an interlibrary network system, and distance learning centers.

Georgia College’s range of degree programs is the broad-

est in the midstate, with more than 80 degree programs at the

undergraduate and graduate levels offered by a highly qualified

faculty in a supportive environment. As Georgia’s public liberal

arts university, Georgia College is committed to the founda-

tions of the liber-

al arts education:

p r e p a r a t i o n ,

adaptation, and

an approach to

life with a broad-

and was also the first to implement admission requirements

for completion of the high school College Preparatory

College is located

in Milledgeville, the antebellum capital of Georgia. The white

columns and spacious lawns of the main campus cover several

blocks of downtown Milledgeville. The block occupied by the

oldest part of the college was Milledgeville’s Penitentiary Square

through most of the 19th Century. The peach-colored stucco

mansion was home to Georgia’s governors from 1838 to 1868.

At the Milledgeville campus, the new complements the

old. In the last two decades, the college has restored or reno-

vated many historic structures and adapted them for office and

classroom use. Since 2002, new state-of-the-art residence halls

have been built and the library has undergone a major expan-

sion. A diverse student body, spirited faculty, and dedicated

administration study and work in many of the city’s historic

houses and buildings.

Georgia. The Russell Library underwent a $19.5 million expansion and

renovation to form the Georgia College Library and Information

Technology Center and added 93,000 square feet to the existing struc-

ture. It was re-opened in 2004 and houses more than 180,000 hard-

bound volumes and subscribes to more than 14,000 print and electron-

Continually striving for academic excellence, Georgia

College & State University has long prided itself as one of the

finest institutions of learning in the southeast. In its early years

the university was renowned for training teachers; more recent-

ly it has grown into the liberal arts university of the University

System of Georgia. The institution offers more than 100 degree

programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. More than

60 percent of Georgia College’s faculty holds the doctoral degree,

and the majority are actively involved in research in their fields.

The Georgia College Athletic Department is committed to

student-athlete excellence both on and off the playing field. The

coaching staffs at Georgia College have committed themselves to

recruiting student-athletes who are academically capable and

motivated to obtain a college degrees. All potential student ath-

letes must be granted admission into the university and cleared

through the NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse.

The moment a student-athlete decides Georgia College is

the right place to be, the athletic department provides personal

support, academic counseling and professional development to

ensure that they will get the most of their years wearing the

Green and Blue. The Georgia College Athletic Department has

set up an academic support program which provides tutoring

services to student-athletes, is designed to help and encourage

athletes to excel in the classroom.

The women’s basketball program at Georgia College has

taken additional steps to ensure that its student-athletes earn a

degree. The Mentor Program teams a returning Georgia College

player with a newcomer in order to assist with classwork and

personal development. Newcomers also attend weekly organiza-

tional sessions that emphasize time management.

Continuing its tradition of leadership in education, Georgia

College is the first of the state’s universities to phase in require-

ments for completion of all college preparatory curriculum

requirements before enrollment.

Undergraduate course offerings include liberal arts and pro-

fessional degree programs that provide students with breadth

and depth of preparation for their intended careers. All degrees

build on a broadly based general education program that

includes the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and the

social sciences. Undergraduate programs offer opportunities for

specialization in the arts and sciences and in preprofessional and

professional areas including business, education, and nursing.

Georgia College’s range of degree programs is the broadest

in the midstate, with 65 undergraduate, 35 graduate and 20 pre-

professional programs.

The university also provides graduate studies in several spe-

cialties of the arts and sciences and in business, education and

health sciences. Admission is based on criteria specific to each

program. These programs are designed to be responsive to the

needs of contemporary students.

Georgia College boasts of one of the top libraries in Middle

Academics

The outward quiet beauty of

Milledgeville belies the bustling nature of

this community of more than 20,000 cit-

izens. Wrapped in southern charm and

history, Milledgeville has much to offer.

Milledgeville, named for John

Milledge, a Revolutionary War veteran,

was founded in 1803 by the Georgia leg-

islature to be the permanent capital of

the state. It has the distinction of being

one of the few cities in the United States

that was founded and planned as a capi-

tal city. In November 1864, on his march

to the sea, Union General William T.

Sherman and his troops passed through

the city on their way to Savannah. After

consultation, Sherman and his generals

decided not to destroy the Capitol build-

ing and the Governor’s Mansion. In

1868, the capital of Georgia was moved

from Milledgeville to Atlanta.

Since that time Milledgeville has

grown to what it is today, a city located

in the heart of Georgia that enjoys its past with an eye on

the future.

The area has a diversified manufacturing base, producing

everything from aerospace products to heat pumps, carpet yarn

and worsted wool.

Milledgeville is

somewhat unique

when it comes to eco-

nomic development.

The state of Georgia

is the largest employ-

er in the area

employing more than

6,000 people, includ-

ing the faculty and

staff of Georgia College.

For recreation, Milledgeville is in the center of it all. Located

on the shores of Lake Sinclair, the area offers a variety of aquat-

ic recreation on the 15,330 acre lake which includes fishing,

water skiing and boating. Milledgeville also offers two 18-hole

championship golf courses, a softball complex, two tennis courts

and several city parks.

Atlanta is less than two hours away.

Atlanta has something for everyone

including concerts, professional

sports, shopping and sight seeing.

Atlanta features the Hawks of the

National Basketball Association, the

Falcons of the National Football

League, the Braves of Major League

Baseball and the Thrashers of the

National Hockey League.

Milledgeville is centrally located in

Georgia with easy access to I-20, I-16

and I-75. The county sits on U.S.

Highway 441, a major north-south

artery. The proposed Fall Line Freeway,

a major east-west developmental high-

way, will pass within five miles of down-

town Milledgeville. Seaports in

Brunswick and Savannah are less than

four hours away and rail service is pro-

vided by Norfolk Southern and CSX. Air

freight and commercial passenger serv-

ices are available 30 miles to the south-

west, in Macon, and 90 miles to the northwest, in Atlanta.

Milledgeville is more than Georgia’s antebellum capital. It’s

the home of the Bobcats.

Sports Medicine & ConditioningSPORTS MEDICINEComprehensive medical careis coordinated for all Bobcatstudent-athletes under thedirection of a team physicianand a staff of nationally certi-fied and state licensed athletictrainers. Undergraduate stu-dent interns from the athletictraining education programassist the professional staff intheir duties while gainingvaluable hands-on experiencein the allied healthcare field. With a physician referral, thestaff is also available to treatGeorgia College faculty, staff, and students for their outpa-tient rehabilitation.

The first goal of the program is to help prevent athleticinjuries from occurring. Recognizing that some injuriesand illnesses are inevitable, the professional staff worksunder the supervision of the team physician to diagnosethose conditions, to provide initial treatment and follow-up care including any rehabilitation, and to counsel stu-dents on available treatment options. By providing qual-ity care as early as possible, student-athletes are ablereturn to the field of play as soon as possible whiledecreasing their risk of reinjury.

Services in the athletic trainingroom include state of the artmodalities such as ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, and laser as well as other treat-ment methods to alleviate painand swelling, increase strengthand flexibility, and decreaserisk of re-injury in the athletestreated there. Treatment andrehabilitation take place in the1000 square foot athletic train-ing room at the CentennialCenter, as well as a smallersatellite facility at WestCampus. the starting second baseman. The versatileand speedy base-runner hit .216 with 16 runsscored and six stolen bases a year ago and hasnow played in three NCAA Tournaments in asmany years.

Chandler will factor in at all three outfieldspots, as she took over as the regular startingrightfielder for the final 11 games. The slaphitter hit .333, scoring five runs and driving inthree. Her speed causes problems for oppo-nents both at the plate and in the field, as sheis a very strong defensive outfielder.

Junior Kati Pickowitz has experience atboth corner outfield spots, starting 50 gamesover the last two years. She hit .153 a year agowith 13 runs and five RBI, and has worked onhitting from both sides of the plate in the fall.

A pair of junior transfers and a freshmandot the newcomers list in the outfield.Belourse Jean-Francis comes from highly-touted Santa Fe Community College, whereshe was a two-time All-American. “Strong asan ox” according to Chaffinch, Jean-Francis isa five-tool player, with solid defensive skills togo with her speed and ability to “hit the tar outof the ball”.

Lauren Potts joins the Bobcats after twoseasons at ABAC, one ending in a conferenceall-tournament team nod. Potts surprisedChaffinch with her live bat in the fall, as theskipper said she’s “going to have to get her inthe lineup somewhere” based off the power inPotts’ bat.

Freshman Melanie Goolsby has “surprisingspeed” for her 5-foot-8 height. She can hit forpower as well. “She hits like a middle-lineupplayer and runs like a top of the lineup play-er,” said Chaffinch. “She’s really dangerous.”

Over the past five years with head coachGinger Chaffinch at the helm, the GeorgiaCollege softball team has become one of thepremier programs in the southeast. TheBobcats have made four-straight trips to theNCAA Tournament, won the PBCTournament, won an NCAA region title andproduced six All-Americans as well as twoAcademic All-America trophies in the pastfive seasons. The Bobcats are coming off a 32-24 year taking second in the PBC, matchingthe program’s best finish.

What will they do for an encore? Integratenine newcomers to some game-tested veter-ans in an effort to come up with the right for-mula for success.

“As a coach, you ideally want a good mix offour-year players with junior college trans-fers,” said Chaffinch. “I think we have a reallygood balance this year.”PITCHERS“A lot of our success is going to come down topitching,” she said. “We got some pleasantsurprises from our new pitchers in the fall, and with some continued hard work there wewill start to see results.”

Sophomore Haley Burnett has seen themost ring-action in a Bobcat uniform amongthe team’s four pitchers. As a rookie, shethrew in 22 games with 12 starts, going 1-7with a 5.04 ERA. She showed flashes of bril-liance, getting her first win over WestAlabama in a five-inning gem, allowing oneearned run and fanning six. She also struckout 12 batters against Indianapolis in one ofher best starts.

Classmate Sabrina Chandler (1-2, 4.38ERA) will see her role shift more to the out-

field, utilizing the freshman’s speed on the base-paths and on defense, but could be called back tothe ring in a pinch.

The two newcomers, rookie Kristi Rodriguezand sophomore Caitlin Duvall will make an imme-diate impact on the rotation. While possessingvastly different demeanors, the two often come tothe same result, a bulldoggish desire to get battersout. Rodriguez picked up the Bobby Baily Awardfor most athletic in North Georgia while attendingKennesaw Mountain High, while Duvall spent aseason at Young Harris College, boasting a 2.94ERA over 88 innings.CATCHERSAll-PBC Second Team selection Anna Parker returnsbehind the dish, after playing in all 56 games a yearago. While she hit .217, she showed great pop withseven big home runs and 24 RBI. She’ll hit in themiddle of the lineup, and will hopefully “show moreconsistency to be more dangerous”.

Three more catchers are on the 2010 roster, ledby freshman Kali Carswell, a “very sound defen-sive catcher, improving daily on offense” accord-ing to Chaffinch. Joining her in the depth chartare junior Lisa Williams and freshman KelseaMartin but both are slotted for infield spots, andwill only appear behind the plate in a pinch.INFIELDSenior Kayla Smith carries a big stick, playingeither right-side spot. She used the 2009 NCAASoutheast Regional as her own showcase, blastingthree home runs in as many games en route to All-Tournament Team honors. She finished with sixround-trippers, hit .240 and drove in 25 whileslugging a solid .460.

When not pitching, Burnett (.192, 1 HR, 7 RBI)should also spend time at first base or designatedplayer, as the Hardaway High home run queen has“the potential to be a tremendous power hitter”.

Sophomore Jessica Solomon saw action in 27games a year ago at third base, and will return to playat both corners this season. As a rookie, she hit .172with a couple of doubles and her first collegiate homerun, and can “hit the ball a ton” says Chaffinch.

Junior second baseman Bailey Thompsonbrings nine games of experience as a Bobcat withher this season, and should see her role increase.A very smart runner, she may be a top choice inpinch-running opportunities as well.

A transfer from region champion DartonCollege, Williams will factor in at the middleinfield spots, and is a solid defender, hard worker, and good singles and doubles hitter. An All-Region and All-County pick at Dacula High,Martin is a tremendous fielding third basemanwho “moves smoothly to both her left and right”and is a “great contact hitter that is very smartabout the game”.

Junior shortstop Brandie Monroe comes toMilledgeville after being named a junior collegeAll-American at Andrew College. Monroe is verystrong defensively and continues to improve inher offensive game.OUTFIELDThe outfield should be one of the most highlycompetitive spots, at all three positions.Experienced returners and talented newcomerswill face off for the three roles.

Senior Allison Schwimer returns to the outfieldafter spending the majority of the 2009 season as

Peach Belt Conference

Now entering its 20th year of existence in 2009-10, thePeach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division IIconferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, thePeach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellencewhich continues to this day with 28 national championships and25 national finalist

Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s andwomen’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 champi-onship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009.

The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division IIconference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five ofthose 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt andbegin play in fall 1990.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing anational championship. The Columbus State golf team took thehonor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golfchampionships the Cougars own. One year later, the Landermen's tennis team began their record-breaking run of eightstraight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCAmen's golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06while AASU women's tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2008-09 season was among the conference’s mostmemorable. The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s and women’stennis teams both won their respective national championships– for the second year in a row; a feat only done once before incollege tennis. In addition, the Augusta State men’s basketballteam became the first conference program to make back-to-backtrips to the NCAA Elite Eight, Armstrong Atlantic became thefirst PBC volleyball team ever to advance to the Elite Eight andthe North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation andreached the World Series.

The seven charter members of the conference wereArmstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University,Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University,Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The namePeach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000.

Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNCPembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They werefollowed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, ClaytonState University on July 1, 1995 and the University of NorthFlorida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Floridadeparted for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC-Upstate did thesame in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North GeorgiaCollege & State University in 2005 and Georgia SouthwesternState University in 2006.

For 2009-10, the Peach Belt has grown once again with theaddition of the University of Montevallo and Flagler College, giv-ing the PBC 13 members, the most the league has ever had. Theaddition of the two schools returns the PBC to the state of Floridaand expands the league into Alabama for the first time.

David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in Mayof 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBCcommissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuingthe strong growth of the conference as its second era begins.

Dr. David Potter, president of North Georgia College & StateUniversity, returns as the president of the Peach Belt in 2009-10.

The conference currently holds championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’scross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s andwomen’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, soft-ball and men’s and women’s golf.

2006, Another Season To RememberPicked to finish fourth in the Peach

Belt Conference Preseason CoachesPoll, the 2006 Georgia College Bobcatssurprised everyone but themselves bypulling off one of the greatest seasonsin school history. Georgia College post-ed a school record for victories with a45-13 overall record, finished second inthe Peach Belt Conference with a 14-4league mark, won the NCAA SouthAtlantic Regional for the second time, advanced to the NCAA Division IISoftball National Championships forthe second time in school history, andwas ranked No. 6 in the final nationalpoll. Senior leadership, outstandingcontributions from newcomers, andincredible effort from a young pitchingstaff made 2006 one for the record books.

Georgia College went 36-9 during the regular season to finishas the runner-up in the Peach Belt Conference. The Bobcats defeat-ed every league team at least once for the second straight year.Georgia College’s Ginger Chaffinch was named the PBC Coachof the Year, while junior third baseman Keidra Baitey was hon-ored as the PBC Player of the Year. Baitey led the PBC during theregular season with a .432 batting average with 11 doubles, fourtriples, eight home runs, 38 RBI, 40 runs, and nine stolen bases. She was the first Bobcat player to earn the Player of the Year Awardand was joined on the All-Conference team by senior shortstopDiana Baruffa, senior first baseman Heather Jones, and fresh-man pitcher Mandy Chandler. Chandler, and sophomore LibbyKidd had each earned PBC Pitcher of the Week honors during theseason, and Kidd led the league in victories during the regular sea-son.

The Bobcats entered the 2006 PBC Tournament in Aiken,S.C., as the No. 2 seed and got off to a good start with a 5-0 overUSC Upstate thanks to a complete game shutout from Kidd. Thatfollowed with a 4-2 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State. GeorgiaCollege fell out of the winner’s bracket of the double eliminationtournament with a tough 2-1 loss in the semifinals to PBC regularseason champion Columbus State as the Lady Cougars scored thegame-winner in the bottom of the seventh.

Georgia Collegewas down, but not out,and pushed itself backinto the championshipgame with an 8-0 victoryover Lander. Jones andjunior Nikki Smithbelted home runs topower the offense, whileKidd tossed a gamethree-hit shutout.

The Bobcats wouldadvance to the champi-onship game of the tour-nament to face top-seed-ed Columbus State again.Needing to defeat theLady Cougars twice, the

Bobcats got off to a good start by winning the first game 7-1 toforce a second title game. Jones led the way with her 12th homerun of the season to break the school single season record.

Georgia College held an early 2-0 lead in the final game, butCSU took advantage of a Bobcat error to extend the bottom of thefourth inning, and the Lady Cougars would score three unearnedruns to take the lead. The Bobcats bounced right back to tie thegame in the fifth inning on Keidra Baitey’s RBI single, but CSU’sJenny Baaske clubbed a solo home run to center field in the bot-tom of the sixth for what would be the game-winning run in the 4-3 victory by the Lady Cougars.

Denied an automatic bid and a chance to host the NCAASouth Atlantic Regional, Georgia College would have to travel toColumbus, Ga., where the Bobcats would be one of four PBCteams in the eight-team tournament. It would be GeorgiaCollege’s second trip to the tournament, and second in the lastfour years after the 2003 team finished as the national runner up.The senior trio of Baruffa, Baker and Jones were determined tofinish their careers where it started as freshman: the CollegeWorld Series.

The Bobcats got offto a thrilling start in theregional, scoring threeruns in the bottom of thesixth inning to rally for a7-5 victory overArmstrong Atlantic inthe first round of thetournament.

Georgia College’ssecond round match-upagainst WingateUniversity providedeven more thrills. Rightfielder Brianna Hopethrew out Wingate’sHallie Pettigrew at theplate to end the gameand preserve a 4-3 victo-ry. Wingate led 3-1 untilthe Bobcats rallied with

three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead.Freshman Lindsey Swanson started the scoring with an RBIsingle, and sophomore Shelbie Lindsey followed with a two-run single to give the Bobcats their first lead of the day at 4-3.

Wingate’s first two batters reached in the seventh via a hitand a Bobcat error. After Chandler retired the next two batters,Wingate’s Mandi Chester singled to right field and Pettigrewtried to score the tying run from second base, but Hope threw aperfect strike from the outfield to the plate where Georgia Collegecatcher Lindsey applied the tag to end the game. The Bobcatsimmediately stormed the field to celebrate the win.

In a game that took two days to complete, Georgia Collegeadvanced to the championship game of tournament after rallyingfor a 5-4 nine inning victory over Lenoir-Rhyne Sunday. After thegame was halted in the fifth due to rain late Saturday night,Georgia College’s Jones broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninthwith an RBI single to bring home Deidra Baitey, and Baruffawould also score what would prove to be the game-winning runon the play following an overthrow from the outfield for a 5-3lead. Deidra Baitey went 3-for-5, while Jones finished 2-for-3with three RBI to lead the Bobcats at the plate.

The win propelled the Bobcats into the regional champi-onship game for the second time in school history with a berth tothe NCAA II Softball Championships on the line. Lenoir-Rhynewould come out of the loser’s bracket to face Georgia Collegeagain, and just like the first game, seven innings would not beenough to settle it. In fact it would take more than twice that long.

In a game which invokes every possible superlative,Chandler struck out a school record 23 batters as the Bobcatsout-lasted Lenoir-Rhyne 4-1 late Sunday night and into Mondaymorning in a seemingly never-ending 16-inning marathon to winthe NCAA II South Atlantic Regional Championship and advanceto the Softball National Championships. The game was a pitch-er’s duel between Chandler, who was named the tournamentMVP, and LRC’s Casey Hanes, who both went the distance in thecontest.

Hanes broke up Chandler’s no-hitter with a bloop single overthe middle infield with one out in the eighth inning, but the Bearswould not score. The Bobcats had a big scoring chance in the topof the 10th with runners on second and third with one out, butHanes struck out the next two batters to end the threat.

Lenoir-Rhyne loaded the bases with one out in the 14th onan infield hit, a walk, and a dropped fly ball, but Chandler wouldbattle back to fan the next two batters to end that threat.

The Bears loaded the bases again with no outs in the 15th ona pair of walks and a fielder’s choice. Chandler would bear downand retire the next three batters to extend the game again.

The Bobcats finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the16th. Baruffa and Jones came around to score the first two runsfollowing an error on a ground ball off the bat of Nikki Smith.Aundrea Baker later added a two-run triple for a 4-0 lead.

Lenoir Rhyne scratched a run across in the bottom of the 16thand had two runners on, but Chandler once again got out of thejam to end the game. Chandler allowed one run on seven hits withthe 23 K’s in 16 complete innings. Hanes allowed four runs, allunearned, on seven hits with 15 K’s in her 16 innings of work.Jones and Deidra Baitey would join Chandler on the All-Tournament Team.

Georgia College was now one of eight teams advancing to thenational championship tournament in Salem, Va. The Bobcats gotoff to a slow start with a 9-1 loss to #2 Emporia State, but GeorgiaCollege would battle back with a 7-1 win over LeMoyne. KeidraBaitey went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBI, andChandler was solid in the circle, allowing one run on four hits withnine strikeouts in a complete game victory. The Bobcats scoredearly and often with one run in the each of the first two inningsand two more in the third. Georgia College blew the game open fora 6-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-run double fromNikki Smith. Smith finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while DianaBaruffa also had a good day, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The Bobcat season would come to an end in its next game ina 3-1 loss to Cal State Bakersfield. Trailing 2-1, the Bobcats pickedup a run in fifth on a solo home run from sophomore Casey Allen, but the Roadrunners answered with a big insurance run in thebottom of the frame and would hold on for the victory KeidraBaitey would be named to the All-Tournament Team.

The accolades continued to pile up for the Bobcats as KiedraBaitey (.408, 9 HR, 44 RBI) earned Third Team LouisvilleSlugger/NFCA Division II All-America honors. 2003, National Championship Run! A record breaking season for the

Georgia College softball team pro-pelled the Bobcats to an appearancein the NCAA Division II NationalChampionship game. The Bobcatsmade the most of their first ever tripto the NCAA tournament by sweep-ing through the South AtlanticRegional in Jacksonville, Fla., andthen continued their winning ways atthe NCAA II Softball Championshipsin Salem, Oregon, by advancing tothe national championship gamebefore falling to UC Davis. GeorgiaCollege posted a 42-9 overall recordand was ranked No. 2 in the finalpoll. The Bobcats overcame severalmajor obstacles which saw threestarters miss some or all of the postseason. A dominant pitchingstaff, outstanding defense, and timely hitting all season made2003 a season to remember!

Georgia College opened the 2003 season by winning aschool record 26 consecutive games and earned its highest evernational ranking at No.2. Included in the streak were Peach BeltConference sweeps over Kennesaw State, Columbus State andAugusta State. The streak ended with a pair of 1-0 losses atArmstrong Atlantic. The Bobcats finished second in the PBCduring the regular season with a 12-4 league mark and were 32-4 overall.

Georgia College head coach Windy Thees was honored asthe PBC Coach of the Year. Senior pitcher Jennifer Joiner, junior centerfielder Joni Frei, senior third baseman KristinHughes, and junior first baseman Amy Davenport earnedAll-Conference honors.

The Bobcats got off to a great start at the PBC Tournament inAiken, S.C., after blanking Lander 5-0 as Joiner tossed a four-hitshutout. Following a tough 3-2 loss to Kennesaw State, theBobcats stayed alive after knocking off Augusta State 4-3. Hopesfor an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament were dashed in a 6-1 loss to PBC Regular-Season Champion North Florida, and theBobcats finished third at the PBC Tournament. Freshman short-stop Diana Baruffa was named to the all-tournament team.

Georgia College was down, but not out as it awaited wordabout an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Despite losing

their starting secondbaseman after the con-ference tournament, theBobcats were able toregroup and win twoout of three gamesscheduled between theconference and NCAAtournaments. TheBobcats were rewardedfor their outstandingseason and would playin the NCAA SouthAtlantic Regional host-ed by the University ofNorth Florida in

Jacksonville. The Bobcats

entered the NCAA regional as the No. 2 seed, and would seemany common opponents as four of the six teams in the tourna-ment were from the PBC. It didn’t matter who they played how-ever, as the Bobcats swept through the tournament withoutallowing a single run. Georgia College opened the tournamentwith a 2-0 victory over Wingate. Leading 1-0, senior MandiJones gave the Bobcats some insurance in the sixth inning witha sacrifice fly, scoring junior Davenport from third base. Thatwas all Joiner would need as she struck out the side in the sev-enth to complete a four-hit shutout. The win was not without aheavy price as starting senior catcher Rebecca Heinicka waslost for the tournament after suffering a broken nose off a foulball in her first at bat. Freshman Heather Jones, who hadnever caught in a collegiate game, filled in marvelously.

Game two was a match-up of the top two seeds as theBobcats took on host North Florida. Georgia College wouldstrike in its first at bat for the second straight day as Hughesbelted a double to right-center to score Frei.Jones, now a veteranbehind the plate, helpedkeep the Lady Ospreysoff the board after sur-viving a collision on aplay at the plate to endthe second inning fol-lowing a perfect throwfrom freshman leftfield-er Aundrea Baker.Jones also made noisewith her bat and led offthe fourth inning with asolo home run to centerfield. Davenport’s RBIsingle in the fifth gavethe team a 3-0 lead, andJoiner was once againsolid, scattering sevenhits in another completegame shutout.

With the win, the Bobcats advanced to the regional champi-onship game against Armstrong Atlantic; a team which haddefeated Georgia College twice during the regular season by

identical 1-0 scores. Joiner and AASU’s Delaney Warrian wereengaged in a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel which took 13innings to resolve. This time Georgia College would be on thepositive end of a 1-0 decision. Frei led off the bottom of the 13thwith a double down the left field line. Baker drilled a 3-2 pitchinto the right-center gap to bring Frei home for the game win-ning run, and the Bobcats stormed the field to celebrate theirfirst ever trip to the NCAA Division II Softball Championshipsin Salem, Ore.

Joiner was named the MVP of the tournament after going3-0 without allowing a run in 27 innings pitched while recording28 strikeouts. She was joined on the all-tournament team byBaker, Frei and Heather Jones.

After a cross-country flight to Oregon, the Bobcats did notfall victim to the many distractions in the program’s first evertrip to the national tournament, and they certainly weren’t just“happy to be there.” Heinicka, now sporting two black eyes fromher broken nose, was back in the lineup behind the plate, but theBobcats were once again a woman down as senior pitcher CathyChandler could not make the trip due to another once in a life-time event: her wedding.

The Bobcats opened the 2003 NCAA II SoftballChampionships with a 1-0 victory over LeMoyne. Davenport’sRBI single in the first inning scored Frei for the game’s onlyrun, and that was all Joiner would need in the circle. Joinerfanned nine batters in a complete game shutout and was oneout away from tossing a no-hitter before giving up a single inthe seventh inning.

Game two was also a nail-biter as Georgia College andShippensburg were unable to push a run across the platethrough five innings. Senior Mandi Jones ripped a base hit downthe left field line to score Hughes in the sixth inning. Jones alsomade a huge defensive play from right field in the bottom ofinning, throwing out a runner at second base. Joiner was onceagain solid, tossing a three-hit shutout while striking out twelvebatters, including five of the last six batters she faced in a com-plete game 1-0 victory.

Day three of the double elimination tournament sawGeorgia College bumped from the winner’s bracket in a 4-1 lossto California-Davis. The Aggies used a three-run sixth inning tobreak open a close game. Baruffa accounted for GeorgiaCollege’s only run with a RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

UC Davis would advance to the title game, while theBobcats had to square off against one of the top hitting teams inthe nation, North Dakota State, for a chance at a rematch in thenational championship. Scoreless until the third inning, fresh-man Aundrea Baker created one of the most exciting plays of thetournament after slapping a bloop single which slipped underthe glove of the Bison centerfielder. Baker stunned the crowdwith her jaw-dropping speed, circling the bases on the error andchasing home Joiner, who was on first base, to put the Bobcatsahead 2-0. The Bobcats played perfect defense, and Joiner flirt-ed with a no-hitter once again before giving up a base hit in theseventh inning. With the 2-0 victory, the Bobcats advanced tothe national championship game against UC-Davis.

Georgia College simply ran out of gas in the title gameagainst an outstanding UC Davis team as the Aggies claimed a 7-0 win for their first national championship in their final year asa NCAA II institution. Joiner, Frei and Baker were named to theAll-Tournament Team. Joiner started every game in the circle, striking out 44 batters in 30 innings pitched with three shutoutvictories. Baker led Georgia College at the plate after batting.429 with a double, 2 runs and a pair of stolen bases.

There were several other “firsts” for Georgia College at thetournament as seniors Hughes and Joiner were the first Bobcatsto earn All-American honors, and Coach Thees and assistantsKelly Zeilstra and Rebecca Schweitzer were honored as theNFCA South Atlantic Region Coach Staff of the Year.

The trip to the national championship was truly an unfor-gettable experience for all involved. In addition to the excite-ment of playing the games, the team made numerous field tripsto make the most of its experience to the west coast. This includ-ed trips to the beach, various waterfalls and parks and several“shopping adventures.”

The trip concluded with a police escort at the BaldwinCounty line and a warm greeting from Georgia College admin-istrators, fans and (then) Georgia College President Dr.Rosemary DePaolo.
