Welcome to Humboldt County

Redwoods grow from Big Sur to the Oregon border, but only on California’s Redwood Coast do these magnifi cent trees achieve their primeval glory. Here

are untouched groves that stagger the senses with their size, but are surprisingly easy to access. Humboldt County, home to the tallest and largest stands of old growth redwoods, offers many scenic drives and nature trails to experience the giants. Redwood National & State Parks and Humboldt Redwoods State Park, two prime examples, boast half the world’s old growth redwoods.

To many, a redwood grove is a natural cathedral; there’s a sense of peace and rever-ence as one passes between the lofty pillars of trees and along the aisles of ferns, moss, sorrel and trillium, while high above sunlight fi lters

through the canopy as if through stained glass.People come from all over the world to make

the redwood pilgrimage. They fi nd that the trees are only the beginning of a Northern California adventure. Founders GroveHUMBOLDT REDWOODS STATE PARK

Off the Avenue of the Giants on Dyerville Loop Rd., four miles north of the Weott visitors center. This easy half-mile trail, in the grove that fi rst inspired conservationists to save the redwoods, passes by the giant Founders Tree and the even larger Dyerville Giant, which was perhaps the tallest redwood in the world when it toppled with a mighty crash in 1991.

Ladybird Johnson GroveREDWOOD NATIONAL PARK

On Bald Hill Rd. just north of Orick. A sublime redwood experience, this easy two-mile loop ushers you past towering old growth redwoods, goose pens, nurse logs and fern-covered glades. President Johnson dedicated the grove when the park was created in 1968.

redwood national park

Close to HomeImpressive groves are within the city limits of two Humboldt County towns. Eureka’s Sequoia Park offers 80 acres of redwoods, a playground with a super-slide built into a redwood, and a charming zoo. Arcata’s Community Forest offers 600 acres of redwoods and ten miles of trails. Find more at redwoods.info.

Rockefeller ForestHUMBOLDT REDWOODS STATE PARK

Take Mattole Rd. west from Hwy 101 north of Weott. The largest single stand of old growth redwoods in the world, this 10,000-acre tract contains many of the tallest trees in the world. It so impressed John D. Rockefeller that in 1927 he donated $1 million to preserve it.

Big Tree WaysideREDWOOD NATIONAL & STATE PARKS

Just north of the visitor center along the Redwood (Newton Drury) Scenic Parkway. This short, all-access walk delivers on the promise of its name. Big Tree, with a 300-plus foot height and 21-foot diameter, has been called the most massive redwood. Many trails radiate from here, whether close to Corkscrew Tree or far to Fern Canyon.

Avenue of the GiantsThe best place to view redwoods from your car, the 31-mile avenue winds through a series of impressive old growth groves. It parallels Hwy 101 and offers a memorable alternate drive as you enter or leave Humboldt County. Flat with gentle curves, the road passes by small towns, campgrounds, and plenty of redwood and Eel River trails. From the south, enter at Phillipsville; from the north, Pepperwood.

Trinity River and Bigfoot Scenic BywaysFollow two scenic byways for spectacular mountain and river views. From Arcata go east on Hwy 299. The road gains altitude as it passes through farmlands and forests. In an hour it reaches Willow Creek, where one can visit the Bigfoot museum or cool off in the Trinity River in the summer. Turn north on Hwy 96, the Bigfoot Scenic Byway, toward the Hoopa Valley for more great spots to fi sh, paddle and swim.

Redwood (Newton Drury) Scenic ParkwayThis ten-mile road through Redwood National and State Parks north of Orick rivals the Avenue of the Giants for scenic splendor. To view exceptional old growth specimens, stop at the Big Tree and Corkscrew Tree waysides, or take a short detour on the unpaved Cal-Barrel Rd. Along the way, keep your eyes open for half-ton Roosevelt elk grazing in the meadows, including in front of the Prairie Creek Visitor Center. This scenic alternate to Hwy 101 begins six miles north of Orick or four miles south of Klamath.

Lost Coast LoopThis half- or full-day drive samples the fabled Lost Coast, the longest stretch of wilderness beaches in the continental United States. From Ferndale, take the Mattole Road, known as the Wildcat, to Capetown and Cape Mendocino to reach the shore. Impressive vistas, deserted beaches, and tidal pools await. Continue south to tiny Petrolia, site of the state’s fi rst oil wells, then retrace the route back to Ferndale. If you have more time, continue on Mattole Road as it winds through Honeydew and Humboldt Redwoods State Park to loop back to Hwy 101.

Hog Heaven on Hwy 36Many motorcyclists call this 140-mile road the best cycle ride in California. Besides great mountain, redwood and coast views, its engineering quirks create heavenly hairpins. The ride begins from Hwy 101 in Fortuna, winds east along the Van Duzen River and Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, ascends into the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and glides into Red Bluff.

FERNDALEThe Victorian Village Locally known as “Cream City,” Ferndale was founded by pioneer families looking to farm the fertile Eel River bottom lands. The rich pastures are ideal for dairy cows and successful farmers translated their prosperity into substantial homes known as “Butterfat Palaces.” As was the style at the time, these gaily-painted houses dripped with intricate gingerbread detail. The quiet neighborhoods and vintage Main Street have changed very little, and with its quaint bed and breakfast inns, unhurried pace and pastoral setting, Ferndale is an ideal refuge from the hectic world. Of particular note are the historic Ferndale Cemetery, wild Russ Park and nearby Centerville Beach. The Ferndale Museum has displays of local history, while the Ferndale Art and Cultural Building is an enclave of working artists and craftspeople, and includes the off-the-wall Kinetic Sculpture Museum. The Fern Cottage offers seasonal tours of a sprawling Victorian farmhouse.

AVENUE OF THE GIANTS &Humboldt Redwoods State ParkThis renowned 30-mile stretch of old Hwy 101 half an hour south of Eureka offers the most outstanding display of giant trees in the redwood belt, with easy access to trails, historic towns, a drive-thru tree and swimming, fi shing and camping spots on the Eel River. The avenue winds through the heart of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, which includes the Rockefeller Forest, the largest remaining single stand of old-growth redwoods, a 10,000-acre forest with many of the world’s tallest trees.

TRINIDADA Seaside RetreatGateway to the California National Coastal Monument, this quaint fi shing village is perched on the continent’s edge amid sweeping vistas. The Memorial Lighthouse provides a vantage point over Trinidad Bay and access to Indian Beach. Trinidad Head rises above the harbor and pier, offering hiking trails with views up and down the coast. Trinidad State Beach is accessible from the Trinidad Head parking lot and from the forested cliffs along Stagecoach Road. The Humboldt State University Marine Lab has tidepool touch tanks for the kids. Farther north, Patrick’s Point State Park offers camping, hiking and beaches sprinkled with semi-precious agates.

REDWOOD NATIONAL & STATE PARKSHome of the World’s Tallest TreesOne hour north of Eureka near the town of Orick, this unique group of four neighboring parks protects nearly half the remaining old growth redwoods. The park system includes the Ladybird Johnson Grove, the oddly shaped Corkscrew Tree, massive Big Tree, and current and previous tall tree champions. The parks boast miles of pristine beaches, hiking trails, scenic campgrounds, big Roosevelt elk herds, and Fern Canyon, a magical chasm, featured in the Jurassic Park sequel, with walls draped in luxuriant ferns, mosses and waterfalls. big
