2009 BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONS

RADFORD, Va. – Radford cruised to its first Big South Championship in school history with a 10-1 six-inning victory over Liberty in the if-necessary game on May 9, 2009 at the RU Softball Field. With the triumph, the Highlanders earned its first bid to the NCAA Softball Tournament where they went on to face eventual national semifinalist Georgia. Highlighted by tournament MVP Kristen Shifflett’s 4-for-4 outing, which included her school-record 13th long ball of the season, Sarah Himan and Michelle Beall also belted home runs and added three RBI each. Chelsea Kelley, the 2009 Big South Pitcher of the Year, bounced back from a game one setback to scatter five hits over six innings to record her 24th victory of the season, while striking out a pair of Flames. Kelley and Shifflett, Jenn Everhart and Leigh Godfrey were named to the all-tournament team. The Highlanders did not waste time, using small ball to take a 4-0 lead in the first. Radford bunted the ball four times, including two successful squeezes by Himan and Nichole Beall, to go up 2-0. Michelle Beall and Shannon Keefe knocked in the next two runs with back-to-back RBI singles. Home runs by Shifflett and Beall made it 7-0. After Liberty scored its first run of the game in the sixth, Himan closed out the game with a one-out two-run walk-off home run in the bottom half of the inning.

“This is four years of hard work and dedication that has finally paid off,” said senior Jenn Everhart. “This is what our team has dreamed of and its feels amazing!”

2010 SEASON OUTLOOKQ&A WITH MICKEY DEAN

Radford softball is coming off its first Big South Championship and NCAA regional appearance and is looking forward to improving on the most successful season in program history. The Highlanders, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Mickey Dean, know they will have a tough task ahead of them, but are ready for the challenges that will be presented to them throughout the 2010 season. The 2009 Big South and State Coach of the Year sat down for a few minutes to talk Radford Softball and discuss a variety of topics which in-clude the challenges presented to his team coming off their first conference championship.

What did last season and the championship mean for this program?

The first thing is by going out and playing the teams that we played, and getting to regionals, it showed our team that we can compete at the national level on a week in and week out basis. And it’s important that we carry that forward. They understand now the work, the dedication, the commitment, and the trust that it takes to get to that point.

What are the expectations for this 2010 squad?

It’s important that we’ve been there (regionals) now. I know some coaches may not like to put the pressure on, but I think it’s vital that you have to continue it. Now, our expectations are even higher than they were last year as well as our team and individual goals. But they need to be, and I think our team understands that. We’re going to do what we need to do on a daily basis, and that’s all we can control at this point.

How do you think winning a championship helps Returning players?

I think it helps, especially with our juniors and seniors because they’ve been there the last two or three years and just haven’t gotten over the hump.

We got over the hump. We did conditioning yesterday and we worked our butts off, and then we got to the end and we did just a little bit more, because it always takes a just a little bit more. It’s not just on the physical part, it’s on the mental part too. Once you get to that point, all the teams are pretty even. Now it comes down to the mental part, who’s going to be mentally strong, because physically you’re all pretty even.

Coming into this season what is the most impor-tant thing you can instill in your players?

We’re not defending anything. This team has won zero, has not won a thing. This team does not get credit for what last year’s team did, because it’s a whole new dynamic. This is a completely different team, completely different year, one does not build on the other. You can’t take credit for something you did last year, when it’s this year. Everybody’s zero-zero.

The team has the most upperclassmen returning since you’ve been here. Does that play a significant role?

I think so, because the upperclassman that are here, are the ones that have been through the entire regime since I’ve been here. We’ve tried to build a little each year and a little bit more just on the mental part of it and the knowledge of the game. Every year they say, “why didn’t you teach us this last year?” It’s a pro-cess, everything is a process, we as coaches grow. We get through things in a matter of day that two or three years ago took us weeks to get through. Everyone that comes in and is on the team understands our philosophy with hitting and its backed by the upperclassmen. Everyone understands what our nature is on the bases, and it’s backed by the upperclassmen. Before we were just trying to build that and there was no real support from upperclassmen until last year, because it was still new.

Page 7: 2010 Radford Softball Media Guide

What is the biggest difference you have seen in this team since taking over four years ago?

I think the biggest difference is understanding. I think the understanding of what it takes over the summer break, what it takes over Christmas break. All that stuff was new, and it takes awhile to build. I thought the teams the past three years did a good job of recognizing that, and trying to build on it, and because of their sacrifices that’s why this program is where it is today.

With Sarah Himan and Hope Creasy, what is the one thing you have noticed in their growth from freshmen to seniors?

Sarah has a better understanding of me. She knows what I’m doing dur-ing a game, and understands it, and therefore she doesn’t get flustered or upset. She’s the one I correspond with most during a game. In her first couple of years she didn’t quite understand what I was trying to do sometimes, and it would get to her. Now it just doesn’t get to her, and she’s also helped with taking that over to the rest of the team. There’s a purpose to this, lets figure out what this purpose is, and go forward. Sarah’s done a nice job of that.

Hope has done a tremendous job of understanding how important it is to just be on the field. She has played first base, third base, outfield, and understands the importance of every position on the field. I think that really carries over to the younger players. We have seven shortstops on the team. We don’t start seven shortstops.

We start one and six others at different positions. What Hope has done is taken that and helped players understand; it doesn’t matter what position you played in high school, the important thing is to get on the field, be able to contribute to be a part of it on the field. She has does a nice job with that.

the toughest message to get across to the team

The toughest thing to get across to players is how important every day is. It’s so easy to take a day off in January when you know you’re not playing till the end of February. At the end of the season you can go back and count how many days you didn’t come out as a player, and took off, and how it hurt you in the end. I think that’s important. The other thing is that in this game everybody puts their pants, and shirts, and socks, and cleats, and gloves on the same way, and when we step on the field everything is even in that fashion. We have to make sure that we are in the best condition, we have knowledge of the game, and when we run out on to that field, we know that we are going to win. It doesn’t matter who it is, it doesn’t matter what name is across the chest, it matters what name is in the heart. We just want to get that across to our players.

Radford Softball is....

Disciplined aggressiveness.

Since taking his spot in the coaches’ box in 2007, Mickey Dean has lifted Radford softball to suc-cesses never before seen by the program, or any Highlander team. Dean, whose champi-onship pedigree extends from high school to the professional ranks, led

the Highlanders to their first Big South championship in 2009 as well as the school’s first-ever NCAA tournament win in any sport. The program’s remarkable year-by-year improvement under Dean cul-minated with a title last season, but was clearly a model of consistency: since 2006, the Highlanders are just one of 10 Division I teams to post four consecutive 40-win seasons. Under the guidance of the winningest coach in program history, Rad-ford has won 131 games (three 40-plus win seasons) over the past three years. Radford’s showing in the Chapel Hill regional, along with its 41-15 (16-2, Big South) campaign in 2009 earned the Highlander coaching staff NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Under Dean’s tutelage, the Highlanders have garnered 19 all-confer-ence and six regional (four 2009 first-teamers) selections, recorded the program’s highest (44) and end of the season (49) RPI in 2008, earned recognition in the 2008 national polls and has been ranked regularly among the top teams in several NCAA statistical categories. Continuing the trend of record-breaking seasons in 2009, the High-landers improved on school marks set in 2008 in home runs (71), batting average (.315), slugging percentage (.535), on-base percentage (.369) and conference wins (16). They also set new records with 24 double plays and 16 road wins. Individually, marks that had been held since 1996 were broken as new records were set in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage and on base-percentage. The success, however, extended beyond the box scores. After hosting and winning the 2009 Big South tournament, Dean and the Highland-ers appeared in the tough Chapel Hill regional. Radford was edged by eventual national semifinalist Georgia, defeated Campbell and fell to the host and 15th-ranked Tar Heels. The 9-5 come-from-behind win over the Camels was the first NCAA team victory for a Radford University athletic program in school history. To go along with Radford’s accolades, Dean also guided the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro FastPitch League to a 2008 championship, the first in franchise history. After completing his fourth season as the head coach of the Bandits, he was promoted to the team’s general man-ager position in September of 2008. The championships by the Bandits and Highlanders added to Dean’s stellar accomplishments. He has now won a championship at the high school, junior college, NCAA, professional and Olympic levels. On the recruiting trail, Dean has reaped the benefits early on as his first two recruiting classes have made immediate impacts on the field. In 2008, Shannon Keefe was named the Big South and VaSID state Fresh-man of the Year and just a season later Leigh Godfrey garnered both those honors. Keefe was the first Highlander rookie to be recognized by

the Big South since 1995. Dean’s pitchers have been successful under his tutelage having been named the Big South Pitcher of the Year each season. In 2009, Chelsea Kelley followed in Ashley Taylor’s footsteps as the conference’s top pitcher as well as being one of the first four Highlanders to be named a first team all-region selection. Following a strong coaching debut in 2007, Radford softball under Dean completed one of its most successful campaigns in school history in 2008. The Highlanders posted a school-best 46-15 mark that included a record 16-game winning streak. Those were just two of several marks obtained that season. Along with the wins and winning streak, new records were set for winning percent-age (.754), road/neutral site wins (34), hit by pitches (26), winning streak (16 games) and road winning streak (eight games). As with 2007, several hitting records were set, only to be broken a season later. On a national scale, Radford received its first vote in a NCAA poll, ranking it 34th and 37th nationally. The Highlanders recorded the high-est RPI (44) in school history and finished the season 49th. They also garnered a Big South record seven first team all-conference selections and eight overall. Dean was hired on Sept. 7, 2006 as Radford University’s fifth head coach in school history. He joined Radford after two seasons as an as-sistant and associate head coach at Longwood University. In his first season with Radford, Dean guided the Highlanders to a then-school record 44-27 mark and their second straight appearance in

Page 9: 2010 Radford Softball Media Guide

the Big South Championship game. Under his guidance, RU athletes earned six all-conference awards and four all-state accolades. Ashley Taylor was named Big South Pitcher of the Year and earned Southeast region honors, while becoming the first Highlander to obtain all-confer-ence accolades as a pitcher and hitter. The Highlanders also broke several team and individual records in 2007. Dean’s pitchers struck out a school-record 492 batters, while the base runners swiped a program-best 128 bases. Along with those marks, several hitting records fell, only to be broken again in 2008. A three-time NPF Manager of the Year, Dean became the sole manager of the Bandits in 2007 and after the 2008 championship he was named general manager. Prior to that, he along with co-manager Eugene Lenti led the Bandits to regular season championships in 2005 and 2006, including a 30-12 finish in 2006. Along with the Highlanders and Bandits, Dean currently holds the position of pitching coach with the Venezuelan National Team. Dean, who has been on the staff of the Venezuelan National team since 2002, helped lead the squad to the Gold Medal at the Central American Olympic Games in his first season and a Bronze Medal at the 2006 Pan American Games in Guatemala. He was also on the coaching staff in 2003 when Venezuela played in the Olympic qualifying tournament. In 2008, Venezuela qualified for its first-ever Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Before coming to Radford, Dean became a member of Longwood’s coaching staff as an assistant in 2005 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2006. During his two seasons, he served as the pitching coach, recruiting coordinator and defense strategy coach. Prior to the Bandits, Dean spent two seasons (2002-2004) as an as-sistant coach at Indiana University, helping guide the Hoosiers to their first winning season since 1997, finishing 2004 with a 32-31 record. The 2004 pitching staff also ranks second all-time in strikeouts in a season at Indiana. Before joining the staff at Indiana, Dean was an assistant at the Uni-versity of Akron from 2001-2002, where the Zips won the Mid-Ameri-can Conference (East Division) Championship in 2002. While at Akron, he coached the 2002 MAC Pitcher of the Year. He was also an assistant coach for Lake City Community College (Fla.) (LCCC) in the spring of 2000, before being promoted to head coach in the fall of the same year. As head coach of LCCC, he led the team to a NJCAA National Championship with a 65-5 record, earning him NJCAA Tournament Coach of the Year.

Dean began coaching softball in 1996, taking over the head coaching position at Orange County High School in Orange, Va. He was at the helm of the Hornets from 1996-1999, winning two Virginia AA State Titles (1998-99) and reaching the state semifinals in 1997. During his stint at OCHS, Dean was named Group AA Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999 and co-coach of the year in 1997. He was also selected to coach in the 1999 and 2000 Virginia East-West All-Star Games. A 1987 graduate of Elon University, Dean holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration. During his playing days, he was a four-year mem-ber of the baseball team which participated in the NAIA College World Series in both 1985 and 1987. Dean and his wife Liz reside in Pulaski with their two children, Isaac and Caroline.

With a 9-5 win over Campbell, Dean guided the Highlanders to the first-ever NCAA Tournament team victory for a Radford Athletic program in school history.

ASSISTANT COACHSECOND SEASON AT RADFORD

KATY LAMPMAN

Katy Lampman, enter-ing her second season as assistant softball coach at Radford University, has made an immediate impact on the Highlander squad. Playing a key role in Radford’s 2009 Big South Championship and a NCAA Regional appear-

ance, Lampman was part of a staff that was named Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year. With on-field instruction being Lampman’s main focus, the Highland-er defense flourished in 2009. Radford turned a school record 24 double plays and posted a .966 fielding percentage, tops in the Big South and second best in school history. Also working with the Highlander bats, the Highlanders improved on several team and individual numbers from a season ago which included breaking school records in batting average (.315), home runs (71), slug-ging (.535) and on base (.369) percentage.

A 2003 graduate of Winthrop, Lampman joins Radford after spending the past two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater. While with the Lady Eagles, she worked closely with the hitters and catchers. Along with coaching, Lampman has been providing private lessons that keyed on pitching, catching and hitting, while working several camps at Winthrop, University of Georgia and in Canada over the past five years. In 2007, she founded the Superior Softball School in Con-cord, N.C. which offers individual instruction and clinics in all areas of softball. Lampman (formerly Katy Agee) was a three-year starting catcher for the Lady Eagles (2001-03). A 2002 Big South All-Tournament selection, Lampman helped Winthrop to a pair of Big South Championship game appearances in 2001 and 2002. A pre-med major, Lampman graduated from Winthrop with a degree in biology, earning NFCA All-Academic honors, while being a member of the Tri-Beta Honor Society. A native of Louisa, Va., Lampman resides in Dublin with her two daughters, Natalie and Corynn.

ASSISTANT COACHFIRST SEASON AT RADFORD

LOREN MESSICK

Loren Messick is in her first season as an assistant softball coach at Radford University. Messick will be involved in all phases of the Highlander program from practice organization to recruiting. “Loren will be a great addition to our staff,” said

Dean. “She brings a great deal of knowledge of the local and state wide talent.” Messick, a former Roanoke College standout, joins Radford after spending last season as an assistant coach at her alma mater. She made a successful transition from player to coach, serving as the Maroons’ infield instructor in 2009 and helping them to a 24-11 overall and 12-6 ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) record. “Loren’s hire is part of our continuing commitment to be in the best position to recruit Virginia talent,” commented Dean.

Messick enjoyed a successful four-year career in a Maroon uniform. The four-time first team ODAC shortstop left Roanoke ranked in the top ten in sacrifice hits (2nd/41), batting (5th/.383), assists (5th/233), hits (7th/180) and runs (7th/135). A mainstay in the starting lineup, Messick was a key factor in Roanoke winning a pair of ODAC championships (2005 & 2006) and earning NCAA regional bids both seasons, reaching the finals in 2006. The Maroons, who finished ranked 21st nationally in 2005 and 2006, posted an impressive 118-38 overall and 57-15 conference record during Messick’s four-year career. Messick was recently named ASA (Amateur Softball Association) Deputy JO Commissioner and has served as an assistant coach with a pair of Virginia summer-club teams; the 2009 U-23 Renegades and the 2007 U-16 Northern Neck Rage.

2009 SEASON HEADLINESHighlanders Wrap up Season at NCAA Regionals

Radford softball’s season came to an end, falling to North Carolina, 9-4, in the second elimination of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. Just prior to their matchup with the Tar Heels (47-12), the Highlanders (41-15) won their and the school’s first team NCAA tournament contest with a 9-5 victory over Campbell. “I could not be more proud of our team this season,” said Dean. “We had a tremendous year with a lot of firsts. Our first conference championship, first team NCAA victory for our athletic program and our first all-region first-team selections.” Sophomore Kristen Shifflett paced the Highlanders, hitting a pair of home runs and knocking in three. Her two long balls brought her school record total to 16. Freshman Leigh Godfrey recorded a double and finished the season with a 15-game hitting streak and a school-record .469 batting average. Her average was 49 points higher than record holder Melissa Pickel (.420) and she became only the second player to bat .400 in a season and the first since 1996.

Radford Rallies Past Campbell for NCAA Regional Win Radford scored six unanswered runs, courtesy of four home runs, two by Leigh Godfrey, to defeat Campbell, 9-5 to earn its first NCAA Tournament win. It also marked the first NCAA tournament victory for any Radford athletic team.

Radford Edged by Top Seeded Georgia in Regional Opener A pair of solo home runs by Georgia was the difference as Radford fell in its first NCAA appearance, 3-1, from Anderson Field on the campus of North Carolina. Junior Sarah Himan recorded a pair of hits and scored the Highlanders’ (40-14) lone run of the contest.

Radford REcoginzed Regionally On the heels of making its first NCAA Tournament appearance, the Radford soft-ball team had four Highlanders were named to the Mid-Atlantic Region first team as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Thursday. Earning Radford’s first-ever recognition on the squad were Chelsea Kelley, Sarah Himan, Nichole Beall and Leigh Godfrey. The coaching staff was also recognized as head coach Mickey Dean, along with assistant coach Katy Lampman and volunteer assistant Ashley Taylor were recognized by their peers as the Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year, announced Monday by the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association).

Radford REcoginzed By the Commonwealth Leigh Godfrey and Mickey Dean garnered top honors and a total of seven members Radford’s 2009 Big South Championship softball squad were named to the VaSID University Division All-State Softball Team as announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Godfrey was tabbed Rookie of the Year and skipper Mickey Dean was named Coach of the Year, the first state coaching nod in program history. Godfrey, along with catcher Sarah Himan, second baseman Jenn Everhart, short-stop Kristen Shifflett and pitcher Chelsea Kelley garnered first-team accolades with third baseman Nichole Beall and outfielder Shannon Keefe earning second-team nods. For the second straight year, Radford paced the way with seven selections.

Big South Champions! Radford dropped Liberty 10-1 in six innings to claim its first Big South Champi-onship on May 7 from RU Softball Field. Highlighted by tournament MVP Kristen Shifflett’s 4-for-4 outing, which included her school-record 13th long ball of the season, Sarah Himan and Michelle Beall also belted home runs and added three RBI each for the Highlanders. Chelsea Kelley, the 2009 Big South Pitcher of the Year, bounced back from a game one setback to scatter five hits over six innings to record her 24th victory of the season, while striking out a pair of Flames.

SHIFFLETT NAMED MVP Kristen Shifflett was honored as the 2009 Big South Tournament MVP, following her 4-for-4 performance in the deciding championship game. She batted .583 with a pair of doubles, home run, three RBI and four runs scored. She slugged 1.000, recorded a .571 on base percentage and was stellar on defense. The home run she hit in the championship game was her 13th, setting a new school record.

Highlanders Garner Big South Honors Sophomore Chelsea Kelley, freshman Leigh Godfrey and head coach Mickey Dean were named Big South Pitcher, Freshman and Coach of the Year respectively. Joining Kelley and Godfrey on the league’s first team were junior catcher Sarah Himan, sophomore shortstop Kristen Shifflett and freshman third baseman Nichole Beall. Senior second baseman Jenn Everhart and sophomore outfielder Shannon Keefe, garnered second team honors. Sophomore pitcher Kellie Snooks rounded out the accolades as she was selected the conference’s all-academic squad.

Regular Season Champs Radford claimed its first Big South regular season championship on April 25 with a 5-2 victory at Charleston Southern and clinched the outright title with a 2-1 tri-umph at home over Liberty on April 28. The Highlanders finished with a 16-2 league mark, a new Big South record for wins.

Dean Doesn’t Take Long to Become Highlanders’ Winningest Coach

In just his third season with Radford, Mickey Dean became the all-time wins leader in program history when he recorded his 128th in a 6-0 home victory over Gardner-Webb on May 7 during the first round of the Big South Tournament. He surpassed Amy Kvilhaug (2003-06), who won 127 contests prior to his arrival and finished 2009 with 133.

40x4 Among the Elite Radford has recorded 40-plus wins for the fourth consecutive season which has only been done by nine other division I schools since 2006. During that time, the Highlanders have amassed 171 victories.

Radford made its first NCAA Regional appearance on May 14, 2009 against eventual national semifinalist Georgia.

2009 SEASON HEADLINESGodfrey Just knows How to Get On Base

In her first collegiate season, freshman Leigh Godfrey found a knack for getting on base. The Big South Freshman of the Year reached base safely in 45 of the 48 contests she has played in, while recording a hit in all but six games (42 of 48). Earlier this season, Godfrey set a school record with an 18-game hitting streak and did not waste time starting a new one. She concluded 2009 recorded a hit in her last 15 contests and 33 of the last 34.

Undefeated on ESPNU Radford won its third consecutive contest on ESPNU, defeating Winthrop, 9-4 at home on April 19. The Highlanders are 3-0 on the network with their first two victories coming on the road at Winthrop in 2007 and Coastal Carolina in 2008. In front of a national audience, freshman Nichole Beall went 4-for-4 with four RBI and sophomore Chelsea Kelley turned in a gutsy pitching performance helping Radford surge past Winthrop and take sole possession of first place in the Big South from RU Softball Field. The Highlanders take a one-game lead in the standings after winning the rubber game of the three-game series. Beall belted her team and conference-tying ninth home run of the season, doubled and scored two runs, pacing the Highlanders’ 13-hit attack. Radford finished the three-game series with 40 hits.

Bombs Away; Records Fall

After six round trippers during the NCAA Regionals, Radford concluded the sea-son with school record 71. They broke the old mark on May 1 with its 59th at East Tennessee State. Individually, Kristen Shifflett launched her school-record 15th and 16th home runs in Radford’s regional contest against North Carolina. She broke a mark that has been held by Melissa Pickel since 1996 and was matched in 2007 by Ashley Taylor. Nine players have hit at least two home runs and six with six or more this season. On March 22 against Toledo, Radford hit a school record three home runs in the first inning and finished the game with four. The Highlanders hit at least one round tripper in 38 games this season and went deep more than once in 20 contests. Five times this season a Highlander tied the school record with two in a game. Shannon Keefe and Michelle Beall did the honor on March 11 and April 18 respec-tively. Keefe did it again on April 22 at Liberty, the first Highlander with a pair of two home run games in the same season. Leigh Godfrey and Shifflett recorded theirs during regionals. For the first time in 18 seasons, one of Radford’s home runs did not go over the fence. On May 1 at ETSU, Godfrey hit the first inside-the-park round tripper in school history.

RADFORD SOFTBALL HISTORY

Ashley Carlson, a four-year starter in the outfield for Radford, became the first Highlander softball player to compete profes-sionally when she landed a roster spot on May 25, 2008 with the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPF). Carlson, a two-year member of the Bandits, played a key role off the bench as Chicago won its first NPF Championship in 2008. The Bandits made their magical run from worst to first, winning their final 15 games, culminat-ing with a 6-4 victory over the Washington

Glory in the championship game to win the Cowles Cup Trophy on Aug. 24. In her first professional start on June 9, Carlson helped the Bandits in a 14-1 victory over the Akron Racers with three singles and a sacrifice bunt. She also scored a pair of runs and had an RBI. She finished her rookie season batting .286 (4-14) with 12 runs scored and an RBI. She tied for third on the team with eight stolen bases. Carlson, a two-time All-Big South performer, was a key factor in the success of Radford softball over the past four years. The Highlanders won 169 games during her time roaming the outfield. Carlson’s speed and quick hands contributed to her breaking both the career hits and steals records at Radford, while landing in the top five in the Big South in both those categories. The 2008 graduate played in 257 games, making 254 starts. She bat-ted .313 with 255 hits, eight doubles, eight triples, 30 RBI and 139 runs scored. She also stole 98 career bases, leading the Big South in that category her final three seasons.

ESPNU A WINNING TRADITION For the past three seasons, Radford softball has enjoyed national tele-vision exposure on ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, which included the first nationally televised game from RU Softball Field on April 19, 2009 against Winthrop. The Highlanders made the most of that game, a 9-4 victory, and the previous two with wins at Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. The contest at Winthrop on May 6, 2007 was the first-ever nationally televised softball game for the Big South Conference which saw the Highlanders clobber 19 hits and defeat the Eagles, 9-2. Other improvements include a new outfield windscreen, along with lowering the fences to four feet in foul territory. In the summer and fall of 2007, new grass sod was laid out in foul territory. With that, a new irrigation system was installed to cover the expanded

area of grass. Renovations on the field started prior to the 2004 season when covered dugouts that include a heating system were built. Upgrades prior to the 2006 season included a working press box and an improvement in the fan seating areas, moving the primary grandstand area

directly behind home plate. The newest addition to the list of amenities for the Highlander softball team is an indoor batting and pitching facility that allows Radford to practice

year-round.The facility includes six dedicated batting cages, with the necessary equipment and amenities for either live pitching or machine pitching. Located

Penelope Ward Kyle became Radford University’s sixth, and first female, president when she took office on June 1, 2005. She came to RU with more than 30 years of experience in state government, the corporate and legal worlds, and higher educa-tion.

Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle immediately focused on leading the university’s initiative to become one of the top 50 masters universities in the nation. The Radford Uni-versity strategic plan “7-17”, completed in 2007 at her direction, identifies four strategic directives -- the investment in people, programs, global and local society and the future of Radford University.

Under President Kyle’s leadership, the university also added its first doctoral program with an emphasis in rural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college stu-dent enrollment by offering additional doctoral and masters level programs. She hired the university’s first provost and created two new vice presidential areas of responsibility, Information Technology and University Relations. The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovation within the governing body.

A native of southwest Virginia, President Kyle is a prod-uct of the Galax public schools system. She graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies in English at Southern Methodist Univer-sity in Dallas, Texas. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and later earned her MBA from the College of William and Mary.

President Kyle served as Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery for 11 years, under three successive governors. First ap-pointed by Governor George Allen in 1994, she was reappointed by Governor James Gilmore, and then reappointed once again by Governor Mark Warner. Previously, Ms. Kyle was employed by CSX Corporation, an international transportation company, where she became the company’s first female officer. Before joining CSX Corporation, she was an attorney with McGuire, Woods, LLP in Richmond. She also taught English for six years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia.

President Kyle serves in leadership positions on numerous educational, civic, cultural, professional, financial and volun-teer organizations. She served on the Board of Visitors at James Madison University from 1984 until 1992 and on the JMU Foundation Board 1992 until 1994. She also served on the Vir-ginia Commonwealth University Foundation Board from 1994 until 2000 and on the Board of Governors of Saint Christopher’s School from 1999 until 2005. President Kyle is currently a mem-ber of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Board of Directors of PRA, Inc., a publicly traded company.

Ms. Kyle is married to Charles L. Menges, an attorney and partner with McGuire, Woods, LLC. They are the parents of a son, Kyle Ward Menges, and two daughters, Penelope Whitley Menges, and Patricia Lee Menges.

Since being introduced as radford university’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2007, radford native robert Lineburg has helped usher in a new era of Highland-er athletics, marked by unprecedented on-and off-field improvements and successes.

“robert Lineburg brings a unique col-lection of skills and experiences that make him a great fit for our program,” radford President Penelope W. Kyle said. “He is a former coach, he has worked in the corpo-rate world. His ties to the City of radford

will help build community support for Highlander athletics.”

in his short time with the depart-ment, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic

planning. His most visible influence to date has been on the Dedmon Cen-

ter, where Lineburg has been involved with major renovations to the centerpiece of radford athletics for more than 25 years. Beginning in the spring of 2008, the facility underwent transformations to the arena, including a new steel-supported roof, a new basketball floor, renovated athletic offices, a new-look natatorium, and improved athletic locker, training, and medical facilities.

Lineburg has also overseen the hires of four new head coaches, as well as five new athletic administrators. His hires include women’s basketball head coach Taj Njongba, head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, women’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler, and the promotion of track and field interim director Brent Chumbley to head coaches’ status. Among the administrators added in Lineburg’s tenure are executive associate A.D. randy Butt, head athletic trainer David Jager, assistant A.D. for communications Joey Beeler, director of student-athlete support services/senior women’s adminstrator Stephanie Ballein, and associate A.D. for external operations Greg Herring.

As a result of the changes, radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09: women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and softball claimed Big South conference crowns and advanced to NCAA Tournament play. Women’s soc-cer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament title to advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998, men’s tennis made its third-straight appearance, and softball appeared for the first time and won radford’s first-ever NCAA tournament game in any sport.

He and his staff have also been responsible for creat-ing a five-year strategic plan for the radford athletic department and building an athletics facilities master plan. Addi-tional achievements include ushering in a new athletics internet site (radfordAthletics.com), and helping implement a new ticket system (Ticket return). Lineburg and his staff have also hosted top-level competition, with three Big South championships taking place on

the radford campus in 2008-09 (men’s basketball, track & field and softball).

in addition to making an impact on radford athletics, Lineburg is also involved in a number of different organizations and commit-tees. He is the chairman of the Big South Conference Subcommittee on Basketball improvement, a member of the Big South ad-hoc Com-mittee on Basketball issues, and a member of the selection committee to select radford university’s Vice President for Advancement.

Prior to becoming radford’s third Director of Athletics, Line-burg’s corporate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton real Estate Partners in Dallas, Texas.

Along with his business experience, Lineburg spent 15 seasons as a college basketball coach, including time as Southern Methodist’s (Dallas, Texas) interim head coach. Prior to serving as the Mustangs interim head coach, Lineburg spent eight years as an assistant coach at SMu. Following his interim tenure, he served two more seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Methodist.

Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison university and Emory & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team. His coaching experience also took him through the Big South, as he spent time on the sideline at uNC Greensboro.

A 1991 graduate of roanoke College, Lineburg started his col-legiate basketball career as a radford Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman before transferring to nearby roanoke College to play his final two years.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in political science with a minor in history. in 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in education from Virginia Tech, where he was also a graduate assistant on the men’s basket-ball staff.

“in addition to being a good candidate, robert is a radford native, something that will serve him well in his new role,” Kyle said at the time of his hire. “He has great family ties in the area and we’re ex-cited he’s decided to come home to work with us.”

Lineburg is the son of re-tired radford High School foot-ball coach and athletic director Norman Lineburg and the brother of Dr. Mark Lineburg, the Assistant Superintendent of

Amherst Country Schools, Paul Lineburg, the Assistant Principal at Cave Spring H.S. and Wayne Lineburg, who is in his third season as the wide receivers coach at the university of Virginia.

He is married to the former Mary Parish, also a native of radford.

A component that is vital to the Radford athletic program is the strength and conditioning program directed by strength and conditioning coach Max Appleby.

Radford University has long been recognized as one of the leaders among Mid-Atlantic schools in its conditioning and strength training. It has been an in-strumental part in the success of Radford University sports through the years. Under the direction of Appleby and as-sistant coach Kim Faulkner, the program is designed to help each student-athlete reach his or her full potential in their respective sport. Each Radford Uni-versity student-athlete has strength and conditioning programs unique to their goals as a player. This program, devel-oped by Appleby, helps prepare Radford student-athletes for the long and rigor-ous in-season schedule.

The Strength and Conditioning staff at Radford University is committed to excellence in competition and in life.

The department of sports medicine at RU is deeply concerned with both the short-term and long-term effects of intercollegiate competition on the physical and mental well being of the student-athlete.

The sports medicine department is committed to providing quality health care to all varsity student-athletes, which begins with injury prevention. It is a priority to work with coaches, physicians, and the rest of the medical community to ensure that student-athletes are physically and mentally prepared for practice and competition.

Additionally, the sports medicine staff is responsible for the treatment and rehabilitation of all athletically related injuries. It is the staff’s goal to return the athlete to a level equal or above that of their pre-injury status; no athlete will return to play until his or her highest post-injury level of function has been achieved.

Lastly, the concern from the physical well being of the student-athlete includes the opposition to the use of all il-legal and NCAA-banned chemical substances by student-athletes. It is the responsibility of the sports medicine staff to provide athletes with information on the ill effects of drug use and to provide deterrents through periodic, ran-dom drug testing by the institution and the NCAA.

The mission of the Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) office for Radford University Athletics is to pro-mote, assist, and provide counsel to all student-athletes. Its primary, constant goal is to develop graduates and outstanding citizens who have contributed in the areas of athletic competition during their tenures of education.

Located in the Dedmon Center, the newly established Learning Enhancement Center (LEC) is equipped with computers, tutorial rooms, and a study lounge.

The Learning Enhancement Center provides direc-tion for student-athletes via academic counseling in conjunction with advisors from the respective colleges at Radford University. Academic support services such as tutoring and supervised study hall are provided, as well as career planning, monitoring of eligibility status, and a host of other guidance and advisory services.
