NEWBERRY COLLEGE WOMEN’S GOLF 2

2010 POSTSEASON MEDIA GUIDE

SEASON REvIEWWhen describing the 2009-10 campaign of the Newberry College women’s golf program, the phrase “best season of all-time” would be an apt fit, but how long would that claim last? This year’s edition of the scarlet and gray women’s golf lineup featured four fabulous freshman and a spectacular sophomore, all underclassmen, en route to the most successful season in Newberry history. Records were smashed, tournaments won, honors be-stowed, and goals achieved, but new expectations have been set with the scarlet and gray’s berth to the NCAA Division II South Regional in Salisbury, N.C. on May 2-4.

The 2009-10 season schedule featured four fall tournaments and five spring competitions. Newberry’s first tournament of the year was played on Sep-tember 14-15 in Baden, N.C. at the Lady Falcon/McNairy Invitational hosted by Pfeiffer University. The scarlet and gray snagged a fourth place finish at the par-72, 5,922-yard Old North State Club in a field of 14.

Despite completing play 10 strokes behind the tournament champion Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College, Newberry and head coach Lauren Ressler grabbed three individual top-20 placements. 2009 South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year Maria Besio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) would begin a strong sophomore effort, tying for fourth place with a 36-hole score of 152 (80-72; +8).

The freshman duo of Josefine Mensner (Lorenskog, Norway) and Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) each garnered a top-20 placement with Mensner tying for 12th and Castro tying for 18th.

After a solid, but not spectacular first tournament, Newberry began to build momentum in the season’s second tournament, the Queens Invitational held at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla on September 21-22. Newberry, ranked No. 22 in the nation according to the Golf World/NGCA Division II Coaches’ Poll at the time, earned a second place finish just narrowly falling to Ashland University. The scarlet and gray completed play one stroke behind the Ohio-based Division II program in a field of 15.

Once again, Maria Besio was Newberry’s top individual, tying for second place with a two round stroke total of 150 (75-75; +6). Castro finished two strokes behind Besio to snag fourth place and her first top-5 collegiate placement.

Growing stronger, the scarlet and gray would explode at the Lenoir-Rhyne/Myrtle Beach Invitational in early October. Newberry owned the par-72, 5,802-yard Meadowlands Golf Course, setting school records for an 18- and 36-hole low. Tallying 15 birdies and 108 pars as a team, Newberry took a two stroke lead into the second round only to expand its lead by 11 strokes with the first sub-300 18 holes in school history. The scarlet and gray shot a 299 and coupled with a first round 312 for a tournament stroke total of 611, Newberry bested the previous school record for an 36-hole low by 16 strokes.

With a dazzling scorecard of 149 (77-72; +5), Besio edged out Kelsey Babos of Catawba College for her first individual tournament championship of the season and second of her career. Besio paced the field with six birdies. Three other Newberry individuals placed in the top-15 for the scarlet and gray with Castro tying for third, freshman Lisa Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany) tying for ninth, and Mensner tying for 13th.

In six more tournaments during the 2009-10 campaign, Newberry would grab five team championships. The scarlet and gray topped the leaderboard for a second consecutive competition at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational on October 12-13. Edging Belmont Abbey College by two strokes, Newberry shot a 617 (306-311; +41) and Josefine Mensner picked up her first collegiate victory with a 36-hole score of 149 (73-76; +5). Castro tied for third and Besio took seventh in the win.

Mensner’s success would eventually lead to her selection as the 2010 SAC Freshman of the Year marking the second consecutive year a Newberry golfer has won the award.

With the Patsy Rendleman Invitational Newberry’s last fall tournament, the scarlet and gray would come out of the game just a little bit rusty to start the spring at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the Cougar Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C. In a field of 16, Newberry placed seventh which would be the lowest team result of the season.

Bouncing back just eight days later, Newberry began a string of for consecutive tournament championships in the spring beginning with the Newberry College Invitational in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Hosting the event at the Moss Creek Golf Course, the scarlet and gray shot a two round combined stroke total of 661 (330-331; +69) and topped a field of 16. All five Newberry individuals finished in the top-15, led by Lisa Brand garnering a place-ment of second with a 161 (80-81; +13). Besio was selected to the all-tournament team with a fourth place finish after shooting a 164 (83-81; +16).

The scarlet and gray rolled into the Dana Rader Intercollegiate on March 8-9, cruising through a 14-team tournament shooting a 624 (311-313; +48), the third best 36-hole low in school history at the time. Newberry completed play with a 16-stroke advantage Newberry’s individuals all placed in the top-15 for the second consecutive tournament. Besio grabbed fourth while Mensner took fifth and Brandl tied for sixth.

Newberry’s most impressive feat of the 2009-10 season might have come at the Ralph Hargett Intercollegiate on March 29-30. After 20 days of rest, Newbery presented its most dominant performance with a fifth tournament victory of the year and third in a row. The scarlet and gray racked up 12 bird-ies and 87 pars en route to a 17-stroke final cushion over second place UNC Pembroke.

The team dominance by the scarlet and gray was made possible by three fantastic individual efforts. Newberry’s Maria Besio, Lisa Brandl, and Jo-sephine Mensner finished in first, second, and third individually. Besio and Brandl each shot a 155, but Maria won the scorecard playoff over Lisa. Men-sner was just two strokes back from her teammates with a 157.

Going into the 2010 Food Lion SAC Championship, Newberry, now ranked No. 11 in the country, was the heavy favorite. With four consecutive first place finishes and six on the season, the scarlet and gray had smashed school records. Just prior to the SAC Championship’s first round, Newberry was heavily decorated in the conference’s postseason awards. Head coach Lauren Ressler was named SAC Coach of the Year, becoming the second Newberry coach to win the award. Mensner grabbed SAC Freshman of the Year honors and four women’s golfers were named to the All-SAC teams. Besio and Mensner landed on the first team while Castro and Brandl earned second team selections.

As Newberry prepared for the 54-hole gauntlet that is the SAC Championship, the real hardware lay ahead of the scarlet and gray. Considered a two horse race between Carson-Newman and Newberry, the two teams didn’t disappoint as the scarlet and gray held a slim two stroke advantage after the first day. Originally scheduled for 36-holes at the Etowah Valley Country Club in Hendersonville, N.C., the first day was cut short by nine holes due to early morning frost.

The scarlet and gray would fall behind by one stroke heading into the final 18 holes after completing the final nine holes from the second round on day two. Newberry’s score improved every round, but Carson-Newman faltered in the third eventually leading to an easy 18-stroke victory for head coach Lauren Ressler and the Newberry side.

Newberry set a new conference and school record with a three round stroke total of 923 (314-305-304). Maria Besio tied a SAC record and broke the Newberry record for a 54-hole low individual score with a 225 (74-76-75) and the native of Argentina sat atop the leaderboard at the end of the day. Besio churned out five birdies and an eagle in the victory.

Josefine Mensner grabbed second place with a 228 and Barbara Castro tied for fifth. Brandl finished play in 11th place and freshman Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) tied for 18th.

On an unprecedented winning streak of four tournaments and six of the last seven, the Newberry women’s golf program is playing its best golf ever. With four freshmen and one sophomore, the present and the future look bright as the scarlet and gray enter the NCAA Super Regional.

HEAD COACH

Lauren Ressler is in her third as head women’s golf coach at Newberry Col-lege.

The 2009-10 season, Ressler’s third with Newberry, could be considered the best in the history of the scarlet and gray women’s golf program. Claiming the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship in April, Newberry completed an unprecedented run of four consecutive tournament victories and six overall tournament wins in nine competitions in 2009-10. The scarlet and gray qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division II Super Regional as a team and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the Golf World/NGCA Division II Coaches’

Poll througout the season. Newberry individuals won four tournaments including three from 1st Team All-SAC selection Maria Besio. A sophomore, Besio was crowned the champion of the SAC Tournament while shooting a conference-tying 225 over 54 holes. The score also broke Newberry’s individual school record for a 54-hole low. Before the SAC Cham-pionships, Ressler was named the 2009-10 SAC Coach of the Year. Newberry also featured the SAC Freshman of the Year for a second consecutive season in Josefine Mensner. The scarlet and gray placed two members on both the 1st Team and 2nd Team All-SAC teams. Newberry broke team records for an 18-, 36-, and 54-hole during 2009-10, nine top-10 placements, and eight top-5 placements. Individually, the scarlet and gray had 32 top-20 placements, 22 top-10 placements, 17 top-5 placements, and 16 all-tournament team selections. The scarlet and gray’s overall win/loss record of 107-10 and consistently ranked in the top-10 in the Golfstat Inc. head-to-head statistics.

In her second season, Ressler’s team earned six top-5 finishes while competing in 10 events during the fall and spring. Newberry successfully hosted The Newberry College invitational in Hilton Head Island, S.C. at the Moss Creek Golf Club on February 16-17. Individually, freshman Maria Besio qualified for the NCAA Regional competition while also picking up honors in the South Atlantic Conference. Besio was named the SAC Women’s Golfer and Freshman of the Year.

During her first year, Newberry women’s golf had seven top five placements and nine top ten finishes. Individually, Franziska Blum qualified for NCAA Regional competition.

Prior to joining the Newberry College staff, Ressler worked for the Houston Golf Association, one of the largest associations of its kind in the country. She reported to the Association’s CEO, coordinating instruction at The First Tee of Houston/Red-stone in Humble, Texas. There she was responsible for the delivery of The First Tee Life Skills Curriculum to participants ages 7-18 as well as assisting the Houston Golf Association with the 2007 Shell Houston Open.

Ressler graduated in May 2006 from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. At Yale, Ressler was a member of the Ivy League Championship team in 2003 and 2006. Individually, she captured medalist honors at the 2003 Harvard Invitational at the Dunes Course at Country Club of New Seabury in Massachusetts. Ressler served as cap-tain in 2004 and 2005 and was awarded the Widdy Neale Most Valuable Player award three of her four seasons. While at Yale, she studied Political Science and American Government and was President of the Epsilon Tau chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta.

Ressler served as an assistant to instructors in 2003 and 2004 at the Jeff Coston Golf Academy. In addition to Jeff Cos-ton, Ressler studied under Golf Magazine’s Top 100 teachers Mike Bender and Mike Adams.

A native of Bellingham, Wash., Ressler played in three USGA Junior Girls’ Championships and was a member of the Bellingham High School Girls Golf Team when they captured the first of their six consecutive 3A State Championships in 2002. Her sister, Blair, is a rising senior on the University of Oregon women’s golf team.
