Building a TraditionHead Coach Mark Cody has created a new tradition of excellence at American University, building champions both on the mat and in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight student-athletes have earned All-America status since 2005 and in 2007, Josh Glenn, ‘08, captured the program’s fi rst national championship. Cody’s leadership has also extended beyond the wrestling room as 11 student-athletes have earned Academic All-America status since 2005 and the team has been named the NWCA Champions of the Classroom each of the last two years.

Setting a New StandardAmerican has placed as high as 17th at the NCAA Championships, doing so in both 2006 and 2007, and this year will be looking for a new program-best fi nish. The Eagles will send two returning All-Americans to the tournament in Mike Cannon and Kyle Borshoff for the fi rst time ever, with Cannon earning the honor each of the last two years and Borshoff for the fi rst time in 2009. American’s lineup will also include two-time NCAA Division II National Runner-Up Steve Fittery as well as fi rst time qualifi ers Jordan Lipp and Daniel Mitchell.

Starting FiveAmerican will be sending a program record fi ve student-athletes to the 2010 NCAA Championships, topping the previous record of four set in 2006 and 2008. Seniors Kyle Borshoff and Mike Cannon will be making their third and fourth appearance at the tournament, respectively, while senior Jordan Lipp, junior Steve Fittery and freshman Daniel Mitchell will each be making their fi rst appearance.

Moving on UpSenior Mike Cannon will be looking to become an All-American for a third straight year and by doing so will become just the 13th student-athlete under the current weight class structure to do so in three different weight classes. Cannon fi rst became an All-American in 2008 when he placed sixth at 165 lbs. and last year he took the honor with an eighth-place fi nish at 174 lbs. This year, Cannon will enter the tournament as the #4 seed at 184 lbs.

Joining Elite CompanyBy earning All-America status at this year’s NCAA Championships, senior Mike Cannon will become just the second student-athlete behind Josh Glenn, ‘08, to earn the distinction three times. Cannon and Glenn are currently the only multiple time All-Americans in program history but could be joined this year by senior Kyle Borshoff, a 2009 All-American at 149 lbs. Cannon and Glenn are also the only student-athletes in program history to qualify for four NCAA Championships.

Going Out on TopSenior Mike Cannon won the 184 lbs. title at the 106th EIWA Championships to fi nish his EIWA career on a high note. Cannon also claimed the 174 lbs. title at the conference tournament last year and was a three-time fi nalist. He never placed lower than third at the tournament and concluded his EIWA Championships career with a 14-2 record.

American University WrestlingAmerican University WrestlingOwning the PodiumThe Eagles placed a team record seven student-athletes on the podium at the 106th EIWA Championships en route to a program best fi fth-place fi nish. American had four top-four fi nishers, including 184 lbs. champion Mike Cannon and 141 lbs. runner-up Jordan Lipp. Junior Steve Fittery placed third at 157 lbs. while freshman Daniel Mitchell took fourth at 197 lbs. Other placewinners included 149-pounder Kyle Borshoff (5th), 125-pounder Jasen Borshoff (6th) and 133-pounder Thomas Williams (7th). American previously had placed six student-athletes on the podium at last year’s EIWA Championships.

Champion of ChampionsJunior Steve Fittery won the 157 lbs. title at

the 2009 Midlands Championships and was named the Champion of Champions for his performance. Fittery picked up three major decisions, one tech-fall and one fall over the two-day tournament while becoming just the third student-athlete in American history to win a Midlands title. The junior was joined on the podium by seniors Mike Cannon and Kyle Borshoff who placed second and seventh, respectively, at 184 lbs. and 149 lbs.

Climbing the ChartsSeniors Mike Cannon and Kyle Borshoff rank second and fi fth, respectively, on American’s career wins list. Cannon is one of only four wrestlers in school history to reach 100 wins and his career record of 117-18 is second only to Marc Hoffer, ‘02, who posted a 125-34 career mark. Borshoff holds a 98-36 career record and could become the fi fth American wrestler to eclipse 100 wins.

One of a KindSenior Kyle Borshoff was selected to compete in the 2009 NWCA All-Star Classic this past November, becoming the fi rst student-athlete in American history to be chosen for the prestigious event. Borshoff defeated three-time All-American Lance Palmer from Ohio State in the exhibition bout, 3-2, with an escape and takedown in the third period.

StreakingJunior Steve Fittery posted 22 consecutive wins between November 15 and March 6 with 20 of those victories coming with bonus points. Fittery’s streak included four falls, six tech-falls, nine major decisions and one forfeit. Senior Mike Cannon is currently riding a 14-match winning streak with 11 bonus point victories and began the year by winning each of his fi rst 11 bouts. Fellow senior Kyle Borshoff earned 12 straight wins from December 30 to February 20.

EIWA Wrestler of the WeekJunior Steve Fittery was named the EIWA Wrestler of the Week on January 4 after being crowned Champion of Champions at the 2009 Midlands Championships. Fittery also received the weekly award from the conference on November 23 after being named the Outstanding Wrestler at the 2009 Keystone Classic.

Head Coach Mark Cody is the man behind the American University Wrestling team’s rise to national prominence. In just seven years of coaching, Cody has rebuilt a program that was on the brink of elimination from collegiate

athletics into a team producing both athletic and academic All-Americans, EIWA Champions, and the program’s fi rst ever National Champion.

Cody led three Eagles to the 2009 NCAA Championships where juniors Mike Cannon and Kyle Borshoff earned All-America status. As a team, American fi nished in 29th place at nationals, sixth at the EIWA Championships and eighth at the Midlands Championships. The Eagles were also named the NWCA Champions of the Classroom for the second-consecutive year, having attained the highest team GPA in all Div. I wrestling with a combined 3.28 GPA while Cannon and Andrew Silber were named NWCA Academic All-Americans. American is the only school to earn NWCA All-Academic team honors and fi nish in the top-30 of the NCAA Championships in each of the last four years. American’s dual meet record of 11-5 from the 2008-09 season marked its best record since the 2005-06 campaign.

Cody’s Eagles earned their fi rst NWCA Champions of the Classroom honor during the 2007-08 season. Jasen Borshoff, Cannon, Josh Glenn and Christopher Stout were each named NWCA Academic All-Americans, marking the most individual Academic All-America honors AU had ever received in a single year. The Eagles also excelled on the mat, sending all four Academic All-American’s to the NCAA Championships where Cannon and Glenn both earned All-America status. Cannon became just the second underclassmen in AU history to earn AA status with a sixth-place fi nish at 165 lbs. and Glenn earned the distinction for the third straight year with a fi fth-place showing at 197 lbs.

During the 2006-07 season, Cody’s wrestling team built upon their successes from the previous year to reach an unparalleled high. Junior Josh Glenn repeated as the EIWA Champion in the 197 lbs. weight class and swept through the fi eld at the NCAA Championships as the No. 2 seed, going 5-0 and earning a 6-4 overtime decision over No. 1 Kurt Backes of Iowa to capture American wrestling’s fi rst National Championship. Glenn was joined by freshmen No. 10 Mike Cannon and Kyle Borshoff and sophomore Rudy Rueda at the NCAA Tournament, making for American’s largest showing at the championship event and tying its best fi nish of 17th from a year earlier. At the EIWA Tournament, Cody’s squad tied for sixth place and put two wrestlers in the fi nals, Glenn and Cannon. The `06-’07 squad also included two Academic All-Americans, Damian Swietlik and Mike Cannon, and was awarded the Sportsmanship Award at the EIWA Tournament.

The foundation that was laid in Cody’s fi rst four years at American paid off during the 2005-06 season when two Eagles were recognized with All-America honors. Senior Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov took third place at 165 lbs. at the NCAA Championships and sophomore Josh Glenn became the fi rst underclassman to earn honors with his fourth-place fi nish at 184 lbs. The pair’s individual performances coupled with Adam LoPiccolo’s one win by fall earned the team a

program-best 17th-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships. At

the EIWA Championships, Abdurakhmanov was named Most Outstanding Wrestler as he and Glenn each won individual titles for the Eagles. In the classroom, Abdurakhmanov and Matt Morkel earned NWCA Academic All-America honors and the team earned the NWCA Team Academic All-America Award. In addition, the Eagles won 13 of their 19 dual matches and placed three wrestlers in the top-10 during the year.

In the 2004-05 season, American earned its fi rst ever All-American award when senior Daniel Waters placed eighth at the NCAA Championships. After an injury-riddled career at Penn State, Waters fl ourished under the guidance of Cody. Joining Waters at the NCAA Championships that year was a then school-record three teammates, including AU’s fi rst-ever EIWA champion, fourth-ranked Abdurakhmanov. The EIWA 2004 Freshman of the Year and runner-up at 184 lbs., Glenn, and heavyweight LoPiccolo also qualifi ed for the big stage by way of their high placings at EIWAs. As a team the Eagles had their highest fi nish ever at EIWAs, placing sixth out of 13 teams in one of the country’s toughest conferences.

A year earlier, Cody led his Eagles team to many bright moments as the program continued to show improvement. Waters recorded the most wins in Division I that year, compiling a 32-5 overall record. Senior Jared Hyman fi nished his fi nal season with 24 wins, including fi nishing the season by winning 10 of 11 matches.

In his fi rst year, Cody led AU to the EIWA Tournament and was also a coach for the 2003 U.C. National Championship Gator Club team. That same year Cody introduced the highly successful Mark Cody Wrestling Camp, providing a series of individualized workouts for athletes of all ages and abilities.

Cody came to American after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State, a national powerhouse and owner of more NCAA Championships than any other school. As an assistant, Cody helped Oklahoma State to a Big 12 Championship and a fi fth-place fi nish at the 2002 NCAA Championships, where the Cowboys crowned an individual national champion and four All-Americans. In addition to Oklahoma State’s success on the mat, the team’s wrestlers were profi cient in the classroom. The squad earned recognition from the NWCA as a top-25 academic team, and two Cowboys were named Academic All-America by the NWCA. Nine of Cody’s wrestlers were also named to the Academic All-Big 12 team.

Before joining the ranks at Oklahoma State, Cody served as upper-weights coach for 12 years at the University of Nebraska. During his time in Lincoln, Cody was responsible for bringing in some of the nation’s best recruiting classes, including two National Champions, heavyweight Tolly Thompson, who won the title in 1995, and 197-pounder Brad Vering, who won it in 2000. Vering later became a two-time Olympian and had Cody in his corner with him at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials when he qualifi ed for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. While at Nebraska, 23 Cornhuskers were named All-America.

Prior to his time as a member of the Nebraska staff, Cody spent a season in Stillwater, Okla., as an assistant coach of Oklahoma State for the 1986-87 season. Cody spent the 1985-86 season as an assistant at Bloomsburg University and for his alma mater, the University of Missouri in 1984-85. In his season with the Tigers, Cody helped develop Rulon Gardner, who later went on to capture the heavyweight gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and trained with Matt Lindland, an Olympic silver medalist in 2000.

As a student-athlete, Cody was a three-time All-American. He spent his fi rst two years of college at the State University of New York at Delhi before transferring to Missouri in 1983. His greatest success came during his senior season, 1984-85, when he earned All-America status and was named the team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Cody still ranks in Missouri’s single season top-10 for falls (17) and winning percentage (.875). Cody graduated from Bellevue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business.

Also a member of the New York Athletic Club, he was a 198 lbs. fi nalist at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials.

A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Cody and his wife Holly now reside in the Washington, D.C., metro area, with their sons George, Charlie and Henry.
