Legislative CornerLegislative Corner

The General Election to be held November 2 will usher in change of enormous proportions in Michigan govern-ment. Not only will the Michigan electorate choose a new Governor, Attorney General and Secretary of State, but there will be a minimum of 52 new members of the 110 that make up the Michigan House of Representa-tives and 29 new members of the 38 that sit in the Michigan Senate!

Of the 58 incumbent House members who may be returning, 41 will have two years of experience in state government at the end of this year. Consequently, if none of the incumbents lose (which is highly unlikely in this Republican year) there will be 92 members of the 110 member House with two years or less experience in state government! The missing member from these numbers is Senator Jud Gilbert who will be returning to the House next session to serve the final two years he is able to serve in that Chamber.

In the Senate, there are 29 members who are not able to run for reelection. In most seats, the current appar-ent winner has served in the Michigan House in the past, so the learning curve will not be as steep in the Sen-ate Chamber.

Add to this amazing degree of turn-over and inexperience the fact that the current projections for the fiscal year that begins October 1 of next year is for a fall-off in revenues from the coming fiscal year of about $1.6 billion! That is a $1.6 billion reduction that will be required from the general fund revenues of about $8.3 bil-lion in the coming fiscal year that begins October 1, 2010. That amounts to a necessary reduction of almost 20%.

The best path for the members of the Michigan Cemetery Association to take in this political upheaval is to get to personally know your local legislators so that they will take your calls as well as listen to your concerns and opinions on legislation that will impact your business. In this era of term limits, you are unique and impor-tant advocates because you live and work in the districts of these legislators - you are the constituents with whom they are comfortable and whom they want to please. GCSI will work with your legislators in the politi-cal process to assure the best results - and all of your grassroots work plays an important role in getting those results! Thank you for your commitment to that end!
