The Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade and Celebration is 106 years old today. From the early days, Independence Day in Huntington Beach has meant fun at the beach, picnics in the park, strolling on the pier, hot dogs, ice cream and lining Main Street to watch the “largest 4th of July parade west of the Mississippi.” As the sun sets over Catalina Island floating in the distance, everyone gathers on the shore for Fireworks Over the Ocean, shot from the Huntington Beach Pier.

Now, expanded events contribute to the hometown experience. The early morning Surf City 5K Run and Fitness Expo, an old fashioned Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast in Lake Park, and the spectacular 3-day Pier Plaza Festival round out the celebration.

The Pier Plaza Festival will provide good, old fashioned family fun beginning at 2:00 PM with Mr. HB himself, Matt Liffreing, who will wow the crowd with a game of Surf City Trivia and prizes from local merchants followed by a variety of entertainment all afternoon and early evening prior to the Fireworks Show at 9:00 PM.

So get ready for a morning, afternoon and evening of patriotic tradition, Huntington Beach style, as we celebrate a Star Spangled 4th where, at least for just one day, Huntington Beach is everyone’s 4th of July hometown.

Welcome to the Annual Celebration of our fabulous Fourth of July Parade celebrating “A Star Spangled Fourth!”

The Annual 4th of July celebration is still the best community event of the year and demonstrates our city’s commitment to our country and its independence. It showcases the dedication of our residents and leaders and the collaboration of our volunteer groups, and businesses.

Congratulations to our grand marshals and honored guests who are the ambassadors of the parade. We are so proud to have you all in our city to share this extraordinary day with the Huntington Beach Community.

Zambelli, The First Family of Fireworks, combines four generations of family fireworks expertise for the Fireworks Spectacular that will light the night sky over the Huntington Beach Pier.

Established by patriarch and one-time fireworker, Antonio Zambelli, the Zambelli Fireworks Manufacturing Company is now known world-wide as the industry standard in design and technology. Headquartered in New Castle, Pa, the Zambelli family carries on the dreams, dedication and precision infused into the business by Antonio.

Fireworks music choreographed by Jeff Eidemiller will take on a different tone this year. As always, Jeff does a great job of mixing popular music along with traditional, patriotic music audiences expect at a fireworks show.

Fireworks Over the Ocean Presenting Sponsor, Radio Disney AM 1110, kicks off the 4th of July with a concert at 7 PM on Pier Plaza, featuring AllStar Weekend and Radio Disney’s 2009 N.B.T. winner, Jasmine.

Fireworks begin following the concert at 9 PM, complete with classic patriotic music and top hits from Radio Disney AM 1110, as the fireworks shells burst in the night sky.

Reserved seating is available on the HB Pier and tickets can be purchased online at www.hb4thofjuly.org or at the pier prior to the show. Seats are limited.

Long-time Huntington Beach resident, Matt Liffreing, has been awarded the Bill Gallienne Award for outstanding volunteerism and dedication assisting with the annual efforts of the Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade and Celebration.

For more than 27 years, Matt has assisted in several capacities. He is best known for announcing the parade on Main Street, as well as twice co-hosting live television coverage, including man-on-the street. He’s assisted with promotions and coordinated the 4th of July website, acted as MC at the annual Sponsor Recognition Event and for the last eight years entertained families at Pier Plaza with a game of Surf City Trivia.

Riding with Matt today are his daughter, Ilyse, and son, Jared, and Matt’s Fiance, Lillie Hott, and her daughter Fallon Hott.

“He is one that never says no when asked to help and always gives far more than anyone expects. Matt is creative and resourceful. He’s the person the Executive Board can always turn to and count on. This year he’ll be taking a well deserved ride in the parade with his family,” said Patricia Stier, Board Director.

The Bill Gallienne Award is given each year to an outstanding 4th of July volunteer. Bill Gallienne was instrumental in keeping the annual parade going during the depression. Fondly known to Huntington Beach locals as “Generalissimo”, Gallienne ensured the continuity of Huntington Beach’s historic tradition that has continued for 106 years.

In Memoriam

Marvin MarkerA familiar face will be missing from the Huntington Beach Parade today. For the first time in more than 50 years, Mr. Marvin Marker will not be marching with the Long Beach Junior Concert Band that he founded some 58 years ago. His sudden death on December 6th, 2009 shocked and saddened all those who had benefited from his care and compassion over the years. Please be sure to give the brave young people of LBJCB an extra cheer as they play for you today—they aren’t just entertaining Huntington Beach—they are marching for Marvin. And you may be sure that somewhere nearby, a smiling spirit in a red cap, red blazer, and a stars and stripes tie, is still keeping a watchful eye on “his kids.”

Thank you Marvin—your legacy lives on.

Happy 4th of July to Everyone!

The 4th of July Celebration continues on this great holiday in spite of the slow economy and financial stresses that have affected our city like so many others. With the unwavering determination of a dedicated Fourth of July Executive Board we can once again deliver a memorable day for all who come to Huntington Beach.

The generosity of our faithful sponsors—the hotels that donate rooms, food and parking places, restaurants who donate merchandise and meals, the newspapers, TV and radio stations that promote and cover our events, folks who purchase logo memorabilia and most critical to our success, cash sponsors, all who choose to showcase their company’s patriotic commitment to the community—enable us to carry on this great party year after year.

Dedicated volunteer city employees make this event better with their expertise and guidance. Many give up time with their own families on the 4th to keep us safe and the day running smoothly as hundreds of thousands come into town to join the fun.

We’re proud to say we are Americans and live in California but we are especially proud to say we’re from Huntington Beach, home of the best patriotic parade on the 4th of July.

2010 Fourth of July Community Grand Marshal, Bob Mandic, born and raised in Huntington Beach, is a dedicated community member who has generously given his time and talents to the betterment of our city.

Bob’s family dates back to 1939 from a home on Main Street where the parade passed by and Bob sold soft drinks along the parade route for 10 cents. His community involvement has been evident over the years, serving as HB City Council Member in 1978 & 1982 and Mayor in 1982 and 1986. He was instrumental in establishing the Sister City Program and the HB Equestrian Center, the rebuilding of the Pier and the renovation of the Newland House Museum.

Additionally, he has donated his time and dollars toward the American Legion, youth sports in the community, HBHS Music Program, Miss HB Scholarship pageant, the Children’s Need Task Force and of course, the 4th of July festivities.

“For the past 50 years, Bob had been a leader in our community and an example of a selfless citizen, in love with Huntington Beach. He’s a visionary with the dedication to turn dreams into reality. All of us are grateful for his public service and personal enthusiasm.

Teen Grand Marshal, Atticus Shaffer, plays “Brick Heck,” the youngest child of Frankie and Mike Heck on the new ABC hit MIDDLE. He’s known both in the household and out for some, let’s say odd behavior—his best friend is his backpack.

He began his career in 2006 and soon landed a guest starring role in the series The Class. That role led him to the role of “Brick” in the original ABC pilot, The Middle. Several appearances followed, such as My Name is Earl, Days of Our Lives, Carpoolers, Out of Jimmy’s Head and Human Giant. Perhaps best known for the bus stop scene he shared with Will Smith in Hancock, Atticus’ other roles in feature films include The Unborn, An American Carol, Leaving

Barstow, Opposite Day, and, most recently he plays “Albert Glass,” in the animated Disney Channel series Fish Hooks and as the “Vesuvius Twins” in Penguins of Madagascar on Nickelodeon.

Among Atticus’ many talents is his unique approach to comedy, which he has displayed in numerous commercials, most notably with AIG. He has also provided many voiceovers in feature films, including Year One, Subject: I Love You and Ice Age III.

The pride of Central Minnesota, the award-winning St. Cloud All-City Marching Band is comprised of dedicated students in grades 7-12 from area schools that do not offer a marching band opportunity.

For over 25 years, the St. Cloud All-City Marching Band has delighted crowds with unique and original shows that challenge the performers and thrill the audiences. But the performances are only part of the story. In addition to marching and music, the St. Cloud All-City Marching Band provides students the opportunity to participate in a program that emphasizes teamwork, discipline, friendship and fun!

While the band earned many awards, the true measure of success is the applause and smiles along the parade routes and the pride on the performer’s faces.

Farmers & Merchants Bank is proud to partner with the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to salute breast cancer survivors and celebrate their freedom from a disease that affects one in eight women in her lifetime. Marching with F&M on this Independence Day are breast cancer survivors and Komen advocates who are on a mission to save lives, empower others to receive early mammograms and ensure quality care for all. F&M is joining the Komen Orange County Affiliate’s mission to highlight the importance of early detection being a woman’s best protection. To encourage support for the cure, F&M is kicking off the “Pink Checking” program in conjunction with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. For every new qualified checking account opened, F&M will donate $125—the average cost of a mammogram—to the Komen Orange County Affiliate. Due to state budget

cuts, fewer women have access to lifesaving breast health care. Komen and F&M are working toward a goal to ensure that more women, including those who are low-income and uninsured, receive mammograms, treatment and support services they would otherwise be unable to afford.

Farmers & Merchants Bank is a presenting sponsor of the Komen Orange County Race for the Cure, a 5K run/walk fundraising event coming up Sunday, September 26 at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. Join Susan G. Komen for the Cure and F&M as we strive to achieve a world without breast cancer.

For information on the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, visit www.komenoc.org. For more information on Farmers & Merchants Bank’s Pink Checking program, visit www.fmb.com or stop by your local branch today!
