An impressivemix of youth and experiencehavecome togetherunderheadcoachJohnNatale to form the2010Hartfordwomen’ssoccer team.As theHawks look to return tothe summit of the America East for the firsttimesince2006,theywillrelyonasolidcoreof returning players and incorporate tenstandoutnewcomersintothemix. TheHawksreturnsevenstartersfromlastyear’ssquad,includingthreeoftheirtopfourscorersandanAmericaEastAll-RookieTeamselection.Highlighting the returnersare fourseniors,includingalynchpinoftheirdefenseinMichelleBabinandtheirthirdleadingscor-erfromlastseason,MaryBethHamilton. Babin,whomadeacareer-best18startslast season, was a consistent and reliabledefender for Natale’s squad, helping theHawkstofiveshutoutsandjust1.19goalspergame. Hamilton was a persistent force on thefront lines for the Hawks. She shined in theteam’smatchupwithlocalrivalCentralCon-necticut,pouringintwogoalsandanassisttoearnAmericaEastPlayeroftheYearrecog-nition.
Joining Babin and Hamilton as seniorleadersforNataleareKarenRayandAsh-leyMichaud. Ray, who transferred to Hart-ford from Central Connecticut, started thefirstthreegamesofthe2009seasonbeforeakneeinjuryprematurelyendedherseason.Thisyear, shewillbe looked toasaversa-tilemidfielder/defenderwhoshouldseesig-nificanttime.Michaudwalkedontotheteamtowards theendof last season,butdid notsee action. She will add valuable depth tothedefenseinherfirstfullcampaignwiththeHawks. Also returning for Hartford is BreeannaRobinson, a 2008 America East All-RookieTeam member. Robinson closed last seasonstrong with two goals and an assist in theHawks’final twogames,earningrecognitionastheleague’slastregularseasonPlayeroftheWeek.RobinsonledtheHawkswithfourgoalsand12totalpointsandreturnsforherjuniorposition,whereshewillspearheadtheHartfordoffensvefromtheforwardposition. AlexUscilladidnotgetonthefieldasafreshmanin2008,butthatchangedlastsea-soninhersophomoreyear.Making17startsin18appearances,Uscillabecameoneofthe
biggestoffensivethreatsfortheHawks,finish-ing fourthon the teamwith ten totalpoints,includingfourgoals.Uscillascoredthegame-winneragainstNorthernColorado forHart-ford’sfirstwinoftheseasonandaddedtwotalliesagainstCentralConnecticut. Another 2008 America East All-Rookiehonoree, Lauren Brodeur, returns for her ju-niorcampaignastheHawks’goalkeeper.Lastseason,BrodeurplayedeveryminuteingoalfortheHawks,postingfiveshutoutsandfinish-ingfourthintheconferencewithan.825savepercentage. An America East All-Academicselectionlastyear,Brodeurrejectedacareerhigh14shotsintheHawks’2-0shutoutofAl-banyonOctober22. Also helping to stifle opposing offensesin front of Brodeur are juniors Michele De-SantiandAmberSmyth.Inadditiontostart-ing16gamesasa lockdowndefender,De-SantinotchedherfirstcollegiatepointsintheseasonfinaleagaisntVermont,scoringagoaland assisting on another. Smyth also nettedherfirstgoal,theopeningtallyagaisntIona. Joining that talented and deep juniorclassarethreejuniorcollegetransfers,JeneeKing,AmandaLoBelloandNicoleWeil.King

comestoWestHartfordfromHolyokeCommunity College, where she ledthe team to the 2009MCCAC StateChampionship, scoring six goals andfourassists.Last season, shewasrec-ognized as a NJCAA Division III All-American. Lo Bello and Weil, along withsophomoreteammateChristianaLang,havetraversedthecontinenttoreachtheUniversity ofHartford, coming totheHawks from junior college soccerpowerhouseCypressCollege inCali-fornia. All three shined for last sea-son’s17-3-3team. Lang joins a sophomore classheadlinedbylastyear’sAmericaEastAll-Rookie Team selection, Caitlin Al-ves.Alveswilllooktobuildonastellarfreshman campaign inwhich she ap-pearedinall17games,makingninestarts and scoring her first collegiategoalagainstBryant. The Hawks boast seven othersophomores, including goal scorerShealaghBegleyandpointscorersJu-lianneOberholtzerandGiovannaVe-lardo.BegleynettedtheHawks’onlygoal against New Hampshire, whileOberholtzerandVelardoeachdishedoutanassist. Also returning to the sophomoreclassareCarolineDixon,whowilladddepthtotheattack,defenderLaurenMuser,andbackupgoalkeeperShelbyLittle. Inaddition,AmeliaPereirawillenterHartfordasasophomore.Com-ing from Portugal by way of MartinMethodistCollegeinTennessee,Perei-rawasanunstoppableoffesniveforceatMartinlastseason,scoring15goalsin21games. Fivefreshmanmakeupaclassfo-cusedonoffense.Threeforwardsjoinaforward/midfielderandamidfield-erintheirfirstcollegiateseason,hop-ingtobolsteranoffensewhichscored
justonegoaloveritsfirstsixAmericaEastgameslastyear. Arielle Aikens, Ashley Cross andNicoleSilenokcometoNatale’steamasattackingforwards.Aikensattend-edBlairAcademyinNewJerseyandleft as the school’s all-time leadinggoal scorerwith an eye-popping 99scores.Cross helpedMapleHill HighSchoolinAlbanytotwofinalsappear-ances, while Silenokwas the leadinggoalscoreratJohnJayinSouthSalem,N.Y. last season in the secondof twostraightleaguetitlesforherteam. RaelynnMikell isaforward/mid-fielder from Gilbertsville, Pa., whereshe helped Boyertown Area to twostraightPAC-10titlesandwasnamedtheleague’sMostValuablePlayerlastseason. Lizzy Clarke comes across thepond from Roade Secondary Schoolin Northamton, England. There, sheplayed five years of soccer, helpingtheteamtothe2005leaguetitle. Coach Natale’s team opens theseason on August 21 with a homematchupwith Long Island at Al-Mar-zook Field at Alumni Stadium. TheHawkshittheroadafterthat,goingtoPhiladelphiatotakepartintheTempleTournament. In conjunction with Central Con-necticut, Hartford will host the Hart-fordHawksSoccerWeekendagainstLa Salle and Columbia September3-5. After five more non-conferencetune-ups, including home matcheswithPrincetonandSaintJoseph’s, theHawks open America East play atStony Brook on September 26. Thefirst home conference game is fourdays later against Binghamton, withSenior Night scheduled for October21againstUMBC.

fouryears.LastseasontheHawkswent6-10-2overallandfinishedseventhintheAmericaEaststandings.Hart-fordalsohad twoplayershonoredby theconference,includingaFirstTeamAll-ConferenceandanAll-Rookieperformer.
Thehighlightofhiscoachingcareercamein2006whenheledHartfordtoanAmericaEastChampionshipandan appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawksreboundedfromatoughstarttofinishasoneofthehot-testteamsinthecountry.TheteamenteredNCAAplay

withanunbeatenstreakof10gamesbeforefallingto12th-rankedRutgers in thefirst round.Hartford,whichwent undefeated in conference play, knocked off twonationally-rankedopponentsandwonAmericaEastregularseasonandchampionshiptitles.TheHawksalsocapturedfourofthesixmajorpostseasonawardsgivenoutbytheconference,includingNataleandhisstaffbeingnamedAmericaEastCoachingStaffoftheYear.
In six seasonsNatale has produced18all-conferenceselections,includingeightonthefirstteam.In2006threeplayersearnedmajorawards–MeaganRiemer(StrikeroftheYear),ElizabethCook(GoalkeeperoftheYear)andKellieLeyland(DefensivePlayeroftheYear).ThetrioalsoearnedspotsontheNSCAAAll-RegionandNEWISAAll-NewEnglandteams.CookandRiemerwerefirstteampicksforeachwhileLeylandwasasecondteamchoice.
Natale began his collegiate head coaching career in2004withtheHawks,leadingayoungsquadtothefirstroundoftheAmericaEastChampionship.Heisthefifthheadcoachinthehistoryoftheprogram.

TheHawksheadcoachingpositionrepresentsahomecomingofsortsforNatale,whowasaHartfordwomen’ssoccerassistantcoachin1999(17-4-0recordthatyear).Priortothat,NatalecoachedtheWethersfieldHighSchoolboy’steamfor twoyears.Wethersfieldwon theClassL statetitlein1999andhewasnamedconferencecoachoftheyearthatseason.
Natale, aWethersfield native, excelledasaplayeratEasternConnecticutStateUniversitywherehewasacaptainandparticipatedintheAll-NewEnglandSeniorBowl.HegraduatedfromECSUin1997withabachelor’sdegreeinphysicaleducation.HealsoplayedprofessionallyfortheWesternMassPioneersoftheUSL.
Inthesummerof2006,NatalecoachedtheWesternMassLadyPioneersoftheW-League,oneofthemosthighly-regardedwomen’sleaguesintheworld.Theteamfinishedwithan11-3-1recordandadvancedtothesemifinalsoftheEasternConferenceplayoffsforthefirsttimeinteamhistory.Natale–whocoachedthreeall-leagueselections,including theU19Playerof theYearand the league’sscoringchampion–wasnamedW-LeagueCoachof theYear.
BeforecomingtoHartford,Natalewasanassistantcoachfor the Boston Breakers in 2003 and the PhiladelphiaChargetheprevioustwoyears.Inthatrole,hewasinvolvedinallaspectsofcoaching,includingpracticeplanningandcoaching,playerskilldevelopment,scouting,andvideogameandplayeranalysis.BothfranchisesreachedtheplayoffseachyearofNatale’stenureintheWUSA.HehadtheopportunitytogainvaluableexperienceundertheguidanceoftwooftheWUSA’smoresuccessfulheadcoaches–Boston’sPiaSundhage(2002-03WUSACoach

In2003,Shimminfinishedthirdinthenationinassistspergameand25thinpointspergamewhilesettingaschoolrecordwith16assists.Shealsoscoredthegame-winninggoalinCentralConnecticut’sfirst-everNCAAChampion-shipvictory,a1-0winoverBostonCollege.
Prior to her collegiate career, Shimmin played for theEvertonLadiesFootballClubofthePremierLeague.ShealsorepresentedEnglandasamemberofboththeU19andthefullnationalteamsandplayedinIceland.

Lauren Aldred is entering hersecond season as an assistantcoachwithHartford. Aldred, a 2009 graduateof Hartford, was a two-yearletterwinnerfortheHawks. In her final season shestartedall19gamesand ledthe team in scoringwith eightgoals and one assist for 17points. Shewas named to the
AmericaEastAll-ConferenceFirstTeam,theNSCAA/adi-dasAll-NortheastRegionSecondTeam,theNEWISAAll-NewEnglandSecondTeamandtheSoccerBuzzNortheastAll-RegionThirdTeam. PriortocomingtoHartford,AldredplayedtwoyearsofsocceratOklahomaBaptistUniversityandwasatwo-timeall-conferencefirstteamselection.ShealsoattendedSt.Mary’sCollege(Middlesbrough)andFredLongworthHigh School (Manchester), and played club soccer forManchesterUnitedfrom2000-03.

Lindner,adoublemajorincommunicationsandpsycholo-gy,finishedheracademiccareerwithaperfect4.0cumulativegradepointaverage.ShewasalsonamedtotheVerizonAca-demicAll-AmericaFirstTeamforthesecondstraightseason. “Katharina isamodel student-athlete,” saidDirector ofAthleticsPatMeiser.“Wearesoproudofheraccomplishments.She’sbeenenormouslysuccessfulonthefield,andevenmoreoutstandingintheclassroom.” LindnerwasalsoarepeatselectionastheAmericaEastScholar-Athleteforwomen’ssoccer,anhonorgivenoutbytheconferencetothetopscholar-athletesineachofits20sports. VinBaker,whostarredasanAll-AmericanonthebasketballcourtfortheHawks,played13seasonsintheNBA.Afour-timeNBAAll-Star,heaveraged15.0pointsand7.4reboundspergamein791careergames.BakerwaspickedeighthoverallintheJune1993NBAdraft.AtthetimehewasthehighestdraftpickeverfromaConnecticutcollegeoruniversity.
JeffBagwell,whoplayedthirdbaseforHartfordfrom1987to1989andistheNewEnglandcareerleaderinbattingaverageat.413,playedfirstbasefortheHoustonAstros.Inhis16yearswith theAstroshehit .297with449homerunsand1,529runsbatted in.He ranksamongHouston’s career leaders inbattingaverage, slugging percentage,homerunsandRBI.Hewasthe1994 National League MVP,1991Rookieof theYear,andwas a four-time All-Star (1994,1996,1997,1999).Men’sgolferJerryKelly,whotoppedtheNikeTour inearnings in1995,hasbeenimpressiveinhis12yearsplayingon
thePGATour.He’stopped$2millioninearningsinthreeofthepastsixseasons,andheplayedontheUnitedStatesPresident’sCupteamin2003.In2002,KellywassixthonthePGAmoneylistandfinishedintheTop25at13tournaments,includingwinsattheSonyOpeninHawaiiandtheAdvilWesternOpen.Men’s golfers Tim Petrovic and Patrick Sheehan havealso en-joyedsuccessonthePGATour.Petrovic,nowinhisseventhseason,brokethroughin2005withhisfirstcareervictoryattheZurichClassic. Growth, vitality, and ser-vicetothecommunityarekeyattributesofWalterHarrison’sfirst10yearsaspresidentofthe University of Hartford.Since his appointment as theUniversity of Hartford’s fifthpresidentin1998,theUniver-sityhasexperiencedaperiodofenergyandmomentumun-matched in its history. Presi-dent Harrison has overseendramatic improvements inac-ademic quality, finances, and
fundraising.
More than 7,300 students (5,600 undergraduates and 1,700graduatestudents)studyatthesevenschoolsandcollegesoftheUniversityofHartford,whichisclassifiedasadoctoralresearch–intensiveuniversitybytheCarnegieFoundationfortheAdvance-mentofTeaching.Theinstitutionhasseena15percentincreaseinundergraduateenrollment,anda23-percentincreaseinde-greesawarded,overthepastdecade.Ahighlyvisiblefigureoncampus,PresidentHarrisonisknownforhisenthusiasmforstudentlifeandUniversityactivities,andisfondlyreferredtoasWaltbymanystudents.

President Harrison’s community involvement is extensive. 1969.AfteraninterimofthreeyearstoserveasacaptainintheUnitedStatesAirForce,PresidentHarrisonearnedadoctoratefrom the University of California–Davis. His doctoral disserta-tion, “OutofPlay:BaseballFiction fromPulp toArt,”wasoneoftheearliestscholarlytreatmentsofbaseballanditsplaceinAmericanlife. In1982PresidentHarrisonleftfull-timeteachingtotakeanad-ministrative position at Colorado College. He joinedGehrungAssociates University Relations Counselors in 1985, becomingpresidentofthefirmshortlythereafter.In1989PresidentHar-risonmovedtotheUniversityofMichigan,wherehebecamevicepresidentofuniversityrelationsandsecretaryoftheuniversity. One of only 30 women direc-tor of athletics among the 335institutions competingat theDivi-sion I level, In June of 2009 shewasnamedtheNortheastRegionI-AAAUnder Armour Athletic Di-rectoroftheYearforthesecondtime(2006),andinMayof1999,shewasnamedoneofthenation’s
top50women’ssportsexecutivesbyStreet&Smith’sSportsBusinessJournal.
AtHartford,Meiserheadsateamthatisresponsibleforgrowingtheathleticsandacademicqualityoftheprogram,enhancingrevenueandextendingtheprogramintothecommunity.
In Meiser’s tenure, seven sports (women’s basketball, men’s soccer,women’s soccer, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s
volleyball)havewonAmericaEastConferencechampionshipsandei-therreachedNCAADivisionItournamentornationalpostseasonplay.Basketball,inparticular,hasemergedwithMeiser’shiringofJenniferRizzotti.Thewomen’sbasketballteamhasbeencrownedAmericaEastConference champion and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2002,2005,2006,2008and2010.Themen’steamsetaschoolrecordwith18winsin2007-08andadvancedtotheAmericaEastChampionshipfinalsforthefirsttimeinschoolhistory.
RevenueenhancementhasalsobeenanareaofgrowthforHartfordun-derMeiser’sleadership.Thishastakenplacethroughanexpandedfundraisingandalumnirelationseffort,developmentofacorporatespon-sorshipprogram,implementationofalicensingprogramandsuccessfulgrantsubmissions.Mostsignificantly,Hartfordathleticsembarkedona$10millionathleticscapitalcampaigninAprilof2003.Thecampaign,calledHomeFieldAdvantage, funded the renovationof theexistingsoccerandlacrossefield,therelocationandconstructionofasoftballfield,theconstructionofabaseballfieldandwillincludeconstructionofatracksurroundinganall-purposefield.ThegroundbreakingforHomeFieldAdvantagetookplaceinAprilof2005,andPhaseIoftheprojectwascompletedin2007.PhaseIIispresentlyunderway.

Student-athlete and staff engagment has been important forMeiser.SheispastchairoftheGreaterHartfordConventionandVisitorsBu-reau.Herappointmentcameatacriticaltimeasthecityopeneda$350millionconventioncenter.MeiserwasnamedaConnecticut“WomanofMerit”bytheGirlScoutsinJune2000.SheisaboardmemberofboththeConnecticutSpecialOlympicsandtheYMCA.Sheisaformerboardmemberof theConnecticutWomen’sHall of Fame. While serving in2007,MeiserservedasCo-ChairoftheCWHFGalathatcelebratedthe35thanniversaryofTitleIX.Theeveningbroughttogetherfourhun-dredofthetopfemaleOlympiansandnationalchampionswithtiestothestateofConnecticut.
Meiser hasalsobeen involvedwith various intercollegiate committeesandorganizationsattheconference,regionalandnationallevels.SheservesontheExecutiveCommitteeofNACDAandisapastPresidentoftheDivisionI-AAAAthleticsDirectorsAssociation(NACDA),hasbeenaprofessionalsportliaison,memberofthesoccerrulescommitteeandac-tiveasaNCAACertificationrepresentative.Overtheyears,shehasalsoservedavarietyofrolesintheAmericaEastConferenceandispresentlychairoftheExecutiveCommittee.
Prior to joining theHawks,Meiserwas theassociateathleticsdirectorforadministrationandseniorwomen’sadministratorattheUniversityofConnecticut.Duringher10yearsatConnecticut, sheplayedapivotalroleintherejuvenationoftheathleticsprogram.
BeforearrivingatConnecticut,Meiserwas theheadwomen’sbasket-ballcoachandatenuredfacultymemberatPennState(1971-81).Shegavethefirstwomen’sbasketballscholarshipatPennStatein1974andadvancedtheprogramtoTop-20statusinthelate1970s.Inaddition,shecoachedtheGoldMedal-winningEastteamintheinaugural1979NationalSportsFestival.

In 2009, the Hartford women’s soccer team •pitched two shutouts at home at Al-Marzook Field, going 4-3-2 during their home schedule. During their America East Championship sea-•sonof2006,theHawkswent8-2-0intheirfirstseason at the newly renovated Al-Marzook Field. The 2006 America East title game was a •hard-fought 1-0 victory over Maine played in front of the home fans at Al-Marzook Field. It was the sixth home shutout of the season that year.

The voluntary training cards provided arebasic routines that follow similar protocolsyouwillexperienceoncampus.However,wehavesimplifiedthemtomeettheequipmentyoumostlikelywillhaveavailabletoutilizeduring the summer training period. Whenyoucometocampusyouwillbeexposedtothefulleffectsanddirectionofthestrengthandconditioningprogram.
