The Devastation of Leogane, Haiti -- January 12, 2010

Leogane is about 20 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It sits directly atop the fault line which caused the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010.

In less than one minute in Leogane, the epicenter of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake, over 90% of the buildings were destroyed or damaged. Many remaining ones fell victim to later aftershocks.

Pre-earthquake, Leogane’s population was 134,000. Some estimates of the death toll in Leogane have been as high 30,000. Nearly everyone in the town was touched by death.

Aid Was Slow Reaching Leogane

The media reported that no search and rescue teams reached Leogane for six days. A handful of medics along with staff and students who had survived the collapse of a local nursing college. They did their best to provide trauma care, including amputations, without anesthetic or proper equipment.

The mayor reported hearing cries coming from the buildings for days following the earthquake, but he had no equipment to remove the debris. The cries slowly fell silent and no recovery efforts were ever made due to lack of equipment.

Roody Joseph, one of our board members, witnessed the people of the city trying to unearth family members and friends; only to have structures crumble, entombing the rescuers.

Large aid groups slowly arrived and began offering aid but we are making God’s touch of provision and love personal to those we serve. Donations go directly from your hands through ours to theirs.

Aid Was Slow Reaching Leogane

Two weeks after the major earthquake, Pastor Wayne Golden, another board member, joined Roody. Together, they visited tent camps housing survivors. Repeatedly, they heard the cries of mothers suffering from malnutrition who could no longer produce breast milk and were in need of formula.

Roody and Wayne began to witness dozens of infants under the age of six months being abandoned in the streets and in fields.

Contacting major world aid agencies, Roody and Wayne discovered no one had baby formula, so we made it our mission to identify needy babies and supply as many of them as we could with needed nutrition until the larger aid groups settled in and could assume responsibility for the provision of baby food. We were the only agency meeting this vital need for nearly two months.

RELIEF EFFORTS – Distributing Baby Formula

• We documented over 500 infants and toddler living in the three main tent camps of Leogane in urgent need of food. Personal information of mothers in need was recorded and baby supplies distribution schedules coordinated.

• We thank Mead Johnson for donating three pallets of Enfamil and toddler food and Clay Corrigan of ApParent Project (at right) who donated use of his SUV and enough food and diapers for 500 children and spent the day visiting the camps with Roody to deliver them.

• Several of our young people, ages 17-20, volunteered to help deliver the baby supplies. To avoid potential mugging, they stocked backpacks with food and supplies and personally made deliveries to mothers at their camp sites.

• These volunteers extended Christ’s love as they spent time with the mothers and infants and prayed with each family, thanking God for His faithful provision during such a cataclysmic event. What a wonderful service opportunity for our youth and chance to share God’s love in a practical way!

RELIEF EFFORTS – Tents & Tarp Distribution

We purchased and distributed tents to provide emergency shelter. We also provided the distribution site and native personnel to provide the people of Leogane with approximately 10,000 tarps.

RELIEF EFFORTS – Assisting the Elderly and Infirm

Sixty-four year old Andre Mathurin, is shown at left with the three-month supply of food supplement, a tent, a tarp, new shoes and eyeglasses we delivered to him.

“Brother Ma”, as our boys call him, is honorary grandfather to the youth in our Gideon Boys’ Club program.

Without our assistance, Mathurin would most likely not be alive today. He was too frail to fight the mobs near the aid trucks and said he was, and still is, afraid to venture out into the crowds on the streets.

And there are many others like him – the five widows living together under a tree with no shelter, food or security; the amputee who no longer even has his crutches and many others. We offer their best chances for survival.

RELIEF EFFORTS – Coordinating Medical Care

Marie Yolene Paulin is a two year old with a severely burned arm and hand who was pulled from the rubble the day of the earthquake. Initial treatment consisted merely wrapping her scalded little arm in a towel.  The pain and infection remained untreated for two weeks before Roody met her. 

Through our network partners, Roody was able to coordinate medical treatment and transportation for Marie and her grandmother so she could receive adequate medical treatment. The doctor told the grandmother, had Marie’s burns remained untreated, she most likely would have died within the week from the extensive infection afflicting her arm.

Marie’s grandmother was unable to care for her, so Roody arranged temporary placement in an orphanage where she will be safe until her grandmother is once again able to properly care for her.

RELIEF EFFORTS – Rescuing Displaced Children

Promised Provision Ministries partnered with Danita’s Children to help the displaced children of Leogane. Logistics teams in the U.S. and Haiti coordinated efforts to locate and secure appropriate vehicles to transport 36 children from Leogane to the northern province of Oanaminthe.

These children are now safe and cared for in the Hope For Haiti Children’s Center run by Danita’s Children. (www.danitaschildren.org)

Canadian journalist Jessica Leeder of The Globe and Mail is giving voice to the post-earthquake needs of our girls who lived in the Christian Home for Girls in Leogane.

REBUILDING LIVES – Transitional Housing Communities

• We helped secure year-long leases on appropriate parcels of land for the purpose of constructing transitional housing communities complete with security, sanitation and water.

• These communities are intended to provide a safe, protected environment in which qualifying people can live for a full year while they figure out where they will go and what they will do to rebuild their lives.  At the end of the year, residents can simply "pack up" their temporary shelter (complete with wooden bunk beds and shelving - see photos above) and relocate it to a permanent location of their choice.

• The majority of the residents of these safe havens are single mothers (with designated play areas for children) as well as elderly and handicapped people. The shelters protect residents from the rampant crime of the tent cities as well as the torrential rains.

An added bonus is that a number of our young men now employed and are obtaining valuable construction knowledge and skills as they are being paid to build these transitional shelters.
