The new Active Park Assist system uses sensors on the front and rear of the vehicle, working in conjunction with Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS), to guide the vehicle into a parking space. How it works: • The driver activates the system by pressing an instrument panel button, which activates the ultrasonic sensors to measure and identify a feasible parallel parking space • The system prompts the driver to accept the system’s assistance to park • The steering system takes over and steers the car into the parking space. The driver still shifts the transmission and operates the gas and brake pedals • A visual and/or audible driver interface advises the driver about the proximity of other cars, objects and people while providing instructive prompts • While the steering is all done automatically, the driver remains responsible for safe parking and can interrupt the system by grasping the steering wheel For 2010, Ford Escape adds five new features that improve safety, reduce driver distractions and aid drivers. For 2010, Ford Escape adds five new features that improve safety, reduce driver distractions and aid drivers. Integrated Blind Spot Mirrors, MyKey™, a Rear View Camera System and Active Park Assist are all now available to Escape owners, and Escape is one of the first Ford vehicles to feature the latest-generation hands-free SYNC® system – now with Traffic, Directions & Information – helping reduce distractions while accessing important route and safety information.

The new technologies build on Escape’s unsurpassed crash ratings – a “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and 5-star government ratings in all crash tests. • Active Park Assist for parallel parking assistance

• SYNC® with Traffic, Directions & Information

Powertrain: Hybrid comprising Duratec 2.5-liter I-4 Atkinson Cycle, 153 hp @ 6,000 rpm, 136 ft.-lb. torque @ 4,500 rpm and permanent magnet AC synchronous motor, 94 hp @ 5,000 rpm

Series: 2WD, 4WD, Limited

Fuel Economy: FWD: 34 mpg city/31 hwy. AWD: Being EPA-certified

MSRP: Starting at $29,750

Escape Hybrid for 2010 is expected to continue its claim, along with the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, as America’s most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly SUV. This year, Escape Hybrid returns 34 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, allowing you to do more and go farther with less fuel.

The Hybrid powertrain includes a 2.5-liter I-4 coupled with a 94 hp electric motor. Aiding economy, refined aerodynamics and low-rolling-resistance tires also contribute to a quiet, refined cabin environment. The advanced powertrain also incorporates electronic throttle control (ETC). This technology replaces the manual linkage between accelerator and throttle with a control unit that calculates the optimal throttle position from a number of sensors. ETC is a form of the state-of-the-art, drive-by-wire technology.

Escape Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter gasoline I-4 designed to run on the Atkinson combustion cycle combined with a 94 hp electric motor. An advanced engine processor enables nearly imperceptible transitions between gas and electric vehicle mode.

Hybrid models also feature a unique powertrain damping system designed to reduce vibrations and feedback to the driver and other vehicle occupants.

SYNC® lets Escape owners operate digital media players and Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones via voice commands or with the steering wheel’s redundant radio controls.

MyKey™ helps encourage safer teen driving, allowing parents to program the key through the vehicle message center to incorporate features such as:

• Persistent Belt-Minder® chime

• Limited top speed of 80 mph

• Traction control system that limits tire spin cannot be deactivated

• Audio system mute until safety belt is buckled; volume then limited to 44 percent of maximum volume

• A speed alert chime at 45, 55 or 65 mph

Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) reduces the load on the engine since a belt-driven power steering pump is no longer required. Built-in Pull-Drift Compensation detects road conditions – such as a crowned road surface or crosswinds – and adjusts the steering system to help the driver compensate for pulling and drifting.
