Introduction Experiencing difficulties in life? Feng Shui 風水 may be able to provide some answers. The Chinese believe that there are five levels of fortune that can be used to benefit human beings. The best type of fortune is received through good karma bestowed at birth. The second type is from luck generated during one’s life. The third type is manifested through the proper application of Feng Shui. The fourth type is developed by being of good morals, character, and virtue. The fifth type is achieved through a proper education. Combining these levels together can bring about good fortune almost each and every year, but only if applied correctly. Since good karma and luck cannot be controlled by humans alone, Feng Shui becomes an important component – but only if one takes the time to learn exactly what it is and how it works.

What is Feng Shui and How Can it Help Me? The movement of the planets and other heavenly bodies in the solar system has a profound impact on the earth and its inhabitants: they affect the changing of the tides, growth seasons for plants, mating periods for animals, atmospheric pressure changes which result in varying weather patterns, and the like. The effect on human beings, while subtle in nature, is no different. Feng Shui is the ancient art of Chinese geomancy that utilizes symbols, astrological signs, ancient mathematics, and directional analysis to uncover prosperity and minimize problems affecting human beings each year, month, day, and even hour based on the flow of energy through the universe. Properly aligning one’s living space and office with the cycles of nature can bring about good fortune and benefit individuals, families, organizations, teams, countries, and businesses alike.

In the Chinese almanac, there are a number of cycles used to track the movement of time and space. Astrologically, there are twelve animal signs, each with five different character types, based on the elemental qualities of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. This sixty year cycle repeats in sets of three Yuan 元 to complete 180-year cycles. From a Feng Shui perspective,

each Yuan is divided into nine cycles of 20 years each, called Yun 運, which set into motion the directional fortunes for any given year, based on a complex combination of two other ancient Chinese mathematical formulas, the Ho Tu 河圖 (illustrated above, left), which is based on the Eight Trigrams of the Yi Jing 易經, and the Lo Shu 洛書 Nine Palaces (illustrated on the right) which is often referred to in the West as the Magic Square. These two maps, when properly utilized in conjunction with the movement of the zodiac, can be used to predict events, design homes, manage floor plans, influence important decisions, and help with anything else that requires some foresight and direction. Feng Shui can take into account the position of your home and office related to beneficial and problematic compass directions and the birth dates and times of those dwelling within it. Each component is analyzed to determine the fate and energy flow within the home or office over the course of any given period. While private consultations can be arranged to ensure maximum effect and understanding, the purpose of this document is to provide some basic guidance that can be useful in planning for the New Year and beyond. How to Use this Book Follow these basic instructions to reap your Chinese Astrology and Feng Shui fortune in 2010:

Determine your Zodiac Sign Select your animal from the Astrology Tables on p. 52, based on your year of birth, noting that the Chinese calendar extends from February 4 – February 3 each year. Therefore, a baby born on January 24, 2010 is still considered to belong to the sign of the Ox. Advanced practitioners may decide to use the lunar year as the basis for your sign selection; as compared to the static solar year noted above, the start of this period changes each year and is generally calculated as the second new moon following the Winter Solstice. In this case, a baby born between February 14, 2010 and February 2, 2011 would fall under the sign of the Tiger. One must understand that Feng Shui is a very precise art with many levels and dimensions – as such, practice diligently and soon you will understand more of the advanced terminology embedded herein. In the ancient times, before language was invented, people had difficulty keeping track of time. Since the lives of man and animals was so close at the time, the Chinese decided to name each year with an animal. The Chinese zodiac divides every birth year into twelve (12) animal signs, of which there are five types each, resulting in a total of sixty (60) astrological cycles. Each animal has general characteristics as described in the pages to follow; remember that although different years and months have various attributes, the sign can (and will) embody the entire spectrum of positive and negative traits. When reviewing a sign, be sure to understand all aspects so as to grasp the breadth of possibilities that represents each section of the zodiac.

MOUSE (SHU 鼠 ): the first sign of the zodiac dwells in the North and is said to have bit the net between Heaven and Earth, opening the communication floodgates for Yin 陰 and Yang 陽 . As such, they are smart people and fast talkers; they possess the ability to develop large

business networks and generally have good dealings with people. Unfortunately, they may tend towards nervous behavior and can take on too many responsibilities, burdening their existence and creating unnecessary stress.

OX (NIU 牛): this sign unknowingly carried the Mouse across the Yellow River who then ran to reach Buddha first, leaving the Ox as the second sign of the Chinese zodiac. Living in the North-Northeast, the Ox is a strong, physical being who carries heavy loads for others, never tiring

or losing stamina unless he or she becomes bored or lazy. Oxen can become very stubborn at times and often have difficulty expressing themselves, especially in matters of love, relationships, and marriage, but they are good friends to have indeed.

TIGER (HU 虎): the third sign of the zodiac resides in the East-Northeast and is both a powerful nurturer and natural leader, being so quick and agile in movement. Sometimes they cannot see the difference between right and wrong, due to their one-sided pursuits. BOAR (ZHU 豬): the twelfth and last sign resides in the North-Northwest and represents the ‘baby’ of the Chinese zodiac who inherits the good and bad fortune of all the signs before him or her. As such, these people live a long, enjoyable, even-keeled life, oftentimes supported by others. They always enjoy poking fun at those who do not have it so easy. Determine Your Nine Palace Star Select your Nine Palace Star from the Astrology Tables on p. 52, based on your gender and year of birth, noting that the Chinese calendar extends from February 4 – February 3 each year. As described in step one, you may also use the lunar New Year as the basis for your star selection, which is generally the 2nd new moon following the Winter Solstice on December 21st of each year. The Nine Star system divides every birth year into different palaces, resulting in mixed possibilities each year in sets of nine that are governed by a greater cycle of twenty years (Yun 運), and an even-larger 180-year cycle (Yuan 元). A number from one (1) to nine (9) is assigned to each birth year, and varies according to gender. Each Nine Palace Star has a primary position and corresponding direction, as illustrated in the following chart:

General characteristics of the Nine Palace stars are as follows:

One (1) White: this palace corresponds to the Northern direction and the element of Water. These people have a particular combination of

prenatal and postnatal intelligence that lends well to career success and advancement, particularly since these individuals are also very ambitious. This position corresponds to the entirety of Winter and culminates with the sunlight that breaks out at the start of each Spring. As such, these individuals have difficulty early in life, but from middle age forward, they become very lucky and successful and it is easy for them to reach their goals and desires. However, because this sign easily encounters difficulty and danger, such people must develop a strong conscious to overcome life’s obstacles.

Two (2) Black: this palace corresponds to the Southwest direction and the element of Earth. These people often become kings or high-ranking

officials; however, this does not mean the alignment is all good. Instead, one should think of this palace as representing premium soil: if you plant good seeds in it, great results will occur, while if you plant bad ones, it will result in the worst of the worst. These individuals are thus very powerful (physically speaking) but must be careful of what they foster in life for they can bring about growth or destruction in equal measures.

Three (3) Jade: this palace corresponds to the East direction and the element of Wood. Individuals born under this palace possess high

levels of integrity and kindness; as such, others often trust them. This position can be likened to the sun rising in the East, which means that their Yang energy is very strong; thus, be careful that one’s rising energy does not lead to gossiping, which will cause relationship problems and difficulties at school or in the workplace. Four (4) Green: this palace corresponds to the Southeast direction and to the element of Wood. These individuals are kind, internally strong, and

possess a good combination of practicality and intelligence. Because the Eastern Wood star comes to life in this palace, these individuals correspond to the springtime and are good communicators. They have societal reputations because the Yang energy gradually progresses as the sun rises higher into the sky. Compare Signs Once you know your sign, star, and trigram, you can begin to learn how your alignment integrates with the current year. Read the 2010 Annual Forecast on pp. 31-42, which explains how the year affects all individuals, and learn how your astrological sign compares to the current year’s alignment using the Compatibility Charts on pp. 53-55. If the current year is an animal whom you have a favorable partnership with, good fortune will be available during the year for you to reap. For example, Horses, Dogs, and Boars will have good luck in 2010, due to the fact that they pair harmoniously with the Tiger. Conversely, the Tiger can help protect him or herself during their year by carrying or wearing a Horse or Dog amulet. When choosing how to utilize symbols and directions, always remember to use personal creativity and insight in a logical and thoughtful manner. While there are really no right or wrong ways to apply Feng Shui, you can learn over time how to maximize good fortune and minimize challenges each year.

Compare Stars and Trigrams Having compared your individual sign to the annual sign, one must now do the same with your Nine Palace alignment and Eight Trigram direction. Read the current year’s Feng Shui Forecast on pp. 43-50, comparing results with both your Trigram’s native direction and Nine Palace birth star using the Compatibility Charts on pp. 53-55. Although your palace and main direction never change (as it is set at birth), your fortune changes as your star moves through phases of good, bad, and magical positions each year, and through the greater cycles of twenty (20) and 180 years. At the same time, new stars travel into your native direction, bringing about a mix of positive and negative results as well. The amount of fortune

gathered each year depends on how you travel through these oceans of changes by integrating two key concepts in Feng Shui: where you are coming from and where you are going. First, find out what is happening in your native Trigram’s direction (e.g., the original location of your birth palace on p. 20); second, discover what is happening in the direction your Nine Palace star occupies for the year (see p. 43). For example, a female born in 1973, who corresponds to the Six (6) White star, will find good fortune coming her way from the Northwest, which is the original location of the Six (6) White star, and also in the East, where the Six (6) White star resides in 2010. Overall, in any given year, four directions are good and four directions are problematic, influencing each palace in one way or another. This relates to the partnerships illustrated above, along with the numerical partnerships of the particular 20-year Yun, which for the period 2004-2024 is the Eight (8) White star alignment. From a Feng Shui perspective, it is important to try to channel the energy of one’s good directions to achieve success and mitigate damages from the challenging directions to avoid misfortune. Year of the Tiger

Gong Yi Fa Cai 恭喜發財! In 2010, the Chinese New Year falls on February 14th in China, which happens to be Valentine’s Day in the United States; yet, interestingly enough, the second new moon following the Winter Solstice on December

21, 2009 (which defines the start of the lunar year) actually reveals itself on February 13, 2010 at 9:52pm in New York City (4:52pm for our kama`āina in Hawai`i). Be sure to leave the front door of your home open this evening, especially if it is facing in a beneficial direction, so that you can gather good fortune throughout the night. It also means that a special evening extravaganza should be planned on the East Coast to celebrate the festivities, as Tigers in general love to orchestrate and be a part of large, oftentimes monumental, parties!

The Chinese call the year Geng Yin 庚寅, which is the 27th cycle in the sixty year calendar, symbolized by the element of Metal over the eastern Earth, represented by the terrestrial animal sign of the Tiger. In the ancient times of prehistoric China, there was no such thing as Yin or Yang – instead, earthly or Yin energy was symbolized by the Tiger, while heavenly or Yang energy was symbolized by the Dragon. During this long, primitive era, the people would tie knots in cords of rope to record the passage of events in time. It was only thousands of years later, when written language was invented, that the terms Yin and Yang were coined. What this tells you is that the Tiger comes from a time of long ago, when the land was open and free and beasts ruled the world. Humans had to hide in caves and develop intelligence in order to figure out how to survive in this rugged world. Fire was used in a very primitive, uncontrolled form, and communication was animated

in nature. Ancestors of dinosaurs flew above in the sky and strong, powerful beasts prowled the mountainous and wooded terrain below. In many ways, this is symbolic of a key aspect of the Tiger – primal strength. The Tiger species itself is said to have first come from southern China before spreading throughout the Asian continent. It is said that Tigers have a marking on their foreheads that looks strikingly similar to the Chinese character Wang 王 , which can be translated as ‘the one who connects the heavens with humanity and the earth,’ otherwise known in the ancient world as the king or ruler of the people. This is a symbol carried by all Tigers, for better or for worse; as such, it is important in life for individuals born under this sign to learn how to deal with it or else peril will result. In the early days of mankind, life was difficult. As such, all species needed to sustain their bloodlines and thus Tigers are excellent at rearing offspring and maintaining families. The Tian Shi 天師 would always say that Tigers not only take care of their children, they take care of all the children. A well-known Chinese proverb states “however vicious a Tigress be, she will never eat her own cubs.” Therefore, the concept of the Tiger and Yin is one of earthly strength, animalistic tendency, and also primal survival. It’s no wonder that the Tian Shi 天師 lineage calls the Tiger the “Sign of Natural Might.” Tigers have to be careful in their dealings with other Tigers, however – too much strength accumulates when they get together, and danger often results. Remember that Tigers are fiercely competitive with one another. When Yin Metal falls over the Yin Earth of the Tiger, the aspect is called the Tiger Exiting the Mountain. Some call this year the Tiger Descending the Mountain, but this is incorrect – a Tiger never considers the idea of retreat or the possibility of descending to lower ground. This mix of energies depicts the old, wise sage who has experienced the trials and tribulations of ancient life on earth and finally comes back to his village, providing key secrets on how to move forward as a community. In 2010, descending Metal

energy from above meets rising Wood energy from below; this creates a balance of opposing forces, which brings about a fair and balanced quality of energy, resulting in just and cooperative behavior. A simplistic wisdom will emerge that can help people overcome obstacles, especially when acting wisely and with a kind hand. Remember that Tigers always move forward toward their goal; as such, even when peaceful and loyal, the Tiger is still straightforward in nature. One challenging aspect of Metal

with Wood is that it can result in environmental damage, destruction, pollution, and dryness (with the possibility of drought). There is also the chance that a nuclear accident or incident will take place in 2010, so if you work in an industry related to atomic power, be very careful at the workplace. One should note that the special Na Yin 納音 element of the year is Wood of the Pine Forest, which travels sonically through the cosmos. Pine is used extensively in herbal medicine as a ‘source of life,’ remaining evergreen through the four seasons, standing tall through the changes that occur within the constructs of time and space. The pine tree can increase one’s life expectancy if used on a regular basis, as it provides solid and consistent energy through the entirety of the year, similar to what is expected to occur in 2010. Remember that in the forest, no other plants can grow underneath the pine; similarly, in the body, no diseases can survive if one uses pine as an herbal remedy. The seed of the pine (called Bai Zi Ren子仁柏) can be translated as the ‘son of heaven that contains the essence of life necessary to live over one hundred years.’ In fact, each human being is like a pine tree that must be properly nourished through the four seasons. As such, 2010 is a good year to take care of your physical self and those of others using the concept of the pine tree to consistently renew yourself throughout the year. You may also want to make seasonal Feng Shui

adjustments this year to mirror the effects of pine in the natural world. According to the Tian Fu 天符 or Heavenly Register, the Tiger itself is symbolized in the calendar by Yin 寅 , which depicts a man standing stiffly, wearing a hat, hands raised in greeting. This terrestrial alignment, although reckless like a thief or bandit, resembles a heavenly predator that teaches through difficult lessons, the master who makes delusion and attachment disappear. The Tiger is a physical being that needs real, tangible results at all times. They do not really care what those results are, so long as they can see them ‘in the flesh.’ They are rarely sick and therefore have a low tolerance for those who cannot overcome disease. Such individuals are powerful people who have key positions in society. They do not worry about money nor do they get caught up in other people’s feelings – they have their own to contend with. Since the Tiger stands in the East-Northeastern direction and corresponds to the 3-5am time period, be sure to keep your front door and windows open during this time (particularly those that face the Northeast or, more specifically, the East-Northeast) to gather good fortune on the Chinese New Year!

Tai Sui Wu Huan Each year, a Tai Sui 太歲, acting like a policeman in the heavens, governs the annual cycle, ruling the year and influencing the whole of the zodiac, the eight cardinal directions, and their 24 directional subdivisions of 15° each on the compass. These sixty generals are said to represent the earliest ancestor of those born during the year and are symbolized by stars surrounding the planet Jupiter. In 2010, the ruler is Tai Sui Wu Huan 太歲鄔桓 (pictured on p. 4), who is positioned in the East-Northeast within the 52.5°‐67.5° range of the compass. The main energy of the year is coming into the

world from this direction, and it is pointed directly at the West-Southwest. General Wu Huan comes from an ancient tribe of nomadic people, who traveled across the mountainous and wooded terrain of China, working to keep in harmony the warring states that spanned the countryside. They would carry with them plant remedies from the forests to assist with healing, using the symbol of pine to ward off disease through the four seasons. 2010 will therefore bring about sweeping changes in medicine and there is the potential for major discoveries in the treatment of cancer, AIDS, and other currently ‘incurable’ diseases. At the same time, the prevalence of illness will increase, resulting in the need for more medical providers and cures. If you are looking to change careers this year, the health care and education industries are projected to be the best pursuits. General Guidance Because General Wu Huan sits in the East-Northeast, the opposite direction, West-Southwest, lies in the region called the “Broken Year” or Sui Po 嵗破, which brings misfortune and authority-related problems for those born in the year of the Monkey. As in every year, be sure to always sit with the Tai Sui behind you – and never directly facing him – or misfortune will inevitably result. It would be like speeding in your car on a highway knowing that a policeman was going to be giving tickets up ahead – a sure recipe for disaster. Good fortune will come in 2010 to the Horse and Dog; the Boar and, to a lesser extent, Mouse can also find some beneficial energy as well. This sign has three favorite pastimes: soaring through life, spewing fireballs, and relaxing amidst their treasures. Unfortunately, 2010 is not a good time for these endeavors – the Dragon will actually reap misfortune every time he or she tries to battle the strong, forceful nature of the Tiger. It is better for you to lay low and make plans for the future – especially with your big year coming up in 2012, which will bring with it colossal changes to the earth as we currently know it. Try to protect your wealth at all costs this year, and given the educational nature of the Tiger and the Wood element, it might be a good time for you to focus on developing new skills by taking a class or seminar. Snake The Snake has misfortune in 2010, which is quite a change from the overall success of 2009 – this is due to their hot, fiery nature and association, at times, with the Monkey, which is a sign in peril this year. 2010 Feng Shui Forecast

Overview Each year, the numbers of the Lo Shu 洛書 Magic Square fly through the nine palaces (the eight cardinal directions plus the center) to establish four lucky and four misfortunate directions, each corresponding to a trigram. As mentioned earlier, this ancient mathematical system is one of the basic methods for calculating Feng Shui fortunes in any given year, month, day, or even hour. Based on the alignment of the numbers in the Magic Square, as compared to positioning of the Eight Trigrams and the Nine Palaces of the 8th Yun, fortunes are assigned to the eight main directions of 45° around the 360° of a compass during each particular year, with each section further divided into 24 subdivisions of 15° each. When analyzing directions, there are a few basic guidelines to consider. First, the direction you face when walking out the front door of your primary residence represents the overall fortune of the home and its inhabitants in any given year. As such, if your home ‘faces’ East in 2010, all dwellers will have the opportunity to reap the good fortune and benefits it contains. A bedroom in this direction of the home will contain the best fortune in 2010, especially if you are planning to have a baby this year. For individuals with difficulty conceiving, you can direct your bed in this direction to assist with fertility; in addition, seeing water in this direction will generate Sheng Cheng Shui 生成水, which can be translated as the ‘water that completes life.’ Four (4) Green – North The Four (4) Green star flies into the Northern position for 2010 and assists in matters related to love, romance, and artistic talent. Be careful of extramarital affairs and be proper in relationships of the heart, for also residing in this direction is the Three Killings or San Sha 三煞, which brings danger and misfortune for those who do not tread carefully. As such, do not disturb the ground in this direction and avoid doing any housing renovations. If your front door faces this direction, be sure to hang a Ba Gua mirror to deflect the energy of the Three Killings. Frequently using a front door that lies in this direction for 2010 will disturb the San Sha from its continued opening and closing. If the front door of your home or office faces North, you might want to consider using an alternate entryway for the year – if you do not have this option, be sure to never slam the door shut, particularly with youngsters around. The ancient texts state that positioning four (4) Qi Lin 麒麟 in this

This ancient spiritual creature is described as half-unicorn, half-dragon with excellent eyesight; it was said that the Qi Lin walked so softly that its hooves made no sound, perhaps because it was so softhearted that it did not want to crush the blades of grass beneath its feet. This is how one should move in the North this year! Classical Feng Shui experts agree that you never want to sit with your back to the San Sha, so do not position your desk in the North, facing South this year or you will be ‘stabbed in the back,’ whether it pertains to angry coworkers, a lack of ability to focus, difficulty concentrating, or the spreading of rumors and gossip. The North has now been affected for three straight years – the Tai Sui resided here in 2008, The Five (5) Yellow star in 2009, and now the Three Killings or San Sha in 2010, so be sure to stay focused and work to manage the trials and tribulations the year will bring. You can hang protection charms in the South, facing North, to assist with mitigating negative energies coming from this direction. A Bai Hu Fu 白虎符 or White Tiger charm would work especially well. If your native trigram is North, be patient – things will calm down soon. Five (5) Yellow – Southwest The problematic Five (5) Yellow star resides in the Southwest in 2010, which unfortunately is also the home of the Sui Po 嵗破 or ‘Broken Year’ star, carrying misfortune as it stands in opposition to the Tai Sui, which sits in the Northeast. Remember to consider the following age-old advice when welcoming in any Chinese New Year:

• The Chinese believe that all household clutter should be removed and the home thoroughly cleaned before the start of the New Year. By ‘sweeping away’ any remaining bad luck from the preceding year, it opens up space to bring in good luck for the New Year. However, do not clean on the New Year, or you will risk sweeping away your good fortune!

• It is good luck to have a lion dance performed on the premises during New Year’s festivities to help ward off evil spirits and welcome the good fortune of the New Year.

• Noodles are traditionally served on New Year’s Day, but be sure to keep their length intact, or else it is said you will ‘cut’ your fortune for the year.

• When traditionally giving money to friends and relatives for the Chinese New Year, be sure to enclose it in a red envelope for protection and give in even numbers of tens or hundreds – odd numbers should only be used for funerals. The number four (4) should be avoided, as it is associated with death, while the number eight (8) is considered lucky.

• A number of plants are often used to gather good fortune on the New Year, such as Bamboo, Kumquat, and Narcissus, whose presence is said to generate wealth and prosperity.

• Many Chinese will keep their lights on the night before New Years and even prop doors and windows open so as to allow the good luck of the year to enter into their homes and offices.

• Most Chinese people will not cut or wash their hair around the New Year to avoid ‘cutting’ or ‘washing’ their fortune away.

• Gong Yi Fa Cai 恭喜發財 does not mean “Happy New Year” – instead, it translates as “Congratulations and Be Prosperous!”

David Mainenti, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M. (NCCAOM), President of Eco-Med, LLC, is a Board-Certified Acupuncturist, Chinese Herbalist, and Oriental Medicine practitioner who combines over 15 years’ experience in international business and integrative health. Mr. Mainenti is a scholar of Taoist philosophy and a highly-trained practitioner in classical Chinese medical arts including acupuncture, acupressure, herbal medicine, aromatherapy, nutritional analysis, reflexology, massage, bodywork, Qi Gong 氣功, meditation, Feng Shui, Yi Jing, palmistry, and medical astrology. David holds a BS from Villanova University, cum laude, and an MS from Tai Hsuan College in Honolulu, Hawai`i, with honors. David currently teaches Feng Shui at both the Long Island University and the Eastern School of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine.
