Many have said that experience is the best teacher. Perhaps that’s why students who attend Clemson University not only seek superior academics, they look for broader opportunities--hands-on learning, a stronger sense of family and community, and a pow-erful connection to the world around them. The best of both worlds, Clemson is redefin-ing the term “top-tier research university” by combining the scientific and technological horsepower of a major research university with the highly engaged academic and social environment of a private, liberal arts college. Described as the perfect blend of geography, camraderie and scholarship, Clemson is more than just a steppingstone to academic excellence. It’s the gateway to the rest of your life. The Clemson Experience is different for every student. There are countless op-portunities to participate in decades of tradition, perform community service and pursue challenging learning situations. Clemson is a vibrant, student-centered community that thrives on leadership, collaboration, public service, relevant research and a winning spirit -- in academics, athletics and life. Whatever your interests, Clemson goes beyond text-books and lectures to provide an environment where you can play, discover, innovate and apply what you’ve learned to leave a lasting impression on the rest of the world.

Clemson University offers countless opportunities for students, faculty and community members to participate in decades of tradition, improve qual-ity of life for their surrounding communities and pursue academic challenges. Ranked as the 22nd best national public university by U.S.News and World Re-port, Clemson is a vibrant student-centered community that thrives on leader-ship, collaboration and a winning spirit — in academics, athletics and life. To become one of the country’s top-tier research universities, Clemson University has combined the scientific and technological horsepower of a major research university with the academic and social environment of a small col-lege. The signs on the side of the highway as you enter Clemson say “Clemson: In Season Every Season.” From the point of view of most Clemson graduates, the seasons this slogan speaks of are football, basketball, baseball, etc. But a drive through town in the middle of spring, when the azaleas and dogwoods are in full bloom, or a walk through campus in October, when the trees are blazing in the brilliant colors of autumn, will leave little doubt that Clemson is indeed in season, every season. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and caressed by the shores of beautiful Lake Hartwell, Clemson is located in the northwest corner of South Carolina, two hours northeast of Atlanta, GA and two hours southwest of Charlotte, NC. The friendly residents of Clemson and the surrounding towns welcome visitors each year with a true dose of southern hospitality. With its college-town, lakefront setting against a backdrop of mountains and forests, Clemson is characterized by a strong sense of community, a commitment to service and a love of winning – in academics, in athletics and in life.

Since its inception in 1991, the Student-Athlete Enrichment Programs have pro-vided student-athletes a continued commitment to excellence. Our approach is to address the total student-athlete, and we are committed to coaching our student-athletes to suc-cess in the academic, personal growth, career, and community service arenas. As an original member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, we provide oppor-tunities and services to address the changing needs and skills of student-athletes during college and after graduation. This program was selected for the Division I-A Athletic Direc-tor’s Association “Program of Excellence” Award, a lifetime award recognizing CHAMP/Life Skills excellence. The Student-Athlete Enrichment Programs are housed in Vickery Hall, located in the center of campus. The $3-million structure is as impressive aesthetically as other ath-letic facilities. It recently underwent $300,000 in renovations to further assist our student-athletes in the classroom. But the importance of Vickery Hall to our student-athletes is not found in the structure itself, but in the many programs that the building houses. Vickery Hall opened in the fall of 1991 and was the first facility in the country constructed solely to provide academic support to student-athletes. The two-story, 27,000 square-foot building is open all day and into the evening hours to accommodate the stu-dent-athletes’ extended schedules. Our programs are dedicated to provide a holistic, educational experience by inspir-ing an environment of respect, integrity, and excellence. Through these services, Vickery guides and encourages each individual to reach his or her full potential as a student, athlete, and citizen.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Clemson University has one of the finest weight rooms in the country. In 2004, the weight room was drastically remodeled, receiving a more modern and updated look as well as a more functional layout. Some of the new and updated features of the weight room include a state-of-the-art sound system, eight flat-screen plasma televisions, state-of-the-art ventilation system, new lighting system, 10 new multi-functional Clemson power racks, Mondo rubber flooring throughout entire weight room, new orange upholstery on all equipment, new paint on surrounding walls and columns, carpeting in entrances and offices and a reconstruction of the entryway walls. The nearly 15,000 square foot facility boasts over 12 tons of weight equipment and lines of Nautilus and Hammer Strength machines. The vast amount of equipment allows the weight room to be used by a number of teams simultaneously. The plush atmosphere provides an interesting contrast to the physical exertion that takes place in the facility. The Tiger Strength and Conditioning program is on the cutting edge of athletic sports enhancement. The multiple training methodologies utilized by the Clemson strength staff ensures that each athlete gets the maximum benefit from resistance training, speed development, nutritional consultation, and sports specific conditioning.

ATHLETIC TRAINING Clemson student-athletes in all sports now have the luxury of one of the top athletic training facilities in the nation. In the fall of 2000, the facility completed a $750,000 renovation and was renamed the Hoover Training Facility. The spacious facility features the latest in athletic training needs. There are offices for the employees and new taping tables, the latest in rehabilitation facilities, including stationary bikes, elliptical machines and an underwater treadmill, and a large hydro-therapy area. The Hoover Athletic  Training Facility is state-of-the-art in every aspect. It includes offices for staff and physicians, an orthopedic examination room, a conference room, and library. Best of all, the facility has plenty of space for all athletic training needs.

Clemson University athletics is dedicated to creating and main-taining a positive image for the university within the surrounding communi-ties through a commitment to service. By enabling student-athletes to iden-tify and share their time, talents, and abilities, Clemson’s student-athletes demonstrate a commitment to the community, and also grow as engaged citizens. Headed by Linda White, the Community Relations among student-athletes has reached new highs. In the 2009-10 academic year, Clemson’s student-athletes completed a total of 5,180 hours of service, or an average of almost 11.5 hours per athlete. That’s the equivalent of 3,453 soccer matches, 7,770 basketball games, and more than 5,000 volleyball matches! Clemson’s commitment to service reaches across several initiatives for players and coaches, including Shop With A Coach, Relay for Life, Be A T.I.G.E.R. Field Day, trips to various shelters and elementary schools, as well as hundreds of other initiatives from churches to the Special Olympics. Perhaps the most unique part of Clemson’s efforts is the Be a T.I.G.E.R. program. Clemson continues to be the only Division-I athletics program that uses a comprehensive character education initiative in its outreach activi-ties. As a member of an athletic program at Clemson, student-athletes and coaches can expect to have countless opportunities to enrich the lives of the surrounding community, a crucial part of student-athlete development.

2009 SEASON REVIEW

RuckAchievesAll-ACC,All-RegionStatus The top performer for Tiger cross country during the 2009 season was sophomore Kim Ruck. After surprising nearly everyone in the fall of 2008 with her success after walking on to the team after high school, she continued to improved by leaps and bounds in her second full season with the squad. Ruck made her season debut at the Mountaineer Open in Boone, NC on Sept. 18. She finished second in the event, leading the Tigers to a runner-up team finish. She then moved up and won the individual championship at the Charlotte Invitational two weeks later. It was the first-ever victory for Ruck, who hails from Greer, SC. Ruck had a career-best 6K time at the ACC Championships. She was ninth in the individual race with a time of 20:26.1, a personal best. Ruck fell just shy of an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, but she did earn all-region status by virtue of her 11th-place showing at the Southeast Region Championships in Louisville, KY.

ArmstrongEmergesasTeam’sTopNewcomer Following an outstanding year as a harrier for the Clemson club team, Kelsey Armstrong moved up to the varsity level in the fall of 2009. The results were impressive, as she was consistently the team’s No. 1 or No. 2 finisher in each meet she competed. The Talbott, TN native started her collegiate career off with a bang, winning the 5K Gamecock Invitational at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC on Sept. 4. She was subsequently named ACC Performer-of-the-Week after posting a winning time of 17:51.03. Armstrong finished third and fifth at the Mountaineer Open and Charlotte Invitational, respectively. She had a personal best over the 5K Charlotte course with a time of 17:32.5. She missed the ACC and Southeast Regionals due to injury.

InjuriesLimitedClemson’sDepth Although Clemson made improvements in 2009, injuries kept some of both squads’ top performers on the shelf for much of the season. The biggest injury was to Jenna Baker on the women’s team. She missed the entire season recovering from a stress fracture. Kelsey Armstrong injured her groin and also missed the league and regional meets. On the men’s team, Will Noble did not compete in a meet during the 2009 season. He was sidelined with an injured leg. Bryce Iverson (hip) struggled in his return at the ACC Championships, his only competition of the 2009 cross country season. Iverson was a former All-ACC and All-Region performer.

Sunde,SlateConsistentonMen’sSide The two most consistent performers last season for the men’s squad were Chris Slate and Jonathan Sunde, both juniors in the fall of 2009. Both finished among Clemson’s top three individuals in each meet during the 2009 campaign. Sunde possessed the Tigers’ top time in the 8K, having run 25:23.3 at the Charlotte Invitational on Oct. 2. Slate was the team’s No. 1 performer at both meets in Boone, NC, the Mountaineer Open and Blue Ridge Open. Slate was Clemson’s top runner on the men’s side at the ACC Championships, posting an 8K time of 24:51.3 for a 38th-place finish. Sunde was close behind in 25:19.6 and 56th place. The two were also the Tigers’ 1-2 finishers at the Southeast Regionals in November.

Regionally-RankedTigers Following an outstanding showing at the Oct. 2 Charlotte Invitational, both the men’s and women’s teams were ranked in the following week’s Southeast Region poll. The rankings are determined by a representative from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The women ranked No. 12, despite competing without one of their top harriers in junior Jenna Baker. The men were ranked No. 15 for back-to-back weeks, before falling out of the list for the Oct. 19 poll. Both teams finished the season among the top-15 teams in the Southeast Region. The women were No. 12 at the meet in Louisville, KY, while the men brought home a 15th-place finish.

Men/WomenRunner-UpinColumbia,Charlotte While Clemson did not earn a team title during the 2009 cross country season, the Tiger teams did collect several runner-up finishes. At two meets in particular, the Gamecock Invitational and Charlotte Invitational, both squads were runner-up on the same day. Kelsey Armstrong was individual champion at the Gamecock meet on Sept. 4 in Columbia, SC. Then, at the Charlotte meet a month later, Kim Ruck took the top individual honor. In both cases, the women’s team was runner-up. Jonathan Sunde was runner-up individually at the Gamecock Invitational, while Chris Slate was fifth. At the Charlotte meet, Sunde was 12th and two other Tigers, Chad Holt (16th) and Slate (19th), finished in the top 20 among individuals.

ThreeTigersNamedtoAll-ACCAcademicTeam Following the 2009 season, three members of the two cross country teams from Clemson were selected to the All-ACC Academic Team. Kim Ruck led the way as a second-time selection to the squad, and she was joined by freshman Lauren Reen as well. From the men’s team, Jonathan Sunde also earned his second career All-ACC Academic nod. Ruck went on to earn All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as well.
