KINNEY NATATORIUM

Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swim-ming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. Th e pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur.

Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a pool-side classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands.

Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Champi-onship. Th e facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of four Patriot League Swimming and Diving Cham-pionships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the spring of 2010 Bucknell is scheduled to play eight games inside the gorgeous facility.

Th e term “student-athlete” signifi es some-thing extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar fi rst and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in uphold-ing the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a chal-lenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics.

Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In do-ing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsSetting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fi elds. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s • four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions report-ing federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identi-cal to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of • the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in • 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competi-tion season. Among all BU student-athletes, 238 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the • spring of 2009.

In addition to the 118 • ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 281 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.

With three more Patriot League championships in 2008-09, Bucknell has • now earned 73 crowns in 19 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 100 conference players of the year, 83 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 476 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & fi eld, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the • league’s all-sports champion, 15 times in the 19-year history of the affi liation, including 11 of the last 12 years. Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s outdoor track & fi eld, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State • and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence • is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the fi nest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Aca-demic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offi ces for coaches and staff , and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facil-ity’s layout.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsA National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal

Bucknell Athletics is fi rst and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their fi rst priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residen-tial learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which aff ords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff , including prac-tice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfi tted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and eff orts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identifi cation of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may aff ect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Last year’s Bucknell squad had four team members tally at least 87 points and fi nish the season among the top 15 scorers in program history. While the Bison do return fi ve of their top six off ensive players from last year, third-year head coach John Abdou surprisingly hopes a repeat of that does not occur. Instead, the California native hopes to see a much more balanced Bucknell off ensvie attack in 2010.

“More so than any other year our emphasis on team play will be pro-nounced this year,” mentioned Abdou during the preseason. “In our losses in recent years we have had people score multiple goals, but we want to get back to seven, eight diff erent people scoring goals in the box score. Th at’s when we have been successful.”

In addition to having a more balanced off ensive attack, Abdou hopes the Bison can avoid the late-season swoon they encountered during last year’s postseason. Bucknell posted an eight-game winning streak to stretch its re-cord to 18-11 heading into the fi nal regular-season contest againt nation-ally ranked Indiana. Th e Bison lost a 7-4 decision to the Hoosiers and then proceeded to drop two overtime games at the Southern Championships and all three outings at the Eastern Championship to conclude the campaign on a six-game losing streak and fi nish 18-17. To combat that problem this year, Abdou has scheduled just four games in the month leading up to the South-ern Championships, with none of them being on the same day. Additionally, Bucknell will play just fi ve games on its Spring Break trip to California, rather than the eight it played last spring.

While Abdou has tailored the schedule a bit, it is as diffi cult as ever. Five teams ranked in the preseason top 20 show up on the schedule, while league foes Maryland and Princeton were also receiving votes. Th e strong schedule is nothing new for this group of Bison, who have faced 21 ranked foes over the last two years.

With a group of three seniors and three juniors who have all been contribu-tors since day one, Abdou has high expectations for his squad this year.

“When I look at this team, I am looking at an experienced group,” said Abdou, who will see six starters return from a team that tied Maryland for fi rst in the conference during the regular season the last two years. “Th ere is really nothing they haven’t been through over the last few years. Our juniors and seniors will be leading the way in terms of continuing to build this program.

“Th e production of our senior class is vital to our success this year. Both (Shana) Palencia and (Alison) Carter are coming off injuries and if they remain healthy and (Valentina) Rozas performs up to the level she has the last few years, all three of them are among the best at their positions in the confer-ence.”

While all three seniors have been impressive over the years, none has been showered with more honors than Rozas, the fi rst two-time Honorable Men-tion All-American in program history. A team co-captain along with Palencia, Rozas ranks in the top 10 in Bucknell’s record books in six diff erent career categories, including ejections drawn (2nd, 231), shots (3rd, 456), goals (4th, 190), points (6th, 255) and steals (7th, 151).

Last year the explosive off ensive performer who has been named First Team All-CWPA Southern Division each of the last two years, piled up career highs in goals (73), assists (24) and points (97). Her goal total ranked second on the team and is also second on the program’s single-season list.

“I think Val will continue doing what she always has done,” predicted Ab-dou. “She has been great for us the last three years and that should not change in 2010.”

Palencia had a breakout year as a sophomore in 2008 with 42 goals and 24 assists and she followed that up with an even better 2009 (49g, 38a), when she fi nished fourth on the team with a career-high 87 points. She now ranks eighth on the career assists list with 80 and is seventh in career sprints won (38).

A strong defensive player who is a fast swimmer, Palencia was fi fth on the team with 38 steals a year ago and now has 134 in her career, just six shy of 10th place on that ledger.

“Shana has improved every year and I think this is going to be her best year,” said Abdou. “She had to battle that injury last year and I am looking forward to seeing her produce a lot her senior year. She does so much for us. She is one of our best all-around

players.”Carter is a two-year starter in

goal who has appeared in 66 games over her fi rst three years. She ranks third on the program’s career saves list with 460, including 176 last year. A veteran of more than 1,600 min-utes in cage, Carter owns a career save percentage of .515 and was an all-conference selection as a sopho-more.

“Alison has been working hard now for three years,” praised Abdou, who also has sophomore Brittany Connell (36 saves in 2009) to turn to in goal. “She’s primed to have a great season. She will be the leader and backbone of our defense on what should be a very good defen-sive team.”

While the Bison seniors will be counted on to serve as team leaders, the junior class of Kandis Canonica, Haley Prickett and Meghan McNally has provided plenty of fi repower in recent years.

Canonica is just halfway through her career, but with another season like last year when she fi nished second on the team with a career-high 123 points, she will tie Aubrey Rowe’s program points record (358). She is already tied for third on the career assists list with 125 and will certainly break the eight-year-old record of 142 before the season is half over. Canonica also owns the top two spots on the single-season ledger with 61 and 64 helpers in her fi rst two years.

“I really want to emphasize teamwork and what Kandis can do for that teamwork,” explained Abdou about his left-hander. “I once again see Kandis as someone who will take care of the ball for us and lead our power play and frontcourt off ense.”

Like Palencia, Prickett battled shoulder issues throughout the 2009 cam-paign. After tallying 44 goals as a freshman, she registered half that total last year. However, she was still very productive, nearly doubling her assist total from 17 to 33. She is one of four returnees to enter 2010 with more than 100 career points (116). Additionally, her 57 steals were third on the team.

“Haley played well despite limitations due to injuries,” said Abdou. “She still had a good season and hopefully coming off shoulder surgery she will be ready to contribute at a high level once again.”

McNally is the lone junior or senior who was not a regular starter last spring, but that does not mean she does not bring experience to the pool. Th e Floral Park, N.Y., native appeared in 35 games and made fi ve starts a year ago, leading a bench that saw fi ve members see action in at least 30 games. McNally has netted nine goals, dished out 10 assists and accumulated 13 steals in her career.

“Meghan has to really step up this year,” mentioned Abdou. “She improved dramatically from her freshman year to her sophomore year and now as a junior I look at her as someone who will step up.”

Bucknell’s fi nal returning starter from last year is sophomore Amanda Skonezney. Th e Mechanicsburg, Pa., native is the Bison’s fastest swimmer, and she showed it by winning 77 sprints, the second-best single-season total in program history. She added 27 goals and 13 assists and Abdou expects her role to expand as she continues to gain more experience.

Hallie Kennan is another sophomore who gained experience last year, ap-pearing in all 35 games, mainly off the bench. Th e left-hander scored 13 goals and dished out 15 assists.

Sophomore Becca Shopiro also made an impact as a freshman, giving the Bison one of their deepest benches in recent memory. She tallied one goal, fi ve assists and 13 steals while appearing in 30 games.

Fellow sophomores Ariel Frankeny and Christina Wagner will try to add to the Bucknell depth in 2010. Wagner saw action in three games last year, while Frankeny and Varela did not appear in a contest as rookies.

Shannon Carroll, Krystle Morgan, Tara Murao and Erica White comprise the freshman class and Abdou expects them to contribute right away, despite the experienced players ahead of them.

“A key to our success is the freshman class acclimating quickly to our sys-tem,” commented Abdou. “All four of them bring talent and skill to their positions. I am really looking forward to what they can do. Th ey all have great work ethics and come from good water polo backgrounds.”

BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY RECEIVES MAJOR

DONATION FROM DAM AND CHRIS RICHARDS TO BOLSTER WOMEN’S AND MEN’S WATER POLO

PROGRAMS

Th e men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell University will be greatly bolstered thanks to a $1.5 million commitment made by Dan ’78 and Chris (Peterjohn ’76) Richards in the summer of 2009. Th e pledge was made in honor of Coach Dick Russell, who was at the helm of the swimming and diving programs from 1968 to 1994 and created the water polo program at Bucknell, coaching the men’s team from its inception as a varsity sport in 1977 until 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Richards were swimmers under Coach Russell during their years at Bucknell.

As the Richards’ multi-year pledge is paid, an endowment will be built that generates funds to enhance Bucknell’s men’s and women’s varsity water polo programs by increasing and stabilizing the resources available for the coaches, staff and student-athletes. Th e Russell Endowment will provide a lasting memo-rial honoring the lifetime contributions of the late Hall of Fame mentor to Buck-nell’s varsity water polo and swimming and diving programs. It will complement a similar endowment established for the swimming and diving programs in 2002 by William D. Dearstyne ’62 to honor former coach and director of athletics Bob Latour, and further underscores the successful tradition of the varsity aquatics programs at Bucknell.

“Bucknell is grateful to Dan and Chris Richards for setting an outstanding example of alumni loyalty and leadership as we enter the third year of our com-prehensive campaign,” said President Brian C. Mitchell. “Th eir generosity honors Coach Russell’s important legacy, and will help future generations of student-athletes to enjoy the same great experience that they did.”

“We are extremely pleased to accept the Richards’ generous commitment, and I would like to publicly thank Dan and Chris for a gift that will directly impact the student-athlete experience for current and future Bucknellians,” said John P. Hardt, director of athletics and recreation. “To me, the most rewarding aspect of this gift is that it comes from two former Bison student-athletes who enjoyed such a positive experience at Bucknell that they felt compelled to give back as alumni. Th eir leadership and fi nancial support can serve as a model for all of our sports programs here at Bucknell, as well as for other institutions around the country.”

“Th is is a tremendous act of generosity that will help our programs move in the right direction,” said John Abdou, Bucknell’s current head men’s and women’s water polo coach. “It is my hope that Dan and Chris’ gift will inspire others to step forward and support the program in a similar fashion. I can’t think of a better way to pay tribute to Coach Russell - he was truly the pioneer of water polo on the East Coast. I am sure many of his former players and colleagues will be extremely touched by the Richards’ gift.”

“We are very happy that we can provide the water polo program with some much-needed support, while at the same time paying tribute to Coach Russell,” said Dan Richards. “He played an important role in so many of our lives, and Chris and I are thankful that we have the ability to make this gift in his memory.”

MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGEDan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards have created a matching chal-

lenge program for friends, fans and alumni of Bucknell water polo and swim-ming and diving to help increase long-term support for these varsity sports and honor former Bison coach Dick Russell.

Up to a limit of $250,000, the Richards will accelerate payment of their multi-year $1.5 million pledge to the new “Russell Endowment” by matching qualifying gifts and pledges made by others, as follows:

1. Qualifying gifts and pledges made by individual donors, of...2. at least $5,000 to an endowment fund named to honor Coach Dick Russell in support of the water polo and/or swimming and diving programs,3. paid on or before June 30, 2012, plus...4. corporate matching gifts resulting from qualifi ed gifts and payments made by individual donors...5. ...will be matched by accelerated pledge payments from Dan and Chris Richards into the Russell Endowment no later than Dec. 31 of the second year following the year in which the qualifi ed gift or payment is received• Contact Todd Newcomb (570-577-1771; [email protected]) with questions

John Abdou, who previously served in the role of interim head coach for fi ve months, was named the head men’s and women’s water polo coach at Bucknell in June 2008. Abdou, a 2001 graduate of the University of Califor-nia at Irvine, is in his fi fth year as a member of the Bison men’s and women’s water polo coaching staff s, serving as an assistant coach, associate head coach, interim head coach and now head coach over that span.

Abdou, the 2008 and 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Women’s Coach of the Year, performed admirably in his stint as in-terim head coach when he led the squad to a program-record 26 victories and a sixth-place showing at the Eastern Championship. Bucknell was nationally ranked for six weeks during the season, climbing as high as No. 19 in the polls, the best ranking in the then decade-long existence of the program. He followed that up with an 18-17 record last spring, marking the fourth above-.500 fi nish in the last fi ve years for the program.

Since arriving at Bucknell in the summer of 2005, Abdou has helped the Bison women’s team post a pair of 20-win campaigns and accumulate an overall record of 82-53.

On the men’s side, Abdou led the Bison men to their third consecutive .500 fi nish in his fi rst year as frontman in 2008. Bucknell faced 17 nation-ally ranked teams and spent four weeks in the rankings, climbing as high as No. 18. Th is past fall, his second at the helm, featured a 17-14 record and a third-place fi nish at the Eastern Championship, the program’s best showing since 1993.

In Abdou’s fi nal campaign as an associate head coach (2007), the Bison posted a 20-13 record. It was Bucknell’s fi rst 20-win season since 2001. Th e Bison fi nished the year ranked 19th nationally, marking the second time in Abdou’s fi rst three years on the pool deck as an assistant that it was ranked at the conclusion of a season. Additionally, the men’s program has fi nished in the top fi ve at the Eastern Championships all fi ve years Abdou has been associated with the program.

As an assistant coach, Abdou served as the primary West Coast recruiter for both the men’s and women’s programs and has brought a wealth of talent to Lewisburg. Over the last four years, Abdou has helped the Bison men’s team ink 10 players from his home state, including current freshman Brett Th ompson. Eleven California natives dotted the 2009 women’s roster, while three more Californians are part of the women’s Class of 2013.

Prior to his stint at Bucknell, Abdou served as the director and head coach of both the men’s and women’s water polo programs at Burbank High School in Burbank, Calif., from 2001-2005. Th e area’s Girls Water Polo Coach of the Year winner in 2004 and 2005, Abdou took a pair of teams with losing records and transformed them into perennial winners, participating in the league playoff s each of the last three years.

Along with handling the coaching duties at Burbank, Abdou was a social science teacher. He was voted one of Los Angeles’ Most Inspirational Teach-ers in 2005 and was chosen to pioneer the school’s fi rst advanced placement

Under Rave’s tutelage, UC Santa Barbara had three all-conference selections in the diffi cult Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation in 2008.

As an assistant coach with UC Santa Barbara, Rave helped the men’s con-tingent to its fi rst 20-win season since 1990 in his fi rst year on staff . Th e 2001 graduate of UCSB focused much of his eff orts on goalie instruction and saw the men’s team fi nish the campaign No. 6 in the nation twice during his tenure.

Rave was a member of the Gauchos men’s water polo team from 1997-2000. During his senior season he not only served as the team captain, he was also named Most Valuable Player and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Men’s College Water Polo Athlete of the Year. spent extensive time on the pool deck as a coach for the Santa Barbara Water Polo Foundation. As the co-head coach for the 18-and-under boys team, Rave helped lead his team to a gold medal at the 2006 National Junior Olympics. Th e strength & conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Fam-ily Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the fi rst full-time strength & conditioning coordinator.

A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in move-ment studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs.

Th e general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round pe-riodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specifi c training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics.

Th e ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the preven-tion of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition.

A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Coun-cil of Strength and Fitness.

Th e leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic sched-uling for the 15 member teams. Offi ciating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo

Referees Association (EWPRA). Th e next major milepost occurred in

1993, when the Southern and New Eng-land Conferences merged into the Mid At-lantic. Th e new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that

time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its fi rst major challenge,

as the organization experienced a strike by its offi ciating core. Th is strike ul-timately resulted in the organization establishing its own offi ciating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its offi ciating assignments. Th e conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Offi cials and Loren Bertocci as its fi rst Technical Director. Th ese two individuals laid the groundwork for the Offi ciating Bureau that exists today.

Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and infl uence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

Bucknell is a member of the CWPA Southern Division along with George Washington, Maryland and Princeton.

BUCKNELL ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

Th e Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

Th e Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their fi rst priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. Th e coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priori-

ties and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department pro-motes the personal growth of stu-dent-athletes and the general stu-dent body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportu-nities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creat-ing shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff , as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s

programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

Th e Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the high-est extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracur-ricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, refl ects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. Th e Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

Th e department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where more than 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the Univer-sity has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a diff erence and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed Th e Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.”

Th e Plan comprises fi ve strategies.

Strengthen the Academic Coreaims to ensure that a Bucknell educa-tion is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;

Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility;

Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world;

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, interna-tional focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activi-ties as well as opportunities for off -campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our fi nancial future.

Th e Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
