Boston College had another winning season in 2009 with a 13-7 overall record and an NCAA tournament appearance, the program’s first since 2005. The team finished fifth in the ACC and ninth overall. The team’s 70 goals in one season was enough to place the squad on the Boston College Record Books as second for Most Goals in a Season.

Chelsey Feole had her biggest year yet for the Eagles. With 24 goals in the regular season and two in the off-season, she edged out Sabrina Lazzari ‘05 for most goals in a season. With 56 career goals, she came in second behind Bob Dirks. Feole also got her name in the record books with first for Points in a Season (64) and second for Points in a Career (134). The 2009 co-captain was recognized on the First Team All-America and was an All-ACC team selection, NFHCA Northeast Regional Player of the Year, and an All-ACC Academic team selection.

Last season’s other co-captain Emily Kozniuk also put herself in the record books with an impressive season. She tied for third for Assists in a Season (15) and tied for sixth for Assists in a Career (23). Her season 15 assists was the 12th most in the nation. She was recognized to the NFHCA First-Team All Northeast Regional and was a Third-Team All-American.

Lamb’s 2009 squad was especially strong in non-conference play, defeating all but one opponent. They had a six game winning streak to open the season that was only ended by the first-ranked Maryland Terrapins, who went on to become ACC Champs and NCAA runners-up. The Eagles defeated ACC opponent Duke at home 3-2, as well as 19th-ranked Providence 4-2 and fifth-ranked Syracuse 1-0. In a tough overtime match, they defeated 11th-ranked UMass 2-1 on the road. They also delivered crushing blows to William & Mary (7-2) and Harvard (9-1).

With a total of five players named to the NFHCA All-Regional Teams, five selected as NFHCA All-Americans, and five on the All-ACC Academic squad as well as the National Academic team, the Eagles’ strength and depth of talent did not go unnoticed.

“the Syracuse game this past year is one of my favorite memo-ries here at Bc. that game we truly played as a team, as one unit, and to see it pay off in the end was indescrib-able. every single one of us dug down deep and gave everything we had for 70 min-utes, and to win as the underdog made it that much better.” —Jess Roberts, ’11

Boston College will begin the 2010 season, its sixth in the ACC, with a strong set of veteran leaders to pave the way for the large incoming class of fresh talent. Last season saw the Eagles’ first NCAA tournament appearance since 2005, and although the team ultimately lost to Syracuse, the squad’s strength assures it will not be another five years until they see the postseason again.

The Eagles had an impressive 13-7 2009 season with ACC and NCAA tournament berths under head coach Ainslee Lamb’s fifth season with Boston College. Thirteen letter winners, eight of whom are starters, return to this season’s squad with that experience to guide them to another successful season. Although several seniors graduated, the incoming class of six freshmen and two graduate students is poised to fill the big shoes left behind.

Both the players and the coaching staff kept busy in the off-season, preparing for another tough season in the perennially strong ACC. Senior midfield Emily Kozniuk, who was named the 2010 Captain at the end of last season, played with incoming freshman Paige Norris on British Columbia’s National team, which won this summer’s National Championship. The Junior National Camp, held this July at the University of Maryland, invited returning junior Catherine O’Brien and freshmen Nicole Schuster and Chapin Duke to play. In addition, Lamb was the U-21 National Team head coach and ran the combine. Clements coached the U-19 team at camp. Schuster made the US U-19 team this summer.

With capable players and an experienced coaching staff to guide them, the 2010 BC field hockey team should have no trouble once again proving they are a team to reckon with in and out of the ACC.

ATTACkReturning to the front line is senior Janna Anctil, who had a successful 2009 season that saw her finish second on the team in goals (11), assists (13), and points (35). In addition, senior Marlotte van den Bergh, junior Courtney Tavener, and sophomore Taylor Turchi will be additional factors for the Eagles offense. Several newcomers will look to add their own experience to the veteran mix, including graduate student Tilly Brampton and the Class of 2014’s Nicole Schuster, Virgynia Muma, and Chapin Duke.

MIdFIELdBoston College’s midfield will once again be anchored by senior captain Emily Kozniuk, who returns from last season where she started in all 20 games and recorded six goals and 15 assists. Starter Jessica Roberts will work with Kozniuk to form an impenetrable midfield, and their combined experience should work well to form the backbone of the team. Catherine O’Brien will return to the midfield as well, in addition to newcomer Paige Norris.

dEFENSEFifth-year player Jenny Raftery will be the Eagles’

stronghold in the backfield this season. Her work during the 2009 season helped create a strong defense that only allowed an average of 2.28 goals per game. Junior Carla Tamer will return from last year’s season-ending knee injury in addition to sophomores Kara Mackintire and Jacqui Moorfield. Graduate student Friderike Hauschildt will join the ranks from her last stint at University of Hamburg in Germany, and freshmen Hannah

Mulvey and Eleni Andromidas will also see time at back.GOALkEEPERSLast season’s starter Kristine Stigas will once again take the goal for the Eagles in 2010. She had an outstanding year in 2009, registering 94 saves in 22 games, a number that placed her second on the Saves List for ACC stats. She had four shutouts, including a 1-0 win against the fifth-ranked Syracuse. Her backup will be junior Nicole Barry, who saw action in five games last season and had six saves overall.

THE SCHEdULEThe ACC always presents a challenging schedule but the Eagles will look to expand upon last season’s successes. Other tough matches include ranked teams Indiana, UMass, UConn, and Syracuse.

Boston College will begin the season with five consecutive road games, starting with UMass and Indiana. Their first home game will be against cross-town rival Boston University.

The first ACC matchup will be on the road at Maryland, the 2009 ACC defending champions. Boston College will host Virginia, North Carolina, and Wake Forest at the Newton Campus Field and travel to play Duke. The Eagles will be gunning for Wake Forest, who defeated the team in the first round of last season’s

Emilykozniuk

ACC tournament.

ACC TOURNAMENTThe squad will work this season to garner its first tournament win this November in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Boston College has lost to Wake Forest in the first round for the past two

2 0 1 0 F I E L d H O C k E YUnder Head Coach Ainslee Lamb’s guidance, the Eagles soared to their ninth consecutive winning season in 2009 with a 13-7 overall record and saw NCAA Tournament play for the first time since 2005. The team started strong with a six game winning streak, later beating 11th ranked UMass on the road in a tough 2-1 overtime battle. They also defeated fifth ranked Syracuse at home by a 1-0 margin. They outscored their opponents 70-46 and drew more penalty corners, 153-113. In December 2009, Lamb was honored as the Northeast Region Coach of the Year. Five players were named to the NFHCA All-Regional team, with two All-Americans. Senior Chelsey Feole was named to the All-ACC Team as well as the NFHCA All-Star squad. Five Eagles were named to the All-ACC Academic Squad as well as the National Academic Team.

Even in the off-season, Lamb is honing her skills as a coach and preparing for the upcoming season. This past summer she was Head Coach of the Boston Senior High Performance Team, as well as the 2010 Junior National Camp at the University of Maryland. It was invitation only and three BC players attended. Head coaching duties for the Junior National Under 21 Team also fell to Lamb, with Clements acting as a coach as well. Schuster also played for the U-19 team. Even with all her commitments, Lamb still found time to coach the Under 21 National Team as well. As a winning and experienced coach, Lamb was asked to speak at the 2010 National Coaches Forum. Her hard work and talent did not go unnoticed as she was recognized by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as 2010 Developmental Coach of the Year for USA Field Hockey.

Lamb had a very busy summer of 2009 as she was the Assistant Coach for the Under 21 U.S. National Field Hockey team that competed in the Junior World Cup. Boston College co-hosted the international event that featured some of the best field hockey teams from around the world. Lamb helped guide team USA to an eighth place finish in the tournament. Lamb was also the head coach for the New England High Performance team that competed in Virginia Beach this summer. The 2009 High Performance Team also featured current Boston College assistant coach Chris Clements, and four players on this year’s roster. She was named the Junior National Camp assistant coach this summer which helped prepare the U.S. team for the world cup.

In 2007, Boston College recorded its seventh consecutive winning season with a 12-8 record under Lamb. The Eagles compiled a five-game winning streak and outscored opponents 54-33 throughout the season. Two players earned All-America and All-ACC status, while four were named to the All-Northeast Regional team. Seven players were honored with All-ACC academic accolades and seven were named to the NFHCA Academic Squad. Lamb, who is heading into her fourth season at the helm for the Eagles, notched her 80th win in a 5-2 victory against New Hampshire on Oct. 21.

After the season, Lamb was invited to an inaugural program to earn the USA Field Hockey’s Level III coaching accreditation, which

is the highest coaching level that can be obtained. To add to her accomplishments, Lamb was also named

an assistant coach for the United States Under-19 team. During the summer Lamb coached the New England

High Performance Team to a National Championship at the 2008 USA Field Hockey High Performance Training Center National Championship Tournament.

Lamb led the team to a 14-6 overall record in 2006. Under her guidance, the program reached its highest rank ever in the NFHCA poll, placing fourth on October 3 after defeating Duke in double overtime. After the strong 2006 campaign, Lamb coached the New England Team in the 2007 USA Field Hockey’s High Performance Training Center National Championship Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va.

In February 2005, Lamb became the seventh head field hockey coach in Boston College history. She took over a program that was heading into its inaugural year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the home of seven of the last 10 national champions. Lamb racked up many accomplishments in her first year at the Heights. The Eagles won 10 or more games for the 11th time in the last 12 years and finished the season by making their third-straight NCAA appearance. Lamb’s 2005 team finished with one All-American, two All-ACC selections and four members of the Dartfish/NFCHA Division I All-Northeast Team.

During her five-year stint at Yale, from 1999 to 2003, Lamb’s teams compiled a 41-47 record won back-to-back ECAC championships in 2002 and 2003. Prior to her being named head coach, Lamb served as an assistant under Marisa Didio for three years. Lamb’s coaching career began in 1994, when she became a graduate assistant coach at University of Massachusetts.

Lamb is a 1994 graduate of the University of Toronto and earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1996. She was a standout player at both Toronto and UMass, where she was an NCAA Tournament All-Star when the Minutewomen reached the NCAA Final Four in 1992. She and her husband Joel, Harvard football’s offensive co-coordinator, have a daughter, Brooklyn.

In 2005 the Boston College field hockey team made its new home at the state-of-the-art AstroTurf field located on the Newton Campus. Adjacent to the Newton Campus Soccer Field, the Field Hockey Complex features an irrigated, non-filled nylon turf surrounded by fencing and a retaining wall. The complex includes a 750-seat bleacher, an elevated scorer’s table area and a sports lighting system for evening play. In preparation for the 2007 fall season, wireless internet and a closed-in press box were added to the facility over the summer.

Construction began on April 19, 2005 and was completed in mid-August of the same year. The Eagles christened the field with a 3-2 win over Kent State on Sept. 4, 2005.

The field hosts all Boston College field hockey home games and also serves as the team’s practice facility.

Over the last four seasons, the Eagles have had much success at the Newton Campus Field, going 37-19. Nine wins against ranked opponents have come in Newton.

With the field’s close proximity to the dormitories, the “Superfans,” BC’s collective student fan base, frequent games to provide a boisterous and exciting atmosphere. Decked in bright gold t-shirts, Superfans, friends, and family sit right near the action in the bleachers or on the lawn shaded with trees surrounding the field.

Last season the Eagles got two of their biggest home wins in the history of Newton Field beating the 13th ranked ACC rival Duke 3-2 on October 3 and fifth ranked Syracuse Orange 1-0 on October 25.

In 2007, the Eagles hosted the ACC Field Hockey Championships. Newton Campus Field became the first site of an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament hosted by Boston College. The Eagles lost an overtime battle to Virginia, 3-2, in the quarterfinals. Almost 1,500 fans attended the five-game tournament, including the 500 who watched the championship game as North Carolina defeated Wake Forest, 4-3, in overtime.

William P. Leahy, S.J. became the 25th president of Boston College on July 31, 1996. Born in Omaha, he grew up on his family’s farm near Imogene, Iowa. After one year of college at Creighton University, he entered the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus in 1967. He received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in United States history from Saint Louis University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. Between 1975 and 1979, he studied theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, earning a master’s degree in divinity and a master’s degree in sacred theology while there. Ordained a priest in 1978, he completed doctoral studies in United States history at Stanford University in 1985.

Father Leahy joined the department of history at Marquette University in 1985 and became a tenured associate professor there six years later. In July 1991, he was named executive vice president at Marquette, where he served until being named president of Boston College in 1996.

During his years at Boston College, Father Leahy has presided over an institution that has solidified its position among the nation’s best and most selective national universities. Since 1996, BC’s endowment, sponsored research grants and student financial aid have doubled, and the percentage of student applicants accepted has fallen from 41 percent to 27 percent, while SAT scores have risen by more than 130 points. In addition, 100 full-time faculty members have been added,

minority student enrollment in undergraduate programs has climbed from 18 percent to 26 percent and annual cash gifts to the University have increased from $24 million to $95 million.

During his presidency, undergraduate applications to Boston College have grown from 16,500 to 30,000, making BC the fifth most- applied to private university in the United States. Currently, the University enrolls students from all 50 states and 80 countries, and its undergraduates have earned more than 250 prestigious fellowships, including two Rhodes Scholarships. Student-athletes at BC succeed in balancing the demands of academics and athletics, and BC consistently ranks among those universities with the highest NCAA graduation rates.

Most recently, the Boston College community has been engaged in a comprehensive assessment and planning effort that resulted in a 10-year Strategic Plan. This plan will build on Boston College’s strengths and accomplishments of the past and will focus additional resources on undergraduate liberal arts education and formation, as well as integrated science research and teaching. The University also intends to increasingly apply the strengths of its professional schools to resolving critical societal issues, and foster even more international links. In addition, Boston College intends to remain faithful to its Jesuit, Catholic heritage and to become the leading Catholic university and theological center in the world.

BOSTONCOLLEGE

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston’s Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded in the city of Boston. Today, it is one of the foremost universities in the nation, with a coeducational enrollment of 14,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Boston College has drawn students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries.

Boston College has grown not just in size, but also in stature and diversity. Today, it is ranked among the top 34 national universities by US News & World Report. Its Graduate School of Social Work is listed among the nation’s top 15, also by US News, while the graduate programs of its Lynch School of Education are among the top 20 and its Connell School of Nursing and Law School are among the top 30. In addition, eight undergraduate programs of the Carroll School of Management placed among the top 10 in the nation according to BusinessWeek, with accounting placing first in its category. Boston College is among the nation’s most selective universities, with nearly 30,000 applications received for its 2,250-member Class of 2013, and is numbered among the top American private research universities.

After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others.

“Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transforming experience for young men and women.”

A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual,

is the faculty’s dedication to teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report.

A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual development, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. Students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help others in need, whether in Boston or Belize. Each year, more than 5,000 undergraduates give some 375,000 hours of community service in the Boston area, while more than 650 students trade vacation for service during Spring Break. Nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually.

Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 31 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest graduation rates in Division IA.

BC offers a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Center for Ignatian Spirituality; Center for Catholic Education; Church in the 21st Century Center; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center for Human Rights and International Justice; Center for Christian-Jewish Learning; Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Sloan Center on Aging and Work; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Educational Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships; Center for Corporate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs; Urban Ecology Institute and Weston Observatory.

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country. Last year, 379 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. DeFilippo initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards, new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facilities on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Stadium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months.

DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot

Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-

Athletes, and a large function area for general University use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports. DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contributed more than $27 million during the past year (this total includes an extraordinary payment towards a capital project). The 4,600 donors to the Flynn Fund prove that there is strength in numbers; nearly 700 alumni, parents and friends have given to BC Athletics for at least 10 consecutive years. Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2009-10 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 11th consecutive bowl game and the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed. From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of athletics at Villanova University. He served as Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Services at Vanderbilt University from 1983-84. His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference championships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters as a quarterback in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974. DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children – Christine Eldred (married to Matt Eldred), John and Mary.
