What a splash! Last fall, over 500 members, friends and dignitaries celebrated Save The Bay’s 50th Anniversary at San Francisco’s City View & Terrace at a festive gala.

“Splash - 50 Years of Making Waves” was a huge success, raising $303,000 for our ongoing work to protect and restore our iconic Bay. A special highlight was the presentation of a Lifetime Achieve-ment Award to Save The Bay co-founder, Sylvia McLaughlin, and posthumously to Catherine Kerr.

Save The Bay is charting a new course with our 2010-2011 Annual Report. It’s online, saving money so we can direct more of your generous contributions to fight pollution and protect our Bay. This Report highlights the year’s major achievements and acknowledges all of our supporters.

A great example is the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s (BCDC) unanimous adoption of new guidelines for development projects in low-lying shoreline areas where sea level is expected to rise. BCDC is the state agency we helped create 46 years ago to regulate activity in and near the Bay.

BCDC’s Bay Plan now discourages new development in these undeveloped open space areas, and encourages tidal wetland restoration instead. This bold action makes it the first state agency implementing California’s Climate Adaptation Strategy.

I hope you enjoy this year’s Annual Report. You have helped Save The Bay soar, as we continue to prevent destructive development, improve Bay water quality, re-establish tidal marshes, and engage and educate more and more people who love San Francisco Bay.

San Jose banned plastic bags. With this win in the Bay Area’s largest city, San Jose joins a growing list of communities working to reduce plastic bag pollution.

The Bay Area uses 3.8 billion plastic bags each year, but despite 15 years of recycling efforts, virtually none are actually recycled. Approximately 1 million plastic bags a year get into the Bay and spoil our waters, strangle our wildlife and smother our wetlands.

Save The Bay works with businesses and residents to reduce this highly visible pollution. Your support enabled us to achieve victories such as the San Jose ban and to encourage Bay Area residents to “bring your own bag.”

A postcard from San Jose – victory in the battle of the Bay vs. the Bag

Your generosity reaches far into the future. Your support of Save The Bay enables us to take thousands of kids under our wing and help them discover San Francisco Bay, the natural treasure that defines our region. Here’s what 9th grader Victor wrote:

“Thank you for my first community service experience. It was fun and I learned about saving the environment and about pollution in the Bay. Planting trees was so relaxing. I have never felt so close to nature. Thank you for letting me take part in saving the Bay and for teaching me so much about the environment. I hope I can participate again! Sincerely, Victor, 9th Grade”

During Save The Bay’s Educational programs, school children experience the Bay as an outdoor classroom and laboratory. They are inspired by the wonder of the Bay, especially when they see a sea lion for the first time or get their hands in the Bay mud. Your gifts help us plant a sense of responsibility in the next generation of Bay stewards.

Save The Bay’s grassroots campaign to stop agri-business giant Cargill from paving over Redwood City’s restorable salt ponds has mobilized over 20,000 people who oppose the development. The power of our combined voices forced Cargill to withdraw its original proposal. But now Cargill’s trying to have these salt ponds, which are the largest piece of restorable shoreline, declared exempt from the Clean Water Act and other key environmental laws. We must keep the pressure on to prevent Cargill from destroying this restorable open space. Please join the tens of thousands of Bay Area residents who oppose this flawed and misguided development scheme by adding your voice. Go to our online petition at www.DontPaveMyBay.org and help us win this crucial fight. Thank you again!

“The biggest part of our whole effort was to create awareness about the Bay and its connection to everyone around it. I just hope people continue to appreciate the treasure of the San Francisco Bay. We want this to be here for those who come after us and beyond.”

Sylvia McLaughlin – Save The Bay co-founder

Save The Bay is the largest regional organization working to protect, restore and celebrate San Francisco Bay. As its leading champion since 1961, Save The Bay protects the Bay from pol-lution and inappropriate shoreline development, making it cleaner and healthier for people and wildlife. We restore habitat and secure strong poli-cies to re-establish 100,000 acres of wetlands that are essential for a healthy Bay. We engage 40,000 supporters, ad-vocates and volunteers to protect the Bay, and inspire the next generation of environmental leaders by educat-ing thousands of students annually.
