On Tuesday, October 19, three local school districts will be joining together in an unprecedented public forum to share “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: A Taxpayer’s Guide to the Public School Funding Crisis.” GCISD School Board Trustees and Administrators will join leaders in the Carroll and Keller school districts to present a united message about school funding during a 45-minute presentation at 7 p.m. in the Carroll Senior High School auditorium, 1501 W. Southlake Blvd., Southlake.

The Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to adopt a resolution encouraging state lawmakers to “Make Education a Priority” in the next Legislative session. The resolution encourages state leaders to work with local school board trustees and community members to resolve the growing financial crisis facing school districts across the state. Nine GCISD high school students have been named semifinalists in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The three semifinalists from CHHS are: Gaurang Gupte, Nicholas Nguyen and Thomas Weidman.

The five semifinalists from GHS are: Elizabeth Janicki, Abishek Kulshreshtha, Allison Moy, Hillary Rosenjack, Matthew Smith and Clarissa Wedemeyer.

Bear Creek, Bransford and Glenhope elementary schools have been named to the Texas Business & Education Coalition Honor Roll for 2010. The TBEC Honor Roll recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard-commended-in every subject.

District Highlights

CHHS and GHS have been selected to participate in a statewide robotics grant program designed to increase students’ involvement in robotics and spark interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The grant, which totals $322,611, is awarded by the Texas Workforce Commission through the Texas Computer Education Assn. and will provide each participating high school with a netbook, LEGO robotics materials and software, and paid registration to robotics competitions.

District HighlightsHigh schools change early dismissal on April 5 tolate start on October 13

High school students will not have an early dismissal day on April 5, as previously indicated on the A/B Day Calendar for 2010-2011. Due to changes in the PSAT testing schedule, a regular bell schedule will be followed on April 5. October 13 will be a late start day at 11:50 a.m. for students who are not taking the PSAT. The testing period is 8:45-11:50 a.m.
