Intercollegiate athletic participation is an integral part of the educational mission of the University and ath-letic competition is offered to enhance the total development of the student.

PenelopeWardKylebecameRadfordUniversity’ssixth,andfirstfemale,presidentwhenshetookofficeonJune1,2005.ShecametoRUwithmorethan30yearsofexperienceinstategovernment,thecorporateandlegalworlds,andhighereducation.

Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle immediately focused on leading the university’s initiative to becomeoneofthetop50mastersuniversitiesinthenation.

TheRadfordUniversitystrategicplan“7-17”,completedin2007atherdirection,identifiesfourstrategicdirec-tives--theinvestmentinpeople,programs,globalandlocalsocietyandthefutureofRadfordUniversity.

UnderPresidentKyle’sleadership,theuniversityalsoaddeditsfirstdoctoralprogramwithanemphasisinrural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college student enrollment by offering additional doctoralandmasterslevelprograms.Shehiredtheuniversity’sfirstprovostandcreatedtwonewvicepresiden-tialareasofresponsibility,InformationTechnologyandUniversityRelations.

The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovationwithinthegoverningbody.

AnativeofsouthwestVirginia,PresidentKyleisaproductoftheGalaxpublicschoolssystem.Shegraduatedfrom Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies in English at Southern MethodistUniversityinDallas,Texas.ShereceivedherJurisDoctoratefromtheUniversityofVirginiaSchoolofLawandlaterearnedherMBAfromtheCollegeofWilliamandMary.

President Kyle served as Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery for 11 years, under three successive governors.FirstappointedbyGovernorGeorgeAllenin1994,shewasreappointedbyGovernorJamesGilmore,andthenreappointedonceagainbyGovernorMarkWarner.Previously,Ms.KylewasemployedbyCSXCor-poration,aninternationaltransportationcompany,whereshebecamethecompany’sfirstfemaleofficer.BeforejoiningCSXCorporation,shewasanattorneywithMcGuire,Woods,LLPinRichmond.ShealsotaughtEnglish

RADFORD ATHLETICSThe Radford University athletic program offers 19 varsity sports, eight for men and 11 for

women:men’sandwomen’sbasketball,crosscountry,golf,soccer,tennis,indoorandout-door track, along with field hockey, swimming, softball and volleyball for women, and base-ballformen.

The Dedmon Center and the outdoor athletic facilities, which surround the multi-purpose building are the award-winning focal point of a program that has grown rapidly the last threedecades.

The athletic program has grown dramatically since 1974-75, when men’s sports were first offeredonavarsitylevel.Growthoftheprogramhasbeenrapid,butnotrandom.Eachstep has been carefully controlled, with new sports being added only to meet existing demandsandonlyafterassurancesforaqualityoperationcouldbemet.Theresultisawell-balancedandhighlysuccessfulprogram.RadfordcurrentlycompetesintheBigSouthConference.Achartermemberoftheyoung

league, Radford has won 39 League titles in 10 different sports and has advanced to NCAApostseasonplayinsevensports.Highlanderathleticsoffersstrongsupportforitsstudent-athletes.Fromacademicadvis-

ing to compliance services, Radford gives its student-athletes the support needed to be successfulintheclassroom.Radford’sathletictrainingandstrengthandconditioningpro-gramsallowthestudent-athletestocompeteattheirbestpossiblelevel.

A true team atmosphere, the Highlander family consists of each and every Radford stu-dent-athletepastandpresent,thecoachesandathleticsstaff.Supportforeachprogramstarts from within athletics and reaches out into the general university population and the communityatlarge.Student-athletesandstaffsupporteachother,acrosssports,intotrain-ingandtheweightroom.Inaddition,strongpersonalbondsrunthroughouttheHighlanderfamilybindingstudent-athletes,coachesandstafftoeachother.

Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Lineburg has helped usher in a neweraofHighlanderathletics,markedbyunprecedentedon-andoff-fieldimprovementsandsuccesses.

In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel andstrategicplanning.

HismostvisibleinfluencetodatehasbeenontheDedmonCenter,where Lineburg has been involved with major renovations to the center-pieceofRadfordathleticsformorethan25years.Beginninginthespringof 2008, the facility underwent transformations to the arena, including a newsteel-supportedroof,anewbasketballfloor,renovatedathleticof-fices,anew-looknatatorium,andimprovedathleticlocker,training,andmedicalfacilities.

Along with the initial transformations to the Dedmon Center, an im-proved state-of-the-art strength and conditioning room, new ticketofficeandLearningEn-hancementCenter(LEC),whichhouses student-athlete aca-demic support, were completed/addedin2009.

In 2010, facility upgrades included a new high-tech videoboard / sound system to the Dedmon Center as well as a new playing surface / irrigation system and dugouts to the Rad-fordUniversityBaseballField.

Lineburg has also overseen thehiresoffivenewheadcoaches, as well as six new athleticadministrators.Hishiresinclude women’s basketball head coach Taj Njongba, head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, women’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler, head men’s soccer coach Marc Reeves and the promotion oftrackandfieldinterimdirec-

torBrentChumbleytoheadcoaches’status.AmongtheadministratorsaddedinLineburg’stenureareexecutiveassociateA.D.RandyButt,headathletictrainerChadHyatt,assistantA.D.forcommunicationsJoeyBeeler,director of student-athlete support services/senior women’s administrator StephanieBallein,AssociateA.D.forexternaloperationsGregHerring,andDirectorofFacilitiesBradEpperley.

As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09:women’ssoccer,men’sbasketball,men’stennisandsoftballclaimedBigSouthconferencecrownsandadvancedtoNCAATournamentplay.Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament title to advance to the NCAAsforthefirsttimesince1998,men’stennismadeitsthird-straightappearance,andsoftballappearedforthefirsttimeandwonRadford’sfirst-everNCAAtournamentgameinanysport.

Lineburg and the Highlanders backed their success in 2008-09 with a men’stennisandsoftballBigSouthregularseasontitlein2009-10.MickeyDean’s softball team went on to win their second straight conference tour-namentcrownbeforeadvancingtotheAthens,GeorgiaRegionalfinalwithtwomoreNCAATournamentvictories.

Heandhisstaffhavealsobeenresponsibleforcreatingafive-yearstrategic plan for the Radford athletic department and building an athletics facilitiesmasterplan.AdditionalachievementsincludeusheringinanewathleticsInternetsite(RadfordAthletics.com),andhelpingimplementanewticketsystem(TicketReturn).Lineburgandhisstaffhavealsohostedtop-levelcompetition,withfiveBigSouthchampionshipstakingplaceontheRadfordcampusfrom2008-10..

ROBERT LINEBURGRADFORD UNIVERSITY

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

In addition to making an impact on Radford athletics, Lineburg is also involvedinanumberofdifferentorganizationsandcommittees.Heisthe chairman of the Big South Conference on Basketball Improvement, a member of the Big South ad-hoc Committee on Basketball Issues, and a member of the selection committee to select Radford University’s Vice PresidentforAdvancement.

Prior to becoming Radford’s third Director of Athletics, Lineburg’s corpo-rate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton Real EstatePartnersinDallas,Texas.

Along with his business experience, Lineburg spent 15 seasons as a college basketball coach, including time as Southern Methodist’s interim headcoach.PriortoservingastheMustangsinterimheadcoach,LineburgspenteightyearsasanassistantatSMU.Followinghisinterimtenure,heservedtwomoreseasonsasanassistantcoachatSouthernMethodist.

Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison University and Emo-ry & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team.HiscoachingexperiencealsotookhimthroughtheBigSouth,ashespenttimeonthesidelineatUNCGreensboro.

A 1991 graduate of Roanoke College, Lineburg started his collegiate basketball career as a Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman beforetransferringtonearbyRoanokeCollegetoplayhisfinaltwoyears.

HeearnedhisBachelor’sinpoliticalsciencewithaminorinhistory.In 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in education from Virginia Tech, wherehewasalsoagraduateassistantonthemen’sbasketballstaff.

Lineburg is the son of retired Radford High School football coach and athleticdirectorNormanLineburgandthebrotherofDr.MarkLineburg,theSuperintendent of Bristol City Schools, Paul Lineburg, the Assistant Princi-palatWilliamByrdH.S.andWayneLineburg,whoisinhisfirstseasonastheoffensivecoordinatorattheUniversityofRichmond.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT SERVICESThemissionoftheStudent-AthleteSupportServices(SASS)officeforRadfordUniversityAthleticsistopromote,assist,andprovidecounseltoallstudent-athletes.Itsprimary,constantgoalistode-velopgraduatesandoutstandingcitizenswhohavecontributedintheareasofathleticcompetitionduringtheirtenuresofeducation.

Located in the Dedmon Athletic Center, the newly established Learning Enhancement Center is equippedwithcomputers,tutorialrooms,andastudylounge.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence onthefieldofplayandintheclassroom.TheLeague’sgrowingpresenceas an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accom-plishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partner-ships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadershipdevelopmentofeachstudent-athlete.ThishasevolvedintotheConference’smissionof“DevelopingLeadersThroughAthletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when CharlestonSouthern(thenBaptistCollege)AthleticDirectorHowardBagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, CharlestonSouthern,Campbell,CoastalCarolinaandWinthrop.Onemonthlater,Dr.EdwardM.SingletonwasselectedastheLeague’sfirstCommissionerandcontinuedtosolicitnewmembers.Hiseffortsledtothe additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the BigSouthmorethantherequiredsixmemberstoconstituteanofficialconference.TheBigSouth’sfirstyearofcompetitionwasintheFallof1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledgedNCAADivisionIstatus.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’sbasketballandwomen’sgolf.In1989,GeorgeF.“Buddy”SasserreplacedtheretiringDr.SingletonasCommissioner,andin1990,theLeaguereceiveditsfirstautomaticbid–receivinganautomaticqualifiertotheNCAABaseballChampionship.UnderSasser’ssevenyearsofleadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compli-anceprograms,andintroduceditsfirst-evermen’sbasketballtelevisionpackage,featuringtheBigSouthcompetingamongsomeofthefinestteamsinthenation.

InAugust1996,KyleB.KallanderreplacedSasserasthethirdCom-missioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has beeninstrumentalinaggressivelypromotingtheConferencetonewlevels.The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’sbasketball,baseballandsoftballforthefirsttimeinConferencehistory, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as

awholethroughaggressiveanduniquetelevisionpackages.Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initi-

ateditsfirstlong-rangestrategicplan,re-affirmingtheLeague’svisionasa distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional lifethroughathleticcompetition.Healsospearheadedtheeffortstoaddfootball as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and hassolidifiedConferencemembershipwiththeadditionsofHighPoint,Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter memberCampbellUniversity.Kallander’slongrangevisionhasalsoincluded technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its firstliveeventvideostreamingin2005andhassinceexpandeditsvideoofferings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social mediaplatforms.

In the last 15 years, the Big South has experienced monumental growthandsuccessinnearlyeverysport.Duringthistime,theCon-ference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track&field,andmen’sgolf,hadanindividualselectedtoplayintheNCAASinglesChampionshipfourtimesinadditiontothefirstmen’stennisdoublesat-largeselection,hadtheNo.1rankedmen’sgolferinthe country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivisionin2006,andhadaninstitutionfinishfifthintheNCAAMen’sGolfChampionships–thehighest-everteamfinishinanNCAAevent.

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anni-versary.TheLeaguealsohonoreditsheritagewiththeTop25“BestoftheBest” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crownedtheNo.1momentintheBigSouth’sfirst25years.TheConfer-ence’son-fieldaccomplishmentshavebeenduplicatedintheclassroom.Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named totheBigSouth’sPresidentialHonorRollformaintainingacumulative3.0grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americansinitsquarter-centuryofexistence.

With more than 11 years of golf teaching experience as well as a professional background, Jeff Beeler is entering his second season astheheadwomen’sgolfcoachatRadfordUniversity.

For the second straight season, Beeler led his 2009-10 squad to itshighestfinishinschoolhistoryastheHighlandersplacedfourthatthe2010BigSouthWomen’sGolfChampionships.

“I continue to see progress in the right direction,” commented Beeler.“OurultimategoalistowintournamentsandtheBigSouthConferenceChampionship.WiththenucleuswehaveinplaceandtheworkethicIseeonadailybasisourgoalsareveryreachable.”

Inadditiontomatchingtheirhighestfinishinschoolhistory,theHighlandersalsorecordedfourTop-10finishes,includingasecond-place showing at the 2009 Draper Valley Intercollegiate where they cardeda36-holeschoolrecordof597.

Individually, Beeler guided Megan Leineweber as she was named to the Big South All-Conference squad, while Maggie Watts earned her third straight all-academicselection.

A two-time Big South Golfer of the Week,LeineweberfinishedfifthintheleaguewithapairofTop-10finishesthrougheightevents.

Injusthisfirstseasonasacollegiatecoach, Beeler’s 2008-09 club matched thebestfinishinschoolhistorywithafourth place showing at the 2009 Big SouthWomen’sGolfChampionship.

To go along with their strong show-ing in the season-ending event, Beeler

guidedtheHighlanderstofourtop-fivefinishesayearagoincludingarunner-upfinishattheLadyHerdFallClassic.

Beeler’s 2008-09 Highlanders also set a school mark for team stroke average, bettering the previous standard by almost four strokes.

Not only did Beeler’s squad experience great success as a team, Hannah Coles put together one of the most successful individual campaignsinRadfordwomen’sgolfhistory.Colesrecordedback-to-back wins in the fall en route to earning all-conference honors thankstotheleague’sthirdloweststrokeaverages.

As head coach, his duties include managing every aspect of the women’sprogram,includingpractice,schedulingandrecruiting.

Beeler spent the last three years as the head golf professional of OldTrailGolfClub,locatedjustoutsideCharlottesvilleinCrozet,Va.In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the course, he gave private lessons and led clinics; Beeler was also the course’s tournamentdirectorandorganizedtheOldTrailInvitational,oneofCentralVirginia’stopamateurtournaments.

Along with his professional experience, Beeler has been teaching the game since 1997 in a number of capacities, ranging from private lessons to players of all skills and ages, to coaching at the varsity highschoollevel.

Beeler’s playing resume includes 1997 Jefferson District Golfer of

the Year honors at Western Albemarle High School, as well as inter-collegiate rounds at Campbell University, which is located in Buies Creek,N.C.Heearnedabachelor’sdegreeinbusinessadministra-tionfromCampbellin2002,withafocusingolfmanagement.

Leineweber, a 2010 graduate of Rad-ford University received her undergradu-atedegreeinBusinessManagement.

A member of the 2010 Big South All-Conference team and two-time Big South Women’s Golfer of the week, Leineweber capped her senior cam-paignwithapairofTop-10finishes,while leading the Highlanders in scoring in10outof16rounds.

Hertopfinishoftheyearcameatthe C&F Bank Intercollegiate, where she tied for second out of 112 competitorswitha36-holetotalof147(72-75).Leineweber’sfirstweeklyhonorcamefollowingathird-placefinishattheseason-openingDraperValleyIntercollegiatewhereshefinishedthetwo-dayeventatone-over145(72-73).

Leineweber is just the sixth player in school history to earn a spot on the all-conference squad and second in as many years as HannahColeswasselectedin2009.

Duringthe2008-09season,Leineweberfinishedsecondonthecluband11thintheBigSouthwitha79.5strokeaverage.Asa junior she competed in all 10 events and was the low Highlander finisheronthreeseparateoccasions.

Leineweberrecordedback-to-backtop-fivefinishestoconcludethefallcampaign,includingatiedforfourth-placefinishattheCharleston Southern Invitational and came home tied for third at the LadyHerdFallClassic.

As a sophomore, Leineweber competed in 10 of the Highland-ers’ 11 tournaments where she recorded a season-best third place finish(226)attheLadyMonarchInvitational.Shealsoshotateamandcareer-low69attheGreatSmokiesWomen’sCollegiate.
