2010-11 Season Outlook

2010-11 Norwich Women’s Basketball5

Every new season offers afresh start, and never has that rungmore true than with the 2010-11women’s basketball squad. Havinggraduated six seniors in the spring of2010, the Cadets lost roughly 62-per-cent of their point production and

48-percent of their rebounding.Head coach Mark Zacher em-

barks on his second season at thehelm of the Norwich women’s bas-ketball program. His first campaignwith the Cadets resulted in a 20-8overall finish, dropping only two oftheir 13 home contests.

Zacher will be expecting a lotof his returning athletes to step upand become role models, as he worksto help his first recruiting class findtheir legs and prepare them for thecollegiate level of competition.

“We are a very young team,”says Zacher. “I am looking to ourteam captains – seniors ChristineDaniels and Laurel McWilliams andjunior Kelsey Knapp – to provide ourteam with the leadership and guidance

that we will need to grow together asa unit.”

The captains will lead by ex-ample, setting the standards for hardwork on and off the court both vo-cally and physically.

The Cadets’ goal for the2010-11 season is daily improvementas individuals and as a team.

“Our true competition is al-ways against ourselves,” says Zacher.“We want to be better today than wewere yesterday and better at the endof the season than we were at the be-ginning.”

Zacher will expect the sameoutput of energy from his squadwhether they are playing the compet-itive Emmanuel Saints or running apractice drill. If Norwich doesn’t beattheir opponent by the points on thescoreboard, it will be expected theywould have outworked their oppo-nent physically and mentally.

“This is a team, I believe, thatwill be known by its work ethic, its de-sire, and its commitment,” saysZacher.

To fill the shoes that were leftbehind by last year’s seniors, theCadets will be looking for the return-ers to produce more and the new-comers to make an immediate impact.

“We return proven perform-ers in Daniels and McWilliams,” saysZacher. “Knapp and junior JocelynFasulo will have expanded roles andsophomores Jessalyn Sweeney andAndrea Vogt will be looked to forsolid contributions. But truthfully, tobe successful, we will need our entireteam to be major contributers, everynight, to our team effort.”

As for the first-year players,Zacher brought in two point-guards:

Kristin Brown and Tylita Butler.“They will be given an impor-

tant responsibility immediately,” saysZacher. “Together they will be askedto run our team on the floor. In addi-tion, Erin Clark will give us a solid op-tion on the wing.”

In addition to a new squad, the Cadets welcome a new assistantcoach, Lutfiyya Muhammad. Muham-mad comes to Norwich after a verysuccessful career playing both Divi-sion I and Division II collegiatewomen’s basketball. She started hercareer at Division I Delaware StateUniversity, where she was a memberof a MEAC conference champi-onship team in her freshman year.

Transferring after that season,Muhammad played three years at Di-vision II Cheyney University in Penn-sylvania. At Cheyney, she reached the1,000-point plateau and was a two-time PSAC all-conference performer. “She knows firsthand what it takes tobe successful at the collegiate levelboth as an individual performer andas a team,” says Zacher. “Lutfiyyabrings the wealth of that basketballexperience and her youthful enthusi-asm to our program.”

The Cadets 2010-11 cam-paign will commence on Nov. 15, asthey travel to Plattsburgh State for a6 p.m. tip-off.
