Welcome to

UW-Stevens Point

The College of Professional Studies, the academic home of UW-Stevens Point Athletics, is proud of the students who dedicate themselves to both their academic and athletic goals.

This past year, UW-Stevens Point placed 12th in the Director’s Cup standings which measures more than 400 overall Division III athletics programs. Our squads also qualified teams or athletes for NCAA tournament competition in 13 different sports and had three teams place in the top 5 nationally. Two student-athletes were named their sport’s respective WIAC scholar athletes and several others won academic honors from various sport organizations. Over the past ten years, thirty six UW-Stevens Point student-athletes have earned Aca-demic All American honors for high achievement in athletics and in academics.

Every year, generous alumni, parents, and friends support UW-Stevens Point athletics through our Excellence in Athletics fund. For this, we are very grateful. For more information about making a gift, contact me at [email protected] or call 715-346-4904, or contact Assistant Director of Development for Athletics Tony Ro-mano at [email protected] or 715-346-3406.

Welcome to another year of Pointer Sports. The athletic program and school of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics at UW-Stevens Point are designed to be

an integral part of the community while supporting the educational mission of the university.

Our faculty and coaching staff take as much pride in the academic achievements of our student-athletes as they do in their athletic accomplishments. We expect our student-athletes in all 20 sports to excel both in the classroom and on the field of competition. We believe this difficult but gratifying combination is being satisfied here at UW-Ste-vens Point.

We hope you enjoy today’s competition, as well as all Pointer Sports, and that your en-joyment is equal to the pride we have in sponsoring these contests. Enjoy the game!

One of the winningest coaches in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history, Shirley Egner begins her 22nd season as head coach of the Pointers in 2010-11.

Egner has compiled a 382-175 overall record in her 21 sea-sons, ranking second on the all-time WIAC wins list. Over the last 10 seasons, Coach Egner has guided the Pointers to an average of 23 wins per season and her all-time coaching record is 523-225.

Egner is a three time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree, earning the award in 2003-04, 2007-08, and in 2008-09. In 2010 Egner was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball

Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Coach Egner led the Pointers to the 2001-02 NCAA Division III championship with a 67-65 win over St. Lawrence (N.Y.). She then took the Pointers back to the final four again two years later in 2003-04, where they placed fourth.

The Pointers have achieved their best success in recent seasons with a 233-56 record over the past ten seasons, which is the best winning percentage of any league team over that span. UW-Stevens Point’s best record was 30-3 during its championship season in 2001-02, becom-ing just the eighth team in Division III history to win 30 games in a season. Along the way to the championship, Egner also guided the Pointers to a 66-60 victory over four-time defending Division III champion Washington (Mo.), snapping the Bears’ 70-game home winning streak.

UW-Stevens Point won back-to-back WIAC titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05. In 2003-04, the Pointers also captured their first-ever WIAC tournament crown, as Egner was named the league’s Coach of the Year. In 2007-08, the Pointers finished third in the WIAC regular season standings, but became the first non-No. 1 seed ever to win the WIAC tournament crown with wins at Whitewater and at Eau Claire, as Egner was again named Coach of the Year. Pointers are a league-best 121-39 in the WIAC over the past 10 seasons.

Egner came to UW-Stevens Point from Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, La., where she served as a graduate assistant.

A native of McFarland, Wis. and a 1980 graduate of UW-La Crosse, she began her coaching career as head girls’ basket-ball coach at Shiocton (Wis.) High School. After a one-year stint as the girls’ freshman coach at Monona Grove (Wis.) High School, she became head girls’ coach at Waunakee (Wis.) High School, where she led the Warriors to a five-year record of 115-40, including conference titles in 1985, 1986 and 1987 and state tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987.

Following the 1986-87 season, she was named the WBCA District Five Coach of the Year and was chosen to coach the Class B South Team in the WBCA All-Star Game in Madison.

Egner, who was the chair of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball committee from 2006-08 overseeing the national selection committee, is the senior women’s administrator and also a lecturer in the Department of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics at UW-Stevens Point.

In 2003, Groshek was presented the NCAA Today’s Top VIII Award, which is presented to the top eight student-athletes from all NCAA divisions and all NCAA sponsored sports over a calendar year. Groshek (above) was the second straight UW-Stevens Point student-athlete to receive the award as former track and field and cross country standout Leah Juno was selected in 2002. They were the first two athletes from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference earn the award in its 32-year history.

Groshek, a Rosholt native, led the wom-en’s basketball team to the 2002 national championship, while posting a 3.74 grade point average in Biology.

In 2005, senior Amanda Nechuta became the first UW-Stevens Point player to be named NCAA Division III National Player of the year.

She was presented with the award in April of 2005 at the WBCA Awards Luncheon at the Indiana Convention Center during the 2005 Division I Women’s Final Four. She is only one of two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players to be selected for the award in its 25-year history.

During her senior season, Nechuta averaged 16.8 points per game and led the Pointers to their second straight WIAC championship. During her four-year career, the Pointers had a 101-19 record, including the 2002 national championship and a fourth place finish at the 2004 final four.

Nechuta was a two-time Kodak All-American First Team member and was the first two-time winner of the WIAC Player of the Year award and set UW-Stevens Point's all-time scoring record with 1,801 points from 2001-05. The point total ranks third in WIAC history and Nechuta also holds the school record with 681 field goals made. She led the WIAC in scoring her sopho-more, junior, and senior seasons. Nechuta ranked fourth in school history in career rebounds and was a three-time member of the WIAC’s All-Defensive Team. Nechuta also was a three-time All-American in the shot put.

Schmitt was honored in the fall of 2005 as the NCAA Woman of the Year finalist for the state of Wisconsin. She was also select-ed as the winner of the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to one male and one female stu-dent-athlete in each NCAA division across all sports. Both awards honor outstanding student-athletes who have excelled in aca-demics, athletics and community leader-ship.

Schmitt, a Brookfield native, was also a key member of the 2002 national champi-onship team and led the Pointers back to the final four in 2004. She was a four-time all-conference selection in women’s soccer and the WIAC Player of the Year in 2004. Schmitt also competed one season in track and field and anchored the conference out-door champion 400-meter relay.

Schmitt posted a 3.85 grade point aver-age and was very active in community organizations, while serving two years as president of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Business Backs/Success

THE POINTERS celebrate a 66-60 NCAA tournament win at Washington University in 2002 that snapped the then four-time defending national champion’s 70-game home win streak.

One of four schools to win two NCAA Division III women’s basketball championships, UW-Stevens Point boasts an outstanding tradition with national titles in 1986-87 and in 2001-02.

The success has been at its peak in recent seasons where the Pointers have posted nine straight 20-win campaigns while making trips to the final four two of the past eight seasons.

Over the last nine seasons, the Pointers have posted a 215-49 overall record. They have been incredibly tough against non-conference competition with a 97-11 record over their last 108 games with two of the losses coming in the 2003-04 final four when the Pointers placed fourth in the country after winning the WIAC regular season and tournament titles.

In fact, UW-Stevens Point’s 19-6 all-time NCAA tournament record is the best of any school that has played at least 10 post-season games.

In 1987, the Pointers won the WWIAC title and finished 27-2 overall under coach Linda Wunder en route to their first national title. They beat Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) 81-74 in the championship game in Scranton, Pa. and also played three home games before reaching the final four. Donna Pivonka and Karla Miller were both named to the all-tournament team.

The Pointers finished runner-up in the WIAC regular season and postseason tournament in 2002, but still earned an at-large bid to the national tournament and took full advantage.

They defeated St. Lawrence (N.Y.) 67-65 in the finals in Terre Haute, Ind. to finish the season 30-3. Along the way, the Pointers ousted four-time defending cham-pion Washington (Mo.), snapping the Bears’ 70-game home court winning streak. UW-Stevens Point also played three home games among the six postseason con-tests and packed Berg Gym with nearly 1,800 fans for the sectional tournament. Carry Boehning was the tournament MVP and Tara Schmitt also earned all-tour-nament accolades.

In 2004-05, the Pointers featured the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division III National Player of the Year in Amanda Nechuta, who led the WIAC in scoring three straight seasons and earned the opportunity to play in the WBCA all-star game against the nation’s top Division I players at the 2005 Women’s Final Four.32
