Debbie Bamberger, Tehiyah’s new board president, and her husband Josh are the parents of Eli, in third grade, and Noah, in kindergarten. Debbie is a women’s health nurse practitioner and the lead clinician at Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific’s El Cerrito Plaza health center. Debbie has been a nurse practitioner for 17 years in a variety of settings. She is a founder of the Women’s Community Clinic, San Francisco’s only free clinic for women. The Women’s Community Clinic was started in 1999 on a shoestring budget and has grown to an annual budget of $1.5 million, 17 staff members, and over 100 volunteer health workers and clinicians. Debbie graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., and received her master’s of science degree from UCSF.

Thank you very much for your generosity this past year. We have done an excellent job raising money and using it wisely to sustain and improve our extraordinary school. We reached a milestone of 100% parent participation in giving to the Tehiyah Fund, a reflection of your commitment to this warm and close community.

Tehiyah’s Board of Trustees is concentrating on several strategic areas this year to ensure the financial sustainability of the school. We want to guarantee that current and future students will receive the academic skills they need, steeped in the foundation of Jewish ethics and values, to be successful in these rapidly changing times.

The Board of Trustees held a board retreat in the fall, working with a consultant to focus the Board’s efforts on development and recruitment. We also had a groundbreaking joint meeting with the Boards of both Oakland Hebrew Day School and Contra Costa Jewish Day School to brainstorm how we can work together to build strength for Jewish continuity in the East Bay.

The Board, Head of School, senior administrators, parents, and teachers have been hard at work preparing for our re-accreditation review with the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). The accreditation process happens every six years, and it is an opportunity for us to closely review everything at Tehiyah. The accreditation review culminates with a CAIS site visit in February. They will thoroughly review our curriculum and administrative work, and meet with all stakeholders in our community.

The review process for accreditation prepared us to launch a new strategic planning initiative in 2012. In 2011, a small committee of trustees reviewed Tehiyah’s 2006 Strategic Plan to assess which goals have been met and which are still relevant. We have begun the next round of strategic planning, delving in more detail into how to meet the current and future needs of the school. We plan to involve many members of our community in the process, as your input is invaluable to us.

We are very proud that Tehiyah continues to operate within our budget and to make wise financial decisions despite the tough economic climate. Yes, money is tighter now, but Tehiyah’s Board, its Finance Committee, and the senior administrators are committed to the school’s financial responsibility and to guaranteeing the quality of our programs. There are many opportunities to help keep Tehiyah’s mission and goals in the forefront of all of our future planning. Your donations do make a difference — from providing tuition assistance to a child who wouldn’t otherwise be able to come to Tehiyah, to helping send our eighth-graders to Washington, D.C., and to Israel, to improving our art room and library, and more. Please contact Heike Friedman in the Development Office if you’d like to make a targeted donation.

Again, I appreciate your involvement with Tehiyah and am grateful we are in this community together.

Warmly,

Debbie Bamberger, Board President

I also love that I still sort of know Hebrew!”— Ariel Zucker

Mizocks Launch Run for Tehiyah

Adam and Lauran Mizock have two children at Tehiyah. Adam is actively involved in the East Bay Jewish community, serving on the board of directors of the Jewish Federation of the East Bay and as the chair of the Federation’s strategic planning task force. He is currently a fellow in the second year of the Wexner Heritage Program, an intensive Jewish study and leadership preparation program. After serving as Tehiyah’s president from 2006-2011, Adam continues to be on Tehiyah’s Board of Trustees. Adam is an attorney at BlackRock, which is one of the world’s largest investment management firms.

By Debbie Rosenfeld-Caparaz

Adam Mizock proved last school year how far he would go for Tehiyah — 26.2 miles to complete his first marathon.

By finishing the California International Marathon in impressive fashion, Adam raised over $22,000 for Tehiyah. Prior to training for the event, he had never run more than six miles.

“The outcome was fantastic,” said Adam, currently a member of Tehiyah’s board of trustees after serving five years as president. “I don’t think I would have finished the marathon without a community and more than 130 donors cheering me on.”

This year, Adam won’t be running alone as the Mizock family has introduced The Run for Tehiyah as the main fundraising event for the eighth-grade Israel trip. Over 60 parents, students, teachers, grandparents and friends of Tehiyah are training to participate in the Oakland Running Festival on March 25, running as part of a marathon relay team or as an individual runner in the 5K race (three miles). Adam’s wife, Lauran, and his children, Eli (eighth-grader) and Clara (fourth-grader), are part of the Tehiyah Running Group that trains together weekly.

The goal for The Run for Tehiyah is to raise at least $20,000 with all of the funds going towards Tehiyah’s Israel Education Fund — established to ensure that the school’s eighth-graders now and in the future will be able to afford the Israel trip. Adam and Lauran pledged $25,000 (over five years) to start the fund.

“We want to be sure that the school and students can afford the trip,” Adam said. “We have seen the impact of the trip on the eighth-grade graduates. It is the culmination of their growth and Jewish education at Tehiyah, and caps an amazing year with the Washington, D.C. trip in the fall.”

Adam would like to see The Run for Tehiyah become an annual event.

“It has all the elements of a great program,” Adam said. “It brings people together around a common purpose; it encourages healthy living; it’s fun, and it can succeed by raising funds from many donors with gifts of any size.”

Join Adam by supporting the Run for Tehiyah today online at tehiyah.givezooks.com/grassroots_fundraisers/the-run-for-tehiyah.

“Tehiyah has enriched my family’s life through its education of our children and its impact on our community,” he said. “I have been inspired by the way our students and graduates take the Tehiyah curriculum to heart as they engage in lifelong learning (l’midah), social justice and giving to those in need (tzedakah), and making the world a better place (tikkun olam).”

Remembering Shira Ulmer

Shira Nattana Ulmer (née Riff ) was funny, loving, ironic, glamorous, and practical all at once. She was a beloved wife, mother, teacher and fast friend when she died on April 23, 2011, at age 31, after bravely battling breast cancer for one year.

Shira grew up in the Bay Area with her parents, Mayer and Linda Riff. According to Linda, Shira was “the song in our hearts.” She was a student at Tehiyah from kindergarten through eighth grade, and many of her Tehiyah classmates remained her closest friends. She loved to sing and dance, and performed in many Tehiyah events.

Shira also attended Berkeley High School, UC Santa Cruz and Mills College. She met her husband, Ian Ulmer, at Santa Cruz. They moved to Los Angeles where Shira worked as a sixth-grade teacher at Crestview Preparatory School. She was respected and loved by her students. She not only taught them well academically, but she helped them become kinder, more thoughtful young adults.

In 2009, Shira and Ian became the proud parents of Lena Rose. Shira was a great mom and enjoyed sharing every moment of her daughter’s life.

Shira loved competition, singing, Bruce Springsteen, flamingos, Smurfs, marionettes, art, animals, smashing pennies, and travel, but she loved her family and friends most of all. She taught all of us who knew her about love, about loyalty, and now, sadly, about loss.

The development committee continued its successful fundraising efforts in 2010-11 under the guidance of the development co-chairs, Irene Kim and Rebekah Wildman. We would like to thank them for their leadership and dedication to Tehiyah, and to extend our appreciation to the entire 2010-11 development team.

Thank you to our Tehiyah Fund Co-Chairs, Tanir Ami and Debbie Bamberger, and their team of wonderful volunteers who gave their time and energy so generously to our Tehiyah Fund campaign. Their efforts made it possible for us to reach 100% parent participation for the first time in our annual fundraising campaign's history. The staff and the board of trustees also reached 100% participation — for the fifth year in a row.

Anchored by several leadership challenge gifts from members of the Tehiyah community, the Tehiyah Fund raised $288,845, exceeding our goal by 16%. We are especially grateful to Tehiyah grandparents Connie and Alfred Weissman whose $25,000 challenge gift was pivotal in the success of the campaign.

We successfully kicked off two new initiatives: a major gifts program that enables supporters to strengthen Tehiyah through directed giving, and a planned gifts program as part of the Create a Jewish Legacy initiative of the Jewish Community Foundation of the East Bay. So far, Tehiyah has been named a beneficiary in 12 bequests, with an estimated value of $1.6 million.

Last year, we raised a total of $800,201 from individual donors and foundations — THANK YOU. Without your support, Tehiyah would not be the same. Proceeds from the 2010-11 Tehiyah Fund enabled us to outfit all third through eighth-grade classrooms with SMART Boards. A donation from a grandpar-ent underwrote the purchase of the Accelerated Math Program, a computer-based program that allows for individualized math instruction in fifth through eighth grade.

The Tehiyah Fund is pivotal in maintaining the socio-economic diversity of our student population. Currently, 145 students are receiving tuition assistance — more than half of the student body. During these difficult financial times, generous contributions from our community enabled many families to remain at Tehiyah when it would otherwise be impossible.

Two Nights, One CommunityTehiyah Day School will host the sixth-annual Two Nights, One Community dinner series. But this time, there is a twist. We will start the weekend with “An Evening in Spain,” a cocktail party with flamenco music and dancing, and will continue the next night with intimate dinners in private homes, featuring guest speakers Matt Biers-Ariel, Leah Garchik, Josh Kornbluth and Jaron Lanier.

An Evening in Spain — Saturday, March 3Experience the passion of flamenco through the tones of Keni el Lebrijano. Chef Lyell Cash will tantalize your taste buds with amazing Spanish appetizers and cocktails. The event will take place at a local art gallery.

Keni el Lebrijano is a master of flamenco guitar and "the godfather of the Berkeley flamenco scene.” Keni, who has been called the best flamenco guitarist in the Bay Area, was a student of Diego Del Gastor, one of the most influential flamenco guitar players of the 20th century.

Chef Lyell Cash: Owner of Your Private Chef and senior event chef for Grace Street Catering for over 21 years, Chef Lyell was also an event chef for Chez Panisse in Berkeley and chef for special events at Eccolo in Berkeley.

Intimate Dinners — Sunday, March 4Matt Biers-Ariel has been warming hearts in the Bay Area for 15 years with his rich and warm Jewish-themed stories. He is a Jewish educator, Jewish storyteller and an all around funny guy. He has penned five books on Jewish themes and will release a new book in April. Becky Jacobs, owner of 12 Tribes Catering, will prepare a delicious classic European-Jewish inspired meal.

Leah Garchik has been writing a daily column in the San Francisco Chronicle since 1984, and the National Society of Newspaper Columnists named it Best Items Column in the country in 1992. In 1998, 2000 and 2004, the San Francisco Bay Area Publicity Club named her Favorite Columnist. Gail Marell and Judi Swinks from GREATPARTY+GREATFOOD will prepare an exquisite Italian meal.

Josh Kornbluth is a monologist, writer, actor, movie star, "fashion icon" and television star. He hosted the KQED Public Television interview program, “The Josh Kornbluth Show.” Josh is known for his lively, intelligent, offbeat, intriguing and hilarious performances. Epic Bites will prepare an inspiring modern American meal.

Jaron Lanier, a Tehiyah parent, popularized the term 'Virtual Reality,' and in the early 1980s founded VPL Research, the first company to sell VR products. Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010. Kalki Tesfay, owner of Addis Restaurant, will prepare an exotic Ethiopian meal.
