Despite the past success of NU's program, Krapfl believes the best is yet to come.

SACKETT’S HONORSThree-Time First-Team Academic All-Big 12 (2004, 2005, 2006)Tied for 79th at NCAA Championships (2006)10 Career Top 25 Tournament Finishes

Sara Sackett was a senior leader on one of the most successful teams in Nebraska women’s golf history in 2005-06. The Cambridge, Neb., native produced an impressive 77.56 stroke average on the year, while notching four top-15 individual tournament finishes. Her senior season included a career-best second-place finish with a career-best 223 at 2005 Chip-N Club Invitational, which helped the Huskers secure the team title. Sackett also tied for fourth individually with a 224 at the prestigious Edwin Watts/Palmetto Invitational, and added an 11th-place finish (226) at the Central District Invitational as a senior. After helping the Huskers qualify for the NCAA Championships, Sackett performed well at the national tournament with rounds of 77, 76 and 75 over her final three rounds to tie for 79th individually (309). Her four-round total matched teammate Elli Brown for the fifth-best score ever by a Husker at the NCAA Championships. A three-year member of the Husker lineup, Sackett competed in 96 rounds during her five-year NU career and finished with a 79.27 stroke average, including a career-best 71. Before coming to Nebraska, Sackett made history at Cambridge High School by becoming the first girl to medal in the boys state tournament, finishing eighth in Class C-2 as a junior. Sackett competed against boys throughout her high school career because the NSAA did not sponsor girls golf in Class C-2. In addition to her success on the course, Sackett was a three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 selection for the Huskers, and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Nebraska in 2006. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in educational administration with an emphasis in student affairs from Nebraska. Before returning to NU, Sackett served as a fitting specialist for Ping golf clubs from 2007 to 2009. She also traveled extensively marketing Ping products at various of events.

2010-11 NEBRASKA WOMEN’S GOLF4

Hall of Fame football coach Tom Osborne has continued to leave a lasting impression on the history of Nebraska Athletics since returning to lead the Husker program as the school’s 13th athletic director on Oct. 16, 2007. Osborne, who led Nebraska to three national championships (1994, 1995, 1997) and 255 victories in his 25 years as the Huskers’ head football coach, has continued to use his impressive leadership skills to guide the NU athletic department as a whole over the past three seasons.

With the core values of integrity, trust, respect, teamwork and loyalty serving as guiding principles for Nebraska’s 23-sport program, the Huskers have enjoyed renewed success in Osborne’s first three years as athletic director. In 2009-10, Nebraska finished 17th in the NACDA Directors’ Cup final standings, the Huskers’ best showing since 2000-01.

One of Osborne’s first major decisions as athletic director was to hire Bo Pelini as the Huskers’ football coach. Pelini has energized Nebraska’s storied tradition with back-to-back nine-win seasons and a pair of Big 12 North Division titles in his first two years. In 2009, the Huskers notched 10 wins, including a 33-0 win over Arizona in the Holiday Bowl, while finishing in the top 15 in both major national polls.

The tradition-rich NU volleyball program has claimed a pair of Big 12 titles and advanced to three NCAA Elite Eight appearances, while the women’s basketball program has earned two NCAA Tournament trips, while notching the best season in school history with a 2010 Big 12 title and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. The NU wrestling program shared the 2009 Big 12 title and finished in the top 16 at three straight NCAA Championships. The NU men’s track and field team has captured a pair of Big 12 outdoor crowns, while the men’s and women’s teams have produced five top-20 finishes indoors and outdoors over the past three years. The men’s and women’s gymnastics teams both produced top-10 NCAA finishes in 2010, while the Husker bowling team won the 2009 NCAA title and finished in the top eight at the NCAA Championships each of the

past three years. The NU rifle team has produced a pair of top-six NCAA finishes in the last three years, while the men’s and women’s tennis teams both earned NCAA Tournament trips in 2010.

In addition to their competitive success, the Huskers have continued to set high standards academically at both the conference and national levels. Nebraska led the Big 12 with eight CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 2009-10, increasing NU’s nation-leading total to 277 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans all-time, across all sports. The Huskers also led the Big 12 with a league-record 178 academic all-conference selections, along with a conference-record 687 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selections. NU graduated 121 student-athletes from August of 2009 through May of 2010, while increasing its Big 12-leading exhausted eligibility graduation rate to 94 percent.

The Huskers also have continued to set the standard on the national level in the area of life skills. In 2010-11, Nebraska will open its new Student Life Complex, which is designed to help Husker student-athletes maximize their performance in the classroom and the community.

The Student Life Complex is the first step in Osborne’s aggressive building plan for Nebraska’s athletic facilities. In the summer of 2010, the athletic department broke ground on the Hendricks Training Complex at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, which will directly benefit the men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling programs with new practice and team areas. The project is also expected to lead to additional opportunities for improved facilities for many other Husker Olympic sport programs. The Hendricks Training Complex is scheduled to open before the 2011-12 season.

In the spring of 2010, the city of Lincoln also received voter approval to begin construction on the 16,000-seat Haymarket Arena, which will serve as the new competitive home for both Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs beginning in 2013-14.

Not long after the historic vote in Lincoln, Osborne helped Chancellor Harvey Perlman announce an even more historic move with the shift by Nebraska from the Big 12 to the Big Ten Conference beginning in 2011-12. Nebraska’s move to the Big Ten is expected to add University-wide academic opportunities, while providing financial stability for the athletic department for years to come.

Before being asked by Chancellor Perlman to return to NU as athletic director in 2007, Osborne served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district) from 2000 to 2006. He returned to academia following a 2006 gubernatorial bid, serving as a senior lecturer at Nebraska in the College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics, in the fall of 2007. Osborne also worked as a consultant for local college athletic departments for two years.

Osborne and his wife, Nancy, continue to pour their time and support into the TeamMates mentoring program, which they founded in 1991. TeamMates provides encouragement to school-aged youth to help them graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education.

Osborne’s leadership of the TeamMates program began while he was putting the final touches on one of the best coaching careers in college football history. The Hastings, Neb., native, who earned master’s and doctoral degrees in educational psychology from Nebraska, was named NU’s 25th head coach following the 1972 season.

In 25 seasons with Osborne at the helm, the Huskers mounted a 255-49-3 record - the sixth-most wins in major college history. Osborne’s .836 winning percentage ranked fifth all-time. His career came to a close with a 42-17 win over No. 3 Tennessee in the 1998 Orange Bowl, when he became the first coach in college football history to retire as a reigning national champion. Following his career, he became one of just four coaches in history to have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived for induction into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in December of 1998.

Osborne’s 1994 and 1995 teams allowed Nebraska to become just the second school in history to post back-to-back perfect national championship seasons (Oklahoma 1955-56). Nebraska put together the best five-year run in college football history from 1993 to 1997, going 60-3 with five straight 11-win seasons.

Osborne led NU to 13 conference crowns, including six of his last seven seasons on the sideline. All 25 of his Husker teams won at least nine games and went to a bowl, while 15 won 10-or-more games.

In the classroom, the NU football program totaled 65 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in Osborne’s 25 years. In fact, he accumulated more football Academic All-Americans in his 25 years as coach than any other football program in the nation has produced in its history.

A member of the Nebraska Athletic Department since 1979, Pat Logsdon was promoted to senior woman administrator on March 7, 2008. She had previously served the NU administration as both an assistant and associate athletic director before adding the duties of her new role.

Logsdon’s duties include oversight on all administrative issues and operational functions of the Athletic Director’s office; oversight in the areas of administration, athletic medicine, nutrition, football operations and equipment; developing and implementing administrative policies and procedures, assisting with strategic planning, reviewing and maintaining game and coaching contracts and oversight of the administrative budget.

Previously, Logsdon spent six seasons as NU’s director of football operations, the first female in Division I to serve in that capacity. She handled organization of all recruiting functions, supervised compliance activities and coordinated all football administrative operations, including travel and practice operations. Logsdon served three years as assistant to the director of football operations and 14 seasons as the football recruiting secretary.

Logsdon received a bachelor’s degree in education from Nebraska in 1989. She is married to Rob Logsdon.

Associate Athletic Director Bob Burton joined the Nebraska athletic department in 1998. He spent 10 years as associate athletic director for compliance/sports administration from 1998 to 2007.

Burton is responsible for the direct administrative supervision to the sports of golf, tennis, gymnastics, track and field, cross country, bowling, rifle, softball, wrestling and swimming and diving. He also oversees the operation of Haymarket Park. Working with the Lincoln Saltdogs, he helps set the budget for field and stadium operation costs and create strategic plans for the facility.

Burton is a member of the athletic department’s executive team, which helps set policy, develops short- and long-term goals and objectives, and creates strategic plans for the department. Burton has expanded his responsibilities by assisting the development office in areas of fundraising and building relationships with athletic department supporters.

Burton filled a similar position at Oklahoma State as the assistant athletic director for sports administration and compliance from 1993 to 1997. He oversaw OSU’s Olympic sports programs as well as the training and strength and conditioning, wrestling, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s tennis programs.

Burton came to Nebraska from Texas Tech, where he served as an associate athletic director for compliance for one year. While at Texas Tech, Burton helped complete the NCAA investigation into the Red Raider athletic department and analyzed the entire compliance system at the institution. He also helped identify and implement financial aid and eligibility systems, including changes in personnel and restructuring of the compliance department.

Burton, who was a member of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer committee for three years and was a member of the NCAA Division I bowling committee, served as a legislative administrator for the NCAA from 1989 to 1993. At the NCAA, he was involved in the development of legislation, interpretation of regulations and reviewed legal issues related to the application of the association’s regulations. He served as an NCAA liaison to committees and conducted comprehensive education to several intercollegiate athletic conferences. He has served on the National Association of Athletic Compliance Coordinators Executive Committee and the subcommittee of Big 12 Directors of Compliance.

He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Nebraska in 1985 and his juris doctorate from the Nebraska College of Law in 1989. A native of Falls City, Neb., Burton and his wife, Krista, have a daughter, Elly, and sons Robert Falk, McClain John and Abram Lawslo.

A member of the Nebraska Athletics senior administration since May 2003, Marc Boehm (pronounced BAME) serves as Executive Associate Athletic Director and is the top assistant to the athletic director. Boehm fulfills the director's responsibilities in his absence and also serves as the department's chief operating officer.

Boehm oversees the efforts of several areas within athletics, including marketing, media relations, HuskerVision, facilities and events. Boehm also oversees the Nebraska men's and women's basketball programs and the Husker soccer program. He also played a major role in the athletic department's negotiations for its contract extension with IMG College Sports. To date, it is the largest multi-media rights contract in college athletics.

Boehm has also played an integral role in the creation of Nebraska’s new practice facilities for men’s and women’s basketball at the Devaney Center, along with the preliminary planning for the new Haymarket Arena in downtown Lincoln, which is scheduled to open as the new home for Husker basketball in 2013-14.

Boehm has worked tirelessly with Fox Sports Net and the Big 12 Conference to provide the men's basketball team with an extensive television package each of the past six seasons.

Under Boehm's guidance, the men’s and women’s basketball teams have combined for 11 postseason appearances in the past seven years, including the women’s first NCAA Sweet 16 bid in school history in 2010. The 2009-10 Husker women also claimed the school’s first Big 12 regular-season title and became the first men’s or women’s team in Big 12 history to complete a perfect regular season (29-0). The NU women also tied the Big 12 record by opening the season with a 30-game winning streak before finishing with a 32-2 record and a final No. 4 ranking in the NCAA’s official RPI.

Overall, the Husker women have established a school record by making seven consecutive postseason tournament appearances under Coach Connie Yori, the 2010 Big 12 and national coach of the year.

The women also enjoyed a record-breaking season at the Devaney Center turnstiles, ranking seventh nationally with a school-record 7,390 fans per game in 2009-10. Nebraska averaged a Big 12-best 11,383 fans per game in conference play, and enters 2010-11 with seven consecutive crowds of 10,000 or more and a 20-game home winning streak.

Boehm's efforts to enhance NU's gameday atmosphere were not restricted to the basketball programs. He was instrumental in conceptualizing and developing the Husker Nation Pavilion, which quickly became the premier pregame event around home football games.

Boehm also took the lead role in obtaining First National Bank and Ameritas as premier sponsors for the Nebraska Athletic Department for a combined deal worth more than $7 million over a three-year period. First National Bank and Ameritas joined ALLTEL, Pepsi and adidas as premier corporate sponsors for Husker athletics.

Boehm held the same position at Pittsburgh from 1997 to 2003. Boehm assisted in the rise of the Panthers' basketball program with the men's team posting back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. During construction of the Panthers’ new athletic facilities, Boehm played a central role in Pitt's athletic teams moving to the UPMC Sports Performance Complex, Heinz Field and the Petersen Events Center.

Boehm served as interim athletic director at Pittsburgh for nearly five months before coming to Nebraska. During that time, he hired new men's (Jamie Dixon) and women's basketball (Agnus Berenato) and soccer (Sue-Moy Chin) head coaches for the Panther program. Under Dixon's direction, the Panthers have advanced to eight straight NCAA Tournaments, while Berenato has rejuvenated the women's program with three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2007 to 2009.

Boehm also spent five years as associate executive director of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He directed and managed a 125-member fund-raising committee of Arizona business people responsible for generating more than $4.5 million in cash and in-kind partnerships. Previously he spent four years as associate executive director and public relations director of the Sun Bowl from 1987 to 1991.

Born in Grand Island, Boehm earned his bachelor's degree in communications from Kansas State in 1984 and added a master's degree in sports management from St. Thomas (Fla.) University in 1985. Boehm and his wife, the former Janelle Broderick of Minot, N.D., have three boys, Broderick, Christian and Lukas John.

yOUNG HUSKERS HOpE TO CONTINUE CLIMB IN 2011Mary Kate Bird has battled her share of

individual adversity during her collegiate career.

Nebraska’s lone senior was pushing for a lineup spot at the Big 12 Championships before illness knocked her out of contention at the final regular-season tournament in 2008.

In 2009, Bird was in the midst of a sensational sophomore campaign when a wrist injury again kept her out of Nebraska’s Big 12 lineup.

As a junior in 2010, Bird played solid golf and provided leadership on and off the course for a Husker team that continued improving throughout the spring. She made her first career appearance at the Big 12 Championships, but had to battle relatively severe back pain at the tournament.

Despite the pain, Bird stayed in the lineup and helped the Huskers to an eighth-place team finish - two spots better than the team’s spot in the final standings in 2009.

Now, as Bird enters her final season at Nebraska as the Huskers’ lone senior, she is hoping to have her healthiest and most successful season in Lincoln.

“Mary Kate has had some ups and downs like all golfers do, but she has kept a consistent attitude and approach,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “We are going to need her steady presence and her leadership this season if we are going to be successful.”

Bird enters her senior year with a team-leading 67 career rounds of experience, while producing a solid 77.54 career stroke average. In 2008-09, Bird led the Huskers with a team-best 76.68 average.

“Mary Kate is a proven performer on the course, and she is also an outstanding person off the course,” Krapfl said. “We hope she has a great senior season, and all of our younger players are going to try and play their best golf around her.”

Although the Kansas City, Mo., native is the Huskers’ lone senior, juniors Madeleine Sheils and Kayla Knopik will add experience in the heart of NU’s lineup.

Sheils, a native of Boise, Idaho, enjoyed a breakthrough sophomore season for the Huskers in 2009-10. Her 76.35 stroke average ranked as the third-best by an NU sophomore in history.

A two-time NGCA Scholastic All-American, Sheils just missed All-Big 12 honors on the course by finishing in a tie for 11th at the conference championships in Norman, Okla., in April.

Sheils was one of only two Huskers - along with departed senior JC Stevenson - to play in all 31 rounds for Nebraska a year ago, and she enters her junior season with 49 career rounds of collegiate experience.

“Maddie has an outstanding work ethic and a perfectionist attitude,” Krapfl said. “She wants to do her best at everything, and that allows her to improve on a daily basis. Last year, that enabled her to cut nearly seven shots off her stroke average from her freshman season.”

While the Huskers probably can’t expect a similar jump in 2010-11 from Sheils, Krapfl thinks Sheils still has plenty of room for improvement.

“Maddie’s understanding of the game continues to grow and she has matured in her approach on the course,” Krapfl said. “I’m confident that will continue to happen this season, and she will have another great season.”

Knopik produced a breakthrough of her own in her third season in the Husker program in 2009-10. After competing in just six rounds in her first two years at NU, Knopik came on strong in the spring and earned a lineup spot at the 2010

Mary Kate Bird returns to lead a young Nebraska lineup as the Huskers’ lone senior in 2010-11. Bird has been a regular contributor in NU’s lineup the last three seasons and produced three top-20 tournament finishes in 2009-10.

Big 12 Championships. For the season, the Papillion, Neb., native finished

with a solid 78.22 stroke average while competing in 18 rounds. She tied for 39th at the Big 12 Championships, and produced a career-best tie for 14th at the BYU at Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah.

“Kayla has made some major improvements in her first three years in our program, and those really began to show on the course late last season,” Krapfl said. “She has put in a ton of work and has had a great attitude, and it was fun to see her prove herself on the course last year.”

Knopik, who cut 4.61 shots off her stroke average from her redshirt freshman campaign, heads into her junior season with a chance at making more strides.

“In a lot of ways, I think Kayla just began to tap into her potential last year,” Krapfl said. “She has begun to manage her game better, while also starting to learn to take it to the course. We hope to see more improvements from her this season.”

A third junior will seek her own breakout campaign in 2010-11. Carolyn Schorgl has seen limited action in her first two years at Nebraska. Last season, Schorgl competed in 11 rounds outside of NU’s lineup, after seeing seven rounds of playing time as a true freshman in 2008-09.

“Carolyn is really competitive and has pushed all of our players in practice the past two seasons,” Krapfl said.

Schorgl has been a leader for the Huskers off the course in her first two years as well, producing nearly a perfect GPA while earning one of Nebraska’s prestigious Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Awards for her contributions in the community.

Krapfl added a fourth junior to the mix with the summer transfer of Katie Keiser into the program. The Gothenburg, Neb., native and 2007 Nebraska Class C High School state champion spent her first two seasons at Winthrop.

Nebraska’s three-player freshman class, which includes Katelyn Wright, Remylee Molyneux and Steffi Neisen, has the potential to make an instant impact.

Wright, a second generation Husker golfer, is one of the most accomplished players in the history of Nevada high school golf.

The daughter of two-time All-Big Eight perfomer Shelly

Godeken (1983, 1984), Wright became just the second player in Nevada history to win four consecutive individual state titles. In 2009, she won the class 2A state crown at Incline High School by 26 strokes with a two-under-par 142 over two rounds. In 2008, she won the title by 28 strokes.

On the junior circuit, Wright was a four-time qualifier for the Callaway Junior World Championships and a three-time member and two-time team captain of the Junior America’s Cup team. She was also the 2008 Nevada Junior Amateur champion and was the runner-up at the 2008 Nevada Women’s Amateur.

“Katelyn is an outstanding young lady who is very mature and a born leader,” Krapfl said. “She has all of the characteristics that we want in a student-athlete at Nebraska.”

Both of Wright’s parents are Nebraska graduates, and her mother was a collegiate teammate of Krapfl. All of those factors should help ease Wright’s transition to life in Lincoln and collegiate golf.

Molyneux will also bring a world of experience to the Husker program as a freshman. One of the top junior golfers in California, Molyneux was the Ventura County Golfer of the Year at Oaks Christian High School.

“Remy is coming to Nebraska with a very diverse background having traveled to and lived in several countries,” Krapfl said. “She is really starting to come into her own on the course. She has the potential to be a tremendous player for us.”

Neisen completes the talented Husker freshman class. The New Prague, Minn., native was one of the top junior golfers in Minnesota. A six-year varsity starter and six-time All-Missota Conference selection, Neisen was the Class AAA (state’s largest) runner-up in 2009. She also competed at the 2008 USGA Publinks Championship and produced top-10 finishes in multiple AJGA, Pepsi Little People and Minnesota Amateur Championships.

“Steffi is a great student with outstanding character who has natural leadership qualities,” Krapfl said. “She has a solid all-around game with outstanding fundamentals. She is also extremely competitive and will never give up. She is going to do everything she can to be successful, and to help the team succeed.”

Nebraska’s three freshmen, along with transfer Katie Keiser, will try to help fill the void left by departed seniors JC Stevenson and Charlotte Wendner. Stevenson, who tied for 15th at the 2010 Big 12 Championships, finished with the fourth-best career stroke average in school history (77.47), while her 136 career rounds ranked fifth in the NU record book. The Grand Island, Neb., native was also the third four-time NGCA Scholastic All-American in school history. Wendner earned All-Big 12 honors by tying for 10th at the 2009 Big 12 Championships, and added an 18th-place Big 12 finish in 2008. The three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 pick was also a two-time NGCA Scholastic All-American. Wendner, a native of Bjarred, Sweden, competed in 95 rounds during her four-year Husker career. “JC and Charlotte both had successful careers on the course and in the classroom for us the past four years,” Krapfl said. “I think this class of newcomers has a chance to really make an impact and give us more depth than we had a year ago.” Nebraska’s blend of experienced players and talented newcomers will be challenged by an outstanding schedule that tees off at its own Chip-N Club Invitational at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club, Sept. 13-14. After shooting for their sixth Chip-N Club title in the past eight seasons, the Huskers head to Lawrence, Kan., for the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational (Sept. 27-28). NU makes its first trip to Columbia, Mo., since the 2003 Big 12 Championships to compete in the Johnie Imes Invitational (Oct. 4-5), before heading south to the Dale McNamara Invitational (Oct. 11-13) in Owasso, Okla. The Huskers close the fall campaign three weeks later at the Alamo Invitational (Oct. 31-Nov. 2). Nebraska opens the spring at the Kiawah Island Women’s Intercollegiate (Feb. 20-22), before traveling to Las Vegas for the UNLV Spring Invite (March 7-9). The Huskers head west again for the BYU at Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah (March 21-22) and the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz. (March 25-26), before making a return trip to Columbia, Mo., for the Big 12 Championships (April 22-24). The Huskers will be seeking their 12th NCAA Regional bid since 1994 when they head to Missouri for the second time in 2010-11. In fact, Nebraska had played in Columbia, Mo., only two times since 1995. NCAA Regional competitions will be held in Notre Dame, Ind. (Central), Seattle, Wash. (West), or Daytona Beach, Fla. OUTLOOK (2010-11) The lone senior on Nebraska’s 2010-11 roster, Mary Kate Bird will try to lead the Huskers back into NCAA regional competition in her final year at Nebraska. A three-year regular in the NU lineup, Bird owns a 77.54 career stroke average over 67 rounds. A two-time academic All-Big 12 selection and a leader for the Huskers in the community, Bird’s career on the course has been hampered at times by injury and illness. “Mary Kate has shown that she can play at a really high level during her career,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “She is an intelligent player with solid fundamentals. She has worked hard to continue to improve her game, and I think that the experience she has gained while also facing adversity is going to help our team this season.”

JUNIOR (2009-10) Bird produced another solid season with a 77.04 stroke average and four top-25 tournament finishes. The Kansas City, Mo., native was relatively healthy throughout the season and competed in her first Big 12 Championships, after missing the conference tournament her first two seasons with illness and injury. She tied for 55th (82-79-82-243) at the Big 12 Championships in Norman, Okla., battling a back injury throughout the tournament. Before the injury, Bird had a strong spring, including a tie for 17th with a season-best 222 (71-73-78) at the UNLV Spring Invitational, March 8-10. She followed with a tie for 24th (74-78-77-229) at NU’s Northern Migration in Florence, Ariz., March 15-17, before producing a season-best tie for ninth (75-76-73-224) at the BYU at Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah, March 22-23. She wrapped up regular-season play by tying for 36th (77-74-79-230) at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, April 10-11. Bird opened the season by tying for 12th (77-75-71-223) at NU’s Chip-N Club Invite. She added a tie for 34th with a 236 (79-76-81) at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Highlands Ranch, Colo., Sept. 21-23. She notched a tie for 48th (79-83-73-235) to help the Huskers to a second-place finish in the 20-team Heather Farr Memorial in Erie, Colo., Oct. 5-6. She did not play in NU’s final two tournaments of the fall, then opened the spring season by tying for 55th (80-76-82-238) at the UCF Challenge.

SOpHOMORE (2008-09) Bird rose to the top of the Husker lineup as a sophomore in 2008-09, after serving as a part-time starter as a true freshman. But a wrist injury suffered in the final regular-season tournament prevented her from competing at the 2009 Big 12 Championships. Before injuring her wrist in the first round of the Lady Buckeye Spring Invite, April 18, Bird was NU’s leader, finishing with a team-best 76.88 season stroke average - better than a three-stroke per round improvement from 2007-08. Bird opened the season by finishing second with a career-best 215 to lead NU to the Chip-N Club Invite title. Her season-opening round tied her then-career best with a 70, before adding rounds of 72 and 73 to finish the 54-hole event at one-under-par. She added a tie for ninth at the 19-team Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., where she notched a career-best 68 in the opening round. She finished with a three-round score of 217. Bird tied for 14th with a 234 (80-77-77) at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invite, helping the Huskers tie for first at the end of regulation. She added another top-25 finish and her second top-10 effort of the year with a tie for eighth (72-74-76-222) at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, Feb. 22-24. Bird entered the final round of the 43-team tournament in a tie for first. She tied for 32nd (81-79-78-238) at the McHaney/Morehead Invite, and tied for 40th (230) as NU’s No. 2 finisher at the UNLV Spring Invitational. She settled for a tie for 51st (76-75-86-236) at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate late in the fall, and managed a tie for 60th (242) in rugged conditions at the Aztec Spring Invitational.

FRESHMAN (2007-08) Bird battled for immediate playing time as a freshman, competing in six rounds in the lineup, while adding nine individual rounds. She was scheduled to play in NU’s lineup at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invite, but withdrew with an illness. She tied for 15th (229) at the BYU Dixie Classic, which included an opening-round 74 and a second-round 75. Her finish in Utah followed a season-best 225 at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz. She notched a season-best with a two-under par 70 in the final round to finish in a tie for 25th. Bird earned a spot in NU’s lineup at the Central District Invite to open the spring, finishing

in 72nd place (264). In her first career tournament, Bird competed as an individual at NU’s Chip-N Club Invite, finishing 53rd (241). She earned her first lineup spot at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Invite in Kiawah Island, S.C., where she tied for 55th (239) to help the Huskers to a runner-up finish.

HIGH SCHOOL/AMATEUR One of the top 100 golfers in the 2007 class, Bird won the AJGA qualifier in Wichita, Kan., and placed second at the 2006 Calloway PGA Junior Series (71-75-146) in Des Moines, Iowa. She won the IJGT Fitness and Golf Westin Kierland Classic in 2007, while also winning the IJGT at Daufuskie Island and the IJGT at Savannah Harbor in 2006. She captured the title at the 2006 Four-State (Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri) competition as a member of Missouri’s five-player team. At St. Teresa’s Academy, Bird won the 2006 Missouri state title, closing with a 69. She finished with a 74.4 stroke average on the year. She helped the Stars to state tourney bids in 2004 and 2005. A two-time district champion and the 2006 Kansas City Player of the Year, Bird earned all-state honors in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and was a four-time all-district pick. She also qualified for the 2007 USGA Women’s Amateur Championships.

pERSONAL The daughter of Jim and Debby Bird, Mary Kate was born Feb. 21, 1989 in Kansas City, Mo. She has a younger brother, David, and a younger sister, Madalyne. Mary Kate is a business administration major. She earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors in 2009, amd a second-team pick in 2010. OUTLOOK (2010-11) After producing a breakout sophomore season, Madeleine Sheils returns for her junior year as an anchor in the Husker lineup. teams (track and golf, 2009), while adding six individual state crowns (four in golf, two in track). Wright was a first-team Class 2A all-state pick as a point guard on the Incline basketball team. She was an all-region selection, team MVP and earned four basketball letters. She also lettered three times in track, where she helped Incline to the 2009 Class 2A state team title. Wright scored 36 points for the Highlanders, claiming a state title as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team, while adding runner-up honors in the 400, 800 and 4x100-meter relay. As a sophomore in 2008, Wright was named the track team’s MVP after helping the 4x100-meter relay capture a state title, while adding a runner-up finish as a member of the 4x400-meter relay. Off the course, Wright was the 2009-10 Incline Student Body President and served as the junior class vice president. She was also a member of the National Honor Society.

BIG 12 CONFERENCEThe Big 12 Conference has established a consistent level of national success on the field and in the

classroom as it enters its 15th season in 2010-11. Since it began play in 1996-97, the conference can boast 38 team crowns and 440 individual NCAA Championships.

In basketball, six women’s teams have advanced to their respective Final Fours in the past eight seasons. Nebraska Coach Connie Yori was a unanimous choice for National Coach-of-the-Year honors, while Husker forward Kelsey Griffin gave the conference a consensus women’s basketball All-American for the 10th straight season. Griffin also won the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for her exceptional commitment to success on the court, in the classroom and the community.

Nebraska rolled to the regular-season conference title with the first undefeated season (29-0) by a men’s or women’s team in league history before being one of four league school’s to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16, including Final Four qualifiers Baylor and Oklahoma.

Nebraska also led the Big 12 in conference attendance last year, attracting more than 11,000 fans per game for its eight home contests, helping the league lead the nation in women’s basketball attendance for the 11th straight season.

On the men’s side, nine conference schools have reached the Final Four in the past eight years, and six teams have reached the regional finals in the past three seasons.

Big 12 squads enjoyed a strong year across the board in 2009-10. Oklahoma State won the NCAA men’s cross country title while Texas captured the national championship in men’s swimming and diving. Texas A&M secured men’s and women’s outdoor track and field championships, and the Big 12 had the No. 1 team in the nation at some point during the 2009-10 season in nine different sports.

Five Big 12 volleyball teams, including perennial national power Nebraska, competed in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Championships in 2010, the first time that has happened in conference history. The Big 12 also had a school play for the BCS National Championship (Texas) for the seventh season. Oklahoma finished second nationally at the NCAA women’s gymnastics finals - an all-time high for the Big 12 - while Oklahoma State placed second at the men’s golf championship. Iowa State was third at the NCAA wrestling championships and the Big 12 also placed a team in the College World Series in both softball (Missouri) and baseball (Oklahoma).

The individual honors also continued, as Jenny Barringer (Colorado) earned The Bowerman Award, presented for the first time to the most outstanding collegiate women’s track and field athlete. In fact, all three women’s finalists were from the Big 12. Caroline Hedwall (Oklahoma State) was named the recipient of the Honda Sports Award as the nation’s top female golfer after capturing the NCAA individual title. Lisa Koll (Iowa State) earned the Honda Award as the top collegiate female athlete in track and field.

The Big 12 has had four Heisman Trophy winners in its 14-year history. In 2008, the Big 12 established a high-water mark, as for the first time in the 74-year history of the Heisman four of the top five vote-getters hailed from the same conference, including award-winner Sam Bradford (Oklahoma). The league followed that recognition with two of the top five finalists, including Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, in 2009.

During the past six seasons a total of 16 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the conference, including each of the past 13 seasons. The Big 12 leads all conferences with its seven appearances in BCS title games. Seven league squads have played for the football national championship in the last 10 years with berths in 17 BCS games overall.

The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

Sarah Pavan (Nebraska) earned countless accolades for her work away from competition, being named the Academic All-America of the Year for all sports in both 2006-07 and 2007-08. She was also named recipient of the prestigious 2006-07 Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year, the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed to earn the accolade.

Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards.

Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 249 scholars have received over $1.6 million in postgraduate financial aid.

The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, swimming and diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

In 2010-11, conference schools include Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 46 million people and television households in 18 of the top 100 markets within its geographic footprint.

The conference conducts championships for 19 of its 21 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12 football championship game earns the league’s berth into the Bowl Championship Series.

In its first 14 years, the conference has distributed more than $1.2 billion to its 12 member institutions. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

11 NCAA REGIONAL AppEARANCES

2010-11 NEBRASKA WOMEN’S GOLF16

A four-time NGCA Scholastic All-American and three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 pick, JC Stevenson closed her career by tying for 15th at the 2010 Big 12 Championships. Stevenson, a native of Grand Island, Neb., produced 22 career top-20 tournament finishes, including a Nebraska regional record score of 220 to finish 14th at the 2008 NCAA Central Regional.

HUSKERS STAy FOCUSED ON IMpROVING IN 2010 The Nebraska women’s golf team continued on the path of improvement in 2009-10, just missing a return trip to an NCAA regional appearance. Although the Huskers missed out on an NCAA berth for the second straight season, a young and talented nucleus of players emerged midway through the season. Madeleine Sheils produced a breakout sophomore campaign that culminated with a tie for 11th at the 2010 Big 12 Championships at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., April 23-25. The native of Boise, Idaho, fired three strong rounds of 75, 76 and 74 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 225 to help the Huskers to an eighth-place team finish. A two-place improvement from the 2009 campaign. Individually, Sheils finished with a 76.35 stroke average on the season while playing in all 31 rounds for the Huskers. Her season-long performance represented nearly a seven-stroke improvement per round over her freshman campaign, when she finished at 83.17 over 18 rounds. Sheils, who finished 58th at the 2009 Big 12 Championships, shaved 28 strokes off her Big 12 Tournament effort from her freshman season. “Maddie really had a good season from several perspectives,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “Her work ethic and focus were excellent, and I really think that she is just tapping into her potential. She kept improving her game from start to finish as a sophomore, and we hope she can continue to do that at Nebraska over the next two seasons.” Fellow sophomore Kayla Knopik also played well at the Big 12 Tournament, finishing in a tie for 39th (235) among the 60 players in the field in her first championship appearance. “Kayla really played some great golf late in the season,” Krapfl said. “She has been so persistent in her work habits the past couple years. She just kept plugging away and made the most of her opportunities late in the year. I was really proud of the way she played for us, and I think she has a good future in the game as well.” Knopik, a third-year player from Papillion, Neb., made her first career appearance in the NU lineup to open the spring season at the UCF Challenge. She contributed to NU’s team score by opening the tournament with a 78 and finished in a tie for 67th at 241. After competing as an individual and tying for 47th (80-79-76-235) as Nebraska played host to the Northern Migration in Florence, Ariz., March 15-17, Knopik cracked NU’s lineup again at the BYU at Entrada Classic. She provided a breakthrough performance in Utah by tying for 14th with a career-best 230 (77-75-78) while helping the Huskers to a third-place team finish. She earned another spot in the NU lineup at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in early April, before representing the Huskers at the Big 12 Championships. For the season, Knopik produced a 78.22 stroke average over 18 rounds for a 4.61 stroke per round improvement over her redshirt freshman campaign. “I think Maddie and Kayla really show the kinds of gains you can make if you just keep working and believe in yourself,” Krapfl said. “Golf is not easy. It will challenge you both mentally and physically, but if you can keep your confidence in yourself and your game and keep swinging away and chipping away on a daily basis, you are going to succeed.”

While Nebraska’s 2010 sophomores made dramatic gains on the course, senior JC Stevenson continued her career-long improvement with another outstanding season. Stevenson, a four-year starter in the Husker lineup, produced the best Big 12 Championship performance of her career by tying for 15th (75-74-77-226). It was her second straight top-20 finish at the Big 12 Tournament and represented the 22nd top-20 showing of her Nebraska career. Not only did she improve her placing at the Big 12 Championships all four years at Nebraska, she also improved her season stroke average each of her four seasons. As a senior, the Grand Island, Neb., native produced one of the top-five stroke averages in school history with a 75.84 while playing all 31 rounds in the NU lineup. Stevenson’s senior season average marked more than a three stroke improvement from her freshman campaign, while her career 77.47 stroke average ranked among the top five players in Nebraska history. In addition to her success on the course, Stevenson also became just the third four-time NGCA Scholastic All-American in Husker history, while earning first-team academic All-Big 12 honors on three occasions. “JC was our most consistent and dependable player over the past several seasons,” Krapfl said. “Even though she had one of the best freshman seasons in school history to start her career, she continued to improve each day at Nebraska. She was also an excellent student and represented our program well in the classroom.” Fellow senior Charlotte Wendner also capped an award-winning career on and off the course at Nebraska in 2009-10. An All-Big 12 performer with a 10th-place finish at the conference tournament in 2009, Wendner finished with a 77.64 stroke average over 28 rounds as a senior. Like Stevenson, Wendner improved her season stroke average each of her four years in NU’s lineup. A strong performer in the classroom as well, Wendner was a two-time NGCA Scholastic All-American and a three-time academic All-Big 12 selection. Mary Kate Bird continued to solidify NU’s lineup as a junior. The Kansas City, Mo., native produced a trio of top-20 finishes, including a tie for ninth with a 224 at the BYU at Entrada Classic in the spring and a tie for 12th with a 223 at the Chip-N Club Invitational to open the season at Wilderness Ridge. She added a season-best 222 to tie for 17th at the UNLV Spring Invitational. Erin Sharpee also made an impact for the Huskers in her first season, posting an impressive 77.00 stroke average - the second-best by an NU freshman in history. Sharpee, a native of Green Bay, Wis., notched three top-20 finishes, including a tie for 15th (224) to open her career at the Chip-N Club Invitational, before tying for 11th (225) at the Heather Farr Memorial. Her final-round 68 at Heather Farr in Erie, Colo., was the best round by a Husker all season and just one stroke off the NU school record. “Our players were committed to improving themselves and their games, and I think we made some good strides throughout the year,” Krapfl said. “We expect that to continue into next season.”

Instruction, a sub-component of the tutorial program, provides targeted group review sessions to help ease the transition to college academics while improving study strategies and building academic self-esteem.

STUDy HALLThere are two facets to the study hall program at Nebraska. Student-athletes either attend a structured study hall, typically two hours in length held four days a week, or have flex time where they study a specific number of hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. Weekly study hall reports are provided to the coaching staff.

MENTORINGMany student-athletes meet with a mentor on a weekly basis to assist in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors collect syllabi, gather and report academic progress information and teach academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTSAssessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach to determine student strengths and areas for improvement. Results allow academic counselors to develop a personalized academic support program and to determine if more in-depth testing is warranted. When additional assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined that a student-athlete has a learning disability, appropriate accommodations are made through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

MULTI-CULTURAL PROGRAMSDesigned to enhance cultural awareness, staff members concentrate efforts on issues of transition, adjustment and retention for students of color, international students and women. These support programs include Ladies First, International Night and Your Degree First. Your Degree First is a program designed to assist, motivate and promote minority student-athletes in pursuing the degree of their choice.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATIONThe academic staff coordinates New Student-Athlete Orientation to help newcomers adjust to the multiple demands of being a college student-athlete. Presentations are made by academic counselors, compliance officials, NU faculty and administrators, business/community professionals and student-athletes.

PERSONAL COUNSELINGStudent-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCESStudent-athletes enjoy a new state-of-the art computer lab and technology center with nearly 60 computers and professional supervision. Laptops are also available during team travel. Student-athletes have the benefit of ongoing education and assistance from a full-time computer technician.

The conference’s 100-plus years of history, strong tradition of competitive intercollegiate athletic programs, vast and passionate alumni base, and consistent leadership in innovations position the Big Ten and its entire community firmly on the Big Stage.

The Big Ten has sustained a comprehensive set of shared practices and policies that enforce the priority of academics and emphasize the values of integrity, fairness and competitiveness in all aspects of its student-athletes’ lives, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that each individual has the opportunity to live a Big Life.

BIG TEN CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS• Big Ten universities provide approximately $100 million in direct financial aid to more

than 8,500 men and women student-athletes who compete for 25 championships.

• Conference institutions sponsor broad-based athletic programs with more than 270 teams. Other than the Ivy League, the Big Ten has the most broad-based athletic programs in the United States.

• Big Ten universities are members of the nation’s only conference whose constituency is entirely composed of institutions that are members of the Association of American Universities (AAU), a prestigious association of major academic and research institutions in the United States and Canada.

• Big Ten fans are some of the nation’s most supportive, with more than 8.7 million patrons attending conference home contests during the 2008-09 seasons for football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball alone.

• Over the last 31 seasons, the conference has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 nationally in football, men’s basketball and wrestling attendance.

• Big Ten institutions have more than 4.2 million living alumni and over 300,000 undergraduate students attending their universities.

• Based on the U.S. Census projected population for 2010, the eight-state Big Ten region accounts for 68,056,353 people, which ranks second only to the Big East and ahead of the ACC, SEC, Pac-10 and Big 12.
