Early Season Schedule Key To 2010-11 You’ll oft en hear coaches stress the importance of getti ng a team to play their best basketball down the stretch of the season. However that’s not what you’ll hear Lewis women’s basketball head coach Lisa Carlsen say. The previous two seasons the Flyers advanced to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Semifi nals only to lose late in the game to the eventual conference champion. Both years it was easy to make a case for Lewis as one of the best eight teams in the region at the end of the season. However both years early season non-conference in-region losses hampered Lewis’ NCAA hopes. So for the 2010-11 squad the goal is to both fi nish strong and start strong, and leave no doubt as to their place as one of the best teams in the region. “We’ve talked a lot about the importance of the non-conference schedule,” Carlsen said. “We want to put ourselves in a positi on to be ranked when those fi rst region rankings come out. We have a vet-eran group so there’s no reason we shouldn’t go out and play quality games out of the gate to fi nd out where we’re at.” The veteran group Carlsen refers to starts with forward Jenny Turpel and point guard Kady Cur-rin. Both have been in the starti ng lineup since their freshman year. While known more for her ability to distribute than score, Currin can hurt opposing defense who forget about her. She ranks fourth in school history in 3-point percent-age (40.0 percent) and last season drained 45.3 percent of her att empts. “Kady has a great understanding of our system and how to distribute the basketball, especially in key situa-ti ons,” Carlsen said. “Being voted by her teammates as a team captain shows the confi dence they have in her ability to lead.” Currin has been fi nding Turpel down on the block for three years now. Turpel is a two-ti me Daktronics All-Region performer and enters the season seventh all-ti me in scoring at Lewis with 1,359 points. Another 500-point season for Turpel would put her second all-ti me in scoring at Lewis. The forward from Johnsburg, Ill. has improved her rebounding, scoring and free-throw percentage each year. “Jen has a great supporti ng cast this year, she has improved her consistency from outside the paint and become a great, well rounded player” Carlsen said. “Much of what we do will sti ll be centered around her because she is our go to player. But my hope she won’t have to work as hard this year because we will have more opti ons and teams can’t solely key on her.” Opposing defenses have keyed in on senior Kelly Monaco for three seasons. She ranks sixth all-ti me in 3-pointers with 136. The 71 she made in 2008-09 ti ed for second all-ti me in a single season. Carlsen believes Monaco will return to 2008-09 form this year. “With the way Kelly has been shooti ng in practi ce, I don’t know if there is another outside shooter in the league bett er than her,” Carlsen said. “Opponents bet-ter know where she’s at because if she gets a look, it’s going up, and right now, it’s going in.” Forward Carol Kruckman rounds out Lewis’ four-member senior class. “I know Carol is going to be in the right place at the

right ti me and always work hard,” Carlsen said. “Her hard work has put herself in positi on to help us this year. She’s the one of the stron-gest on the team and can be physical on the low block.” Kruckman and Turpel make up a deep frontcourt for Lewis. Redshirt junior Devon Carbaugh returns with two years of experience in the starti ng lineup. “Dev does all the litt le things that someti mes don’t show up in the box score,” Carlsen said. “She has tremendous respect from her

teammates as indicated by being voted a captain. This year I’d like to see her be more consistent shooti ng from the outside. If she can do that she could keep things open in the middle a litt le more for our low post players.’ Junior Lory Shaw was a major contributor last season for Lewis. The 6-2 forward played in every game for Lewis, averaging 15.5 minutes a game, but saw more ti me down the stretch. She averaged 22.7 minutes a game in Lewis’ three GLVC Tournament contests, scoring eight points per game.

“In my mind, Lory is a starter,” Carlsen said. “I think she will pick right up from the success

she found late last year and be a force in the middle for us.” Another Flyer looking to build off the success she had last year is guard Labren-thia Murdock. The 5-9 guard started fi nal

18 games last year and showed impressive quickness with the ball. “Labrenthia is tough to guard one-on-one off the dribble,” Carlsen said. “I believe her outside shooti ng has improved and I think she has a bett er understanding of what I want from her this year.” The Flyers have two transfers in the back-

court this year. Sophomore Rachel Woodruff redshirted last season aft er arriving for the second semester. Junior Madeline Kish comes

to Lewis aft er two seasons at Eastern Illinois. “Rachel’s a very skilled player and will be a quality guard off the bench,” Carlsen said.

“Madeline can shoot the three and has a good understanding of the college game.” The duo provides depth in the back-court while redshirt freshman Lauren Mead and sophomore Sam Rinehart will see ti me in the frontcourt. The increased depth combined with an experienced nucleus means expectati ons are high in Romeoville. “The core of this team was here last year and they know that the last month didn’t keep us out of the tournament, it was the fi rst month,” Carlsen said. “Our approach isn’t a ton diff erent entering the year, but the seniors have

a very clear picture of what it will take to put themselves in the best positi on to play in March.” That road to March starts in November. Following exhibiti ons at Division I foes Valparaiso and Western Michigan, Lewis opens the regular season on Nov. 12 at Saginaw Valley State. The contest is one of four non-conference in-region games to start the year.

The 2010-11 season is the fourth for Lisa Carlsen as head women’s basketball coach and Lewis’ senior woman administrator. Carlsen guided the Flyers to their second consecuti ve appearance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Semifi nals in 2010. Lewis upset Southern Indiana in the quarterfi nals of the GLVC Tournament by handing the Screaming Eagles their only home loss of the season. Lewis’ season ended with a loss to eventual GLVC Champion Drury in the fi nal seconds of the semifi nals. The Flyers fi nished with an 18-12 overall record and 12-6 conference mark. Forward Jenny Turpel was named to the Daktronics All-Region First Team, All-GLVC First Team and All-GLVC Tournament Team. Carlsen’s squad found equal success off the court, earning the the 2009-10 Spread Your Wings Championship. Spread Your Wings is Lewis’ intra-department competi ti on measuring each team’s parti cipati on in the fi ve commitment areas (academic, athleti c, career development, personal development and service) of the NCAA/CHAMPS Lifeskills program. Due to early season ending injuries to two starters, the 2008-09 Flyers used a starti ng lineup with just one upperclassman to compile a 16-13 record and an 11-7 conference mark. Lewis shocked defending conference champion Drury in the quarterfi nals of the GLVC Tournament. The Fly-ers then batt led defending nati onal champion Northern Kentucky to overti me in the semifi nals. Jenny Turpel earned Daktronics All-Region Second Team, All-GLVC Second Team and All-GLVC Tournament Team honors. In Carlsen’s fi rst season the Flyers fi nished with a 13-13 overall mark. Her squad recorded a resounding 15-point win at eventual GLVC champion Drury and topped eventual GLIAC champion Michigan Tech by 11. Lewis also de-feated Division I foe Chicago State. Carlsen came to Lewis aft er spending three seasons as associate head coach for the women’s basketball program at Winona State. The Warriors enjoyed drasti c improvement over that span, increasing their win total and conference standing each year and emerging as one of the top teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Aft er winning only three games in 2004-05, the Warriors posted a 15-12 record in 2006-07 and fi nished ti ed for fourth in the NSIC, the team’s best conference fi nish in program history. The 2006-07 Warriors were ranked second in NCAA Division II in free throw percentage and were third in fewest turnovers per game. In additi on, the team found success in the classroom, fi nishing seventh in the nati on in team GPA. Prior to her ti me at Winona State, Carlsen worked for six seasons at the University of Nebraska-Oma-ha. She joined the women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in 1998 and was promoted to head coach in 2000. She guided the Mavericks to postseason play in 2003, posti ng the program’s best fi nish since the 1991-92 season. The Mavericks also maintained a 3.46 team GPA during Carlsen’s tenure. Carlsen’s coaching career began in 1994 when she coached College of St Mary’s (Neb.) soft ball team for four seasons. She also served in the same capacity for one year at Wayne State College (Neb.), compiling a career record of 120-51 as a soft ball coach. Carlsen played professional basketball from 1992-95 for the Nebraska Express of the Women’s Basket-ball Associati on. She was named team captain and earned a spot on the league’s all-star team in 1995. A 1992 graduate of Northwest Missouri State, Carlsen was a four-ti me all-conference basketball selecti on and an All-America scholar athlete. She also was an all-conference and all-region soft ball player. As a senior, she was named the 1992 Champion NCAA Female Athlete of the Year. She earned a master’s degree from UNO in 1994. Carlsen is originally from Earling, Iowa. She is married and has four children: Jacob (14), Zachary (10), Sam (9) and Alexis (5) and lives in Romeoville.

Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President of Lewis University since 1988, has provided leadership during a period of signifi cant growth that has seen enroll-ment increase to more than 6,000 students, while the University has received regional and even national recognition for its academic quality. During his tenure, the entire campus has been transformed through numerous construction and renovation projects, amounting to an investment of more than $135 million. Academic offerings have dramatically expanded throughout all four colleges of the University to include more than 80 undergraduate programs, 22 graduate degrees and a doctoral program (Ed.D. in Educational Leadership). Fundamental to its Mission is a spirit of association which fosters community in all teaching, learning and service.

HISTORY Founded in 1932 under the direction of the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil, Lewis began as the Holy Name Technical School, a school for boys and was established on 170 acres of farmland donated by Mi-chael and Frances Fitzpatrick of Lockport. Aviation technol-ogy became the special emphasis of instruction and the origin of today’s highly regarded Department of Aviation and Transportation Studies. During World War II, hundreds of Navy fl ight instructors were trained at Lewis. In 1952, the school

was renamed the Lewis College of Science and Tech-nology and granted its fi rst baccalaureate degrees. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers - members of a 328-year-old religious order devoted exclusively to teaching and named after Saint John Baptist de La Salle, their founder and Patron Saint of Educators – assumed direction of the institution. Today, with grow-ing enrollment, outstanding programs, experienced faculty and motivated students, Lewis University is recognized as one of the fi nest, mid-sized, compre-hensive Catholic universities in the country.

When Dan Schumacher was hired as Lewis University’s Director of Athletics in June of 2006, the Chicago native knew the heights that the Flyers Athlet-ics program could reach as a department. With great vision comes great expectations, and Schumacher and the Flyers have most certainly delivered. Since his arrival, Lewis has won fi ve regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference championships and nine GLVC Tournament championships, while making appearances in 12 NCAA Tournaments, including the men’s soccer team’s run to the ‘Final Four’ in 2009. While the Flyers have made improvements on the fi eld, the fi elds have also been improved during Schumacher’s tenure, as there has been over $500,000 worth of facility upgrades on the Romeoville campus. Schumacher helped speed up the facility upgrade timeline by forming the Varsity Club, an organized,

non-profi t fundraising arm of the Lewis University Athletic Department that supports small-scale capital improvements. Neil Carey Arena, home of both basketball and volleyball teams, has seen the most upgrades as it now features a new fl oor, scoreboards, a video board, island baskets and retractable bleachers which has increased the seating to over 1,000. Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams have directly benefi tted from Schumacher’s efforts, as the Lewis Swimming Pool now has a state-of-the-art scoring system which has allowed the program to increase its home schedule. The locker rooms in Neil Carey Arena have been remodeled and are now equipped with fl at screen tele-visions. Lewis now has the ability to video stream all of their home basketball games and volleyball matches from the Arena on www.LewisFlyers.com. Schumacher has also helped make the John F. Ken-nedy Sports Center become more ‘Flyer Friendly’, as the hallways proudly display Lewis Athletics Artwork and each offi ce has furniture that has the Lewis Flyers Athletics logo emblazoned on it. The Athletic Training room has been remodeled and now holds custom tables, cabinets, fl ooring and an ice machine. Outside the JFK Sports Center, the Lewis softball team now has new dugouts, a new press box and a custom windscreen for the outfi eld fence, while the outfi eld fence of Brennan Field, home of the Flyer baseball team, now has a custom windscreen as well. On the docket for both fi elds are brand new Daktron-ics scoreboards, which are slated to be fi nished by the 2011 season. What Schumacher is most proud of, however, is the performance of his student-athletes in the classroom. In the past three years, the graduation rate for Lewis student-athletes has risen from 60% to as high as 86%, while the Flyers’ Academic Success Rate (ASR) has peaked at a remarkable 98%, Schumacher has brought along seven new head

coaches, including women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith and men’s basketball coach Scott Trost. Smith has won two Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season championships, along with two GLVC Tourna-ment championships while losing just 17 matches in three seasons. In his second season as the head coach, Trost led the Flyers to 20 wins for just the 14th time in school history, as well as an appearance in the GLVC Tournament fi nals and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time since 2004. A 1986 Carl Sandburg High School graduate, Schum-acher was responsible for the fi nancial administration of Winona State athletics. Among his duties were marketing and promotions, development, external relations, corporate relations, facilities oversight, budgeting and NCAA compliance. Schumacher was the primary catalyst of a two-year campaign that generated $3 million, through private donations and newly developed athletics department revenue channels, for major improvements to Winona State’s soccer, football, baseball, softball and bas-ketball facilities. He also spearheaded a project that transformed a $42,000 annual corporate sponsorship program into an annual corporate/external relations program that generates $500,000 in scholarships for Winona State athletics and the WSU Foundation. Schumacher spent seven years with Conseco Finance Corporation prior to joining the Winona State staff, serving as Senior Credit Manager from 1995-98 and as Vice President from 1998-2002. He was a Branch Manager for TCF Bank and Mortgage Corpora-tion in Minneapolis from 1990-95. Schumacher earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations (business administration minor) in 1989 and a master’s degree in educational/school administra-tion in 2005, both at Winona State. As a member of the WSU football team, he garnered All-America honors and served two seasons as a team captain. Schumacher and wife Kristin are the parents of daughter Kasey (15) and sons Jack (12) and Declan (8).
