2010 WRESTLING 3

2010 OUTLOOKAfter Alex Radsky ended Davidson’s 41-year

individual championship drought at theSouthern Conference Wrestling Championshipslast season, head coach Bob Patnesky hopesthat not only will Radsky return to the NCAATournament, but that he will be joined by otherWildcats in Philadelphia.

“If we stay healthy, it could be a nice seasonfor the ‘Cats,” said Patnesky, who enters hisseventh season as Davidson’s head coach.“We’re going to have some peaks and valleys, but we just need to focus on the things that aregoing to make us better each and every day.But in the end come March, when it is all onthe line, we need to perform at our best, andhopefully we’ll have another conference cham-pion and maybe one or two more going to thenational tournament this year.”

125With the graduation of four-year starter Ben

Altman, sophomore Matt Zarth will be countedon to take his place in the starting lineup at 125pounds. Zarth saw limited action during hisfreshman campaign, going 6-9 with two pins at125 pounds, and drawing starts in a pair ofSoCon matches against Chattanooga andAppalachian State. With one-year of collegiateexperience under his belt, the Wildcats arelooking forward to a solid second-year per-formance.

“Matt Zarth is a very talented sophomore,”said Patnesky. “We expect great things fromhim. He just needs to turn the corner and focuson the things he needs to do to win at thislevel.”

133Senior Alex Radsky will continue to lead the

‘Cats on and off the mat as he looks to defendhis SoCon Championship at 133 pounds. Theleague’s coaches picked him to repeat, naminghim to the preseason All-SoCon team, andnational publications Wrestling USA Magazineand WrestlingReport.com are both predicting areturn bid to the NCAA Tournament. Radskyhas only sought to improve over the spring andsummer, qualifying for the USA WrestlingWorld Team Trials and spending six weekswith his twin-brother Vitaly in Belarus study-ing the national wrestling team.

“Alex Radsky is an extremely hard workerand sets his goals at the highest levels they canbe,” said Patnesky. “He’s looking to repeat asthe conference champion and get back to theNCAA Tournament and have a great perform-ance there. He’s definitely one of the guys theteam looks up to.”

141In 2009-10, Vitaly Radsky led the ‘Cats in

wins with 20, posted the team’s best conferencerecord at 4-1 and scored the most dual pointson the team with 57 – all career highs – butplaced second in the SoCon Tournament aftersuffering an 8-3 defeat in the championshipmatch. Radsky has dedicated himself toimproving during the offseason, attempting toqualify for the USA Wrestling World Team

Trials during the spring and spending sixweeks studying the Belarus national wrestlingteam with twin-brother Alex. Vitaly will needto be at his best in his final collegiate cam-paign, as the 141-pound weight class is amongthe most competitive in the SoCon.

“Vitaly still feels the pain of making one mis-take in the conference finals to a guy he hadbeaten before,” said Patnesky. “He works dili-gently everyday to become the best, and he isin a very competitive weight, so each andevery match he wrestles must be close to per-fection. I believe he has it in him to be a confer-ence champion, go to the national tournament, and make a little noise.”

Sophomore Scott Ray will look to competefor time on the mat in the 133-, 141-, and 149-pound classes. After starting his rookie cam-paign with a 5-8 record, an injury cut his 2009-10 season short.

“Scott is a hard worker and does the thingsthat need to be done,” said Patnesky. “He hasgreat technique and whatever weight he com-petes at, he is going to compete hard and givehis all.”

149While Ray could see time in the 149-pound

class, freshman CT Talevi will also be countedon to step up during his rookie campaign.Talevi, who hails for Roanoke, Va., placed inthe top five at the state championships duringhis junior and senior years at Cave Spring HighSchool, where he broke the career (123) andsingle-season (44) records for wins.

“CT is another hard worker,” said Patnesky.“It’s his freshman year, so we’ll have to seehow things go, but each and every time he goesout there, he is going to give his best effort.”

157The battle for the starting nod at 157 pounds

will be competitive as the 2009-10 preseasonAll-SoCon pick at 149 pounds, David DeCamp, moves up to the class. DeCamp had one of thebest starts on the team last season at 149, win-ning all eight matches against collegiate oppo-nents at the UNC Pembroke Open to placethird. But his season ended in November withan injury.

DeCamp will battle sophomore Brent Mowryfor the starting nod. Mowry went 6-9 duringhis rookie campaign before an injury ended hisseason prematurely.

“Brent Mowry has really made a commit-ment to the sport of wrestling during the off-season,” said Patnesky. “He’s really workedhard to recover from his injury last season. He’s wrestling well and it is going to be a realchallenge to see who the guy is, as we haveDavid DeCamp moving up from 149. It’s goingto be a real battle.”

165Tyler Mullen could be another one of

Davidson’s conference title contenders afterearning the No. 2 seed in the conference tour-nament at 165 pounds in 2010. An injury keptMullen off the mat until January last season,

but he gave the ‘Cats an immediate boost uponhis return, winning seven-consecutive matchesafter dropping his first two. He finished theseason with a career-best 10-7 record, includinga 3-1 mark in conference bouts. His confidencehas only risen entering the 2010-11 season.

“Tyler Mullen is a very athletic guy withvery explosive, fast-twitch muscle fibers,” saidPatnesky. “It’s his junior year, and he’s gainingmore and more confidence each year he goesalong. He can beat anybody on any given day,so he could also have a great conference tour-nament.”

174 - 184 - 197Junior Jorge Estrada, sophomore Chris

Cirenza and freshman Scott Patrick will com-pete for the starting nod at 174 pounds.

“Jorge Estrada has really made a commit-ment to the sport of wrestling this past year,”said Patnesky. “He’s really worked hard in thepreseason, and we’ve seen significant gains inhis wrestling style.”

Cirenza only saw action in four matches dur-ing his rookie campaign, all coming at 165pounds, before an injury cut his season short.

Patrick, from Ellicott City, Md., was anMIAA conference champion and MIS statechampion wrestling at the McDonogh School, breaking the school’s single-season wins record(52). He also placed third at the National PrepWrestling Championships.

“Chris is a hard worker who has also made acommitment to the sport,” said Patnesky. “ScottPatrick is a very talented kid. They’re all goingto battle for the spot and we’ll see who is goingto be the man.”

Ike Crews will look to improve in his secondseason at 184 pounds. A tremendous competi-tor, Crews dedicated himself during the offsea-son to strength and conditioning.

“Ike spent a ton of time in the weight roomthis past year and is much bigger than he waslast year,” said Patnesky. “He is a student ofthe sport and he keeps learning each and everyday. Ike is a competitor, and he’s going to fightfor seven minutes every time he steps on thatmat. The potential is there.”

285Charlie Wolff continued to improve during

his junior year, and the heavyweight is lookingto put together a career year. He returned tocampus after a summer of workouts at hislightest weight ever, and is looking to make arun in the conference tournament.

“The thing about Charlie Wolff is that hewrestles with heart, and that can take you along way in what you are doing,” saidPatnesky. “Over the summer he made alifestyle change and came in at 270 pounds, which he has never done before. In the earlytournaments we can see a significant differencein his performance. He’s really turned a cornerand really believes in himself. He wants towin.“

Jim Murphy was introduced as DavidsonCollege’s Director of Athletics in November of1995, returning to his alma mater to lead theWildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary ofintercollegiate athletics and into the next century.

Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy,54, spent 10 years as executive associate athleticdirector and chief financial officer for the GeorgiaTech Athletic Association.

An Atlanta native, Murphy played football andbaseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His

experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in itsdesire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of thesmallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools.

Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rateof 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 witha rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year.

Davidson has claimed the Southern Conference Graduation Rate Awardfor the last nine years, sharing the honor with Wofford in 1999-2000. In addi-tion, Davidson has won the SoCon's Barrett-Bonner Award, given to theschool that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on theleague’s academic honor roll, 16 times in the award's 18-year history.

“I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics andthink the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after grad-uation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercolle-giate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.”

Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued severalmajor capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have beencompleted in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium.

The construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, thenew Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and practice facilityand the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-artweight room, a new press box and additional permanent seating, all havecome during Murphy's tenure.

The 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region AthleticDirector of the Year, Murphy served two terms on the prestigious NCAADivision I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAAgovernance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committeeand formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee.

From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of theSouthern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host theNCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and alsoserved as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte.

Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committeeand Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision AthleticDirectors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force onRecruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture ofrecruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’sFiscal Responsibility Oversight Group.

A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidsonwith a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in manage-ment from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit man-ager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwickin Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public andprivate companies with up to $1 billion in assets.

Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board ofManagers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of theCharlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board ofthe Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directorsof the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League.

Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor atDavidson, and his 25-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University ofNorth Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Thomas W. Ross becameDavidson’s 17th president Aug. 1,2007, after three decades of leader-ship and public service in NorthCarolina.

Ross graduated from Davidsonin 1972. In the decade after, hegraduated with honors from theUniversity of North CarolinaSchool of Law, he taught at theUniversity’s School ofGovernment, joined a Greensboro

law firm and served for one year in Washington, D.C., as chief of staff of acongressional office.

In 1984, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Ross as Superior Court Judge,a position he held for 17 years.

In his work adjudicating felony cases, Ross became familiar with astate justice system that suffered shortcomings from uneven sentencingand a burgeoning prison population. In 1990, the N.C. Chief Justiceappointed him to chair a new Sentencing and Policy Advisory Committee. For two years the 23-member panel worked to create a structured sentenc-ing system that was eventually accepted by the legislature and became amodel for similar programs nationwide.

For his efforts, Ross received the William H. Rehnquist Award forJudicial Excellence from the National Center for State Courts. Chief JusticeRehnquist, now deceased, presented the award personally to Ross in theGreat Hall of the Supreme Court.

In 1999, North Carolina Chief Justice Burley Mitchell appointed Rossas director of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts. After runningthe North Carolina Court System for nearly two years, Ross was invitedby the trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to become theFoundation’s executivedirector. His seven years atthe Foundation involvedhim in statewide issuesand policy, advocating forlegislative reform and cre-ating coalitions of nonprof-it agencies to increase theirinfluence in public affairs.

Since becoming presi-dent of Davidson Collegein 2007, Ross has overseenan ambitious strategicassessment process, initiat-ed campus-wide discus-sions of diversity andinclusivity, and announcedthe name of The DavidsonTrust, the college’s historicfinancial aid program thatreplaced loans with grantsin all financial aid pack-ages. He established 2008-09 as the Year ofSustainability, and led thecollege’s Celebration ofHonor and Integrity in2009-10.

Ross married the for-mer Susan Donaldson in1972, and they have twochildren, Mary KathrynElkins ’01 and Thomas W.Ross, Jr. ’99.

On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 footballplayers traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson Collegeagainst Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in theSouth. The Plainsmen had massacred their first fouropponents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, andundefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup.Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 poundsless.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, out-gaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offen-sive attack through the efforts of running back A.R.“Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering

a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in

the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured theawe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the“Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature andferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notesthat Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of theDavidson team, “No other team ever put together in theseUnited States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s teamcould ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men fromNorth Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milderreferences such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.”

SOUTHERN CONFERENCEA majority of the sports at Davidson

compete in the Southern Conference, oneof the oldest conferences in the nation, which began its 89th season in 2009. Thesoccer, volleyball, cross country, track andfield, basketball, tennis, wrestling, baseballand golf programs at Davidson all partici-pate in the league.

Only the Big Ten (1896), the MissouriValley (1907) and the Pac-10 (1915) confer-ences have been around longer than theSoCon (1921). The conference currentlyconsists of 12 members in five statesthroughout the Southeast and sponsors 19varsity sports and championships, whichproduce participants for NCAAChampionships.

The Southern Conference was the first“super conference,” with charter member-ship including Alabama, Auburn andNorth Carolina. The SoCon gave birth tothe three-point shot in college basketball, has the oldest basketball tournament in thenation and was the college home of suchsporting greats as Arnold Palmer, StephenCurry, Jerry West and Charlie “ChooChoo” Justice.

Academic excellence has long been amajor part of the Southern Conference’stradition. League athletes have been recog-nized countless times on CoSIDAAcademic All-America and district teams.Eighteen Rhodes-Scholar winners havecome out of the conference, including sixfrom Davidson. Each year, the league dis-tributes at least three graduate scholar-ships, two of which were won by Wildcatsoccer players in 2004.

The Southern Conference was born onFeb. 25, 1921, in Atlanta, Ga., when 14institutions from the 30-member SouthernIntercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA)reorganized as the Southern Conference. The charter members were Alabama,Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech,Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State,North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee,Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington &Lee, and athletic competition began thatfall.

In 1922, seven schools — Florida,Louisiana State, Mississippi, SouthCarolina, the University of the South,Tulane and Vanderbilt — joined the ranks.

Since then, conference membership hasexperienced a series of membershipchanges with 42 institutions being affiliat-ed with the league. The league has under-gone two major transitions during its his-tory.

The first occurred in December of 1932.The Southeastern Conference formed outof the 23-school Southern Conferencewhen 13 members west and south of theAppalachian Mountains reorganized tohelp reduce the extensive travel demands.

In 1953, Clemson, Duke, Maryland,North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolinaand Wake Forest withdrew from the

league to form the Atlantic CoastConference, seeking to schedule a greaternumber of regular-season basketball gamesagainst local rivals.

Today, the league continues to thriveand is home to Appalachian State, Collegeof Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon,Furman, Georgia Southern, UNCGreensboro, Chattanooga, WesternCarolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008,Samford officially joined the league, bring-ing membership of the conference to 12.VMI is an associate member in the sport ofwrestling.

The SoCon currently declares champi-ons in 10 men’s sports — football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and out-door track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf — and nine women’s sports— soccer, volleyball, cross country, basket-ball, indoor and outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball.

The Southern Conference office is locat-ed in historic Beaumont Mill inSpartanburg, S.C.
