Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Th rough the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and fi nally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff .

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400,

with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class

rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits

one in seven applicants and has a four-year reten-

tion rate signifi cantly higher than the national aver-

age. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent

are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Blooms-

burg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen

fi elds.

> Degrees— Bloomsburg University off ers 63 bac-

calaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint

doctoral degree in elementary education in coop-

eration with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

> Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students

receive some form of fi nancial aid; average amount

of aid is $10,000 per year.

> Cost —About $7,223 per semester for Pennsylva-

nia residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal

plans), $11,635 for non-residents.

> Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees,

Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty,

70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72

percent of whom are tenured. Th e staff is organized

into four divisions: Academic Aff airs, Administra-

tion, Student Life and University Advancement.

> School Colors, Mascot— Th e school colors,

originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon

and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the

Husky became the school mascot when a dog

owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm.

Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

Th e university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off -campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

Th e Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. Th e central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

Th e university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

- Outlook

PREVIEW Young and talented. Th ese two words best describe the 2010-11 Bloomsburg University men’s basketball team. With six upperclassmen returning in addition to bringing in eight newcomers, fi fth-year head coach John Sanow believes that the Huskies are poised to take the next step and get back to the postseason for the fi rst time since the 2001-02 season. “We have a group of hard-working and talented young men who challenged themselves over the summer to improve their games. Th ey are ready to take the next step,” Sanow says. After missing the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East playoff s by a game last season, Sanow, his coaching staff , and players are geared to make another run at this goal. After going 12-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference, Sanow understands the expectations are high this season for a team that was so close a year ago. “Th is season our coaching staff feels the experience of our returning players along with our newcomers will prove to be a successful combination,” Sanow notes. “We were close last year. We feel the experience gained in all those close games should really help us in moving forward.” With a 20-win season and a conference championship in mind, making adjustments to replace three graduating seniors from a year ago will be a top priority for Sanow. Th e Huskies lost a big piece of last season’s off ense with the graduation of All-PSAC East second-team selection Ruben Britt. In addition to losing Britt, Bloomsburg also needs to fi ll the shoes of Adon El and Greg Elliott. Off ensively, the trio of players totaled 36 percent of the Bloomsburg scoring last season.

BACK COURT Two upperclassmen will be vying for playing time at point guard in 2010-11, with junior classmates Trevon Johnson and Jesse Betar looking to lead the off ense. Johnson fi nished second in points with 11.6 points per game and led the team with 61 steals in 26 starts last season. In 17 of his starts, Johnson scored in double fi gures. Th is year, Sanow sees Johnson playing a crucial role. “Trevon excels in an up-tempo style of play,” Sanow comments. “He can really push the ball in transition and score in the open fl oor. He also excels on the defensive end, leading our team in steals a year ago. He will be a player that the rest of the team looks to as a leader.” Betar, who played in 23 games, started 13 times a year ago. “Jesse is a good leader on and off the court,” Sanow describes. “He brings lots of experience at the

point-guard position.” Dishing out 47 assists last season and scoring in double fi gures on four diff erent occasions, Betar is the type of player that can space the fl oor with his perimeter shooting and make his teammates better with his passing skills. Also in the mix will be freshman Antoine Ellison-Love. Th e 5-9 guard averaged 16 points, fi ve assists, and fi ve steals per game as a senior at Loyalsock. “Antoine is a very quick and explosive player who also does well in the open fl oor,” Sanow says. “He does a great job at pressuring the ball defensively.” At the two wing positions, junior Jordan Wartman, freshman Kendal Smith, redshirt freshman Dontahe Jordan, redshirt freshman Lorenzo Christmas, and redshirt freshman Nasir Jones all look to play valuable roles for Sanow. Wartman, who played in 18 games last season, was a solid player off the bench. Both Jordan and Smith look to make an immediate impact as fi rst-year players, as the coaching staff has high hopes for these talented freshmen. “Dontahe gained valuable experience at practice last season as a redshirt,” Sanow states. He is a player who has good shooting and passing skills; he is athletic and is a good scorer in transition. Smith, a talented freshman from Th omas Stone High School, led his team to two state championship appearances, “Kendal is long and athletic; a young man who works very hard on his game and loves to compete.” Christmas will also try and step in during his fi rst season in maroon and gold. “Lorenzo is our best perimeter shooter; he will help signifi cantly in raising our three-point shooting percentage as a team,” Sanow comments. Bloomsburg fi nished with a .269 (84-of-312) shooting percentage from behind the arc last season. Another young player competing for time will be Nasir Jones. A redshirt freshman last season at Millersville, Jones averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds as a senior at the Franklin Learning Center. “He is very athletic and works hard on both ends of the court,” Sanow describes.

FRONT COURT Th e Huskies return plenty of talent at the forward and center positions, led by junior center Larry Webster III. Last season Webster averaged 10.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in his 26 starts, recording fi ve double-double performances. He led the Huskies with 61 blocks, placing him sixth on the all-time blocks list in program history with 95. He is just 36 blocks from breaking the all-time mark of 130 set by Lee Gump in 1996. Sanow can see Webster’s improvements during practices, knowing that he worked hard during the off season on both the off ensive and defensive sides of the ball. “Larry has worked hard to develop his back to the basket moves and his overall off ensive game,” Sanow comments. “Husky Nation will be happy to see that he is much improved off ensively and that his strengths at rebounding and shot-blocking have also been taken to another level.” After a solid sophomore season, classmate Trenton Epps also returns for the Huskies. Epps fi nished the 2009-10 season averaging 4.3 points per game. In addition, the 6-6 forward fi nished third on the team with 103 rebounds. Epps is a player that greatly improved over the summer months on both the off ensive and defensive sides of the ball. He is capable of knocking down the 15-foot jump shot and taking it strong to the basket. Junior transfer John Schwarz will make an immediate impact for the Huskies this season. A year ago, the 6-8 Schwarz led NJCAA-affi liated Harford Community College with 14 points per contest and redshirted with Division I Mount St. Mary’s during the 2008-09 season. Sanow has plenty of confi dence in Schwarz, believing he could be a player that will be getting the ball in critical situations. “John’s skill set off ensively, his intensity on the fl oor, along with his experience will make him a go-to player for this young team.” Th e lone senior on the squad, Earl Knight, will also give Sanow another versatile forward who should make an impact on both ends of the fl oor this year. Knight played in 25 games in 2009-10, recording 68 points along with 54 boards. “Earl brings a lot of energy and intensity to the fl oor,” Sanow notes. “He works hard on every play.” After redshirting last season due to injury, sophomore forward Ronnie Benson returns at forward. In the 2008-09 season, Benson averaged 7.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 21 starts. Two redshirt freshmen will also provide talent for Sanow in Armand Leaks and Moustapha Noumbissi. Leaks totaled 709 points and 850 rebounds during his playing time at Th e Shipley School. Noumbissi averaged 11.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game as a

senior at Delaware County Christian School. “Armand and Moustapha are two talented frontcourt players who are amongst the hardest workers on the team,” Sanow states. “With their work ethic and their willingness to learn, their best years are ahead of them.”

OVERALL “Th is is the best I felt since I have been here at Bloomsburg in terms of where the state of our program is at,” Sanow states. “From our coaching staff , to our upperclassmen, to our incoming recruiting class, this season has all the pieces in place for us to make a serious run at the playoff s.” In order to make that playoff push, the Huskies will have to play well during conference action. Sanow thinks that conference play will be very competitive again in 2010-11.

Nelson Field House

Th e Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home

for most of the university’s indoor athletic events.

Th e facility, constructed in 1971, recently underwent a $13.4 million dollar facelift. Among

the renovations to the fi eld house are a new bleacher system for the main gym area, a new

scoreboard, a new wrestling room on the lower level of the facility, a new and expanded press

box, dedicated locker rooms for each sport, including an expanded football locker room, im-

proved offi ce space and additional storage space. In addition the pool area has been complete-

ly renovated with improved lighting, new bleachers, new starting blocks, improved timing

system and record board.

Th e project also provided for enhancements to both the upper and lower entrances that will

showcase the awards the teams have won over the last three decades. Th e project was com-

pleted in August of 2009.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic

Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences.

Th e fi rst major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a

structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league

voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II.

Th e most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding

full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Th e

membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate.

All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which

makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. Th e league has also grown to share the

distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA,

and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level.

Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of

its teams into NCAA postseason play. Th e membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA teams and 228

individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s fi nest

from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year

as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC

Scholar-Athletes were fi rst recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the

Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni,

including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.

Coaching Staff

In 2010-11, John Sanow begins

his fi fth season of a rebuilding plan

as head coach of the men’s basketball

program at Bloomsburg. Overall,

Sanow has 21 years of experience

with previous coaching stops at the

University of Vermont along with

Division II schools Gannon University

and Pitt-Johnstown. He also spent 11

years as an assistant coach at Division

I St. Francis of Pennsylvania.

In 2009-10, Sanow had his team on

the verge of the postseason, fi nishing

one game out of the PSAC tourna-

ment with a 6-8 record in the PSAC

East and 12-14 overall.

In his fi rst season with the Hus-

kies, Sanow guided the Huskies to a

mark of 13-14, an improvement of

seven wins from the previous season

and the fi rst time since 2001-02 that

the team reached double fi gures in

wins.

Sanow won his fi rst six games as

coach of Bloomsburg and had the

team nationally ranked for the fi rst

time in several years. He also closed

out the season winning four of the

fi nal fi ve games and just missed out

on a berth in the PSAC East play-

off s. Also, the eight wins the Huskies

recorded at the Nelson Field House

were the most since the team won 10

in 2000-01.

A native of Windber, Pa., who is

well-connected in basketball in the

East, Sanow is a 1987 graduate of

Indiana (Pa.) University. After trans-

ferring from Clarion University in

1984, he led IUP in scoring and was a

Pennsylvania State Athletic Confer-

ence All-Conference First Team selec-

tion in 1986. He also set numerous

three-point shooting records for IUP.

At Vermont in 2005-06, he was

part of a new coaching staff that led

the least-experienced team in the na-

tion in D-I (no seniors, two juniors,

fi ve sophomores and seven freshmen)

to the America East Championship

game for the fourth straight season.

Th e sixth-seeded Catamounts (13-17,

7-9 America East) topped #3 Boston

University and #2 Binghamton before

falling at top-seeded Albany in the

title game.

While at St. Francis (Pa.), he was

an integral part of the Red Flash win-

ning the 1991 Northeast Conference

title and a trip to the NCAA Men’s

Basketball Championship. While at

St. Francis, he coached Mike Iuz-

zolino, who went on to the NBA for

the Dallas Mavericks. In 1992, he also

was an assistant coach for the Panama

Men’s Olympic Team in its attempt to

qualify for the Summer Olympics in

Barcelona.

Sanow is the 21st coach in the

109th season of Bloomsburg Univer-

sity men’s basketball competition.
