Manager Notes

Lake Hammock Parking

At the LHV HOA meeting last Tuesday I introduced our new "Parking Permit” for your

guests. Since we had such a small attendance of residents at the meeting I am sending this

email so that all residents will know about this from me and not from "word of mouth" which

sometimes is not repeated in accuracy.

As per our Rules and Regulations, Paragraph # 10,”Parking of vehicles on the lawns is not

permitted. The Park reserves the right to remove such vehicle (s) in the Park at its

sole discretion. Temporary parking on vacant lots is permitted for guests of residents;

however, overnight parking is not permitted. Overnight guests needing parking

arrangements other than in their host's driveway must contact the Park Manager in

advance."

Parking Permit: When you are going to have a guest at your house and they are unable to

park in your driveway and there is a vacant lot close to your home, your guest are allowed to

park there with a Parking Permit. "IF" it is only for a few hours than a Parking Permit is not

required. "IF" it will be for overnight or all day a Parking Permit will be required. The

Parking Permit can be obtained at the office and will have your lot number and dates that

your guest will be parking on the vacant lot. The Parking Permit should be placed on the

dashboard of your guest vehicle.

Parking of a resident's vehicle (including golf carts) is NOT allowed on any vacant lot or

your grass. We have extra temporary parking at the side of the Clubhouse if needed.

Please do not park in front of the clubhouse unless you are there for clubhouse activity or

clubhouse visit.

A 'notice' will be placed on any vehicle parked in the grass or in a vacant lot without a

Parking Permit. If the vehicle is not removed it will be considered an "unauthorized" vehicle

and will be removed at the vehicle's owner's expense. This is as per our Rules and

Regulations and this is also posted at the entrance of our park.

If you have any questions, please come in and see me or give me a call at the office.

Thanking you all for your cooperation.

Facts about May

Emerald is the birthstone for May.

Hawthorn and Lily of the Valley are the flowers for the month of May.

According to the early Roman calendar, May was the third month. Later, the ancient

Romans used January 1 for the beginning of their year, and May became the fifth month.

May has always had 31 days.

Several stories are passed around to show how the month of May was named. The most

widely accepted explanation is that it was named for Maia, the Roman goddess of spring

and growth. Her name related to a Latin word that means increase or growth.

May is one of the most beautiful months of the year in the North Temperate Zone. Usually

the snow and ice are gone and the hot temperatures haven't arrived. The first garden

begins to sprout in May. The wild flowers are blooming, and the trees and grasses have

turned green. Wild flowers that bloom in different parts of America are the forsythia,

dogwood, violets, and jack-in-the-box. Many birds have built their nests, and mother birds

are sitting on the eggs, which will soon hatch.

The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs,

Louisville, Kentucky. It is the most famous horse race in the United States.

Many Mexican Americans celebrate what they call Cinco De Mayo, on May 5th. It is the

anniversary of the Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862. It is a national

holiday in Mexico.

Mother's Day (May 9th) was first observed in 1908. It was designated by Presidential

proclamation, and was recognized officially by Congress and the President in 1914. It is

celebrated in honor of Mothers.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated the third Saturday of May. The United States honors

the men and women of the military services. The Armed Forces Day Celebration combined

the Army, Navy, and the Air Force in 1950. Prior to that year, they had been held at

separate times.

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is observed, in most states of the United States, the

last Monday in May. It is a legal holiday and is observed in memory of those who died while

serving the United States in war. The graves of the war heroes are decorated with

flowers. It was first observed in 1866.

May Activities

May's activities are varied and should appeal to almost everyone. The first

scheduled event is on Monday, May 3rd with By-The-Book dining. We will be

eating at Harbor Side Restaurant on Lake Shipp. Carpooling from the club

house at 4:30 pm. Grab your coupon book and enjoy a special

meal with your neighbors.

The theme of the All-Park Brunch (pot luck) on Saturday,

May 8th is to celebrate all mothers - no matter where they

may be. We will come together at 10:00 am at the club house.

The Polk Museum of Art, which is “more than an art museum”, is the location

of our May 11th (Tuesday) trip. The museum, located in Lakeland, currently

has four exhibitions in addition to their regular collection. They are “Florida

Landscapes”, “Art & Design: Movement”, “Japanese Textiles & Prints” and

“Functional Ceramics”. We will see the museum at your pace and then travel

to Zohras for lunch. Zohras restaurant is located on Lake Wire and provides

beautiful lakeside dining in a historic home. It has earned a reputation both

for outstanding service and their food which is prepared by Executive Chef

Jose Rodriquez, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts. We will gather

at the club house at 10:00 am to carpool to Lakeland. Maps and directions

will be provided to the drivers.

Saturday, May 15th at 8:30 am will find Lake Hammock Village residents

gathering at R-Place Eatery for their monthly breakfast outing.

“Happy Birthday” wishes will be filling the air at the

clubhouse on Sunday, May 16th at 6:30 pm. Everyone

celebrating a birthday in May and those who wish to part of

the celebration will enjoy cake and ice cream. A classic

movie will follow at 7:00 pm. Keep an eye on the bulletin

board for the name of this month's classic movie.

6

The All-Park Pot Luck is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19th at 6:00 pm. An

attorney and counselor at law will be our featured after dinner speaker. Linda

Littlefield of the Littlefield Law Group, P.A., is providing a free seminar relating to

elder law issues. Plan on joining us for dinner and stay for up-to-date information

within the field of elder law.

Early dining will be Friday, May 28th at La Fiesta Mexicana in downtown Haines

City. We will meet at the club house at 5:00 pm to car pool to the restaurant. The

mariachi band is scheduled to begin playing at 6:00 pm.

This will give us time to enjoy their good Mexican

cooking and beverages before the atmosphere

becomes electric as the band begins to play!

Memorial Day, Monday, May 31st concludes the

month's activities. Join your neighbors at the pool at noon

for a short ceremony which will include raising a new USA

flag. Then we'll all travel back to our own Lake Hammock

dock for a hot dog roast courtesy of the HOA Board. We

will enjoy the new tables and grills that have recently been

installed by our park's owners. Bring a dish to share, a

portable chair and your own favorite beverage. See you

there.

I Once Had a Mother

An original by Don Allan Dinio

I still remember her vividly everyday whenever I see one. I wish she was still around.

I envy people who still have theirs.

I cry a tear inside me when things go wrong and feel down and realize that she is no more.

I still remember how tight she was with her hard-earned money.

She was an expert in division when it came to food.

As much as I hate hand-me-downs, it was a religious tradition in our family.

Now I know why and learned from her the basics of accounting,

if not the basics of surviving.

I still remember how kind and sympathetic she always was.

She gave all her time to everyone who needed her services,

day or night, especially to the needy - the poor.

Every time I hear a baby cry... it automatically flashes a picture

of my mom in her white cap and uniform.

But when she got old and sickly, we barely afforded a nurse like

her to take care of her needs.

She seldom complained of her pains and took everything so calmly.

I still remember when she always told me not to get married too soon

till I find a steady job and a stable income.

I have always wondered if that was her good excuse because she never

liked the women I have dated.

Now I really know why. She had her reason.

You can't feed your family with love or pay your bills with it either.

I still remember when she always told me to watch the people I hang around with.

She always nagged me to come home early whenever I left the house

on Friday and Saturday nights to party.

She was always worried about me because I was a teen-ager.

I really did not know what she was worried about.

With what I went through in life, without her nagging advice,

I might not even be here to write this down for her.

Now I know and understand why mothers always worry.

It is mothers' inherent nature!

16

I still remember when I was really young and confused, I ran away from home.

I thought that was better for me because she had too many house rules for

me to follow and too many things for me to do.

Little did I know that, to be on your own was twice harder than to follow mom's rules.

She did not stop me from running away.

She believed in freedom! I believe now she tricked me into learning...my own hard way!

I still remember the last time I saw her - in her coffin decked with flowers.

My sister told me that it was an expensive coffin.

Boy, it seems like I heard her say, "Why did you buy this one for me? It's too expensive!

You could have used the money for the family!" That's my mom, practical and sensible.

Today and on every Mother's Day, to those who still have their mothers, be glad!

Never take them for granted.

One thing is sure, you will miss them when they are gone.

Did it ever dawn on you that you saw a card - that's almost perfect for your loved one

and was about to buy it - then realized that - that "special someone" is six feet down?

To all the mothers, who have sacrificed a lot for their children for them to have a better

future, especially my mom, may this serve as a perpetual tribute and lasting memory for

you. Love, your son!

An Affordable Solution for those seeking Homemakers, companions and sitters.

Providing many services.

The Bathtub Test

During a visit to the senior’s home, I asked the director how do you determine

whether or not a patient should be institutionalized?

“Well,” said the director, “we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup,

and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.”

“Oh, I understand,” I said. “A normal person would use the bucket because it’s

bigger than the spoon or the teacup.”

“N o.” said the director, “A normal person would pull the plug, Do you want a bed

near the window?”
