The River Tavy 24th January Organiser - Alun Jones Meet at the clubhouse, 8am Cost £13 This paddle is about 6 miles long. We start in the centre of Tavistock. Fast easy rapids take you out of town, but watch out for a stopper lurking under one bridge in high wa-ter. A series of chutes form a grade 2 rapid as you leave the last houses. Below this the Tavy winds through woodland away from civilisation and roads, with frequent grade 2/3 rap-ids and some great surf waves in high water.

from the left and a little way below is the biggest rapid on the river. The final mile has big continual waves in high water. Just before the takeout bridge is a tiny sloping weir which produces a good surf wave/ stopper in all levels. After you see Denham bridge, get out directly below on river left.

The river is graded at 2 with one Grade 3 rapid, similar in difficulty to

the Dart Loop, but without the crowds of people! And it is only about 20 miles further on from the Dart - worth it!

The River Dart 7th February Organiser - Rich Carter Meet at the clubhouse, 8am Cost £13 We’re going the River Dart, but which section will we do? That is the question you are all asking!

Upper, could be both if we are catering for mixed abilities! And we might even be able to fit in a trip on the Lower for those not wanting so much adrenaline.

So it’s a wait and see, and decide nearer the time. If you are interest-ed in any of these sections, please put your name on the list and

op-tion. Of course it is all water-dependent and the Instructors have

everyone does.

The River Exe 28th February Organiser - John Kent Meet at the clubhouse, 8am Cost £10 This is the river we paddled when we did the Tiverton weekend. It is a grade 2 river which holds its water well, having six weirs on the section we do. More info in next newsletter.

Wednesday DVD nights

7 - 9 pm

The Clubhouse

We meet, chat, have a cup of tea and then get stuck into the serious busi-ness of watching a canoeing DVD to-gether. Last month’s meeting was slap bang in the middle of the big freeze, the car park was a skating rink, the roads were not far off that. Still 17 people turned up to watch Wet House and Dynasty, two very exciting DVDs. We also munched our way through a plateful of mince pies!

This month we will choose two more from our library.

Do come! With no pool sessions in January, these sessions, along with the Sunday morning ones, provide a welcome chance to stay in touch.

Sunday Morning sessions 14th February, 14th March At Market Yard, 10 - noon. Cost £2

Our regular monthly morning pad-dle at Market Yard. Everyone is wel-come. Last month the water levels were high and the temperature was cold. Not deterred, a group of 20-ish paddlers got on and paddled upstream. We all got past the first

But soon after, a very cold Kyra, having taken a swim, was escorted back to the clubhouse by others who were glad of the excuse to be able to return to warm changing rooms! The others carried on up-stream for a bit longer.

Meanwhile the Open Boaters also had fun and games but no swims. There will be no specialist coaching in Open Boat skills in January but it re-starts again in February. Sara can take beginners in the first hour and soloists in the second hour – you do need to sign up for this.

Meet at the Clubhouse, 10am till noon. Paddling is not essential! You

can just meet, chat and sip tea as you discuss the new boat you got for Christmas!

Pool Sessions Fridays 8-9pm

Remember: NO SESSIONS in January.

Start again on February 5th

£2.50 Youth, £3 Adults

Pool Sessions: start February 5th

Pool sessions start again on February 5th and run all though February till the end of March. Cost £2.50 for Youth members and £3 for Adults.

What Are Pool Sessions For? In case you are not sure what pool sessions are for: they are good for prac-tising capsizes, for learning to support or learning to roll and generally improv-ing confidence. You can start coming to grips with playboating (freestyle) in the S6 we have there. Or you can just paddle about and be sociable.

Coloured Wrist Bands We have a system of coloured wrist bands in place to ensure that you get a fair and scheduled time in a kayak and when you are not paddling there is an opportunity for you to mess about in the small pool or chat to other members on poolside. Listen out for the whistle to know when your time in a boat is.

What Do I Need To Bring? All you need to bring is a swimming costume, towel and money. We provide the boats and paddles and spray decks. You don’t wear helmets and buoyancy aids. It’s easy.

Who Can I Ask If I Don’t Know What To Do? Look for the person in the yellow T-shirt. He or she is the supervisor and will help you find a boat or explain what is going on. The person in the green T-shirt is the instructor and he will help you with capsizing, rolling etc.

Can I Bring My Own Boat? Yes, but it must be very clean and you should bring it in through the fire exit door. Please make sure you have washed away the leaves and slugs from your boat. It does not endear us to the pool staff if we leave a trail of

When Is The Next Pool Session? Pool sessions start again on February 5th and run all though February till the end of March.

Dart Weekend

The Loopers’ Trip

By Vicky Bennett We met at Market Yard at 8:00 (which was a bit early to be honest) and sort-ed out kit and boats and cars in the freezing cold, then set off to Dart-moor! After a two hour minibus drive - accompanied by some amazing sing-ing from Michael, we arrived at the train station at Buck-fastleigh, which is the start point for the Low-er Dart. We split into our groups and the people paddling the Loop went up to the start. In my group were Rich, Andy, George, Sam, Alex, Holly and me. Luckily none of us were drivers so we could get on straight away.

The river under the bridge was “just lapping the slab” which means the river height is mediumish, so we all set off down the river, listening to Sam complaining about having to paddle an RPM. There were a few places to stop and play before the main rapid section, where the Three Stars fin-ished off what they needed to do, and Alex entertained us by having to roll.

We then carried on until the first big rapid “Washing Machine”, where you

have to stay close to the island to avoid a stopper. Next we reached “Lover's Leap”. Rich told us to watch out for the big rock at the bottom, which is in fact a huge cliff sticking out into the river - but we all managed to avoid hitting it and paddled on to a short way above the top of “Triple Falls”. Here we were told that there are three

parts: a drop where you had to paddle hard through

the stopper, then a chute, then just a load of waves. Everyone forgot this in about two seconds, and just followed Sam. On the

first drop however, George got stuck com-

ing through the stopper and capsized. He made it to the

side, but his boat went down the other two falls without him, with Rich and several other paddlers trying to rescue it. Eventually he was back in his boat and we all went on to the last big rapid “Spin Dryer”. We all laughed at Alex hav-ing to roll again, then started pad-dling back to Buckfastleigh to get off.

We got back ages before everyone else, but it was freezing and pour-ing with rain so we all went and got

our stuff from the minibus to get changed. Rich and George had to wait for Gareth to get back to unlock the van, but unfortunately when he did get back, he realised he had lost the keys, so they had to wait for four hours for Gareth to drive all the way to Frome and back again with the spare keys.

It rained all night, so the next day the river had risen a couple of inches. We only had one group on the Loop now, so we had to wait for the shuttle. Just as we were about to get on, Sam realised he had left his paddles in the minibus, so we had to wait even longer while some more were found. We finally got on the water, and within 10 minutes Sam Thomson had rolled about four times. There were a couple of capsizes on the way down to Triple Falls, but the most points were achieved when we actually reached it.

Holly got stuck in the stopper on the first drop, so everyone behind her landed on top of her then sat laughing on the side, until George came over, landed on her and then managed to capsize again, but pushed Holly out at

the same time. However, George eventually got back in his boat and paddled down without capsizing. At spin dryer, I was one of the last to go down. Everyone in front of me made it down, but then I decided that it would be really fun to go swimming,

so I went straight down the middle and cap-sized.

We didn't have to pad-dle as far this time, so we got out and drove on to Buckfastleigh, to find Howard wearing Hazel's pyjamas, and Julie lost somewhere on Dartmoor...

Everyone really enjoyed the trip, even with the cold, rain, and early mornings.

Trip Reports - The Loop continued

Holly got stuck in the stopper at Triple 1, so everyone behind her landed on top of her, then sat laughing on the side.

-2°C on the car’s thermometer as we approach the clubhouse. We arrive uncharacteristically early, thanks to Louise, to see a sprinkling of people and snow in the car park. Soon we were all there. 23 people this year - a great turn out despite the tempera-ture. The river at Market Yard looked ok, just below the jetty, so we packed and organized into cars, to do the stretch from Woolverton to Langham Farm. The river at Langham Farm was a bit of a surprise when we did the shuttle: over all of the walls and just over the weir at the top, it was flowing here!

The seal launch at Woolverton re-vealed how cold the water was: al-pine water draining from Frome’s newly found snow fields. This time the river was running gently making for good going, a pleasant yet cold journey through the trees. At the first weir a newly fallen tree blocked our normal shooting point on river right, so it was centre river, kindly tested by James, and the rest of the group not afraid of cold water was shortly down safely. A number of very sensible

people who did not want to freeze early on in the trip decided to walk round, with Pam, Rich and John giv-ing lots of help to get in and out of boats!

Just below Scutts Bridge where the water always picks up, I watched a boat gently floating down the river, empty, well apart from water! Kate had fallen for the old canoe problem of seeing branches stuck trapped on

the bridge and fixating on them. She di-rected her boat towards them and gained 3 points, the first of the year.

Everyone shot the weir at the

Rode Mill safely with some paddlers playing in the stopper, easy on your right side. Pam however wanted a photo and asked us to turn around to face the sun, thanks Pam.

Down at Langham Farm half the par-ty shot the weir at the top to get around the loop while others navi-gated their way over the walls to-wards the bridge where a large curv-ing wave tried to direct you in to the wall. James (Hannan) came down with a good angle and very grace

perfectly position his boat on the cor-ner of the bridge. Two seconds later he was being picked out of the water in the pool. No harm done. Another 3 points.

Moments later, Ellie paddling down to the bridge, sadly missed it and drifted into the leat, but held onto the bank in the flow to await help from Rich to disembark. Valiant effort but 2 points for a technical rescue. All together again below the bridge, a hardy group tested the water with some squirting practice. Mine a little too far over, and I discovered how cold the water was. Ice-cream head!

Paddlers with points Girls: Ellie (2) Ladies: Amanda, Emma, Kate (3), Louise, Pam Boys: Ailbhe, Jack, William Men: Alun, Andy B, Andy Lyall, Dave, John, Jonathan, James Hannan (3), Rich Carter, James Spurling, Richard Heal, Peter, Terry, Sam and Justin.

Safe on the side we all changed into our dry clothes, well nearly all of us. My better half was searching the car for her jeans, and as Rich knows from the Dart weekend, it can get a bit cold in wet kit. Lou couldn’t find them and heard a voice note, ‘I saw a pair in the changing rooms at Market Yard.’

A great turn out and a fun paddle, see you all again in 2010.

What’s New?

This is a new section to the newsletter and it aims to inform readers of new kit recently released. It will include all those new expensive toys plus those little ‘treat yourself’ ones.

Kayaks To kick off, there is a new generation of boat; light, nimble and very expensive. They come in the form of carbon fibre and fibre glass play-boats, at present there are 2 on the market, Pyranha Molan and Wavesport Project 52 CX.

They are both very rare, with Wavesport an-nouncing that they are only making 50 world-wide.

Paddles There are many new paddles on the market but the most innovative have to be the new Robson paddles which are something a bit different. They come in a four different styles with some funky patterns on the blades, they are not available in the UK yet but should be very soon so look out for them playing in those holes and waves.

What’s New?

Buoyancy Aids Palm has released a lot of new equipment for the 2010 season including the much acclaimed Extrem vest which is in its 6th generation.

This new model has improved pocket layout with ever more holes to hide gadg-ets and whistles. They have redesigned the foam section so it’s less restricting and takes up less space. It includes a new rear pocket for storage of travel doc-uments and another for a hydration pack for those longer paddles.

Gloves

Something for those people who suffer from blisters and cold hands; Palm has released some revolutionary gloves, these are the perfect answer to this age old problem and are 2 piece neoprene with little pimples all over giving the grip needed. The design means they allow the user to move their hands freely but retain the grip needed to control a paddle. Have you been to the Family Adventure Store in Hilperton yet? They can kit you up with everything you need. Or visit them at www.familyadventurestore.co.uk.

And the good news is that all FCC members get a discount on presentation of their membership card.

Ed: Thank you Alex for these facts and figures. Readers, you will be pleased to note that Alex will be writing a regular article for us.

COMPETITION TIME

Lots of people entered the competition this time! Well done everyone. You were all right. They said it was the knees that gave it away. Nothing changes does it?

And the winning name pulled out of the hat on DVD night was Max Charlesworth. A box of choocies was the prize, which Max proceeded to share with us all!

The person in the photo is of course, our very own Head Coach, Rich. What is interesting is that Rich admits he was struggling in one of those ‘tippy’ boats (very long and very thin), learning the skills of ‘flat water paddling’ with Reading Canoe Club. Interesting to think of Rich ‘struggling’. Still it was a long time ago - October 6th 1991.

(We have John to thank for the photo and its date!)

HERE ARE TWO MORE FOR YOU TO GUESS!

A clue for you! He’s a very good paddler now, but we don’t see much of him these days. However he was in that early morning blast down the Upper in November 09. And his Dad is very well known in the club!

Entries to Pam by next DVD night, when the winning name will be pulled out of the hat.

COMPETITION TIME

A clue for you! He is now a bit of a raft ex-pert.

They thought they’d got away with it! But a chance remark on the New Year’s Paddle re-minded us all that Andy and Lou got engaged last July. Belated congratulations from us all!

CONGRATULATIONS Andy and Louise

INSTALLING A HUSBAND Dear Tech Support,

Recently I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance, par-ticularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable pro-grams, such as:

· Romance 9.5 and · Personal Attention 6.5,

and then installed undesirable programs such as :

· CRICKET 3.0 and · GOLF CLUBS 4.1.1 ..

Also Conversation 8..0 no longer runs and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.

Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do?

Signed,

Desperate.

DEAR DESPERATE ,< B>

First, keep in mind, · Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while · Husband 1.0< B>is an operating system.

Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.1.0 update.

If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications

Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5.

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1 ..

Please note that Beer 6. 1 is a very bad program that will down-load the Farting and Snoring Loudly Trojan

Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Moth-er-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventu-ally seize control of all your system resources..)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program These are unsupported applications and will crash Hus-band 1.0 . In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend

· Cooking 3.0 and · Hot Lingerie 7.7. Good Luck! Tech Support

We need help to check the kit, tidy up the store room and any other general tasks that need doing! After the work is done we will have a paddle!

FACT: We thought we had a big turn out on Jan 1st, but did you know there were more paddlers in ‘08 and ‘05. Both those years had 24. In the other years since 2000, we had an average of 16 on our New Year’s Day paddles.

Draconian or what!

Here is an interesting fact from way back, 2nd November 1992 to be precise. It is concerning the trouble we were having with dirty boats at the pool - does anything change? The minute book of our committee meetings has the following entry:

‘Dirty boats are being brought into the pool. The culprits are to be caught and disciplined as necessary.’

Would this be appropriate?

Repeat after me “I promise to remove eve-ry last slug ....”

The ill fated Usk - 6th and 20th December

Twice now we have planned our visit to you. Your waves and your drops are fun for us too. But fate overtook us. It wasn’t our fault - The rain hammered down, the river washed out. And so the decision was made With webcam assistance To regroup on the 20th and try again then. But a deep freeze was waiting, To scupper our new plans. With headlines of ice and sub zero temps We’d be fools to attempt it. Besides Christmas was coming and some needed to rest! Roll on the next paddle – let’s hope it’s the best. We will fit the Usk in sometime ... ....If weather permits!
