CKEYDIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Year three of UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey has arrived! We are looking forward to another great season of fast paced University hockey at the Dog Pound!!!

As we move ahead, we look to continue to attract the best staff, coaches and students to our campus with the common focus of excellence for everyone. The vision includes our campus being Canada’s leader in athletics, recreation and wellness programs combined with top flight athletic facilities, all of which will enrich the overall post secondary experience for our students.

We are very excited to introduce Canadian hockey legend Karen Nystrom as our new head coach. She is a natural fit for the program and her knowledge of the game at all levels is exceptional. We look forward for her to step into her new role with the team and we are certain that the program will continue to grow and reach great heights under her direction.

With the pillars put in place over the past two years, coach Gary Pitcher left the program in a great situation to move forward. He simply did an outstanding job putting together a competitive roster of 22 eligible players from scratch, which requires all of the players to be full-time students at UOIT, a daunting task. Now entering year three, the team is in great position to move towards contender status under coach Nystrom’s guidance, when our student-athletes move into their third year with the team, combined with our strong recruiting class.

Our intentions are to deliver a top rated, first class varsity hockey program which mirrors the reputation and success of our existing intercollegiate programs. This will build a sense of pride and community on campus and will support the successful recruitment of students. The sense of pride will also be emphasized within varsity athletics as it creates an active and vibrant atmosphere on campus.

The Campus Ice Centre, aptly nicknamed the Dog Pound, is the official home of the Ridgebacks and was packed with fans of all ages last year. The twin pad - size arena complex, located right on campus, has a seating capacity in the main rink for 550 with standing room for another 250 and makes for an exciting atmosphere at home games! There is also an amazing restaurant on the second level (Shagwell’s on the Ridge) that overlooks the ice. Each Ridgebacks team also has it’s own specially designed change room, coaching space, laundry and equipment storage.

This season, we look to continue building a winning tradition at UOIT with the caliber of coaching staff assembled along with the plan we have in place. We can’t do it however without great fans and supporters.

We hope you enjoy year three of Ridgebacks hockey!

LET’S GO RIDGEBACKS!

The Whitby native joins the Ridgebacks after two successful seasons between the pipes for the Whitby Wolves in the PWHL. In Whitby, she was among the top goalies in the league. In 2008-09, she put together a record of 6-6-4 and a 2.26 goals against average. During the 2007-08 campaign, she posted a 8-3-1 record and a sparkling 2.09 goals against average which was good for ninth amongst PWHL goaltenders. The addition of Larabie makes goaltending a position of strength for the 2009-10 squad.

The native of Hastings, Ont. enters her second season with UOIT. Thompson shouldered the majority of the load in net for the Ridgebacks last season making 22 appearances. She earned three wins, including the first two shutouts in UOIT women’s hockey history. She will be looked to in 2009-10 to provide stable play for the Ridgebacks, as her solid goaltending will help give the team a chance to win every time she takes the ice.

Johnstone was named the UOIT 2008-09 female freshman of the year for her athletic achievements in her freshman year. In addition a solid campaign on the ice where finished second on the team in scoring (6G, 7A), she also suited up for the tennis team. The Niagara Falls, Ont. native made a big impact in her first OUA season and coach Nystrom is expecting big things for years to come.

The Whitby native joins the Ridgebacks after achieving success with the Whitby Wolves and the Henry Street High School Hawks. She has been a scoring threat at every level she has played, accumulating 23 goals and 28 assists in her two seasons with Whitby as well as being the league scoring champion in her final high school season. The scoring punch she can provide is exactly what the Ridgebacks are looking for from this homegrown star. Worthington was also part of Team Ontario in 2007, a squad coached by UOIT head coach Karen Nystrom. This level of comfort and familiarity will allow her to make an immediate impact for the Ridgebacks in what looks to be a successful University hockey career.

Pigeon is in her second season as part of the Ridgebacks team, but missed the entire 2008-09 campaign due to an injury. With great hands and excellent vision around the net, fans will be excited to see her take to the ice in a Ridgebacks uniform. The native of Scarborough, Ont. played for the Toronto Junior Aeros before joining UOIT, where she scored 19 points in 32 regular season games plus six points in seven play-off contests. An all-around athlete, Pigeon was named athlete of the year at Birchmount Park Collegiate for three consecutive years.

Hadley enters her second season at UOIT after a productive freshman year. The native of Belleville, Ont. is a scoring threat from anywhere in the offensive zone as she was second on the team in goals despite missing a portion of the season due to injury in 2008-09. Hadley will be asked to make plays offensively, using her speed and vision to set up her teammates and find the back of the net herself.

The forward had a strong freshman season where she was called upon in many key situations. Smithurst is a second year forward from Oshawa, Ont. The graduate of the Oshawa Lady Generals minor hockey program is a solid two-way forward who is responsible in her own end and aggressive on the forecheck. In her freshman season, she was able to adjust to the pace of the OUA game. She is a team player who will be looking to see some time on the penalty killing unit.

Cockburn has minor hockey experience playing all over the Greater Toronto Area as she has had stops in Durham West, Scarborough, Willowdale, Markham/Stouffville and Aurora. 2009-10 will be her second season of OUA hockey as she had a solid first year with the Ridgebacks. The communications major is a well-rounded athlete who has the makings of a team leader for years to come. She is very strong on faceoffs who will see some time on the penalty killing unit.

Tereshyn has been a leader since day one with the Ridgebacks as an assistant captain for all her three years on the team. After nine seasons in the Durham West system, she brought her skills on the ice and in the classroom to UOIT. Tereshyn was awarded the UOIT Scholastic award in 2008-09 for having the top grade point average among varsity athletes as well as being named a CIS Academic All-Canadian (08-09) and an OUA woman of influence (07-08).

A native of Gananoque, Ont., Steacy joins the Ridgebacks after completing a successful run as the captain of the Midget AA Kingston Ice Wolves of the Greater Kingston Girls Hockey Association. Last season, she led her team to an undefeated 17-0-5 regular season while picking up eight goals and four assists in the process. One of the keys to her game is a strong forecheck, and coach Nystrom will look for her to excel in that aspect. She is no stranger to winning as she was the assistant captain for the Kingston Bantam AA team that captured a bronze medal at the 2005-06 provincial championship.

Friel enters her third season wearing the ‘C’ for the Ridgebacks, who has demonstrated great leadership abilities on and off the ice. She is a strong, defensive-minded blue liner who isn’t afraid to enter the rush with the puck. She was named the team’s top defensive player last season and head coach Karen Nystrom will be looking for that type of performance once again from the Pickering native.

This native of Cobourg, Ont. joins the Ridgebacks after spending the 2008-09 season with the Peterborough Ice Kats Midget AA team. A consistent scoring threat, she tallied 36 goals and 36 assists over the last two seasons with Peterborough and was part of the Ice Kats team that captured the Golden Blades Tournament championship in Detroit, Michigan. A versatile athlete, Gibson has captured hockey awards over the past five seasons that include most dedicated player, most valuable player and most sportsmanlike player, as well as being named the St. Mary’s Secondary School junior girls athlete of the year. The Ridgebacks were happy to have Jaclyn commit to UOIT and look to see an impact from her from game one of her freshman season.

Edwards enters her third season with the Ridgebacks. In her first two seasons, she was a rock-solid blueliner who acted as a calming influence on her younger teammates. In 2007-08, she was named the team’s MVP, top defensive player and the UOIT female athlete of the year. Edwards has great vision on the ice and will be looked upon to handle both power-play and penalty killing duties for the Ridgebacks in 2009-10.

Palmateer enters her third season with the Ridgebacks as the all-time leader in goals, assists, points and games played. After a solid freshman campaign where she led the team with 14 points, she was asked to be an assistant captain for year two. The Cobourg, Ont. native had a tremendous 2008-09 campaign recording a team leading 15 points, where she was named the team’s MVP following the conclusion of the season. Palmateer played junior hockey with Cold Creek before joining the Ridgebacks.

This is Bell’s third season with the Ridgebacks and the 5-7 forward has adjusted nicely to the strength and speed of OUA hockey. In two seasons, she has compiled 11 points and done a solid job in her role as an energetic, puck-pressuring forward. From Cobourg, Ont., Bell played two seasons with the Whitby Wolves and prior to that led her Cobourg team to league and provincial titles in 2003-04.

2009-10 COACHES PROFILES

In 2009-10, Karen Nystrom became the second head coach of the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey program after founding head coach Gary Pitcher stepped down following the conclusion of the 2008-09 OUA regular season, passing the torch to his assistant coach and national team hero. Nystrom has quite an impressive hockey resume as a member of the Canadian National team for almost a decade. In her career with Team Canada, she won three World Championship titles (1992, 1994 & 1997), a 3 Nations Cup title (1996) and a Pacific Rim championship (1995). She also won an Olympic silver medal at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. Not only has Nystrom excelled on the ice, but in coaching as well. She served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Jr. Aeros

and for an U-18 team Ontario which won a gold medal. For the past two seasons, she has gained valuable experience behind the bench with the Ridgebacks as an assistant coach. Nystrom will bring the same intensity to the Ridgeback team as she did on the ice throughout her playing career, with a focus on conditioning, team speed and aggressiveness. She is looking forward to the new challenges she is about to face as a head coach in the CIS, striving to build the program into a one of the top teams in the country.

EYOPENING NIGHT - 2007

Opening NightSeptember 29, 2007

It was an afternoon to remember for the UOIT women’s hockey team and their newest fans, as university hockey officially arrived in Durham Region when the Ridgebacks skated to a 3-2 overtime loss to the Western Mustangs, during their historic debut in OUA action.

The Ridgebacks hit the ice with energy and momentum, boosted by a big crowd at the Campus Ice Centre. The first ever regular season Ridgeback goal happened at 5:27 of the first period, as assistant captain Sarah Carter opened the scoring. Unfortunately the lead was short lived, as Western was able to tie the score on the power play with only seconds remaining in the period.

After falling behind 2-1, the Ridgebacks were able to tie the game with just under ten minutes to play on a nice passing play between Carling Jeyes and Rikki Palmateer sending the hometown crowd into a frenzy and eventually the game into overtime. In the overtime period, the Ridgebacks got their signals crossed at their own blue line and Western made them pay at the 1:06 mark.

“I was very pleased with our team’s effort; all the girls really understood how special the game was and what it means to UOIT varsity sports,” said head coach Gary Pitcher. “These girls will forever hold a place in our program’s history as the first to lace up for the Ridgebacks and they are representing UOIT incredibly well. It was great to see fans in the stands, cheering on these skilled and talented young women. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The women’s OUA debut is the result of three years of planning and preparation for UOIT’s entry into both men’s and women’s varsity hockey. The Ridgebacks of UOIT were officially accepted as the 19th member of the OUA in early 2006.

“This first game of the women’s hockey season represents a new chapter in varsity sports at UOIT,” said Ken Babcock, Athletic Director at UOIT. “With the men’s team ready to take to the ice for its first-ever game in October, UOIT students, staff and faculty, and hockey fans in Durham Region can take pride in these hockey teams for many years to come. The OUA is widely considered to be among the highest levels of sports competition available in the province. This is a real opportunity for Durham sports fans to catch some tremendous hockey.”

The momentous game kicked off with a ceremonial puck drop featuring UOIT president Dr. Ronald Bordessa, UOIT Student Association president Fraser McArthur and Babcock. Joining the UOIT dignitaries was special guest Glenn Coady, whose suggestion of the Ridgebacks as a varsity team name for UOIT was chosen from more than 300 submissions.

CKEYOUA - WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

Jessica Bosse - RowingUOIT Ridgebacks women’s rower and Oshawa resident, Jessica Bosse, was recognized at the OUA Women of Influence Luncheon at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. For the last six years, the OUA recognized the top female scholar-athletes from across the province who have excelled in their chosen sports and fields of study. At the gala, two-time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek was the keynote speaker.

Bosse is a UOIT student-athlete who strives for excellence, as she is highly dedicated to both her education and to the sport of rowing. Currently enrolled in the challenging Health Science program and on the varsity rowing team, the Oshawa native is upholding an ‘A’ average.

Once on the water, Bosse is all business. She has proved her versatility on the team as the coaching staff has used her as a rower and as a coxswain, being a leader in both capacities. She rallies and drives her crew to more exertion and effort in practice and at regattas.

Bosse also plays an active role in the local community. She has helped spearhead a number of community initiatives involving the Ridgebacks. She is a member of the team who is always willing to help others and is the type of athlete who is 100 percent committed in every practice and race.

All of the honoured athletes and guests were treated by a keynote speech from Tonya Verbeek. The OUA graduate became the first Canadian woman ever to win an Olympic medal in wresting, claiming silver in 55 kg freestyle at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Four years later in Beijing, Verbeek won a bronze medal to become the most decorated Canadian wrestler at the Olympic Games.

FLEX CentreThe FLEX Fitness Centre is one of the great new additions of the CRWC at UOIT. The FLEX Fitness Centre is 10,000-sq. ft., full of the best state-of-the-art cardio and weight machines. The centre also includes two aerobic/dance studios, two training rooms used for sports training and fitness related classes.

Also available to the athletes is a brand new physiotherapy room, massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic services. Having these services all under one roof will allow for quicker care, which in turn will result in quicker recovery and a return to game action.

CRWCThe Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC), which opened in 2007 is the crown jewel of athletics and health & fitness at UOIT. The centre piece of the state-of-the-art $17 million facility is the new 28,500 sq. ft. gymnasium. The gymnasium is fully equipped with a top of the line shock resistant maple hardwood floor, seating for 2,000 spectators and a curtain system to create three separate gyms. The triple gym also has three electronic scoreboards, a professional quality sound system and a complete floor covering system available for non-sporting events. The large gym is also host to an elevated, 200 metre, three-lane running track.

Also part of the CRWC is an additional 13,500 sq. ft. gym. The secondary gymnasium features a curtain system to create two separate courts, two scoreboards, a media gondola and bleacher seating for 1,000 spectators.

The CRWC also includes two training rooms, a boardroom and a VIP lounge. The training rooms have multiple set ups available; from classroom, to spin classes, to a training environment. The boardroom has a meeting room capacity of 24, and up to 36 for special event use. Another highlight of the CRWC is the VIP lounge that includes a great view on to main court action or other special events in the gymnasium.

The CRWC also contains ten large team rooms with showers, perfect for tournament and special event use. These rooms are used to host annual tournaments such as the David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament, the Adidas Cup and the Big 8 Classic.

Sharing space with the CRWC is the Campus Health Centre. This facility is home to a medical clinic as well as an on-site pharmacy. The Health Centre is also home to an alternative treatment clinic which offers acupuncture, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy and nutritional counseling.

CKEYUOIT TRADITIONS

Hunter the RidgebackHunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa.Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

Ridgebacks NicknameThe Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.A Ridgeback is a large and well muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident that thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions. In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus.Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

The BLUE CREWThe Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets.Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pre-game burgers and hot dogs available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwell’s on the Ridge.

The UOIT Ridgebacks inaugural season was a huge success! Head coach Gary Pitcher and his Ridgebacks took to the ice for the first time on September 29, 2007 in front of a capacity crowd at the Campus Ice Centre. The team skated to a 3-2 overtime loss against the Western Mustangs on the memorable afternoon. Assistant captain Sarah Carter scored the team’s first goal at 5:27 of the first period. The Ridgebacks first win came on November 3, 2007 with a 4-2 road victory over the Waterloo Warriors. Melissa Scott was in net for the win while Jennifer Campitelli picked up the game winning goal.

In yet another season of firsts for UOIT, the Ridgebacks picked up a 3-2 shootout victory over Brock University for the team’s first ever home win on October 10, 2008. Freshman goalie Emma Thompson stopped all three Badger shooters in the win while Sarah Matthews scored the lone goal. Thompson also recorded the Ridgebacks first ever shutout with a 3-0 victory over Queen’s on January 10, 2009. After two years with the program, head coach Gary Pitcher stepped down at the end of the season and Karen Nystrom was named the second head coach in Ridgebacks history.
