“Let them sing praises unto Him with timbrel and harp.” (Psalm 149:3)

Dear Friends,

Welcome to String Theory Season Ten!

I am filled with amazement and gratitude when I look back and realize how far we have come together. A little more than ten years ago, String Theory was merely a dream. I had no idea where to begin or how to make it happen. Today we are consid-ered one of the best chamber music series in the country. All of you have had a part in shaping String Theory! I am forever grateful for our partners, Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, as well as our many sponsors for their consistent support and affirmation. As a thank you, this season we are bringing back some of our “greatest hits” based on your responses to our surveys. Highlights include: • Legendary pianist Leon Fleisher celebrating our 10th anniversary and his 90th birthday with an intimate evening of storytelling and music • Our first outdoor concert at Coolidge Park will be Inuksuit by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams led by Sandbox Percussion for 9 to 99 percussionists • A holiday concert with Grammy Award-winning guitarist, Jason Vieaux and our first bandoneón player, Julien Labro. • The world-premiere of a new composition for clarinet and piano written for Anthony McGill by Grammy Award-winning composer Joan Tower, celebrating String Theory’s 10th anniversary

• An encore performance of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring to close the season with the return of Wu Han and David Finckel • A special 10th Anniversary Gala Celebration on Saturday, January 26th, featuring the famed Emerson String Quartet joined by violinist Soovin Kim and me at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club.

Our String Theory Youth Internship program continues to thrive in its fifth year. Having just raised 7000 meals for the Chattanooga Food Bank through their own benefit concert, the STYI will be led by their dynamic new facilitator, Claire Stockman. At ten years old, String Theory has become a gem in the music world. It is a series that is treasured by the musicians who perform here, not only because of its artistic excellence but also because of the special synergy that exists between the music, the artists, the venue, and the audience. Your enthusiasm and appreciation make artists want to return to String Theory. Thank you for embracing my dream for the past ten years. We have accomplished something truly special together. We have arrived at our 10th season because of all of you – this is YOUR season! Thank you!

Warmly,

String Theory in the ParksLocation: Coolidge Park and Miller Park

A day of outdoor performances in Coolidge and Miller Parks

Hailed by the Washington Post as a group that is “revitalizing the world of contem-porary music”, Sandbox Percussion will join String Theory for a week of outreach and performances. Following their main stage performance at the Hunter Museum on Oc-

tober 23, and after a week of visiting selected elementary schools throughout the area, Sandbox Percussion’s residency will culminate in a performance of the groundbreaking work Inuksuit by the Pulitzer-winning composer John Luther Adams. Described by the

New York Times as “the ultimate environmental piece,” this outdoor concert experience will take place on Saturday, October 27 at Coolidge Park with

musicians performing throughout the park. Listeners are invited to wander, each creating their own unique experience during this hour-long monumental work.

This event will be preceded by a special children’s concert at the newly renovated Miller Park featuring the Trash Can Band from the Arnold Elementary School

(Cleveland, TN), groups from Hamilton County Schools, and the String Theory Youth Internship. Come and celebrate this family-friendly day of music, food trucks, and more!

String Theory Outreach Initiative For Elementary Schools

Location: Chattanooga & Cleveland

Each year, String Theory welcomes a different unique group of musicians to participate in our Outreach Initiative for elementary schools in our communi-ty. In the past, we have brought a piano duo, cello quartet, and wind quintet to our schools. Over the past three years, this initiative has brought some of the world’s best chamber musicians to over 5,000 students in our community, many of whom live in underserved communities and are experiencing live clas-sical music for the first time.

This year String Theory will be bringing the percussion quartet SANDBOX PERCUSSION to selected elementary schools in Chattanooga and Cleveland to teach students about the world of percussion. Stay tuned for more information regarding performance schedules!
