Cheryl Carlson is set to begin her sixth year as Head Volleyball Coach at Stetson University and 13th season as a head coach overall.

Th e 2008 season saw the graduation of Carlson’s fi rst four-year recruit, outside hitter Rebecca Orzechowicz. Under Carlson’s guidance, Orzechowicz developed into one of the top players in Stetson history, compiling 1,114 kills (seventh all-time at SU) and 1,094 digs (second all-time) to become just the fi fth Hatter ever to reach 1,000 in both categories.

In 2007, she led the Hatters to an 11-15 overall record and 4-7 in Atlantic Sun conference play, the team’s best record since 2002. Stetson won its fi nal four matches of the season, making Carlson the only coach in program history to win 10 matches three times in four years since the NCAA reduced schedule length in 1992. Stetson’s season-ending win over Flagler College on November 6 marked her 125th career victory.

In her fi rst season at Stetson, Carlson helped guide the Hatters to 10 wins, including triumphs over South Alabama, Lehigh and UCF. In fact, Stetson’s 3-0 win over UCF on Oct. 30 was the Hatters’ fi rst victory over the Knights since 1987. Stetson surged late in the season with a 7-4 record over its fi nal 11 games.

Carlson arrived at Stetson following a 12-year stint at Virginia Commonwealth University, which included seven years as head coach and fi ve years as an assistant.

From 1995-2001, Carlson’s teams combined for a 86-133 record, including an 18-12 mark in 2000. For three years Carlson

also worked as an administrator in the VCU athletic department, serving as Director of Community Outreach, Life Skills Coordinator and Assistant Compliance Director.

Carlson has also coached the Richmond Volleyball Club Junior program, leading her team to a regional championship in fi ve out of six years and to a national tournament appearance for six straight years.

A former USA Volleyball player and coach, Carlson was the USAV Old Dominion Region Vice President and Eligibility Chair from 2002-04. She was responsible for the Coaching Development program as well as writing the region’s Mission, Vision and Values Statement.

Prior to her seven-year head-coaching stint, Carlson served as the VCU assistant coach for fi ve seasons. She helped coordinate all facets of the program, including scheduling, recruiting, fundraising and conditioning.

From 1983-88, Carlson served as athletics director, coach and teacher at Good Shepard Episcopal School, and later worked in the same capacity at Luther Memorial School (1988-90). She also served as an associate for the Governor’s Alliance for a Drug-Free Virginia Foundation from 1989-94.

A 1983 graduate of the University of Virginia, Carlson was a member of the Cavaliers varsity volleyball team from 1980-82. She has received two Master’s Degrees from VCU: A Master of Science in Exercise Physiology in 1995 and a Master of Science in Sports Leadership in 2002. Carlson is also a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Th e Stetson volleyball team is gearing up for the 2009 campaign, which features 29 regular season matches, 20 of them against Atlantic Sun Conference opposition. Th e Hatters, who have been picked 10th out of 11 teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason poll, will be looking to erase the bad memories of a lackluster 2008 season and move up in the conference standings.

FOLLOWING THE HATTERS

GoHatters.com, the offi cial website of Stetson Athletics, is proud to once again off er Hatter Vision with live video streaming of all home matches. Click on the Live Events tab at the top of any GoHatters.com page to log in or sign up. Celebrated Stetson broadcast voice Bill Topping, also the lead Hatter Vision broadcaster for baseball and women’s basketball, returns for his second season of live volleyball play-by-play and commentary at the Edmunds Center. Hatter Vision subscribers can also view this Saturday’s match at Georgia Southern and the September 12 contest at Campbell for no extra cost. Selected road matches in conference action will also be streamed live on A-Sun.TV. Fans wishing to follow the in-game box score for home matches can do so through the Live Stats tab located next to the Live Events tab.

MEET THE HATTERS

Head Coach Cheryl Carlson has nine letterwinners, fi ve newcomers and three others on a deep roster that blends senior leadership with exciting new talent.

“Our preseason has gone very well so far; the kids came in with a lot of excitement to improve upon last year and that has kept up throughout two-a-days,” Carlson said. “I know the players can’t wait to face somebody other than themselves. Personally, I’m enthused at the unprecedented depth we have since I’ve been here and by the fact that this is the tallest roster in Stetson history.”

SETTERS

Stetson will be employing its third diff erent primary setter in the last three years as freshman Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) is expected to claim the starting job. A heralded recruit from Northern Virginia, Carneal was the Group AA State Player of the Year and a Washington Post First Team All-Metro selection after leading Chancellor HS to a 24-3 record last season. She also earned MVP honors in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game earlier this summer. Also available

to set up the Hatter attack will be junior Megan Stewart (St. Augustine, Fla.), who walked onto the squad for the fi rst time last season to record 27 assists and 12 digs, including a 13-assist performance against Belmont. Senior walk-on Christie Johnson (Sebastian, Fla.) is another setter on the roster that could see action.

“Kelli can play up front on the block as well as run the team from the setter position,” Carlson noted. “She’s very calm but also very competitive – her four years here are going to be a lot of fun for our fans. Megan is going to see a lot of time on this court in the back row, but we may also have her set while Kelli hits. Our options are wide open thanks to those two.”

MIDDLE BLOCKERS

Stetson’s veteran strength this season is up front, where senior tri-captain Laura Boyd (La Crescenta,

Calif.) and sophomore Sam Freeman (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) anchor the middle. Boyd, the Stetson University Athletic Department’s R. Dale Melching Leadership Award winner for 2008-09, led the Hatters with 76 total blocks and was second on the team with 154 kills (leading all returnees) while Freeman contributed 121 kills, 73 blocks and team-high marks in attack percentage (.178) and solo blocks (10). Fellow sophomores Leslie Armstrong (Fern Park, Fla.), Ashley Rutherford (Satsuma, Fla.) and Sam Stonish (Stony Brook, N.Y.) provide the depth at middle blocker. Armstrong has yet to take the court in her third season while Stonish provided some pop to the team’s service game, notching 12 aces in her freshman year. Rutherford, a former Region 3-5A Player of the Year in Georgia, walks on to the Hatters for the fi rst time in 2009.

“I know Laura is excited for her senior season especially because she has so much help this time around – we only had two middles back when she was a freshman,” Carlson said. “Once we get Sam Freeman back and up to speed, she’s going to be a big weapon as well. Ashley, Leslie and Sam Stonish are all ready to step in and play this year; Stonish might get to play a little outside hitter as well.”

OUTSIDE HITTERS

With the graduation of Rebecca Orzechowicz, the bulk of the action at the outside hitter positions is expected to go to junior Stephanie Canfi eld (Panama City, Fla.) and sophomore Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.). Ream, who ranked fourth on the team with 126 kills, also displayed her versatility through a team-high 21 service aces along with 155 digs. Th e hard-hitting Canfi eld ripped off 144 kills last season and was an accurate statistical predictor of Stetson’s performance in 2008; the Hatters were 4-1 when she notched 10 kills or more. With these two the only true outside hitters on the roster, depth will truly Kaylee Ream

be a team project. Senior tri-captain Anna Becker (McLean, Ill.) and her 188 digs from a year ago are expected to help on the defensive side of things.

“Kaylee and Stephanie have worked very hard this summer and I am confi dent they’ll do a tremendous job this season. Sam and Anna can help out here as well,” said Carlson.

RIGHT SIDE

Coach Carlson has several intriguing options at right side this season with senior tri-captain Sarah Sears (Ashburn, Va.) leading the pack. Sears was a jack of all trades last year, ranking second on the team in assists (30) and aces (21) third in blocks (48) and notching 128 kills and 109 digs as well. Newcomers Madison Anderson and Brandy Worlton will surely be worked into the mix as well. Anderson, a freshman from La Cañada, California, has a strong track record of winning at the club and high school volleyball levels. Worlton, a native of Crystal River, Florida, transfers home after two years at A-Sun rival Campbell University where she appeared in 31 career matches. Th e tallest Hatter at 6’4”, she ranked fourth on the Camels in attack percentage as a freshman.

As Carlson’s notes on the position inform: “whoever plays the right side needs to be one of the best blockers on the team as well as be able to attack from diff erent angles. Sarah has the most experience here

while Brandy brings the superior height factor – she can block and hit over just about anyone. Madison comes in as a great off ensive player who has also improved her blocking skills signifi cantly in our short time in camp.”

LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST

While she may also see time at outside hitter, Becker is expected to take the #1 libero jersey to start the season following the graduation of two-year starter Melanie Boyer. Two years ago at Lincoln Land Community College in her native Illinois, Becker led the nation (NJCAA Division II) in digs. Freshman Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) will likely be in the mix at defensive specialist; a two-time First Team All-Desert Valley honoree, she was also part of a strong winning tradition with Arizona Juniors Volleyball Club. Johnson, sophomore Sabrina Dodd (Ocala, Fla.) and redshirt junior Jessica Pauszek (Deltona, Fla.) are also available to hit the fl oor and pick up key digs for the Hatters.

“Right now Anna is our libero and Monique will be at DS, but we can throw diff erent looks at our opponents by putting Anna on the block or on the outside and have Monique play libero,” Carlson said. “Both players are quite capable of multiple roles on this team. I can put Christie, Jessica or Sabrina at any position on the back row and feel comfortable in their ability to dig the ball and receive serves.”

SCHEDULE

Th e Hatters will face former conference rival Troy at 3 p.m. Friday in the season opener with host Georgia Southern along with Presbyterian on tap the following day.

Th e Holiday Inn Stetson Invitational kicks off the 14-match home schedule for the Hatters on Labor Day weekend as fi rst time foe Southern Illinois and eight-time defending MEAC champions Florida A&M descend on the Edmunds Center for two days of volleyball action. Stetson will take on SIU both Friday, Sept. 4 and Saturday, Sept. 5 while

contending with FAMU only on the 4th.

Th e 20-match grind of the Atlantic Sun conference schedule begins Th ursday, September 8 with a home match against defending regular season champions Florida Gulf Coast. Th e re-loading Eagles have been tabbed for third in the conference and to win the A-Sun Tournament, which they host Nov. 19-21 in Fort Myers, Fla. Stetson University Staff

Jeff Altier, a 24-year veteran of the Stetson University athletic department, is in his 14th year as Stetson’s athletic director. During his tenure, Altier has earned a reputation as an outstanding fund raiser and a leader with an eye on the future. Perhaps the crowning achievements of Altier’s professional career was the building of Stetson’s $4.5 million baseball facility, Melching Field at Conrad Park and its on-campus softball counterpart, Patricia Wilson Field. Built in conjunction with the City of DeLand, Melching Field is regarded as one of the nation’s premiere college baseball facilities. Th e stadium opened on Feb. 13, 1999.

Altier spearheaded funding and development plans for the celebrated complex, which opened in 2003 and capstoned in 2008 with its formal dedication and unveiling of the new softball team building. Altier was also at the forefront of the movement to secure new state-of-the-art fi eld lighting for both the softball and soccer fi elds in 2005. Stetson has taken great strides in the area of gender equity under Altier. Th e softball program has been elevated to major sport status and mirrors baseball in terms of scholarship numbers and staff . Additionally, both the men’s women’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis programs have seen a growth in scholarships.

Under his guidance, the Athletic Department has seen the addition of the Wilson Athletic Center, a $1.5 million health and wellness facility solely for the use of Stetson student-athletes. Altier was honored by the Daytona Beach News-Journal as the West Volusia Sportsperson of the Month for September 2004.

Prior to his current appointment, Altier served as associate athletic director for four years. He spearheaded the department’s development eff orts as well as oversaw athletic marketing and promotions, concessions and travel coordination. Altier also served as tournament manager at the NCAA Division I First and Second Round men’s basketball tournament games hosted by Stetson in 1993 and 1996 at the Orlando Arena.

Before his promotion, Altier was the director of athletic promotions and ticket manager. Th e captain of the nationally-ranked 1982 Hatter baseball team earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stetson. Upon wrapping up his Stetson baseball career, he spent two years as a player/coach developing the sport in Perth, Australia. He then returned to Stetson as an assistant coach before taking on administrative duties.

Altier’s family includes wife Sarah (Booker), a 1982 Stetson graduate, and children Heath, Brianne and Garrett.

Stetson University entered a new era of leadership in July 2009 when Dr. Wendy B. Libby became the university’s ninth president.

Formerly president of Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., the nation’s second-oldest women’s institution, Libby has had a broad career in higher education and private industry. An expert in strategic planning, she plans to build on Stetson’s values-centered heritage and tradition of academic excellence and community-engaged service learning while moving Stetson forward.

Prior to her six years at Stephens College, Libby served as vice president for business aff airs and chief fi nancial offi cer at Furman University, Greenville, S.C., from 1995 to 2003. She has 28 years of administrative and teaching experience in higher education, at institutions including Westbrook College (now part of the University of New England), the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Th e Ohio State University and Cornell University.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Libby earned her doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut. Her undergraduate degree, in Biology with a concentration in Genetics, is from Cornell University. She earned an MBA, with a concentration in Finance, from Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School of Management.

Libby is a member of numerous higher education organizations. Last fall, she led a delegation of six college presidents in a visit to Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea. In honor of her outstanding leadership, Libby received the 2007 Athena Award from the Columbia (Mo.) Chamber of Commerce Women’s Network for her support of women in realizing their full leadership potential and for contributing to the quality of life in the community. In May, she received the 2009 Outstanding Higher Education Professional Alumni Award at the University of Connecticut.

She and her husband, Dr. Richard M. Libby, have two sons, Glenn and wife Ginger, and Gregg and wife Lori, four grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, and three dogs. An avid reader, she enjoys cooking and entertaining.

The University ... Stetson University maintains a tradition of academic excellence within a friendly and informal atmosphere. Its spacious 170-acre campus, lined with palm and oak trees, is centrally located between two major Florida cities, Daytona Beach and Orlando.

Stetson combines the best of two educational worlds: the variety of a university coupled with the concern for individual development found at a small college. Included in the diverse undergraduate curriculum are 11 degree programs (fi ve bachelors, six masters and post-masters) and more than 60 majors.

Stetson ranks third among the South’s top regional universities for academic quality and fi fth in the best value category in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” for 2009.

Stetson is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Th e College of Arts and Sciences was awarded the fi rst private university Phi Beta Kappa chapter in Florida.

Campus living is important to Stetson students. Sharing experiences, learning to live in a community, and taking responsibility for shaping residence hall life are all part of the self discovery process that makes college exciting. 78 percent of all students live on campus.

The Faculty ... Th e Stetson “advantage” is its faculty. Th ey know their fi elds of study: 95 percent of faculty members hold Ph.D. or equivalent degrees. Th ey are accessible and involved in their students’ personal development.

The Students ... Over 2,000 undergraduates from more than 41 states and 40 foreign countries attend Stetson.
