liter class. Because once you hear the gr owl of the all-

new 2009 YZF-R1, it will become clear that this bike is

unlike anything before.

More than the next-generation R1, it represents

a major breakthrough in supersport technology…

and performance.

It’s all about power – delivery of power, to be exact.

That’s because the all-new R1 is the world’s first

production motorcycle with a crossplane crankshaft.

Originally pioneered in MotoGP racing with the M1,

crossplane technology puts each connecting rod journal

90 degrees from the next, with an uneven firing interval

of 270-180-90-180 degrees. The result? Incredibly

smooth, roll-on power delivery out of the corners with

outrageous amounts of torque for a rush like you’ve

never experienced before.

In fact, it’s like having two engines in one: the low-rpm

torquey feel of a twin with the raw, high-rpm power of

an inline four.

The all-new 2009 R1. More than a new bike. It’s a

whole new echelon of technology… and performance.

THE ALL-NEW 2009 R1:

THE BARK IS BAD. THE BITE IS BADDER.

THE UNEVEN FIRING

INTERVAL ADVANTAGE

THE COMPETITION’S VIEW

Then there’s the die-cast magnesium subrame and titanium mufers

to keep the weight down and the mass centralization up. The sound

that comes out o those lightweight cans is like nothing you’ve heard

beore rom a production motorcycle.

FOUR-WAY ADJUSTABILITY

The all-new R1 eatures a rear shock ad justable or both high- and

low-speed compression damping adjustability—so you can tune or

sharp bumps and sudden elevation changes independently. The R1

also gets hydraulic preload adjustment; just twist the knob.

TRACTION

A new swingarm with a lower pivot point (in an all-new main

rame) provides increased traction and eel during acceleration,

which exploits every bit o the new engine’s o-corner torque

while maintaining good steering eel.

AERODYNAMIC

The new R1 is covered in a bold new layered airing, designed to cut

the atmosphere cleanly and stu as much dense, high-pressure air

into the new engine’s airbox as possible through ram-air ducts in

the high-pressure areas outboard o the new projector headlights.

: CROSSPLANE CRANK: Proven in victory after

victory in MotoGP, the crossplane crank provides

a high-tech uneven firing interval. Unlike typical

inline-four designs where the two inner and two

outer pistons move together in 180-degree

intervals (flat crank), the crossplane crank positions

the big-end rod journals 90 degrees apart, with

a unique firing order of 270-180-90-180 degrees.

:OVERCOME INERTIA: The R1’s new crank

smoothes out fluctuations in inertial crankshaft

torque to provide very linear power delivery as

the engine’s combustion torque builds, giving

the rider more linear throttle response with

awesome power and traction out of the corners.

Not just new, the R1’s new crossplane crank

engine represents a complete paradigm shift.

: ELECTRONIC STEERING DAMPER:

Groundspeed, throttle opening and opening/closing

rate control a solenoid-equipped steering damper,

for rock-solid handling.

: D-MODE VARIABLE THROTTLE: In addition to

standard mode, a handlebar-mounted button lets

the rider select “A,” to emphasize low- to mid-

range engine response, or “B,” for situations

that require more delicate control.

: ADVANCED ECU: Electronic control mapping

of each individual cylinder’s ignition and fuel

injection timing makes the crossplane crank

viable, along with Yamaha Chip Control Intake

and Chip Control Throttle (YCC-I, YCC-T).

MAGNESIUM SUBFRAMEA cast magnesium subrame is evenlighter than aluminum and stronger.

PREDATORYHigh-speed air runs straight through thesteering head and into the airbox, where airvelocity becomes air pressure. Dual-stageuel injection and our exclusive YamahaChip Control Throttle (fy-by-wire) deliver asmooth rush o power all the way to the R6’sstratospheric redline.

MAXIMUM TUNABILITYBoth ends o the R6, including its piggybackreservoir rear shock, are adjustable orboth high- and low-speed compressiondamping—thebettertodeal withbothsharpbumps and sudden elevation changes.

YAMAHA CHIP CONTROL INTAKEAt lower revs, cylinders like longer intaketracts, so the R6’s unnels move downward. At higher revs and bigger throttle settings, the unnels are positioned in the tall setting, eectively giving the cylinders the shortintake tracts they preer at high rpm. Theend result is a broad, smooth powerband.

: YCC-I / YCC-T: Yamaha Chip Control Intake is

a variable intake-length system that broadens

the powerband and reinforces the R6’s amazing

high-rev hit. Yamaha Chip Control Throttle is

an advanced fly-by-wire system that translates

your wrist’s commands into seamless, smooth

power delivery under all conditions.

: DUAL-STAGE FUEL INJECTION: A dual-stage

injector system feeds 13.1:1compression

-ratio combustion chambers for right-now

throttle response and an uninterrupted

eruption of horsepower.

: SLIPPER CLUTCH: The R6’s ramp-type slipper

clutch greatly reduces engine braking for

smooth high-speed corner entries.

: LIGHTWEIGHT MATERIALS: Magnesium

subframe, titanium exhaust, Controlled Fill die

cast aluminum chassis parts—it adds up to

a bike that snaps into corners, clings to inside

lines and shoots itself down the next straight.

: POWER YOU CAN USE: A new 600cc fuel-

injected, high-compression four cylinder makes

maximum power at just 10,000 rpm, and max

torque at 9,000rpm; that’s the kind of linear

power that’s easily accessible and highly usable

on the street.

: ALL-NEW FRAME: An all-new diamond steel

frame keeps the seat low (so you can touch the

ground), bolts solidly to the engine at four points,

and is tuned for confident, sporty handling .

: LOOK THE PART: A full fairing looks great

and protects the rider; a 4-into-2-into-1 low-

mount exhaust system emits a nice raspy snarl

and contains a three-way catalytic converter

for low emissions.
