About the Frangies:

Leading up to the 2008 Jazz Fest, I was having a difficulty finding musical previews and highlights. I had

used Gambit, Offbeat, and the Times Picayne to help plan the few previous jazzfests I attended. But in

2008, the previews seemed to be absent or late. And so, in a panic, I did it myself. Searching the web,

listening to hundreds of bands, and spending over 20 hours over the two weeks leading up to Jazz Fest.

And I found it to be a great investment. I broadened my horizons, and it was the perfect appetizer for the

festival itself. I sent out recommendations to some friends, who dubbed them the frangies in reference to

my webalias, Freerangemike. And so, for 2009, I listened to every jazzfest band I could find online, andhighlighted a sampling of music Jazz Fest has to offer.

What the Frangies arent: A recipe for your Jazzfest. Ive got a mix of traditional New Orleans acts and

new acts. If youve already heard some of these acts, consider hearing someone new. And if you try to

overplan your Jazzfest, youre going to spend too much time stressing and traveling rather than absorbing.

What the Frangies are: The Frangies are a compilation of bands of all genres. I tried to remain objective,

providing a festival goer, while sampling food and culture, can also get a nice sample of the diverse music

that the Jazz and Heritage Festival has to offer. Its simply some suggestions for bands to hear if you feel

lost or overwhelmed.
