In MemoriamJudy Marie Frey Willis1950 – 2009

A special friend of Blank Children’s Hospital, Judy Willis died June 27, 2009 after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Judy was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Over the years, Judy volunteered on the Blank Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees and Lights Committee. She served in many ways and co-chaired the Festival of Trees and Lights Gala in 2005. You would often see Judy at many other Iowa Health Foundation events including the Rally Against Cancer where she and Rich were committee members since 2001. Judy also dedicated her time to other charities in the Des Moines area and is greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

Helen M. Johnson1911 – 2009

Many lives will be touched by the generosity of Helen Johnson. In one single, unselfi sh act, she provided a generous estate gift for Blank Children’s Hospital. Helen’s interest in healthcare and her desire to help children made Blank Children’s Hospital a logical place for her support. Helen and her husband, Newell, will be permanently recognized with the establishment of the Newell & Helen Johnson Endowment. Each year, the earnings from their endowment will support priority needs at Blank Children’s Hospital.

Together We Have...

Together we have provided benefi cial services and support at Iowa Health – Des Moines hospitals through the Iowa Health Foundation during 2009. Thanks to people like you, we received more than 8,000 gifts that added up to nearly $11.4 million to the Foundation last year.

This incredible outpouring of support helped Iowa Methodist, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Blank Children’s Hospital, John Stoddard Cancer Center, Taylor House Hospice, and the newest member of our family, Methodist West Hospital, provide healthcare to literally thousands of patients and their families last year. Here are just a few ways that our patients and families were helped by these wonderful gifts:

Once again, funds raised during the Rally Against Cancer enabled the John Stoddard Cancer Center to expand its Patient Care Coordinator Program, which helps patients and their families deal with multi-faceted care plans for treating cancer.

Both the Child Life and Advocacy & Outreach Programs continue their crucial work through funds raised during the Festival of Trees and Lights. These programs provided assistance to children and families from virtually every county in Iowa.

Capital needs at Iowa Lutheran Hospital continue to be met through your gifts to the “I Love ILH” campaign.

Your gifts to Iowa Health Hospice - Taylor House & Home Services helped make those last moments better by providing counseling sessions with the bereavement staff, stocking the family kitchen or providing relaxation kits for patients and caregivers.

Blank Children’s Hospital’s “Wishes Endowment” Campaign continued to make progress toward its $50 million goal, reaching $20 million in current gifts and an additional $16 million in future gifts. This endowment effort will ensure the future of Blank Children’s for its patients and families in perpetuity.

Thanks to the unwavering support of people like you, our dream of providing quality healthcare to patients and families in the western communities was realized October 26 with the opening of Methodist West Hospital.

Together, we have accomplished extraordinary things!

The generosity and support in our community for our hospitals and related entities last year is greatly appreciated. Our mission would not be fulfi lled without the tireless effort of those working on our behalf in 2009: our boards of directors, our campaign cabinet members, our many dedicated volunteers, but most of all, our donors.

Every donor should be very proud of the improvements and services your gifts helped provide to the health of our community. Together, we touched the lives of thousands of patients and families last year!

Eric Crowell

Each year donors generously support the hospital through bequests, charitable trusts, benefi ciary designation on annuities and IRAs plus many other unique giving methods. Iowa Health Foundation and the hospitals are deeply appreciative of each of these gifts.

Estate/Legacy gifts were received in 2009 from the following friends:

Steven Ray Condit, KnoxvilleSteve’s bequest was added to Blank Children’s Hospital Endowment to provide for the ongoing needs of children.

Marion DeVries, PellaIowa Methodist Medical Center was Marion’s hospital of choice. Marion included Iowa Methodist in his will to show his gratitude for the life long care he received at the hospital.

Helen Johnson, Webster CityHelen’s interests in healthcare led her to include a number of charities, including Blank Children’s Hospital, in her will. Her substantial gift will establish an endowment in her name and support essential programs for children where reimbursements only cover a fraction of the cost.

Catherine Juliano, West Des MoinesCatherine’s bequest supported the John Stoddard Cancer Center. Her gift along with many others helped make programs like the Cancer Care Coordinators possible.

Shirley Kading, Des MoinesShirley, a graduate of Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, generously included John Stoddard Cancer Center in her will. Her bequest will be used to support patient care programs that need extra funding and new cancer treatment equipment.

...Built a New Hospital

It is with a tremendous amount of pride that we offi cially opened the doors of Methodist West Hospital, our new community resource for medical care in central Iowa. Methodist West started as a vision more than 20 years ago

and on October 26, when the fi rst patient arrived, our vision to further serve our community became a reality.

Methodist West Hospital is a full service addition to the Iowa Health family, joining Iowa Methodist, Iowa Lutheran, Blank Children’s Hospital and John Stoddard Cancer Center along with nearly 45 physician and clinic offi ces across central Iowa.

The care that will be provided for generations to come continues the mission and tradition of Iowa Health – Des Moines: “To improve the health of our community through healing, caring and teaching.” We appreciate that our patients have a choice of where they receive their healthcare. We have built the Iowa Health family to be able to provide the healthcare our community needs, whenever they need it, at a location that is most convenient for them and their families.

Gifts totalling more than $3.5 million from individuals, foundations, and corporations to the “Continuing the Vision, Serving our Community” capital campaign have enabled the hospital to be a state-of-the-art facility, providing access to quality, convenient healthcare for patients and families well into the next century.

Just as generous donors helped to build Blank Children’s Hospital, John Stoddard Cancer Center, and Younker Rehabilitation Center, the opportunity to support a new hospital is unique and we are thankful for those who are a part of the history of healthcare in Iowa.

Quality healthcare is a cornerstone of a growing and vibrant community. We are pleased to bring expert healthcare closer to where you live. Your gifts and support of Methodist West Hospital sends a strong message to the community about the importance of providing the best care possible in a location that is close to home.

Many families are touched by the compassion of others. At Blank Children’s Hospital more than 275 families were impacted by the Ryan Taylor Endowment Fund.

When your child has a life threatening disease, the last thing you want is to be concerned about how to get your child to the hospital for their weekly treatments. It’s heartbreaking to see families struggling because they don’t think they can make it for their appointments.

“The gas cards we received eased a burden and allowed us the freedom to concentrate solely on his care and treatment.”

A Blank Children’s Hospital Patient’s Parent

Thankfully, there are donors like Jan and Lloyd Taylor who established an endowment that helps families with gas, food and sometimes lodging.

Both Jan and Lloyd were raised to give back to their communities. When Lloyd retired in 2002, their involvement in the community included donations of not only their talent but also their treasure — including increased giving to Blank Children’s Hospital.

It was during their retirement that disaster struck — their grandson, Ryan, was diagnosed with Leukemia. The fi rst six months of his three-year treatment was intense and required weekly visits to the oncologist and hospitals. The Taylors were fortunate to be able to rent an apartment in Denver and offer their support during this diffi cult time. The ability to be close to their son and his family was invaluable. It was during their weekly trips for treatments that they realized so many families weren’t as fortunate and had diffi culty getting their sick children to their appointments.

The need is everywhere, so following a hospital tour and visiting about the compassion fund and needs, especially for rural patients, Jan and Lloyd established the Ryan Taylor Endowment. Over the past four years, more than 890 families have been provided assistance.

Ryan, now 13, fi nished treatment last July. The entire Taylor family is grateful to be able to give back to their community, help make a difference for other families and leave a lasting legacy.

...Paid It Forward

For Dave and Tamara Hubler of West Des Moines, each day is about giving back to those who showed them support and provided Dave with the courage to keep fi ghting.

Dave and Tamara met in college and both enjoyed successful careers that took them to different areas of the United States. After raising a son and daughter they moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia. It was in Virginia, as they were contemplating retirement that the direction of their lives would change.

In 1999, after a routine blood test, Dave’s protein levels were elevated. Not ones to overreact, the Hublers cautiously watched his protein levels over the next few months. Unfortunately, in March 2001, Dave was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer that begins in malignant plasma cells and manifests by creating tumors within your bones. Their lives were changed forever. From that moment on Dave would be known as a cancer survivor, and Tamara would be his rock throughout the cancer journey. Both wanted the best possible outcome and aggressively read everything they could fi nd to understand the cancer, its treatments, and what they could expect.

Dave’s battle with cancer started with chemotherapy treatment and a stem cell transplant in the Fall of 2001. After a long, six-month recovery process they moved back to the Midwest. The John Stoddard Cancer Center infl uenced their decision of where to live. Dave and Tamara considered living near their daughter. However, the closest comprehensive cancer center that could provide the care, if needed, would be two hours away. They quickly discovered that not only does Stoddard provide the same level of comprehensive care as other leading cancer centers from across the nation, but it has some of the most highly-trained and professional staff. This provides great comfort to the Hubler’s and their family. Dave is now managing his cancer thanks to advances in medication.

Dave’s journey with his blood cancer has led both he and Tamara to show support with their time, talent and treasures. Their support of the John Stoddard Cancer Center is summarized best, “We would rather donate their money to a place they’ve experienced rather than a faceless place — simply put, the cancer center saved Dave’s life.“ In addition to supporting Stoddard Cancer Center through philanthropy, they are also active members of the Blood Cancer Support Group which meets monthly at Stoddard, sharing their knowledge and experiences with survivors, families, and caregivers both locally and nationally.

As annual supporters of the Rally Against Cancer, they chose to expand their circle of friends and bring nurses, support group members and even their favorite pizza guy! “Stoddard is a tremendous resource for central Iowa” says Dave. He wants to make sure the support he’s received is paid forward.

6

The John Stoddard Cancer Center received a grant for more than $28,000 from Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This funding will provide awareness and education to underserved minority populations in Polk County, breast health materials to women going through treatment, and additional psychological support to breast cancer patients and families.

It is anticipated that approximately 1,800 women will benefi t from the support provided as a result of this grant. Regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or age, all women deserve the right care at the right time throughout the cancer journey. Together, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and John Stoddard Cancer Center can make this possible.

Scott and Andrea have a new lease on life. They asked for and found the help they needed to save their lives individually and have a brand new beginning that included becoming a family. Their recent family addition

arrived fi ve months ago — Ava Marie.

As is true with so many families, they have had their share of hard times. Unfortunately, Scott and Andrea have seen family members die from alcoholism at very young ages. A treatment program at Powell Chemical Dependency Center (CDC) at Iowa Lutheran provided healing for them. Those who have been negatively affected by addiction can learn to understand chemical dependency and receive support. Following treatment, concerned persons can better cope with the stress caused by addiction. Without treatment, the family illness can continue to progress. Recovery for family members can occur even if the chemically dependent person keeps using.

This young family has truly been blessed and given a fresh start. They are ready to pay it forward. Their motivation to support Iowa Lutheran Hospital was infl uenced by the kind, loving, and compassionate staff as well as their personal experiences within the hospital family. Their experience with doctors and staff was exceptional.

“Every professional was kind and always kept the patient at the forefront of their mind. When concerned, their doctors took the time to explain, comfort and support family members with appropriate resources.”

Scott and Andrea joined a special group of donors when they decided to support the Powell CDC at Iowa Lutheran. The Center provides services for the safety and well-being of many in our community including:

• Personalized evaluations

• Inpatient and outpatient care

• Medical detoxifi cation under strict supervision

• Individualized treatment planning

• Family programs

• Interdisciplinary counseling and education

• Powell III Alumni Association

Serving more than 30,000 patients and their family members since opening in 1973, sensitive issues surround the use of chemicals and privacy is important to recovery. Powell CDC allows individuals to work with their families and signifi cant others to rebuild lives impacted by the uncertainty, pain, loss, helplessness and fear created by drug abuse.

The 2009 Rally Against Cancer fundraiser was held January 26 with more than 500 people in attendance. During the fun-fi lled evening, more than $186,000 was raised.

The highlight of the evening was welcoming former Coe College athlete and NFL Hall-of-Fame Coach Marv Levy back to Iowa. Coach Levy was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his fi rst year of eligibility in 2001. He will be remembered not only as the winningest coach in Buffalo Bills history and a Hall of Fame football coach, but also as one of the NFL’s classiest individuals. Levy not only molded football players but he also molded men of character, class and pride.

The Rally Against Cancer raises funds to help patients and families of the John Stoddard Cancer Center. The 2009 funds were used for the expansion and continued support of the John Stoddard Cancer Care Coordinator Program. This program is provided at no charge to patients and is entirely funded through philanthropy. These funds will help the John Stoddard Cancer Center continue to lead the way in cancer care for central Iowa.

Mark your calendars today and plan to join us for the 2011 Rally Against Cancer on January 29 at the Iowa Events Center. Watch for more information coming soon about our guest speaker.

The 2009 Iowa Lutheran Hospital Westerberg event was our 18th annual celebration. More than $75,000 was raised in support for Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Specifi cally this year, the proceeds will benefi t the “I Love ILH” Capital Improvements Fund.

The Westerberg Celebration is a great opportunity for the entire Lutheran family to celebrate as one. We are pleased to have support at Westerberg from: physicians, administration, employees, nurse alumni, volunteers, Auxiliary members, community friends and our business partners.

In addition, we honor a philanthropist of the year. The 2009 Coskery Award for Philanthropy winners were Dr. John and Karen Heffernan. We were pleased to honor these very special people for their many years of support for Iowa Lutheran Hospital. The Coskery Award is given each year to an individual or organization who has supported Iowa Lutheran Hospital through their ongoing fi nancial gifts.

Join us for the 2010 Westerberg Celebration on April 22 at the Marriott Downtown as we honor and celebrate the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary as we celebrate their 100th Anniversary.

The 26th Annual Blank Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees and Lights was a huge success in 2009. More than $350,000 was raised in support of Child Life and the Center for Advocacy and Outreach.

Child Life was established in 1991 to make every child’s medical experience as physically and emotionally positive as possible. The Child Life staff helps children fi nd ways to cope with anxiety, fear and separation from friends and family while helping them gain confi dence to face any procedure or challenge on their journey. Child Life services are used across the hospital.

The Center for Advocacy and Outreach was created and has continued to grow in order to provide outreach programs that address children’s health and safety needs. Key initiatives include safety and injury prevention, children’s healthcare, grassroots advocacy, healthy lifestyles, early literacy and child abuse prevention.

Martha James, 2009 Honorary Chair; the planning committee; tree decorators; and the hundreds of volunteers who generously donated their time and talents to make this event such a success are greatly appreciated.

Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, Iowa Realty, for their continued support at that level over the past four years.

By investing in the health of our community, we made a difference for our patients. During September 2009, nearly 1,025 employees invested in healthcare excellence through the Employee Giving Campaign by contributing more than $627,000 to the Iowa Health Foundation. Their contributions support various programs at the Iowa Health Foundation, Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Blank Children’s Hospital, Methodist West Hospital, John Stoddard Cancer Center, Taylor House Hospice, United Way and Variety, The Children’s Charity.

Special thanks to our employee donors for Making Magic Happen in 2009!

The Des Moines Botanical Center was transformed into a tropical paradise for the second annual Hula for Hospice on November 6, fi lled with island music, hula dancing, delicious food and exotic drinks. Hospice volunteers helped with invitations, gathering auction items and decorations. More than 120 people attended and had a great time while supporting Iowa Health Hospice. All proceeds from the silent auction support the work of the Iowa Health Hospice Good Samaritan Fund, which provides fi nancial assistance to patients at Taylor House and in their homes. Through generous gifts to this fund, no one is turned away from receiving our care and given the dignity they deserve in their dying days.

Iowa Health Hospice also honored the recipient of the Iowa Health Hospice Volunteer of the Year, Debbie Baier. Debbie provides respite for caregivers and is a loyal friend and compassionate listener for her patients. No matter what the request, Debbie is always willing to accept the challenge.

In addition to helping patients and their families, she assists with many special projects. Last spring, she used her talents to illustrate a children’s coloring book for our bereavement team. Her compassion, dependability, creativity and willingness to help in every situation make her an extremely valuable part of the Iowa Health Hospice Team.

We celebrate the spirit, life and ongoing contributions of Juliann Ploessl, Chief Nurse Executive for Iowa Health – Des Moines, who passed away August 26, 2009 after a courageous fi ght with cancer.

Julie was with Iowa Health – Des Moines for 21 years in a variety of nursing and management roles. During the last eight years as our Chief Nurse Executive, she was deeply involved with nursing care, clinical practice, patient care services, and quality improvement initiatives.

Most importantly, Julie helped guide our organization in collaborative efforts to focus on providing outstanding and compassionate patient care. A steadfast patient and family advocate, she was a role model for nurses and the nursing profession. Julie continually ignited us to achieve our potentialand improve our knowledge and skills.

As a person, Julie had courage, compassion, love of family, a big heart and a warm smile. She was universally loved and respected by everyone — physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers. It may have been because she accepted people as they were, found and encouraged their strengths, and valued everyone’s contributions to patient care while helping others to realize their own self worth.

Julie listened with an open ear, spoke with wisdom, served with a generous heart, and lived life with courage. In remembering Julie, one staff member simply said “I feel grateful to have known her.”

We will honor Julie as we go forward by continuing to keep teamwork, listening and collaboration at the forefront of all we do. Every time we care for a patient, are blessed to be part of a new birth, or take time to comfort and help families, Julie will stand beside us.

Julie reminded us that we each have gifts that are uniquely ours — our unique energy, spirit and grace create waves that extend far beyond us. Julie’s ‘waves’ will continue to make our patient and family care better for years to come.

We are so much better because she was with us for so long. We will continue to make Julie proud.

Volunteering at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Blank Children’s Hospital, Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Methodist West makes a difference for our patients, families and staff. More than 3,000 volunteers are on call for our hospitals and we are very fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers.

Ambassador Volunteers greet and escort patients, families and visitors to various locations throughout the hospitals. Our volunteers in the surgery departments assist patient family members and each patient coming in for surgery while working directly with the surgery staff. The Gift Shop volunteers assist in the sale of items in the gift shop and provide customer service to all visitors and staff. Many other volunteers deliver fl owers and mail to patients to brighten their rooms or complete projects for staff throughout the hospitals.

Although volunteering is serious business, we make time to celebrate, encourage and reward the men and women in red and blue vests. There are appreciation luncheons, events and get-togethers. The Volunteers become great friends while sharing a common goal and passion for making a difference.

The Iowa Lutheran Hospital Volunteen Program, originated as the Candy Striper Program in 1966. Duties at that time included folding ‘Future Nurse’ hats for young visitors and assisting in the day care. In 1976, the program

name was changed to refl ect the uniforms, duties, and make-up of students.

Their role has expanded to include more than 20 different tasks. Several of their current duties include visiting with patients, labeling out-patient surgery charts, folding and wrapping surgery towels, and delivering cards and fl owers.

Currently the program consists of 80 active teens that range in ages from 14 to 18. The program runs after school Monday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:30 and allows teens to make a difference in the lives of our patients, visitors, and staff.

Now in its 44th year, the program has spanned the generations who now encourage their sons and daughters to take part. Even siblings look forward to joining the program when they reach 14. Volunteering defi nitely becomes a family adventure.

Madison Gray was encouraged to join the program by her grandmother and inspired by her family who are employees of Iowa Lutheran Hospital. In June 2006, when she turned 14, she joined the Volunteen Program and has since volunteered more than 230 hours creating and delivering Care Club fl ower arrangements, visiting with patients, and other various activities at the hospital.

The teens join the centralized program to serve others, lend a helping hand and boost spirits of those around them all while working as a team. While they are here they gain experience in working in a health care environment and have the opportunity to hear about different health care careers. Most volunteens graduate from high school and pursue a degree in the medical fi eld and over the years and have come back to work for Iowa Health Des Moines as employees.

Although Madison is graduating this Spring, and will be pursuing a degree in Elementary Education, her experience with the Volunteen Program has instilled the need for community service and will be continuing helping those in need.

The new Blank Children’s Hospital Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care Ambulance is dedicated for the transport of critically-ill and injured children and infants. Pediatric and neonatal transport teams accompany the ambulance to provide specialized care for infants and children. The ambulance, which was built in Sumner, Iowa by Life Line, features a quad cab to safely accommodate the transport of family members in addition to the ability to transport more than one patient. It operates like a mobile critical care unit, and can operate independently with a generator for 24 hours, if necessary.

“The ambulance was truly made possible because of community support. Variety – The Children’s Charity of Iowa made a leadership donation to Blank Children’s, with additional support from The Iowa Clinic, the City of West Des Moines, R&R Realty and the West Des Moines EMS Association,” said David Stark, president and chief operating offi cer, Blank Children’s Hospital. “We are thrilled to have the support of our community in our vision to implement a pediatric ambulance for infants and children from across the state.”

The holiday season is a stressful time for anyone, especially for those who are grieving. While the holiday season often prompts memories of family and friends, feelings of joy and excitement are sometimes replaced with feelings of loneliness and sadness when you are mourning the death of a loved one. Iowa Health Hospice provided an opportunity for those suffering the loss of a loved one at “Lights of Love” held in December.

The evening included a presentation on dealing with grief during the holiday season, followed by a Tree of Life lighting ceremony and memorial service. The Tree of Life remained lit through the end of the year at the Des Moines Botanical Center, allowing people to visit and spend time in refl ection of their loved ones. All proceeds from “Lights of Love” benefi tted the Iowa Health Hospice – Bereavement Program, providing counseling, support groups and classes for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one at the Taylor House or in their home.

Lowell Marshall, longtime volunteer, donor and friend of Iowa Lutheran Hospital recently made a generous gift in memory of his wife and soulmate, Marcia Meyers Marshall. His gift to the “I Love ILH” Capital Improvements Fund is a great honor to Marcia and his love of the hospital.

The Marshalls farmed in Dallas County and all fi ve of their children were born at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Lowell is blessed to have 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Motivated by his Christian faith, Lowell can be seen volunteering Tuesday afternoons at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, singing in the men’s choir or passing out Snickers to his friends. He has been a volunteer for the past 38 years.

She has many titles: Olympic gold medalist, West Des Moines native, former champion of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” And now Shawn Johnson has another title she’s proud to add to her list: philanthropist.

Featured as a celebrity guest on the 10th anniversary edition of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” Shawn was presented with the opportunity to win $50,000 to donate to the charity of her choice. She had to answer a single question correctly to gain the prize and did so with fl ying colors.

Shawn chose to donate her winnings to Blank Children’s Hospital, where she received routine care during her childhood.
