Athletic Director

Don Brubacher

On July 30, 2008, Don Brubacher was named the fi ft h athletic director in the past 54 years at Hillsdale College. Following the strong character and tradition established by people like Jack McAvoy and Dr. Mike Kovalchik is no small task, but it’s one Brubacher has fully embraced entering his second year on the job.

“I’ve been extremely impressed with the quality of coaches, athletes and staff we have here at Hillsdale. Th ey have made this a very easy transition for me,” Brubacher said. “I not only want to maintain the great athletic tradition we have here, but to help our coaches achieve greater success in the future.”

Brubacher knew plenty of success in his nine-year stint as athletic director at Tabor College, an NAIA school located in Hillsboro, Kansas. An alumn of the school, Brubacher coached men’s and women’s basketball at Tabor, as well as men’s and women’s soccer during a career that saw him spend nearly 30 years on the fi eld of play. He takes a lot of pride in his classroom teaching experience as well, and draws many parallels between the experience a college student has in the classroom compared to that on the athletic fi eld.

“Our national search has produced an individual with an impressive understanding of the role that athletics plays in the formation of student character and how character development is essential to the mission of our institution,” said Hillsdale College President Dr. Larry Arnn. “In addition, we have found a man with a long, proven record of success in leading a college athletic program. Don Brubacher will be a perfect fi t here.”

Brubacher’s coaching career saw him earn many Coach of the Year accolades, and he led his men’s basketball teams to 12 conference championships. His women’s soccer teams also won a regular season conference championship, and a postseason tournament conference title.

Brubacher started his college career at Heston College in Kansas, where he played soccer. He then moved on to Tabor College and played soccer and basketball, and was a First-Team All-Conference selection in basketball before his graduation in 1975.

Senior tight end Matt Patillo (80) is an important part of what could be an explosive off ense for Hillsdale College in 2009.

Season Preview:

Reloaded

Chargers ready

to launch in 2009

Th e evolution of a college football program is a continual process. Even teams that win championships look to retool the following season. Th e Hillsdale Col-lege football team has undoubtedly turned a corner over the past two seasons. But that progress - in the form of 15 wins in two years - isn’t enough to satisfy head coach Keith Otterbein.

Entering his eighth season leading the Charger team, Otterbein has returned the team to contender status in the GLIAC aft er Hillsdale endured a 10-year stretch with nine losing seasons. Hillsdale has racked up a 15-7 record over the past two seasons, and the 2009 season carries with it promise for even more wins, and dogged pursuit of an NCAA Division II playoff spot.

“I feel real good about the kids we have in the program today. Th eir talent, work ethic and character all fi t the mold of what goes into a championship-level football team,” Otterbein said. “Our wins have increased over the past couple years, but I know we’ve let some games slip away from us too. Th is year, we want to be better at fi nishing and turning those close losses into wins.”

Hillsdale will boast of one of the most experienced group of skill-position players on off ense of any team in the GLIAC this season. Quarterback Troy Weatherhead enjoyed a productive fi rst season as the starter in 2008, throw-ing for 2,874 yards and 21 touchdown passes. He had three 300-yard passing games, and will have nearly his full complement of weapons at his disposal this year that he had last year.

Protecting Weatherhead on the off ensive line will be one of the top players at his position in the country, senior Jared Veldheer. A left tackle and second-year team captain, Veldheer has NFL potential, and stands 6-foot-8 with superior athletic ability and footwork. Th e Chargers have had one of the highest-scoring and most well-balanced off enses in the GLIAC each year he’s started.

Running behind many of Veldheer’s blocks is third-year starting tailback Vinnie Panizzi. In his two seasons as a starter, Panizzi has rushed for nearly 2,200 yards and brings his move-the-chains, punishing running style to the Charger off ense.

Th ree of the team’s top four wide receivers return, and each bring a diff erent style to their positions, making them extremely tough for defenses to game-plan for. Junior Andre Holmes is the team’s tallest (6-5) receiver, and is a big-play threat every time he touches the football. Senior A.J. Kegg led the team in catches (74) and receiving yards (888) last year, and assumed a much bigger role in the off ense. Junior Mike Blanchard has established himself as a tough and reliable slot receiver.

Tight end Matt Patillo is another important cog in the off ense and returns for his third season starting at that position. He caught 29 passes and scored four touchdowns in 2008, making him one of the GLIAC’s most productive tight ends.

On defense, the most experienced position is without question the defensive line, where six players with at least three years starter-level experience apiece return.

Senior Drew Berube, who led the GLIAC in sacks and tackles-for-loss last year, was tabbed the Preseason Division II Defensive Player of the Year by the Consensus Draft Services. Berube, a graduate of Hillsdale High School, is a strong, rangy defensive end who is diffi cult for any off ensive lineman to con-tain.

Joining Berube on the defensive line are veterans Jordan Knudsen, Andrew

Yarbrough, Mark Yassay and Kam Mueller who bring nearly 14 combined years of starting experience to the defensive line position.

Leading the linebacker position is team captain Mat Szula, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2008. He is one of the team’s hardest tacklers and possesses a knack for making game-turning plays.

Sophomore Nate English leads a group of several young but emerging play-ers on defense, and fi gures into the team’s starting plans for 2009. Senior Lance Smith, a three-year starter at defensive back, will serve as the third captain of this year’s team. Smith is a steady presence for the defense, a quality that will serve the team even more in 2009 with several younger players playing more prominent roles on the team. Nick Hixson, Joe Vear and David Bakker lead a young and hungry group of defensive players determined to make an impact on the 2009 Chargers.

One of Hillsdale’s strengths fi gures to be its special teams, led by All-GLIAC placekicker Mark Petro and All-GLIAC punter Eric Schweller. Petro led the conference in fi eld goals last year, while Schweller had the top punting average in the conference in 2008.

Recruit. Player. Starter. Leading tackler. Award winner. Alumn. Assistant coach. Rival coach. Mentor. Head coach. For more than half of his adult life, Keith Otterbein has fi lled vir-tually every imaginable role for the Hillsdale College football program.

Now entering his eighth season as the leader of the Charger program, Otterbein has the rare combination of peace-of-mind for where he’s taken the team since he took over, and the burning desire to return the team to postsea-son play.

“It’s been very gratifying to see the success our program has had over the past two years,” Otterbein said, referring to the team’s 15-7 re-cord in 2007 and 2008. “But I also know we have the talent to participate in the postseason, and that remains the goal of everyone associ-ated with this team.”

Including a very successful nine-year run with Ferris State, Otterbein sits just two wins away from 100 for his coaching career. He’s led Hillsdale College to its fi rst set of back-to-back winning seasons since 1995 and 1996, and has fully stocked the program with talent on both sides of the ball.

Th at talent is refl ected in the success of re-cent graduates, like Mark Nicolet, currently the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Blizzard for afl 2, and Tom Korte, who signed a two-year contract with the defending Su-per Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Cur-rent players Jared Veldheer, Drew Berube and Mark Petro have garnered attention from NFL scouts, and achieved pre-season All-American honors.

“I am fortunate to work with a staff that has a great work ethic, sets a great example for our players, and can recruit to this school,” Ot-terbein said. “Th e work those guys put in the off season has been refl ected in our won-loss record over the past two years.”

Otterbein’s relationship with Hillsdale began when he was recruited out of Southfi eld-Lath-rup High School by beloved former coach and

athletic director Jack McAvoy. Otterbein played for the Chargers from 1975-78 and went on to become the fi rst player in school history to be named the team’s best linebacker three years in a row. He also earned the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete award while play-ing for Hillsdale.

He didn’t wait long aft er graduating to get into the coaching profession. He put in time as a position coach under Dick Lowry at Hills-dale, and College Football Hall of Famer Herb Deromedi at Central Michigan University.

Aft er an apprenticeship under two highly acclaimed coaches, Otterbein made his mark by becoming the youngest head college foot-ball coach in the nation when he was hired by Ferris State University before the 1986 sea-son. Taking the job at the age of 28, Otterbein quickly turned the Bulldogs into a national power, winning 30 of his last 36 games coached at the school and guiding the team to three Di-vision II playoff appearances. He was named the Regional Coach of the Year following the 1992 and 1994 seasons at Ferris State.

Otterbein then got a taste of coaching at the Division I level, leading the running backs at Ball State University from 1995-2001. A return

to Hillsdale awaited in December 2001, when Otterbein was named the program’s sixth head coach since 1954.

Since returning to his alma mater, Otterbein has spent considerable time upgrading the pro-gram’s facilities. A complete locker room reno-vation was fi nished in time for the 2007 season, wrapping up a four-year campaign. Lettering was added to the face of the press box, and signage highlighting Hillsdale’s bowl-game ap-pearances now adorn the stadium, thanks pri-marily to Otterbein’s eff orts.

“It’s special for me to come back to the college I attended, and to be in the position I’m in,” Ot-terbein said. “I believe in the mission of Hills-dale and the education kids will receive when they come to our school. I also think they’re going to be part of a pretty good football team and form great memories while they’re here.”

Keith and his wife Amy have been married for 29 years. Th eir oldest son Steve, a 2007 Hillsdale College graduate, is entering his third season as part of the football coaching staff at Eastern Michigan University. Th eir son Brad is a junior on this year’s Charger football team, while daughter Alyssa graduated from Hills-dale College in May.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

CRAIG BLANCHARD

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

BARRY FAGAN

Now entering his fi ft h season as the defensive coordinator for the Hillsdale College football program, Craig Blanchard has led a resurgence of the defense that has produced excellent sta-tistics in recent years, along with a high number of individual accolades for players on his side of the ball.

Blanchard brings intensity to his coaching style every day at practice, and during each game. As the defensive unit has improved its overall per-formance over the past few years, players like Tom Korte and Drew Berube have earned indi-vidual recognition.

Korte, a four-year starter at linebacker under Blanchard, signed with the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the spring of 2009.

Berube was named the preseason Division II National defensive player of the year by the Consensus Draft Services. Berube is entering his fourth season as a starter on the defensive line.

A football-coaching lifer, Barry Fagan prac-tices his craft with equal parts passion and phi-losophy.

Th e Chargers’ off ensive coordinator has en-joyed a wide-ranging experience in coaching college football, in several positions at both Di-vision I and II levels. But here at Hillsdale, Fagan has found a comfort zone, and particularly in the past two years, a great amount of success.

Th roughout his coaching career, Fagan has unleashed explosive off enses on the GLIAC. In 1995, he guided a Ferris State off ense that was ranked No. 1in the nation in Division II, and made it to the national semifi nals. In 2007, Fa-gan took the Charger off ense on a scoring run unprecedented in the school’s 118-year history, setting several single-season off ensive records. In 2008, with a fi rst-year starting quarterback and young players throughout the lineup, Fagan helped lead the team to 365 points scored, one of the fi nest off ensive seasons in school history.

Fagan’s playing career took him to Penn State University, where he was a wide receiver under the guidance of legendary head coach Joe Pa-terno. Although his playing career was cut short

In 2007, Blanchard coached the defense to one of its fi nest performances in years in a 37-0 shut-out of a powerful Michigan Tech team. It was Hillsdale’s fi rst shutout victory in 11 seasons.

Blanchard is proud of his local roots, having been a standout running back at nearby Jones-ville High School in the 1970s. He led the state in rushing yards as a senior before competing collegiately at Grand Valley State University. He later returned to Hillsdale to begin his coaching career under former Chargers’ head man Dick Lowry.

Blanchard would go on to coach a number of successful players at programs like Eastern Michigan, Saginaw Valley State and the Univer-sity of Indianapolis. While at UIndy, Blanchard guided two players who would go on to be named First-Team All-American.

Th ree of Blanchard’s children have competed in athletics at the collegiate level. His oldest daughter, Lauren (24), played soft ball at Adrian

College. Daughter Kathryn, a standout at Hills-dale High School, recently completed a four-year career playing soft ball at the University of Indianapolis. Son Michael is a junior wide re-ceiver on this year’s Charger team, while young-est son Aaron will be a senior Hillsdale High School. Craig’s wife Melanie works as a nurse at the Hillsdale Community Health Center.

because of an injury, he retained enough from that Nittany Lion coaching staff to enter the fi eld himself shortly aft er graduating.

He joined forces with Keith Otterbein at Ferris State University in 1986, where the two teamed up to lead the Bulldogs to one of their most suc-cessful eras in program, history.

As off ensive coordinator at Ferris State, Fagan guided the career of Bill Love, who in 1995, fi n-ished as the runner-up in the Harlon Hill Trophy balloting, the Division II version of the Heisman Trophy. Th at Bulldog team led the nation in of-fense in 1995 under Fagan’s careful leadership.

Fagan and Otterbein reunited at Hillsdale Col-lege prior to the 2002 season. Since then, they have worked tirelessly to reestablish the winning tradition of Charger football, and the team’s 15-7 record over the past two seasons is evidence that the winning ways are back.

“To watch a game plan come together aft er a week’s worth of preparation is a great feeling,” Fagan said.

Fagan and his wife Amy have a nine-year-old daughter, Maura.

Aaron Shreffl er is entering his third season coaching the Chargers’ defensive line. He previously served at Georgia Southern, where he coached the off ensive line.

He played for Ohio University from 1992-97 under head coach Jim Grobe. Shreffl er joins his brother Nate on the Charger coaching staff for the third year. Th e two brothers coach opposing positions - the off ensive line and defensive line.

In 2009, the defensive line fi gures to be a position of strength for the Chargers, with as many as seven players getting starter-level playing time. . Young players have thrived under Shreffl er’s coaching, with returning starters Drew Berube and Jordan Knudsen making strong contributions to the unit since they were true freshmen.

A 1993 graduate of Hillsdale College, Nate Shreffl er enters his ninth season on the Charger staff , coaching the position he once played, off ensive line. Shreffl er joins Keith Otterbein as the only Hillsdale alumns currently on the full-time football staff , and Shreffl er is the longest-tenured coach on the current staff .

Over the past few years, Shreffl er’s off ensive lines have been among the conference leaders in fewest sacks allowed. One of his players, junior Jared Veldheer, was picked as a preseason Division II All-American by Th e Sporting News.

Shreffl er was part of a strong off ensive line under former head coach Dick Lowry from 1989-92. He helped lead the way for Jeff Cameron, Hillsdale’s No. 3 all-time leading rusher. Shreffl er played on the off ensive line back in November 1989, when Cameron set a school single-game rushing record with 295 yards vs. the University of Indianapolis.

John Lindley enters his fi ft h season coaching the Hillsdale College linebackers. His previous coaching stops have included Central Michigan University, Tiffi n University, Michigan Tech University and Eastern Michigan University.

An enthusiastic and passionate coach, Lindley hits the practice fi eld with one standing philosophy: “We will be the most aggressive linebacking unit in football.” Under Lindley’s guidance, linebacker Tom Korte put together an outstanding four-year career for the Chargers, and signed with the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the spring.

Lindley was an assistant coach at CMU under newly elected College Football Hall of Famer Herb Deromedi in 1991 when the Chippewas upset then-No. 18 ranked Michigan State, 20-3. In the summer of 2006, Lindley enjoyed one of the great experiences of his life when he observed U.S. Marine Corps training procedures at the base in Quantico, Va.

A popular, veteran member of the coaching staff , Pat Hornak plays an important role in the day-to-day running of the Charger football program.

Pat is entering his second season as the tight ends and H-backs coach, in addition to his widely ranging duties as director of football operations.

In his fi rst season of coaching the H-backs and tight ends in 2007, Pat played an instrumental role in Hillsdale’s record-breaking off ense. Both of those positions play critical roles in the diversity and depth of the Charger off ense.

Pat’s responsibilities as DFO include equipment maintenance and repair as well as game and practice video responsibility. Pat joined the Hillsdale College football program as a player in 1999, and is in his eighth season as part of the team’s coaching staff .

Th is year, Pat’s nephew Tim joins the Charger program as a freshman off ensive lineman.

Claudette Charney is entering her eighth season with the Hillsdale Col-lege athletic department, fi lling the roles of both head women’s basketball coach and associate athletic director.

Charney handles all of the NCAA clearinghouse and compliance issues for Hillsdale College, in addition to her coaching duties. She is also the school’s senior woman administrator.

She is coming off the fi nest season of her 20-plus year coaching career, guid-ing the Chargers to the 2008-09 GLIAC championship. She also coached Katie Cezat to highest honors in all of Division II in 2008-09. Cezat was named the national player of the year by every organization and website that covered Division II women’s basketball last year.

Charney is Hillsdale College’s all-time leader in women’s basket-ball coaching wins with 137, and three GLIAC South Division titles in her seven-year tenure. She also coached Hillsdale’s only other All-American player, Stephanie Heid, in 2002-03.

She also served as the head coach at Grand Valley State, and is still the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach at Saginaw Valley State. Charney and her husband, Dr. Mark Kosciuszko, re-side in Hillsdale.

Lynne Neukom is offi cially the head athletic trainer at Hillsdale College starting with the 2009-10 school year. She served in that role on an interim basis in 2008-09.

A lifelong resident of Hillsdale County, Neukom graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1987, and enrolled in Hillsdale College that fall. She graduated in 1991 with a degree in Health and Physical Education. She worked as a graduate assistant for longtime head athletic trainer Paul Beachler, and went on to earn a master’s degree in health education – with an emphasis in athletic training – from Western Michigan University in 1993.

Her husband, Jake is a physical therapist and a certifi ed athletic trainer working for the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He regularly assists with the care of the athletes. Their children are Hannah (8), Jacob (6), and Keturah (4). They reside in Hillsdale.

FACILITIES

Re-named aft er the legendary head coach, Frank “Muddy” Waters Stadium is situated on the east end of campus, and seats approximately 8,500 fans. Hillsdale College football teams have been playing on this same spot of earth for more than 60 years. Th e stadium has recently undergone several signifi cant upgrades. New ProGrass artifi cal surface was installed before the 2005 season, and banners and press box lettering were added before the 2006 season. One of the longest-running projects in the program’s history came to fruition in January 2007, when the refurbished locker room was in place and ready for use. Th e area is now known as the Frank “Muddy” Waters/Joseph M. Vijuk Locker Room, named in honor of the former coach and former All-American player, whose generous donation helped fi nish off the gorgeous locker room.

The Great Lakes Intercolle-giate Athletic Conference(GLIAC), founded in 1972,has been a leader in theadvancement and promo-tion of intercollegiate ath-letics for men and womenfor 38 years. The charter members of

the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley StateUniversity, Lake Superior State University, Northwood Uni-versity (then Institute), and Saginaw Valley State University.

Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with theaddition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College,Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State Universitywere accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conferencelost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew.Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when itbecame a member in 1980.

After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conferenceand was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoinedthe conference in 1992.

After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football asa sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring foot-ball joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Confer-ence in forming the football-only Midwest IntercollegiateFootball Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990.

After nine years as one of the premier conferences inDivision II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC onJuly 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolisbecame an associate member as a football-only school.

The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year.Prior to that time, all GLIAC member institutions were locatedin the state of Michigan. On Dec. 14, 1994, membership wasoffered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ash-land, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools begantheir membership July 1, 1995.

On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The Univer-sity of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced OaklandUniversity, which withdrew from the conference after the1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status.

Westminster College, located in New Wilmington,Pennsylvania, became the 14th member of the GLIAC whenit accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30,2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed itsaffiliation to NCAA Division III.

The GLIAC membership changed again when TiffinUniversity of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20,

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference2007, and competes in 18 of the league’s championships. Theaddition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full-time members asGannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania StateAthletic Conference after the 2007-08 season.

The GLIAC will enter a new era during the 2009-10academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presidedover the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. Thelongest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC,Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 fullmembers and two associate members. Also under his leader-ship, the conference has grown to offering championships in 20sports (10 men’s and 10 women’s) while rising to prominenceon the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes haveachieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play.

Brown oversaw the conference’s latest expansion that willoccur on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville,Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, willenter the GLIAC.

The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the ExecutiveCouncil, which is comprised of three representatives from eachmember institution – its director of athletics, faculty athleticsrepresentative and senior woman administrator.

The presidency of the GLIAC is rotated alphabetically byschool, with Kris Dunbar, Director of Athletics at Lake Supe-rior State, serving as GLIAC President in 2009-10. Dr. FrederickFinks, President of Ashland University, will serve as thechairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year.

The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired DellRobinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnicminority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historicallyblack college or university conference when he began his dutieson July 1, 2009.

Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissionerfor Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner forMedia Relations; Denise Gross, Assistant to the Commissioner;Amy Howard, GLIAC Intern; Phil Barnes, Supervisor ofFootball Officials; John Kirk, Supervisor of Basketball Offi-cials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; andRich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.

Week 1Sept. 14, 1985: Hillsdale 21, Wisconsin-Whitewater 7Th e Charger defense limited Wisconsin-Whitewater to 17 yards rushing and 10 fi rst downs in a solid season-opening win. Quarterback Mike Gatt goes 17-for-36 for 166 yards and a touchdown. Defensive back Jeff Hubert returned an interception for a touchdown to open the scoring on the season.Week 2Sept. 21, 1985: Hillsdale 23, Ashland 7Dave Mifsud and Brian Walker each catch touchdown passes from Gatt as once again, Hillsdale shuts down an opponent. Th e Eagles managed just 161 total yards in the game.Week 3Sept. 28, 1985: Saginaw Valley 28, Hillsdale 17Th e only blemish on the season occurred in this game, when the Cardinals overcame six turnovers to defeat the Chargers. Th ese two teams were picked to fi nish fi rst and second in the GLIAC, and had a battle to live up to those predictions. SVSC held a 14-10 halft ime lead, but scored back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away.Week 4Oct. 5, 1985: Hillsdale 25, Wayne State 0Th e dominating Charger defense returned to form, shutting out the Tarters. For the third time this season, the defense held an opponent to less than 175 total yards, as WSU gained just 122 against Hillsdale. Dennis Susa led the defensive eff ort with 11 tackles, while Mifsud caught a 10-yard touchdown pass.Week 5Oct. 12, 1985: Hillsdale 24, Ferris State 15In the annual homecoming game, Gatt passed for a school-record 349 yards to lead the Chargers past the Bulldogs. Gatt went 21-for-30 through the air. His passing sparked Hillsdale to an early 21-0 lead in the game.Week 6Oct. 19, 1985: Hillsdale 21, Grand Valley 14In one of the most competitive games of the regular season, the Chargers won in Allendale for the fi rst time in fi ve years. Hillsdale used special teams and the passing game to bolt to a 21-0 halft ime lead. Steve Ferguson blocked a punt for a touchdown, while Mifsud and Jeff Lantis each caught touchdown passes from Gatt. Mifsud’s scoring reception was good for 58 yards.Week 7Oct. 26, 1985: Hillsdale 42, Kentucky State 0Aft er the previous week’s slugfest, the Chargers had it a little easier in this non-league game. Now ranked No. 8 in the nation, Hillsdale was led by linebacker Rodney Patterson’s 18 total tackles, including 11 solo stops.

1985: The national

championship season

The history of Charger football hit a high point in 1985, when head coach Dick Lowry and a talented senior class led the team to the NAIA national championship game. In that contest, the Chargers had to settle for a 10-10 tie vs. Central Arkansas. Quarterback Mike Gatt (pictured at right) connected with Scott Sugg on a 58-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter to force the tie. Hillsdale and Central Arkansas ended up sharing the national championship that season, but ask anyone who saw that Charger team play, and there’s no question who “the” champions of the day were. Listed below is a game-by-game summary of that championship season.

Week 8Nov. 2, 1985: Hillsdale 52, Michigan Tech 6In its second-straight blowout, the Chargers dominated the Huskies, sprinting out to a 35-0 halft ime lead while holding the team to -12 total yards rushing. Hillsdale also got some help in the league on this day, climbing into fi rst place aft er Ferris State beat Saginaw Valley.Week 9Nov. 9, 1985: Hillsdale 30, Northwood 0Th e Chargers clinch the GLIAC championship game on a fi eld covered with three inches of snow. Mifsud and Lantis once again catch touchdown passes, and kicker Mark Baker boots three fi eld goals under diffi cult conditions. Northwood was held to 101 total yards in the game.Week 10Nov. 16, 1985: Hillsdale 16, Central State (Ohio) 6Not satisfi ed with the conference championship, the Chargers clinch a spot in the NAIA playoff s in a mudbowl-type of game vs. Central State. Aft er scoring a touchdown early, Central State’s explosive off ense was shut down by the Charger defense. Gatt passed and ran for a touchdown in the win.NAIA Quarterfi nalsDec. 7, 1985: Hillsdale 47, Salem College (W.Va.) 3A three-week layoff had no ill eff ects on the Chargers, as they destroyed their fi rst-round playoff opponent. Gatt threw four touchdown passes on four successive possessions as Hillsdale jumped out to a 28-3 halft ime lead. Th e Chargers outgained Salem 465-78 in total yards in the game.NAIA Semifi nalsDec. 14, 1985: Hillsdale 24, Mesa (Col.) 21 - OTIn a bitter rematch from the 1982 playoff s, Baker’s overtime fi eld goal completed a stirring comeback by the Chargers. Hillsdale trailed 21-0 at halft ime, but came back thanks to more consistent off ense and two blocked fi eld goals. A goal-line stand in overtime preserved the win for Hillsdale.NAIA National Championship GameDec. 21, 1985: Hillsdale 10, Central Arkansas 10Split national championships are only a semi-regular occurance at the Division I level in college football these days, but back in 1985, there was no overtime to settle a championship game. So Hillsdale and Central Arkansas had to share the title of “national champions” that year aft er a 10-10 tie. Gatt found Scott Sugg for a 58-yard, game-tying touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter to force the tie. Th e Chargers fi nished the season 11-1-1, the second-most wins in a season in school history. A total of seven players earned All-American honors from the ‘85 Chargers: Steve Cook, Steve Ferguson, Jeff Gatt, Mike Gatt, Jeff Lantis, Paul Mackey and Kurt Norman.

An independent, four-year college in south-central Michigan, Hillsdale College offers the rigorous and

lively academic experience one expects of a tier-one liberal arts college, and it stands out for its commitment to the enduring principles of the Western tradition. Its core curriculum embodies this commitment through required courses in disciplines such as history, literature, science and political science in order to develop in students the “philosophical habit of mind” essential to sound education. Likewise, majors at Hillsdale are a rigorous and searching extension of these commitments. Ranging from classics or music to chemistry or business, academic fields of concentration build upon the core curriculum, deepening and specifying students’ appreciation for and understanding of the liberal arts. Hillsdale College is dedicated to intellectual inquiry and to learning, and it recognizes essential human dignity. Ordered liberty, personal responsibility, limited government, free enterprise and man’s moral, intellectual and spiritual nature illuminate this dignity and identify the service of the College to its students, the nation and the Western intellectual and religious tradition. Far-ranging by design and incisive by method, study at Hillsdale College is intellectually demanding. Students work closely with faculty who guide them in their studies, helping students to prepare for a lifetime of accomplishment, leadership and learning. For more information about Hillsdale College or to arrange a visit, call the Admissions Office at (517) 607-2327, or e-mail [email protected].

Hillsdale College, founded in 1844, is an inde-pendent, coeducational, residential,

nonsectarian college for about 1,300 students. Its four-year cur-riculum leads to the degree of bachelor of arts or bachelor of science. It is accredited by the North Central Association of Col-leges and Secondary Schools, whose Commission on Institutions of Higher Education is located at 30 North LaSalle Street, Suite 2400, Chicago, IL 60602. Hillsdale is included on the approved lists of leading universities for transfer and graduate studies and holds membership in the Association of American Colleges and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Located just off M-99 in the southern Michigan city of Hillsdale, it lies between Detroit and Chicago and is easily accessible via the interstate highway system. Those approaching from the west on the Indiana Tollway should use Interchange 144 (Angola). Those approaching from the east on the Ohio Turnpike should use Exit 13 (Bryan-Montpelier). Approximately one half of Hillsdale’s students come from other states and countries. Hillsdale has traditionally upheld two concepts: academic excellence and institutional independence. The College does not accept federal or state taxpayer subsidies for its operations. This has set it free to offer a unique kind of education. Hillsdale College proudly adheres to the non-discriminatory policy regarding race, religion, sex and national or ethnic origin that it has maintained since long before governments found it necessary to regulate such matters. Hillsdale College is located in the northern part of the city of Hillsdale, with its various grounds and facilities covering some 200 acres. The main quadrangle of the campus is principally devoted to academic and administrative facilities. It has many beautiful oaks, maples and pines and is located atop the highest hill in the city.
