If nothing else in 2009, theBerkeley Stags will be a fun foot-ball team to watch.

They will score a ton of pointsand then some … but the Stags’drawback may be they could giveup a ton as well.

“We will have a strong offensethis fall,” BHS head coach JerryBrown said.

Berkeley will be looking for ameasure of payback this season.

Coming off a 9-5 record in 2008,2-2 in Region 7AAAA, BHS ishungry for 2009 and looks to exacttheir pound of flesh of revenge bydethroning Region 7AAAA cham-pions Goose Creek this fall.

“We should be very experiencedon offense this year,” Brown said.

This year Brown has all his com-ponents back. Senior fullbackDante Richardson shows no lin-gering effects from the broken footsuffered last October. Richardson

adds power to the Stags runninggame to compliment the cut andslash attack of Bruce Ellington andPernell Irving. The trio ofRichardson, Ellington and Irvingaccounted for 3,362 total all-pur-pose yards in 2008.

“We were in a transition year lastyear with few seniors and an inex-perienced offense. We worked on aone-back system with AndreEllington and had to transition to amulti-back offense,” the coachsaid. “With Ellington, Irving and

Richardson we have severaloptions on offense to run.”

Ellington rushed for 786 yards on72 carries, a whopping 10.9-yardaverage with four touchdowns, and also amassed 1,754 all-pur-pose yards with 10 TDs, including

a 98-yard kickoff return.Throw 6’3”, 235-pound receiver

R.J. Robinson into the backfieldmix, plus sophomore RakheemWhite, and the Stags will line upfive running backs capable ofexploding for the big play.

Where the Stags will need to stepit up is on defense with key spotson the line and in the secondaryvacated by graduating seniorsKory Brown, Bobby Gadsden andMike Willis.

“We have some players ready tostep into those spots,” Brown said.“Jaquel Yaden will move to thelinebacker position and EvanMcElvey is looking good at freesafety.”

Robinson pulls double duty lin-ing up in the strong safety position.

Senior Patrick Jackson will againhandle kicking duties.

Berkeley hits the road to open theregular season on August 28against Dutch Fork.

TRIOTS BY ROGER LEE

Three may be the magic number for thePatriots this season.

Three as in: three starting defensivelinemen returning, three starting lineback-ers returning and three starting defensivebacks returning. The number doesn’t havethe same significance for the FortDorchester offense, but that unit doesreturn four starting lineman and its lead-ing rusher.

“We lost a lot of our skills players onoffense so replacing them is our big chal-lenge,” Patriot coach Steve LaPrad said.“We have a decent nucleus back on thatside of the ball, but right now we are anaverage football team. We just have towait and see how the new guys do.”

The Patriots had some of the most tal-ented athletes in the Lowcountry last sea-son, but had to settle for a 7-5 season aftermany of their top players were injuredand missed crucial games. One thing thePatriot offense did well last year was runthe football and that shouldn’t change thisseason.

Returning to the offensive line are cen-ter Thomas Wood, Darius Rivers, PhillipDavis and Bradley Jefferson. GregKoehler should also be a contributor inthe trenches after spending limited timethere last season.

Among their top priorities will be open-ing holes for returning tailback MichaelSellers, who led the team in rushing lastseason with 871 yards and 12 touch-downs. Joining Sellers in the backfieldthis season will be Ja’san Bradley, whoaveraged 7.6 yards per carry last season ina back up role.

Two sophomores are vying for the start-ing quarterback role vacated by GalenBennett, who spent much of his senioryear on the sidelines with injuries. EthanLong took his fair share of snaps in thepreseason, but Devron Glenn will mostlikely be the starter.

When Bennett was injured, Glenn camein as a freshman and completed 18-of-41passes. LaPrad is hoping the experiencehe gained will help him to a fast start thisyear.

“It wasn’t good when it was happening, but I think that will be a plus for this year’steam,” LaPrad said. “He probably won’thave those big old eyeballs that a lot ofinexperienced quarterbacks get when theygo in a game. Devron is a lot like Galen inthat he is elusive. He can also really throughthe ball.”

The Patriot receivers are young and themost unproven group on the whole team. Not a single receiver who caught more thantwo passes last season returns, but LaPradhas confidence in the group.

Senior Aquino Spann, a transfer studentfrom California, may quickly become the goto receiver while the younger players devel-op.

The Patriot defense only lost two playersfrom a unit that only allowed an average of17 points per game. One of those starterswas the team’s leading tackler, linebackerAdrian Stewart, but the team returns all fourof the other players who finished in the Top5 for tackles made.

Bradley Jefferson, Antonio Guy andMontae Adams return up front. Last seasonGuy and Adams combined to make 176

tackles, including 13 for a loss and foursacks.

While Stewart’s presence will be missed, the Patriots have three solid linebackers inGeno Porter, Tracy Jones and KeshonFlores. Porter was the team’s second lead-ing tackler in 2008 with 110 tackles includ-ing 7.5 for a loss and four sacks.

Evan Thompson and Odell Funicelli willalso likely see time at the linebacker posi-tion.

The secondary will be anchored by return-ers Laurez Matthews, Tyler Walker andJustin Gaillard. Miguel Quinn will be theteam’s free safety. He is a state qualifier inthe 100-meter and 200-meter sprint eventsand the brother of University of NorthCarolina linebacker Robert Quinn.

On special teams, Josh Hall returns aftersplitting the kick off and place kickingduties with Diego Lazaazo last season andsplitting punting duties with Will Heath.Hall averaged 38.5 yards per punt. He was4-for-4 on field goals and 36-of-39 on PATs.

Matthews saw limited action as a puntreturner last year and Malik Wheeler, now asenior, was used some as a kick off returner.

The team has several athletes who havedrawn interests from college programs.Sellers, Porter, Adams and Guy have proba-bly drawn the most.

There’s no doubt expectations are as lofty as they’ve been in quitesome time over on Redbank Road, home of the Goose Creek Gators.

The overall talent pool was already as full as it has been underChuck Reedy, and some transfers crammed in there during the off-season, bringing football excitement at Goose Creek to a fever pitchas the 2009 season dawns.

But it isn’t all just going to come together for the Gators withoutaccountability from top to bottom, Reedy said. The team motto is“the time is now.”

“We have to coach harder than we have ever coached,” he said.“We have to be more demanding because the players are so talent-ed. We have to demand more of them.

“It’s very easy as a coach when you have a guy so talented that youlet the little things slide because his athletic ability may overcome astep with the wrong foot or something like carrying the ball in thewrong arm, or whatever the case may be. We have to make sure theyreach their potential.”

Last season, the Gators captured the Region 7-AAAA title andadvanced to the second round of the playoffs, finishing 9-4.

The defensive unit returns eight starters. After two rough outingsto start the season, the Gators were as nasty a group on that side ofthe ball as any in the state. They have a swagger about them this sea-son.

“You can tell they’re confident, not cocky,” defensive coordinatorChris Candor said. “They feel like we should win football games. That’s what you want.”

Included in the senior-laden group returning on defense are thetwo leading tacklers, senior inside linebackers Malcolm Howard

The Stratford Knights are outto prove last season was anaberration and not the begin-ning of a trend.

They finished 3-9, their worstrecord since 1995 when theyalso won just three games, andsimply just didn’t have it likeformer Stratford teams.

“Sometimes getting humbledain’t bad for you,” Stratfordcoach Ray Stackley said.“We’ve got a great traditionbut you don’t win just becauseof that. You win because theplayers uphold the tradition.

“Our players got extremelyhumbled and embarrassed bylast year.”

The last time Stratford took atumble like this, the Knightsdid bounce right back up. After1995, they went 9-3, 10-2, 11-2 and 15-0 in the years that fol-lowed.

Stackley said he’s seen moredesire and fire in his kids thissummer.

“We’ve had some kids callsome voluntary workoutsamongst themselves and that’s

impressed us a lot,” Stackleysaid. “That’s evidence we’vegot some kids that are hungry.”

On offense, the Knights havea quarterback competitiongoing on that figures to spillover into the regular season. It’s made senior Chris Hannaand junior Clint Queen better,Stackley said.

“We’ve got two good quarter-backs,” he added. “We don’tlike to play two, but it’s not outof the question … somebody’sgot to start a ball game but ifthey both progress and playlike they’re playing now, they’ll both play a lot.”

Hanna, a lefty, threw 72 pass-es for 342 yards last season.

During the preseason, bothdid a nice job moving theKnights into the red zone butthat didn’t always translate intopoints, which was a concernfor Stackley.

“We’ve moved the ball realnice in between the 20s but youdon’t score any points doing

that,” he said.At running back, sophomore Devin

Washington and senior Ryan Eichelbergerenter the season as the top backs.Washington is in the mold of former greatStratford running backs and figures tomake an impact for some time.

Up front, offensive linemen Trey Ardisand Russell Spaulding, a pair of seniors, arereturning starters. Other players with expe-rience coming back this season are TylerFord, Luke Bone, Cody Cuppy and JoeySwisher. Junior Adam Kirtley is the tightend.

Senior Francis Lloyd and junior PrestonGavins are back as receivers. Lloyd made45 catches for 589 yards and four touch-downs in 2008, while Gavins hauled in 28passes for 307 yards and two scores. RyanBarnwell, a junior, has moved from runningback to slot receiver.

Defensively, the Knights bring back lead-ing tackler Ian Thompson at linebacker andfree safety Brant Sally. Both are seniors.

Thompson had over 90 tackles whileSally made 71 total stops and four intercep-tions.

The defensive front is made up of juniors

Brandon Cobb, Brett Borders, TylerLimehouse and senior Cory Bright. It’s agroup that has a mix of size and speed.Bright made 45 stops and 11 tackles forloss a year ago.

Joining Thompson at linebacker is seniorNakeem Jenkins. He had 56 tackles in2008.

Seniors Malik Williams and RodneyRoberts, and Barnwell are also in the rota-tion at linebacker. Projected starter JonFranklin broke his ankle in the preseasonand is expected to miss at least half the sea-son.

Senior Marquis West, the strong safety, isback after making 55 tackles and pickingoff four passes. The corners will be seniorLeon Alexander and either senior TyriePoinsette or junior Antonio Nelson.

The biggest objective for the defensiveunit will be to be more consistent. Lastyear, Stratford allowed 348 points. Theygave up 21 or more points nine times, cer-tainly different results than what they wereused to.

“Our coaches worked as hard as they’veever done but we just didn’t get it done,”Stackley said. “We feel like this group ofkids is better … if you play good defense, you’ll beat the teams you’re supposed tobeat.”

With only seven true starters back, the Green Wavehas a lot of holes to fill this season, but things stilllook promising for the team.

“We feel like we have a good group with a lot oftalent,” Summerville coach John McKissick said.“They are working hard so I believe we will be agood team.”

Last year, Summerville finished with a 9-3 record. The Wave went undefeated against Lowcountryopponents en route to claiming the Region 8-AAAAchampionship outright. Summerville then lost afirst-round playoff game to Gaffney.

This year the Wave offense only has one skills-position player back on offense who was a starterlast season. However, that player was the team’sleading rusher in 2008 and some other skills playershave shown promise in passing camps and scrim-mages.

“We have a lot of speed and four good receiverswho have some height,” McKissick said. “We alsohave two quarterbacks who are looking good to bejust sophomores.”

Tailback De’Angelo Henderson returns for his jun-ior season after leading the Wave rushers with 749yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Henderson also

had six receptions for 131 yards. Senior Donta’ Lindwill join him in the backfield as a fullback after see-ing some playing time last season.

Returning up front are center Devin Taylor andguard Corley Bridges, who are both seniors. Otherslikely to start on the offensive line are tackles TylerLotz and Devin Smith, both seniors, and guard NickSchweitzer, a junior. Taylor has drawn interest fromsome Division 1 colleges.

“We are about where we were this time last yearwith the offensive line,” McKissick said. “Theprospects there are good, we just need guys to getafter it a little more.”

Dalton Saunders and Reggie Green are the frontrunners for the starting QB spot, but junior MattMcCombs, who held a backup role for the varsity in2008, is also in the mix. Saunders had a solid seasonas the starter for the JV team last year and experi-enced success during passing camps this summer.McKissick said he also has confidence in Green, who transferred from North Carolina too late to par-ticipate in any passing camps.

The Wave receivers had a good showing in campsas they helped the team earn a first-place finish at theCharleston Southern camp and a second-place finishat the Steve Spurrier camp.

Senior Marlon Pryor is the mostexperienced of the group. He saw alot of action with the varsity lastseason and made 18 catches for 341yards and two TDs. Others whoshowed potential during campsinclude senior DeJon Wilkinsonand juniors Cody Reese and ChrisWilliams. Wilkinson is a statechampion in the triple jump.

On defense, Summerville returnsD-1 prospect Brice Laughlin on theline. Laughlin, who was in on 31tackles including two sacks lastyear, can be used either inside or atan end position. David Creel, a jun-ior transfer student from Woodland,is another big body the Wave willhave in the trenches.

The linebacker corps will be ledby senior Rondrick Tucker, a three-year starter. With 57 tackles and 58assists, he was the team’s thirdleading tackler last season. MichaelScholz should also provide leader-ship for the group. In a non-startingrole last season, he tallied 28 tack-les and as many assists.

Blaine Galloway (34 tackles and18 assists) and Tyrone Williams (38tackles and 16 assists) return asdefensive backs. Williams broke up13 passes in 2008 and made threeinterceptions while Galloway hadthree breakups, two fumble recov-eries and an interception.

All four starters returning to thedefense have drawn the interest ofcollege scouts.

The Wave special teams onlyreturn one player who started in askills position last season. Aftershowing he could routinely bootthe ball into the end zone, Scholzwill again be the team’s kickoffman. The senior and junior BryanJordan are competing for the place-kicking job. Senior Brett Clevlandis looking to secure the puntingposition after serving in a back uprole there last season.

The Wave will find out exactlywhat kind of team it is early in theseason as it faces Conway, GooseCreek and Irmo in the first threeweeks. Conway and Irmo handedSummerville its only regular-sea-son losses last year. The Gators areagain loaded with talent.

Expect a sharper lookingSwamp Fox team this fall.

Last year, the Ashley Ridgefootball team entered its debutseason without even having achance to thoroughly evaluateits athletes, much less manyopportunities to work on strate-gy. As expected, the season wasa struggle for the team of fresh-men and sophomores, whichfinished the year with a 2-9record.

Entering the team’s secondseason, Ashley Ridge coachDoc Davis says things don’tlook quite so grim.

“We certainly feel better aboutthe team,” he said. “This timelast year it was total chaos foreveryone – the players, coachesand parents. No one knew whatto expect. Our expectations forthis year are just to play better. We have improved so I think wewill be more competitive, but I

don’t know if that is going totranslate into more wins or not.”

Davis says he now has a muchbetter idea of what his athletesare capable of. He plans to openthe playbook up some, particu-larly in the passing game, butcautions that the program is stilla work in progress and probablywill be for several more sea-sons.

One thing the Foxes havegoing for them is they only lostone starter on each side of theball and from its special teams’skills group. Amad Dawson, theteam’s best lineman on bothsides of the ball, and place kick-er Sergio Rosas, did not return. However, the rest of the startersdid.

“We return our leading passer, leading receiver and leadingrusher and that’s always a goodthing,” Davis said.

CANE BAY COBRASFOOTBALL 2009 25August 2009

BY ROB GANTT

Cane Bay’s progress from its first year as a program to this fallis easy to track just by visiting the school’s weight room.

“We timed them last year when they were true eighth and ninth-graders, and we had three kids that could break a five flat,” CaneBay coach Jeff Cruce said. “On our board in there now, we’ve gotover 20 kids that can run a 4.9 or better. There is a huge differencespeed-wise.

“And we’ve got some kids benching 315 and a kid that’s squat-ting 505.”

The Cobras, playing with only freshmen and sophomores, fin-ished 2-8 a year ago and lost by some big numbers. They havethe look of a more mature football team physically and Cruceexpects his squad to hold its own this fall.

“I think we’re going to shock some people when they see us thistime around,” Cruce said. “You’ll never see another game at CaneBay where a team hangs 60-plus or more points on us. That willnever happen again, ever. It just won’t happen.”

The Cobras are more equipped on the coaching staff too. Theyhave five new football coaches in the program. No more doubleduty for the varsity coaches unless they just want to coach in bothprograms.

“We’ve got a full staff now,” Cruce said. “We’ve got six on theJV and six on the varsity. Last year we had to coach both and itwas too much.”

KS BY ROB GANTT

The Hanahan Hawks haveto put together more four-quarter efforts this season.

They finished 6-5 a yearago and led at halftime infour of those losses. In theother, they were tied witheventual state championDillon at the break in theopening round of the ClassAA playoffs.

“We were a few plays awayfrom our season being a lotbetter,” Hawks coach CharliePatterson said.

The Hawks open the 2009season expecting to light upscoreboards but aren’t as set-tled on the other side of theball. The offense was clearlyahead of the defense in thespring and the preseason.

“We’ve got a lot ofimprovements to make butwe feel like we’ve got the

group that can compete withanybody,” Patterson said.

Both quarterbacks up forthe starting job are capableof moving the chains,Patterson said.

Senior Bryce Hines is backafter throwing for nearly1,800 yards and 18 touch-downs and junior DerekCoblentz is right there as aco-No. 1 signal caller.

Running backs MontiRichardson and JamalLockwood are returners, having combined for 999yards in 2008. Richardsonscored six touchdowns, fourrushing and two receiving.Senior Jelani Ellington alsogot a lot of work in the back-field during the preseasonalong with senior Chris A.Brown.

The receiver corps is plentydeep with playmakers.Junior Irim Aiken caught 27

balls for 456 yards and seventouchdowns and Paul Smithadded 19 grabs for 289 yardsand three scores. JuniorJaron Denmark had 124yards receiving and a scorelast season. SophomoreChris Brown, junior ShawnFludd, sophomore PatrickAlston and junior NickSmith will all get looks in thepassing game too.

Up front, the Hawks arejust as experienced. Fiveplayers in the rotation havestarting experience. The lefttackle is senior Sidney Clark, senior left guard LeonardFinley, senior center NickPye, junior right guard KyleClark and junior right tackleTrey Farley. Juniors RyanBlankenship and TroyToppin will play in the line, too.

Defensively, the Hawks aresolid at the end positions

with Jelani Ellington andJames King. SophomoreRyan Hunt and a few othersare rotating in at the othertwo positions.

Junior linebacker SabastianShort and Lockwood areback at the second level aftermaking over 80 total tackleseach last season. Lockwoodhas moved to the outside andJohn Piggott is the other out-side linebacker. SeniorAnthony Pelloni starts theseason at the other insidespot by Short.

Aiken is the anchor of thesecondary at free safety andFludd is locked in at one cor-ner spot. Chris A. Brown isthe first-teamer at the othercorner spot. The Hawks haveplenty of depth there too.

The Hawks figure to be atop 10 team in the Class AApolls at some point this sea-son but they start out the year

just outside by some presea-son polls. Patterson is OKwith his team’s startingpoint.

“I think a lot of times, theylook at things such as collegeprospects and seniors,” hesaid. “We may not have a lotof big name guys that bigcolleges are looking at butgive me 30 guys that want toplay together and you canhave the superstars.

“I think one of our bigthings will be team chem-istry. If we can get our 35 or40 guys to play as a team,we’re going to be all right.”

This fall, the Hawks will belooking for their first regiontitle since 2006 and first 10-win season since going 12-2in 2004. They compete inRegion 7-AA withWaccamaw, Timberland,Manning, Kingstree andAndrews.

They were so close … andyet so far.

After looking unstoppablefor most of the 2008 season, the Timberland Wolves lost inheartbreaking fashion to endlast year’s campaign.

The Wolves (14-1 in 2008),who lost out to eventual statechampion Dillon in doubleovertime in the Lower Statefinals, are in the midst of acomplete overhaul of theiroffense.

Gone are the likes of QuintonWashington, AldrickFordham, Storm Moore,Rockarius King, and CalebCaddell, all bound forDivision I college football

At basically every position too there’s alot more competition for starting spots. The Cobras are developing a more solidtwo-deep depth chart.

On offense, Stratford transfer ZackWimmer, a sophomore, is pushing 2008starter Brandon Hall at quarterback andcould emerge as the first-teamer.

On the line, junior left guard CodyNuchia and sophomore center Josh Haleare the anchors but the Cobras are work-ing eight or nine kids there, includingsophomore Devon Thornton, sophomoreBlake Paez and sophomore Kyle Meree.

“We’re just trying to find five that fittogether,” Cruce said.

In the backfield, juniors Fritz Simmonsand James Bishop combined for nearly1,200 yards and seven touchdowns on theground last season. Anthony Enos is alsoexpected to play in the backfield.

Junior tight end Andrew Ackerman andjunior receiver Jared Holloway are the toptwo receivers returning. Ackermancaught 12 passes for 105 yards and atouchdown, while Holloway hauled in

eight passes for 169 yards, including along touchdown catch in the school’s winagainst Ashley Ridge last season.

Defensively, the Cobras’ strength isgoing to be its line.

Juniors Cody Rose, Anthony Phyall,Devonte Diggs and Jonathan Graham andfreshman Tyrell Davis will be able tocause some problems for opposing offens-es.

At linebacker, junior Cullen Seabrookreturns to anchor the second level. Hemade over 100 tackles a year ago.Sophomore Keenen Reid and juniorDarius Warren are the other starters.Sophomore Randal Drew, junior KellinKunkel and junior Andrew Crawford pro-vide quality depth at linebacker.

Members of the secondary include jun-ior Kyle Spearman, junior Bruce Rumph, junior Henry Taylor, junior TariqSimmons and sophomore Chris David.

Tight ends Lorenzo Baker and Tre Deloachalso return.

Otis Neals will again line up as tailback afterleading the Swamp Foxes in rushing yards lastseason. Joining him in the backfield will bereturning fullback Kevin Lester and freshmanRomelo Doctor, who is coming off an impres-sive season with the Ashley Ridge JV.

“We’re excited about having a strong tandemof tailbacks,” Davis said. “Otis plays both waysso having Romelo to kind of spell him will help.Maybe we won’t work Otis to death this year.”

Paul Gonzales, Brandon Woodward, AlanKendall and center Chris Massey return to theoffensive line. Helping to fill the void left byDawson’s departure will be Pinewood transferM.J. Pinson.

Most of the players filling big roles on offense, including all of the linemen, will also play ondefense. Two new members of the Swamp Foxprogram, junior Shelby Smith and sophomoreJarred Joseph, will also spend time in the defen-

sive trenches.“On defense, I think our strength is probably

our linebackers,” Davis said. “Lorenzo Baker, our leading tackler last year, will lead a group ofguys returning who have a knack for being atthe right place at the right time.”

Joining the sophomore in the linebackingcorps will be returners Pete Cunningham andLester and two newcomers to the varsity, ChrisLupyak and Jeff Judy. Lupyak and Judy willalso be called on to play defensive backs insome schemes.

Neals and Dominique Francis will both lineup at safety. Nick Webb returns to one corner-back position and Doctor is the favorite to earnthe other corner spot.

Two sophomores are vying for the place kick-er position. Brandon Hughes played for theSwamp Fox JV last season and DaltonRobinson is new to the program.

McKinney will again be the Swamp Foxpunter and Cox will again be the team’s puntreturner. However, Davis says he doesn’t expectCox to make many returns.

“We plan to go after every punt,” Davis said.“Hopefully we’ll block a few and make them(shank) a lot of the others. The rest, Cameroncan just fair catch unless there is a great returnopportunity.”

Neals and Doctor will return kick offs.

The Cross Trojans reached intotheir past in hopes of developing amore promising future with thehiring of alumnus Shawn Wrightto guide the Trojan football pro-gram.

As the season is poised to start,Wright is seeing a differencealready.

“The kids were pretty enthused,”Wright said. “Being around thenew coaches has energized them alittle and got them excited aboutthe fall.”

The Trojans under departingcoach James Waring finished 4-7overall and 4-2 in Region 6-A in2008 and were ousted in the firstround of the playoffs byTimmonsville.

Wright’s initial goals for hisTrojans can’t be measured bywins and losses.

“I want to do well for this foot-ball program and bring the com-munity back out here,” he said.

When he looks at his team, thenew coach sees promise.

“We have some talent here,” hesaid. “These kids came ready toplay football.”

Wright’s first move was to takeDeVante Jenkins out from undercenter and put the 6’5” senior inthe X-receiver position and gethim downfield.

“With DeVante’s speed andheight we need to get him down-field and get the ball in his hands,”Wright said.

The responsibility of doing justthat will fall on the young shoul-

ders of sophomore quarterbackJalen Frazier.

“This kid has got an arm,”Wright said. “He’s just the sopho-more. In a couple years he will bethe real deal. With Jalen back thereI can move DeVante out to thereceiver slot.”

Treston Haskill and DondrickPringle will also be targets forFrazier’s rocket arm.

In the backfield, Antonio Smith,Stephon Simmon, MichaelSmalls, and Louis Simmons willhandle most of carries in theTrojans multiple Wing-T offense.

On defense, the player to keepan eye on will be defensive endCorde Dailey.

“He’s getting some looks fromsome people this year,” Wrightsaid. “I expect big things fromhim.”

Also anchoring the defense islinebacker Floyd Mack, a juniorwho has started every Trojan foot-ball game since his freshman year, and Trevor Doctor, who missed allof 2008 with a torn ACL.

“Floyd has started every gamehe’s played here,” Wright said,“and with Trevor back, he’ll be abig addition to our team this year.”

Jenkins and Frazier will line upin the defensive backfield whenthe opposition has the.

Attitude will be everything forthis squad who will dress-out just30 players, along with condition-ing.

The Trojans open up on Aug. 28,on the road against AAAA’sJames Island.

With many of its top players returning,Woodland is looking to build on the success ithad last season.

The Wolverines went 4-1 in their region lastseason to tie for first place. It was the best fin-ish to date in the school’s history. After a lossin the playoffs, Woodland finished up 8-4overall.

The team lost some key players to gradua-tion, most notably its leading receiver andleading tackler. However, the team returnsseven true starters on each side of the ball plusits punter.

“We are more experienced entering this sea-son than we have been in the past,” Woodlandcoach Reed Charpia said. “That is a result ofmore athletes coming out for the team and ourcoaches playing more of them. However, I’mnot saying we have more depth going into thisyear.”

The Wolverines return four starters to theoffensive line. Bo Wagers is the center;Chavez James and Labradford Rasberry are theguards; and Ricky Pringle returns at left tack-le.

Charpia says a number of other linemen arelikely to see time this year.

“We aren’t as big on either side of the ball aswe were last year, but we are quicker,”Charpia said.

The line will be charged with opening holesfor two college prospects in the offensivebackfield. If it succeeds in that mission, theWolverines will be hard to stop.

Junior Robert Smith is back for his third sea-son as the Wolverine quarterback. The 2008-09 All-County Line first-string QB completed156 passes for 2,402 yards and 25 TDs lastseason while also rushing for 1,038 yards and11 TDs.

Also returning to the backfield is tailbackNagui Wright, who followed a great season in2008 by placing sixth in the state 100-meterdash finals in the spring. The senior has goodhands and at times may line up as a receiver.Kijuan Edwards is also expected to see someaction in the backfield.

After leading the Wolverines in receptionslast year, Marquise Carson graduated. However, Woodland does return the receiverwho lined up opposite of Carson, seniorHarold Seabrook.

Martin Connelly had significant playing timeas a receiver last season and will likely seeaction both as a receiver and backup QB thisyear. He will also once again be the team’spunter.

Lashaun Stapleton, Otez Ross and AndraeGreen are other players expected to get somereps either as a receiver or running back, if notas both.

The Woodland defense lacks experience upfront, but makes up for it at the other posi-tions.

Returning to the linebacking corps areEdwards, Carlton Summers and CameronSmalls. Cornerbacks Devine Kelly and Wrightreturn and Connelly will again line up at safe-ty. Defensive end Damian Alston is the solestarter back on the defensive line.

As the season progresses, a number of line-men may be called upon. Terrill Haynes,Alfred Spell, Ehron Mitchum, Chris Spell,Kadeem Elmore, Marcus Daniel, DejaunSmith, Michael Elmore, Dylan Murray,Brandon Higgins, Daniel Mitchell, RyanRhodus and Jeremey Smith are among theplayers hoping to spend some time in thetrenches either on offense or defense.

FOOTBALL 2009 37August 2009 ST. JOHN’S CAVALIERSBY DAN BROWN

St. John’s Cavaliers football coach Bill McCall has agood feeling about the state of the school’s football pro-gram.

According to the coach, it’s all about believing.“The biggest issue is getting the guys to believe they can

play 11-man football,” McCall said.A year ago, his Cavaliers stepped up to the challenge of

11-man football, jumping out to a 3-1 mark to start the sea-son and finishing with a more than respectable 6-5 record.

This year it’s more of the same, trying to find the rightplayer to fill the slots left vacant from graduation and build-ing on the success of last year’s inaugural 11-man cam-paign.

“There are things we learned from last year’s experiencewe’ll be able to apply to this year’s team,” McCall said.

The first improvement over 2008 is simply in the numberof bodies lining up on either side of the ball as the Cavalierswill field a 22-man varsity squad and a 15-man JV teamthis year.

“The numbers and interest in the football program areimproving school wide,” said athletic director Bob Winters.

The biggest question facing McCall and his Cavaliers iswhere to put his players and what they’ll do once he putsthem there.

New for St. John’s this fall will be a multiple quarterback

set up with senior C.J. Downey and sophomore TylerDupree sharing snaps under center.

“When one is not at quarterback he’ll be lining up in arunning back’s slot,” McCall said. “Plus this year we havea first where our quarterbacks will both be lining up as out-side linebackers on defense.”

Whitt McLeod, Houston Cumbee and William Johnsonwill provide good-sized targets for Dupree and Downey, with Brock LeCroy and Chase Wright.

Three returning starters will comprise the Cavalier offen-sive line in Brandon Sublett, Eric Parker and AbramBaucom. On defense the three will simply switch sides ofthe trenches.

“With a school our size everybody plays both ways,”McCall said.

Jason Roberts locks down the centerfield free safety posi-tion in a multiple formation defensive scheme withMcLeod and Ryan Gatlin flanking at the cornerback posi-tions. Crumbee, Dupree and Downey anchor the linebackercorps with sophomores Chris Rudd and Aaron Porter fillingout the defensive line.

St. John’s opens the 2009 season with its first two gameson the road before opening up at home on Sept. 4, againstCathedral Academy.

“Personally I think we do better playing on the road,”McCall said. “The players aren’t as distracted and they canfocus on the game.”

For St. John’s, it’s all about believing

SBY ROB GANTT

Northwood Academy football coachJerry Stoots said his team can expect to geteverybody’s best shot this fall but he’s notsure the defending champion Chargers arethe favorites in their title defense.

“I don’t know that we’re going in as anykind of favorite for anything,” Stoots said.“There are a couple of teams in our regionthat will probably go in rated higher thanus, maybe as many as three teams.”

Those who know Stoots know that’swhat he would say even if he thought theChargers were the favorites. WithNorthwood, it’s always a wait-and-see sit-uation, though history suggests they’ll bearound at the end.

The Chargers have played for two titlesthe last two seasons and were one stepaway from the championship game in theirfirst season. This is their fourth year play-ing football and they’re loaded with sen-iors.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Stootssaid. “We’re getting kind of anxious.”

Northwood brings back one of the mostdynamic running backs in the Lowcountryin Uriah Singleton.

The senior rushed for 2,239 yards and 34touchdowns last fall and caught 21 passesfor 216 yards and two scores.

“He’s a huge part of our offense obvious-ly,” Stoots said. “One of the things last yearwas that we had another good back, a com-plimentary back that did a lot of blockingand allowed Uriah some rest. We’re stilllooking for that other guy this year.”

The Chargers do have a lot of guys thatcan catch it but the passing game has beenoff in the preseason, Stoots said. Some ofthe time junior Ty Powell is missing his tar-gets. Other times, the line has been a prob-lem.

Simply, the Chargers just need time to geteverything ironed out in the passing game.

“We’re going to have to have some suc-cess in the passing game because we’re not

going to be able to run Uriah 45 times agame,” Stoots said.

Senior Brock Richard is a returningstarter on the line and will be joined upfront by fellow seniors Josh King, KevinThomas, Zach Hollifield and DavidBarnette. Sophomore Joey Bisognani is inthe rotation too.

The group of receivers are seniors NickBurn, Ryan Shipley, Derek Mills, WesleyBouronich and Jamie Hall. Tight end CalanDavis is a senior too.

Burn also made his impact felt on specialteams and defense a year ago. He’s one ofa number of Chargers that will play bothways.

“He ran some kickoffs back and had acouple of key interceptions,” Stoots said.“He picked up a fumble and ran it in for atouchdown in the state championship gametoo.”

He led the Charger defensive unit withfive interceptions.

Singleton has moved from safety to out-side linebacker. He made three intercep-tions last fall.

Richard, who has moved back to line-backer from the defensive line, had foursacks a year ago. Thomas is the otherinside linebacker. Senior Josh Manigo isthe outside linebacker opposite Singleton.

Davis and King are the defensive tackles.Senior Christian Rothhaus and juniorConnor Ex-Lubeskie are playing nose-guard.

Burn, Shipley and Jamal Manigo, also asenior, are entrenched in the secondary.Hall, Mills and senior Noah Burns haveplayed at one corner spot.

On special teams, junior Seth Graham isback at punter and kicker. He averaged 34yards per punt and made 56 of 59 extrapoints in 2008.

“The best I can say is that we’ll be com-petitive,” Stoots said. “If we can avoidinjuries and develop some depth, hopeful-ly we can be involved in the playoffs. Howfar we go from there is anybody’s guess.”

Third year coach Pinky Guerard is looking forward toanother year with the Pinewood Panthers.

The Panthers went 8-4 in 2008 and advanced to theSCISA semi-finals, where they lost to Hammond. Theteam has eight seniors this year and Guerard is againlooking to go deep into the play-offs.

“We have been working hard pre-season and if we canstay injury free and do the little things that it takes on andoff the field, we feel we can be a contender,” Guerardsaid. “There is parity in AAA this year. There are seventeams that all have a shot at going far in the play-offs.There doesn’t appear, at this time, to be a dominant teamso that should make the year a lot of fun on a weeklybasis. Our home game against Hammond on Aug. 28 willgive us an opportunity to gauge where we are.”

Senior quarterback Bruce Haynes returns to the offen-sive helm after completing 95 passes for 1,671 yards and18 touchdowns in 2008. He also rushed for 870 yards and15 TDs.

“Bruce is a great dual-threat QB who we will rely onheavily to lead us,” Guerard said. Also looking to leadthe Panthers will be Senior Moses Richardson. Last sea-son Pinewood Prep was primarily known for their pass-

ing attack and Richardson wasn’t the fea-tured back so he had a limited amount oftouches. However, he managed to make asolid contribution to the team, rushing for646 yards and five touchdowns on just 86touches (7.5 ypc).

Senior Chris Morgan will also take a lotof the workload when Pinewood wants torun the ball.

“Moses is a speed and cutback guy thatwill carry the load for us at running backand Chris Morgan does a little bit ofeverything, including providing goodleadership, Guerard said. “All three(backs) are fine players that any teamwould love to have.”

Up front, the Panthers look very athleticand strong. The offensive line will bemanned by senior Billy Bryans at leftguard, Daniel Zuvia at right tackle andnew comer Jim Brown, who continues toimpress during camp.

Pinewood is still looking for a widereceiver to step up. The coaching staffcontinues to work with some younger ath-letes to see who that will be.

“We are seeing if we can get a consistentreceiver who can run after the catch,”Guerard said.

Defensive coordinator Bo Reeves and hissquad have spent the entire spring andsummer learning some new schemes.

“I like what they are doing and I think wewill stop some folks,” Guerard said. “Ithink by midseason, if we stay healthy, thedefense will be the strength of our team.”

Damian Simmons will be looked to forleadership on the defensive side of theball. Last season, he had 51 tackles andwas a key member of the secondary.Guerard says he has the potential to be areal force in the league.

Junior Ethan Gaskins brings experienceto the middle line backer position. Lastyear, he made 53 tackles and 31 assists.Junior Danny Zuvia brings experience tothe defensive tackle position and juniorBradley Bilsback is looking to make animpact as a corner.

“Bradley has had perfect attendance atsummer workouts and conditioning andhis work ethic is paying dividends on thefield,” Guerard said.

The Panther kicking game is in the handsof sophomore Thomas Ferro, who is astriker on the Pinewood soccer team.

With talented athletes on both sides ofthe ball, overall Guerard is optimistic.

“We hope to have a good year,” he said.“It all comes down to blocking and tack-ling and holding onto the ball.”

and Dontavia Reid. Howard had over 140total tackles and Reid was over 130 stops. The starting outside linebackers are RaeRobinson and T.J. Burrell, a pair of athleticsophomores. Senior Patrick James and juniorDarius Daniels are also in the rotation at line-backer.

Up front, the Gators are both quick and ath-letic, and experienced. Seniors ShawnWilliams and Josh Jenkins are the ends, whiletackles Terrell Rowland and Antonio Jacksonare seniors.

In the secondary, senior cornerback AlbertKirk returns after making six interceptions in2008. Junior Troy Dicks is the other cornerand senior L.C. McCloud is the safety. JuniorJovante Gillis and senior Jawaun Foremanwill also roam the secondary.

“We have to have great leadership from ourseniors,” Reedy said. “If we do that across theboard, we’re going to be OK. If we don’t,

that’s what could really hurt this footballteam.”

It’s been rare under Reedy that the offensehas been the question mark at Goose Creekbut they will be brand new at quarterback andoverall the Gators are still working on cohe-siveness.

Sophomores Zach Lavery and JaquanMarsh are vying for time under center.Lavery throws it as well as anybody has in awhile at Goose Creek but Marsh is a littleahead in the option game.

Sophomore Virgil Smalls and freshmanMike Myers are the fullbacks, while seniorRanoy Hines and junior Jerome Jordan playtailback. Hines and Smalls combined for over1,100 yards and scored 10 touchdowns eachlast season.

Also returning will be speedy receiverKevin Glears, who finished with 40 catchesfor over 500 yards. He also returned a kickoff91 yards for a score against Lancaster andscored a total of seven touchdowns. Otherreceivers will be freshman speedster TramelTerry, junior Jamel Bowman and Kirk.

Tight end James Robinson may also splitout wide at times. Junior Darian Sims is theother tight end when the Gators go two tights.

Two transfers from West Ashley HighSchool, brothers Brandon Shell (6-7, 310)and Deandre Shell (6-1, 300), will make a bigimpact on the offensive front, where theGators would have been very young. The big-ger Shell is a junior and the older a senior, and they’ll play on the left side of the line.

“We’re fortunate (to get the Shells) becausewe were going to be very young on the offen-sive line,” Reedy said. “We’ve got some goodyoung players but most of them were a yearaway.”

Senior center Dennis Large is the lonereturning starter from last season.

Sophomores Matt Steffensen and SethCraven are the guard and tackle on the rightside. Juniors Rais Kelly, Ed Pippin andMontais Anderson are also in the rotation onthe offensive line.

On special teams, senior Daniel Smith isback to handle kicking and punting.

FOOTBALL 200944 August 2009

BY DAN BROWN AND ROB GANTT

As opening kickoff of the 2009high school football season drawsnear, every Lowcountry footballteam looks ahead to September andOctober with an unbridled spirit ofoptimism.

Granted, by the third week ofSeptember the cold and brutal truthof reality will have long since shat-tered fantasies as teams approachMonday morning with 1-3 records, but for now, everybody’s tied forfirst.

In 2008, Goose Creek captured itsfirst outright Region 7-AAAAchampionship in the school’s histo-ry.

Goose Creek will have its handsfull defending its first-ever regioncrown and Berkeley lines up whatcould be its most potent offense inyears.

“It looks like our offense will beexperienced this year,” said headcoach Jerry Brown.

The Stags feature five runningbacks and a two-headed quarter-back.

The two-headed quarterbackcomes in the likes of BruceEllington and Pernell Irving. Add tothat a healthy Dante’ Richardson,Berkeley’s leading rusher last sea-son until he went down againstWando with a broken foot. Throwin sophomore Rakheem White andreceiver R.J. Robinson and theStags have as many options to scoreas fingers.

Goose Creek defends its 2008championship with what got themto the dance, a much-improveddefense.

The defensive unit returns eightstarters. After two rough outings tostart the season, the Gators were asnasty a group on that side of the ballas any in the state. They have aswagger about them this season.

“We have to coach harder than wehave ever coached,” said headcoach Chuck Reedy. “We have to be

more demanding because the play-ers are so talented.”

Included in the senior-laden groupreturning on defense are the twoleading tacklers, senior inside line-backers Malcolm Howard andDontavia Reid. Howard had over140 total tackles and Reid was over130 stops.

Stratford looks to be muchimproved, coming off a disappoint-ing 3-9 season a year ago.

“Some times getting humbledain’t bad for you,” Stratford coachRay Stackley said.

A pair of quarterbacks looks toreplace the departing TylerMcDonald in senior Chris Hannaand junior Clint Queen.

“The competition will make themboth play better,” Shackley said.

Wando and James Island look tofare no better than .500 this fall andcould play the role of spoiler forBerkeley County teams if anyshould fall prey to “schedule watch-ing” as the season enters October.

While there aren’t any clear-cutfavorites in Region 7-AAAA, thereare no easy pushovers either.

Timberland must regroup afteradvancing to the Lower State AAfinals only to lose to eventual statechamp Dillon. Look for the Wolvesto air it out as the Class of 2010looks to establish their own identityfollowing the Class of 2008 whosent six players to D-1 football pro-grams and won the most games inschool history.

“This class is eager to establishtheir own identity,” said coach ArtCraig. “They’re looking to carry onthe tradition here.”

Hanahan should give Timberlanda race for one of the 7-AA playoffberths, though both teams may beconsidered long shots for the regioncrown.

The Hawks finished 6-5 a yearago and led at halftime in four ofthose losses.

The other, they were tied witheventual state champion Dillon at

the break in the opening round ofthe Class AA playoffs.

“We were a few plays away fromour season being a lot better,”Hawks coach Charlie Pattersonsaid. “We’ve got a lot of improve-ments to make but we feel likewe’ve got the group that can com-pete with anybody.”

Former THS assistant coach SteveBlanchard is starting over fromsquare one as the new head coach atAndrews. The Yellow Jackets fin-ished 1-9 in 2008 and have nowhereelse to go but up. It will take athree-year rebuilding process atleast, but look for Blanchard toimprove his team’s chances a littleeach year.

Manning, Waccamaw andKingstree will battle it out for themiddle slots in the region.

Unlike the Wolves of last year, there is no clear-cut favorite to takehome the crown.

Expect some battles between theRegion 8-AAAA teams this fall.

Last season there weren’t manyblowouts during inter-region play. These teams have veteran coacheswho have their programs moving inright direction so while the fron-trunners for the region crown arethe same, the other teams can’t beoverlooked.

“The last few years it has kind ofbeen a three-dog race in our region, but you can’t count anyone out,”Fort Dorchester coach SteveLaPrad said. “I’m sure that ColletonCounty and West Ashley are goingto be competitive this year. Itshould be a lot of fun for the fans, but it’s rough on us coaches.”

Last year Summerville won theregion crown outright with a perfect4-0 mark in region action. Beaufortwas the runner up with only oneloss that came to the Green Wave.Trailing in the region standings

were Fort Dorchester (2-2),Colleton (1-3) and West Ashley (0-4).

This season Colleton County, FortDorchester and West Ashley havethe most starters returning. TheCougars and the Wildcats havemore skills players back whileSummerville and Beaufort arereplacing skills players who werekey during last year’s campaigns.

Talent at the running back positionruns deep in the region so look formost of these teams to go to the runfirst and the pass second. Alsoexpect a lot of the contests to againbe decided in the fourth quarter.

Following, teams are listed inorder of their predicted finish.

Summerville2008: 9-3Coach: John McKissick (58th

year)Returning Starters: 7Summerville has a lot of first-year

starters, but it also has a lot of tal-

ent.Anchoring the offense this year

will be junior tailback De’AngeloHenderson, the Wave’s leadingrusher in 2008. He rushed for 749yards and 11 touchdowns last yearand made six receptions for 131yards. He will be joined by a num-ber of promising rushers this sea-son.

The Wave has two offensive line-men returning to the trenches, sen-iors Devin Taylor and CorleyBridges. Their supporting cast isn’tvery experienced, but looks to besolid.

Sophomore quarterback DaltonSaunders preformed well in sum-mer camps and scrimmages but thatis his only varsity experience enter-ing the season. He has a young, group of receivers to throw to, butMcKissick says he likes the size ofthe group and believes they will dowell. Senior Marlon Pryor is themost seasoned of the bunch.

The Wave defense will be

anchored by backs Blaine Gallowayand Tyrone Williams, who com-bined for 72 tackles and 34 assistsin 2008.

Linebackers Rondrick Tucker andMichael Scholz also return withconsiderable experience. Tucker isa three-year starter who had 57tackles and 58 assists last year.

Brice Laughlin, a D-1 prospect, isthe only lineman returning ondefense. However, the senior willhave several big bodies up front tohelp him.

The Wave’s season rides on theteam’s success moving the ball inthe air. If it can do this, teams won’tbe able to key in on Summerville’stalented rushers. Unproven playersin the middle of the Wave defensewill also have to step up in order forthe team to repeat as regionchamps.

Fort Dorchester2008: 7-5Coach: Steve LaPrad (7th year)

Returning Starters: 14The Patriots only return one skills

player on offense, but it is theteam’s leading rusher. LaPrad saysthe team’s season will probably goas the performance of MichaelSellers goes. Last year, Sellersrushed for 871 yards and 12 touch-downs. With four starters returningto the offensive line, he shouldn’thave trouble matching or toppingthat this season.

Fort Dorchester is young at thequarterback and receiver positions, but that didn’t stop the team frommoving the ball in the air this pre-season. Sophomore Devron Glennis likely to get the starting QB spotsince he has an accurate arm andhas proven to be an elusive runner.

The heart of the team will be itsdefense, which has nine startersreturning – three defensive linemen, three linebackers and three defen-sive backs. The most highly toutedof that group are linebacker Geno

Cobras start their second season of play. CHS,playing with only freshmen and sophomores, fin-ished 2-8 a year ago and lost by some big num-bers. They have the look of a more mature foot-ball team physically and Cruce expects his squadto hold its own this fall.

Playing 6-AA in 2009 before a move to ClassAAA, the Cobras are still a year away and then allbets are off. It’ll be payback time then.

Both Cane Bay and Ashley Ridge will improvebut won’t put much of a dent in the region out-come that will have Bishop England and

Woodland battling it out for the top playoff spots.Burke, which finished 3-2 in regional play a yearago, will also be a threat.

Cross looks to bring excitement back to its foot-ball program with the addition of new coachShaun Wright.

The Trojans could find themselves in anothertight Region 6-A race, as the St. John’s Islanderslook to repeat as regional champs. Last year St.John’s finished with a 5-1 league record, bestingBaptist Hill and Cross, which finished with a 4-2conference record.

Academic Magnet and Hardeeville, which com-bined for two wins a year ago, should again bringup the rear in the competitive region.

SHINEfrom page 44

Porter and linemen Antonio Guy and MontaeAdams.

Last season, Guy and Adams combined tomake 176 tackles, including 13 for a loss andfour sacks. Porter was the team’s second lead-ing tackler in 2008 with 110 tackles including7.5 for a loss and four sacks.

The key to the Patriots’ season will be stayinghealthy and finishing strong. The team lostsome close games last year as well as somestandout athletes to injury.

Like the Wave, the Patriots will need todemonstrate they can move the ball in the air soteams can’t key in on their running backs.

Beaufort2008: 9-3Coach: Mark Clifford (6th year)Returning Starters: 5Beaufort opened practice this summer having

to replace its leading passer, leading rusher, leading tackler and leading pass defender. However under Clifford’s reign, the Eagleshave a good track record of replacing talentedathletes.

The Eagles love to run and that will be one oftheir strengths this season as the team returnsfour offensive linemen. Led by senior tacklePatrick Dennis, a contributor since his sopho-more year, they will open holes for a powerfulgroup of running backs.

Junior Josh McPherson will likely be the fea-tured back. He and Alex Simmons had a veryproductive preseason. The speedy DenecoHolmes will also see time in the backfield.

The Eagles have a healthy battle for the start-ing QB position between senior Thomas Grueland junior Beau Brown.

The Eagle defense will be led by D-1 prospectJustin Parker. The 6-2, 212-pound linebackerhad nearly 100 tackles last season. Fellow sen-ior Brandon Frazier will also play at linebacker.Much of the team’s season will ride on howwell its group of first-year starters in the sec-ondary perform.

Colleton County2008: 2-9Coach: Leroy Riley (22nd year)Returning Starters: 15Colleton’s starters are spread out all across the

field on both sides of the ball. The team hasexperience and depth.

The Cougars will likely rely on the pass morethan the other teams as it returns its leadingpasser in Kevin Adams and four receivers.Taurean Stephens and Willie Grant have seenthe most action, but Riley has confidence in allfour receivers. Adams is also capable of break-ing big runs.

The team has three experienced offensivelinemen. Eric Kirkland, who wasn’t a starterbut did play some last year, will likely be thefeatured running back.

The Cougar defense will be anchored bydefensive ends Andre Collum and JohnnyJones. The duo has experience and speed. Theteam also returns a pair of linebackers, a defen-sive lineman and a defensive back.

The Cougars simply need to concentrate onplaying smart football. If they are able to stopthe strong rushing attacks they will face, theymay surprise some teams.

West Ashley2008:3-8Coach: Bobby Marion (3rd year)Returning Starters: 13Marion says he feels good about his skills

positions. However, the team only returns onelineman on each side of the ball.

Leading the Wildcat offense will be K.J.Cohen, a three-year starter at quarterback whohas passed for 2,000 yards and rushed for1,200. His favorite targets will likely be wide-out Preston Bibler and tight end DonovanBurns, both returning starters. The offense alsoreturns its fullback, tailback and center.

The Wildcat defense will be anchored byreturning cornerbacks Mark Gillispie and NickBosley. The team also returns outside lineback-ers Mike Gillispie and Peter Choice as well asa defensive end, lineman and free safety.

The key to the season for the Wildcats will behow well their young linemen develop.
