Kittitas County Board of Commissioners

We welcome you to Kittitas County, just 100 miles east of Seat-tle across the Cascade Range in the geographic center of the state, situated at the crossroads of I-90 and I-82. The Pacific Crest Trailin the Cascade Range forms our boundary to the west, one of themost popular attractions in the Pacific Northwest. To the east isthe great Columbia River. Our region is flush with trails and parksoffering something for everyone. Topography in our county variesfrom the ruggedly forested Alpine Lakes Wilderness of the We-natchee National Forest in the snow-capped majesty of the CascadeMountains and Snoqualmie National Forest, to the mighty Colum-bia Gorge, which channels the river through sheer rock canyonsand winds it around gently rolling hills. We are a four seasonsMecca for recreationists, with comparable amenities in any one ofseveral attractive communities ready to invite you in. We’re de-lighted to have you. Enjoy your stay.

Welcome to Kittitas County. I want to tellyou I’ve lived here since 1946. I started fromscratch, when everyone had their own gardenand livestock.

I’ve seen this county grow, since the daywhen it was prospering with industries like coalmining and logging – and the people have neverchanged: hard working, community minded, andthe friendliest you’ll ever find anywhere.

It’s a beautiful place to live and to visit.I’ve always felt safe here, surrounded by themajestic scenery of the Pacific Northwest.

I want to share with you a story about myAunt Mae. She traveled extensively aroundthis great country of ours, and when shecame to Kittitas County for the first time shesaid, “This is the most beautiful place I’veever seen,” without exception.

I believe that to be true.So again, welcome. Enjoy your stay and – do come back again.

Welcome to Cle Elum, at the heart of Washingtonstate, a four seasons gateway to alpine wilder-ness, one of the state’s most popular destinationsfor outdoor recreationists of every persuasion. The city is steeped in history, rich with an oldworld cultural influence reflected in our down-town district, host to a variety of restaurants, acentury-old bakery, state renowned butchershops, country breakfast nooks, lodging retreats, and a healthy variety of sole proprietor store-fronts. Nestled between the Yakima and Cle ElumRivers, we offer a friendly, comfortable, small-town atmosphere, with plenty of fresh mountain air and night skies

full of stars. This is a great place to enjoylife and to get in touch with a pace that’seasy on the mind, rejuvenating to theheart. Whether you’re in the city for ashort visit or a long one, I wholeheartedlywish you a happy and memorable visit.

Welcome to Roslyn, a Pacific Northwest moun-tain hamlet steeped in history written by coalminers, home of television’s Emmy-winning se-ries Northern Exposure. We’re a living expres-sion of smalltown America looked like and feltlike – back in the day. We are a Preserve Amer-ica Community with 27 properties on our His-toric Register. Our rich heritage lingers in ourbuildings, our 32 ethnic cemeteries, the miningslag piles framing our borders, and the Coal Min-ers Memorial. Our museum is one of the best inthe county. Roslyn is also an entry and exit

point where you can relax before and after your expedition. We havemiles of trails fit for hikers and bikers, horseback riders, cross country skiers, and snowmobile enthusiasts. I’m so happyto have this opportunity to open the doorand invite you in. It’s nice to have you.Enjoy your visit and … do come again.

Welcome to one of the smallest towns in thestate. We have no hub-bub. Visit Iron HorseState Park, site of the historic Milwaukee Rail-road Depot. Or stop in at the classic bed andbreakfast next door, where you can spend thenight in an old fashioned caboose. From SouthCle Elum you can hop on the John Wayne Pio-neer Trail, a magnificent way to tour the coun-tryside on foot, on horseback, or by wagon. Viathe trail you can follow the Yakima River. Don’tforget to bring your fishing rod, and by the

way, for the sec-ond year our town is host to the Rails toAles Brewfest, featuring over 30 craftbrews. We’ll have live music and plentyto eat. Drop by for a visit. Nice to haveyou in town. Enjoy your stay.

State Parks in Washington will be open this summer, accordingto Linda Burnett, Public Affairs officer for the Washington StateParks and Recreation Commission. “Times are tough,” she said, “butwe’re thrilled to be open this summer, though we could really usesome help.” When you visit a State Park, you can donate the $5 Bur-nett is asking for and deposit it in a State Park pay tube called anIron Ranger. Every park has one. You can also donate when re-newing your Washington vehicle registration or you can visitwww.washingtonstateparksfoundation.org.

There are five State Parks inside Kittitas County, extendingfrom the Columbia River to Easton. Each park offers its own beautyand provides easy access. Hunting inside state park perimeters isprohibited.Iron Horse State Park is touted to be among the longest linear parksin the country. There are no motorized vehicles (except where posted, sosnowmobiles can cross) allowed on this old Milwaukee Railroad path, whichtraverses the entire state of Washington. It’s the Iron Horse State Parkand about 100-miles (including the distance in Kittitas County) is main-tained as the John Wayne Pioneer Trail (JWPT). The trail is open to all butmotorized vehicles. Pets need to be leashed. Be aware that nearly all ofthe tunnels are closed indefinitely. Officials are working on detours atthis time, but there is no telling when they’ll be completed. For details anddirections to six trailheads in our county, camping and interpretive stops, visit www.parks.wa.gov and click on Iron Horse State Park.

Salmon Viewing TrailEvery year in February and March, from the

fish hatchery in Cle Elum, nearly one million, six-inch-long Spring Chinook Salmon are transportedby tanker truck to three release facilities in Kitti-tas County: Easton, Thorp, and Teanaway’s JackCreek. By the end of May, nearly all the fish haveleft the release sites on a journey that will takethem 400-miles down the Yakima and Columbiarivers to the sea, and then northward to the Gulf ofAlaska. There they feed for up to four years beforereturning to Kittitas County to spawn and die. Findout more about this intriguing circle of life from thehatchery’s summer host family, charged to conducttours and perform outreach programs with the gen-eral public from May through September.

If you wind up in Cle Elum between May andSeptember, take a trip to the Salmon ViewingTrail. To get there, follow SR903 out of town to-ward Lake Cle Elum, through Roslyn and Ronald, and look for the small brown and white sign onthe righthand side of SR903 opposite MorrelRoad, which reads ‘Salmon Walk.’ Morrel Roadwill take you to a lefthand turnoff marked withthe same sign, where you will find parking and atrail that leads to the river walk. The trail ismarked with kiosks explaining the salmon cycle.

To get to the hatchery from First Street in CleElum, turn south on South Cle Elum Way. Take theright beneath the bridge and follow that road untilyou see the sign for the hatchery. For more infor-mation call the hatchery on 509-674-3704.

Take a tour of the

Coal Mines TrailThe Coal Mines Trail is a little more than the

width of a car, surfaced with gravel, and flat formost of the haul. It’s one of the Upper County’spremier efforts to preserve a piece of their his-tory with a memory lane that winds from Ronaldthrough Roslyn, and to Cle Elum, along the oldrail bed that once served the Northern PacificRailway, beginning in 1886. For 4.7-miles thetrail is perfect for horses, too. In winter, outdoorrecreationists use the trail for ski-joring, snow-shoes, or cross-country skiing on a profession-ally groomed surface.

A free tour bookletguide is available at theNKC Tribune office inCle Elum, on 807 WestDavis Street, RoslynCity Hall, 100 E. Penn-sylvania Ave., Cle ElumRoslyn Chamber Visi-tor Information Center, 401 W. First St., CleElum, and most local museums. The guide pro-vides numbers of several trail signs with histor-ical information, as well as directions to parkingand public access spots on the trail. Eightbenches along the way offer a place to relax.

History and Genealogyaround the County

A great place to start your research in Kittitas County is the Historyand Genealogy website found at www.washingtongenealogy.com/kittitas.

The site is a repository of great stuff, in-cluding vital statistics records, a sur-name registry, history and obituaries, inaddition to a Kittitas County Genealogy.

Museums in the county offer awealth of information, too, including ar-tifacts, photographs, and documents. TheTelephone Museum in Cle Elum displaysthe old-time ‘plug and play’ switchboards. In Roslyn, curator Nick Henderson, oneof the Upper County’s most informed tra-dition bearers, has done a mind-bogglingjob of re-assembling Roslyn’s coal miningpast, to include a real relic: a train ofcars once used to transport miners intothe mine, which sits outside the museumon a rail constructed by local volunteers.

Kittitas County cemeteries in-clude at least three that date back to theearly and mid-1800s. In Cle Elum reststhe headstone of the only coastguards-man in history to receive the Congres-sional Medal of Honor: Douglas Munroe. At the cemetery in Ellensburg view theheadstone of the city’s namesake. In theSwauk Prairie Cemetery, enter a sacredplace where rest many of the pioneersouls who built the county. The town ofRoslyn is home to a rich diversity of eth-nic cemeteries, thirty-two of them, datingback to 1886. For a complete listing ofcemeteries in the county logon towww.washingtongenealogy.com/kitti-tas/cemeteries.htm.

And don’t be remiss. The oral tradition in the Upper County is excep-tionally strong, always a great resource for history and genealogy buffs. Anyof the museums listed below will direct you to the people who may help youin your research. In addition, the NKC Tribune runs a regular column calledKittitas County Roots, drawing on dated photos and stories from past issuesof the newspaper. And, if you’re in town, drop by the NKC Tribune and browsea daunting collection of old newspapers, dating back to the 1800s.

VINTAGE VEHICLES on display at the Kittitas County HistoricalMuseum, located at 114 E. Third Ave., in Ellensburg. Horseless car-riages pictured, include: a 1910 Flanders 20, a 1914 Model T DepotHack “Woodie”, and a 1903 Holsman.

WDFWis using their website http://wdfw.wa.gov to sell licenses onlineand to provide sportsmen with lastminute alerts to rules and regula-tions changes everyone is obligatedto abide by. Check the website orcall the hotline published below, be-fore you head out for the day.

FISHINGRules and regulations for 2009-

10 are included in a printed pam-phlet available for free at retailsporting goods stores around Wash-ington or at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regs_seasons.html. TheWDFW Hotline for Fishing RuleChanges is 360-902-2500. Or checkthe emergency rule link online at: https://fortress.wa.gov/dfw/erules/efishrules.

Where to Fish in around hereKittitas County is home to

three reservoirs, and a mind-bog-gling number of streams, lakes, andrivers, including the Columbia, CleElum, and Teanaway. Visit www.washingtonlakes.com (excellentwebsite) for a rundown on lakes, fish, and directions to boat ramps. The same website lists rivers.

Through the county runs theYakima, hailed as one of this coun-try’s Blue Ribbon flyfishing rivers, for catch and release.

Looking to take the kids out forsome quick hook-and-worm action?Try the following spots, usuallystocked.

ELLENSBURG: Fio Rito Lakes– Two lakes located just south of El-lensburg. You can see them on yourleft if traveling on I-82 towardsYakima. Some big brown have beencaught in the fall. Brute stock rain-bows averaging 6-10 pounds arecommon, as are bass. Trout average11-15 inches. No boat launch. Gasmotors prohibited. Directions:From I-82, take Thrall Road exit.Turn at the Public Fishing sign.

ELLENSBURG: Mattoon Lake– This spot offers good fishing for8 to 14-inch rainbows. Good bankfishing opportunity for those whodo not have boats. From Ellensburg, follow Main Street south to whereit becomes South Canyon Road andtake a right onto Umptanum Road.Go about a half-mile to a rocky side-road on your left, where a sign says‘Recreation Area.’ Follow it to Ma-toon Lake, an artifact of the I-90construction project visible fromthe freeway.

EASTON: Easton Ponds –Three former gravel pits stockedwith brown and rainbow trout. Lo-

cated on the east side of Easton, onthe south side of the Yakima River.Adjacent to I-90, Exit 71.

that’s really KEEN? Look no further than what the Kitti-tas Environmental Education Network (KEEN) programhas to offer your entire family. This non-profit organizationis run by volunteers and hosts fun, hands-on activities thatprovide educational information about the environment. AtKEEN events, there are “stations” to visit showing inter-esting artifacts, information and sometimes live critters. Each exhibit (station) is hosted by a field expert just wait-ing to answer questions and show what they brought to theevent. Or you can attend one of the many annual field tripshosted by KEEN.Visit the KEEN website www.kittitasee.net/for a current event schedule and detailed information.

Run away with Orienteering challengeDo you like to hike in the wilderness? How about

with the whole family? If that’s what you’d like to do,it might be fun to get with other folks who like to dothe same thing via a sport called ‘orienteering’ thatteaches you skills about map reading while you enjoybeing outside. Each year, there are competitions heldin our county, but the Cascade Orienteering Club haspermanent orienteering courses you so can practicewithout waiting for an event to take place.

Most events are structured with beginnercourses too. No one receives a map of the course(s)until they begin the race on the clock. There arecheckpoints along each course that are set up to re-ceive manual or electronic orienteering checkpoint

devices. It’s up to you to read your map well enoughto actually find the flagged checkpoints! Winners aredetermined according to each checkpoint you getrecorded and your time. Actually, it’s a fun, safe (ori-enteering folks match the registration names withthose who have completed the race) event with no agebarriers. This is a good way to enjoy getting out as afamily and learn about reading maps. It also helpsthat registration fees are kept at a minimum.

According to the websites, events are plannedthis year on June 25 and 26 in our area, so check outCascade Orienteering www.cascadeoc.org/ and thePacific Northwest Orienteering Festival www.pnwof.org/salmonrun/ for updates.

Depot Days and Rails to Ales Brewfest

It’s full steam ahead to the 100-yearanniversary of the South CleElum Depot, Friday-Saturday, June12-13. Ten decades ago in 1909, thewooden depot was brand new – just in

time for the Milwaukee Road Railroad’s completion of its Pacific Coastline. Depot Days is a family event and an opportunity to turn back intime to 1909, when railroads were the kings of industry. Re-enactors inperiod costume set the scene as visitors learn about the working tele-graph office, send and receive telegrams as well as visit the depot’s postoffice and pick up a special commemorative postmark honoring theevent. One hundred years ago it was the era of silent movies, ragtimeand the foxtrot, so enjoy a film where you can cheer the hero and boothe villain. Or, listen to up-beat musical rhythms as you wander thedepot grounds taking in the historical flavor of the site.

If Depot Days “wets your train whistle” for more, find it sat-isfied on Saturday, July 11, when the rail yard hosts the second an-nual Rails to Ales Brewfest. This is a fundraiser for Cascade RailFoundation, the folks who spearheaded the depot’s restoration alongwith Washington State Parks and other railroad enthusiasts. It’s partof their continuing mission to preserve Milwaukee Road history.Brewfest is an opportunity to enjoy the railroad ambiance while sam-pling the finest craft beers in the region. Washington State wines arealso available at this year’s event. Look for a dozen brewers, two livebands and food vendors at this ‘railroad and brews’ experience.Rounding out the festive fun is entertainment, games and prizes. Thispromises to be a fun-filled day for adults 21 and over. For more in-formation on either event, visit: www.RailsToAlesBrewfest.com.

Art and music: Roslyn’s ‘Last Friday’ tradition

Just remember the phrase ‘final Friday of every month.’ That’s whenthe town of Roslyn pulls the veil over the 9-to-5, lights the street sidefirepots, and calls in mountain-loving musicians and artists of everyage and ability for a tradition started by the good people who operate anorganization called Roslyn Re-vitalization. The event hasbeen dubbed Final Friday Artand Music Walk, and eachmonth it offers the generalpublic a different slice of theKittitas County pie. In themonth of April, for example, area students were tasked toshow their best work. On theother side of the coin, in pastmonths, a healthy variety ofwork by accomplished and tal-ented artists has been show-cased: sculptors, painters, andmusicians of every sort. This festival is a chance forartists from all over the country to paint in beautiful Kittitas Countyand learn from four nationally known masters of the genre: Ned Mueller,Jim Lamb, Dianna Shyne and Diane McClary.

“It’s for all artists,” said organizer, Karen Watland. “Everyone canget new ideas and begin to see in a different way by watching these mas-ters who have honed their skills over decades.” The master artists con-duct workshops weekdays at a variety of locations in the Upper County– with an emphasis on their unique approach to this artistic expres-sion. Participants must register for these workshops.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, a whole day of painting at the beautifulSpringwood Ranch in Thorp includes lunch for registered participantswith a Quick Draw by plein air artists in the afternoon. “There’s achance to bid on these plein air masterpieces in the evening,” Watlandsaid. Also that evening, artists, art lovers and visitors looking for an en-joyable summer event can sign up for the sirloin and barbecue chickendinner at the Springwood Ranch Party Barn, with live music providedby Ellensburg’s Prairie Spring. The evening includes an art sale; silentauction and a live auction conducted by local auctioneer Dick Mills, anentertaining master of the trade. On the auction block guests will findartwork as well as sponsor-donated functional and whimsical itemsfrom the big to the small.

Additionally, registered plein air artists may participate in the‘Plein Air Paint-Out.’ This weeklong activity allows painters to work in-dependently with maps and guidance from High Country Artists, thelocal group behind this festival.

These independent artists may enter their artwork daily for a ju-ried show and reception to be held at the Carpenter House Museum andArt Gallery (Third and Billings St., Cle Elum) on Sunday, Aug. 9.

The Saturday evening dinner and auction is open to everyone –not just artists. Information about registration and prices is availableat www.highcountryartists.com or call 509-674-3881.

This is a fundraising event for HCA. Those funds are used to pro-mote the arts in Upper Kittitas County, support student art projects andcontribute to the ongoing operation of the Carpenter House Museumand Art Gallery. Organizers hope to expand FAAF in the future to in-clude things like photography, a writer’s retreat, evening musical per-formances and live theater in the park.

Upper Kittitas County serves as a gateway con-necting Eastern and Western Washington through a40-mile stretch of Washington's Interstate-90 (I-90)corridor. According to former Washington StateSecretary of Transportation, Sid Morrison, this sec-tion of I-90 hosts over 12 million travelers eachyear. Additionally, the area spans 800 square milesof countless recreational activities. Recognizing thevast gap in the Emergency Medical System (EMS),a local group of community members vowed towork together with the local volunteer fire depart-ments to make a difference. The nonprofit organi-zation, Life Support was formed. Established onthe philosophy of giving back to the community, the organization raises funds to purchase medicaland rescue equipment to protect and serve you andyour family, as well as all who frequent the area. For nine years, Life Support’s community activistshave given generously of their time and talents toensure your emergency medical needs are met. Runsolely by volunteers, with contributions filling theneeds of local EMS providers. To date, Life Sup-port has raised over $4 million to purchase 4x4 aidunits, extrication equipment, medical supplies, training and to build out the EMS infrastructure.

This year, Life Support will celebrate the groundbreaking of three new EMS facilities,

strategically stationed for fast response times.

Centennial CenterHeart...at heart of the Cascades

Tucked away on 719East Third Street in Cle Elumis a building that houses peo-ple who say they believe inthe values of olden day com-munities: get together, eat, socialize, function like an ex-tended family, the way smalltown communities used tobe. The building is called theUpper County CentennialCenter, aka Senior Center, but don’t let the name foolyou. The Center offers exer-cise classes, bingo, dancing, and it also hosts a variety ofspecial events, includingbazaars, barbecues, spaghetti and crab feeds, concerts, workshops,Pinochle and more. The Cen-ter, and more so the peoplewho run it, are arguably theheart of the Upper Countycommunity. The Center was just a vision 16-years ago. Now it’s a heartland-gathering place for all ages. Need something to read? They’ve even got a li-brary. For more information call the Center at (509) 674-7530.

Grange hosts family socialsWhen it comes to ‘fantabulous’ fun and food, you’ll find both and more

at the Swauk-Teanaway Grange, 1341 Ballard Hill Road in Cle Elum.Events throughout the year include dances and potluck socials, local andnationally known entertainers, cowboys and chili, a local talent show, atraditional hunter’s breakfast, a Christmas Bazaar and public forums –among others. Westside visitor’s charter buses for some of the well-knownevents at the Grange; and locals find it’s a great place for community build-ing. On the serious side, the Grange provides a public meeting place to ex-plore important issues and advocates for concerns important to ruralKittitas County. Events are open to members and non-members alike. Infact, non-members are encouraged to come, visit and see what the hulla-baloo is all about. For more information: Gerry Lloyd, (509) 674-1989.

Community FactoidsLIBERTY, WAThere is a very small community in Kittitas County called Liberty. It re-mains a small place not only on the map, but because there are only 14residents. The town is nestled in the Cascade Mountains at an elevationof 2650 feet and is bordered on its perimeters by National Forest land.Liberty has been on the National and State Historical Register since Oc-tober 15, 1974, thanks to the many efforts of Henrietta Fackler whowas a resident of Liberty for many years. A placard was given to thetown stating its historical value and still stands to this day. People liv-ing in and near Liberty are a hardy sort and will stand strong for right-eousness, proving that the name of “Liberty” is well given.

KITTITAS, WAThe City of Kittitas may be a small city by most standards because itonly has 1135 people living in it and one main street. But, it has been acity since 1931 and there is a lot to do in Kittitas. There is a Library, el-ementary, middle and high schools, a city park and one of the trailheadsfor the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. The town hosts the Fiddler’s Conven-tion each summer and is one of the only places in the country where youcan watch (for free) a car show, parade, and burnouts!

VANTAGE, WAVantage is a small community located in Kittitas County that only hasabout 70 people living there. But, in the summer it comes alive and itseems to be very busy! That’s because it sits right on the ColumbiaRiver’s edge at the county’s eastern boundary. The canyon walls sur-rounding the river are a delight and offer much to take away any bore-dom. There is also a public area for day-use picnics and boat launchingthat’s easily visible. The Gorge at George is only 13 miles to the eastand you can go to the Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park InterpretiveCenter, or the Petrified Forest Interpretive Trails. Enjoy easy access tothe Wanapum Recreation Area andeven the Iron Horse State Park JohnWayne Pioneer Trail. Be preparedwith camping reservations (or youwill be turned away) and food so youdon’t have to wait in line at one ofthe few places to eat. The WanapumRecreation Area is part of the StateParks system and also has a boatlaunch, visit their website:www.parks.wa.gov or call 1(800)226-7688 for camping reservations.
