2009  George  Eastman  House  Annual  Report

Treasurer’s  Report    George  Eastman  House  ended  fiscal  year  2009  with  total  assets  of  $50.2  million,  including  $35.2  million  in  long-‐term  investments,  $10.3  million  in  fixed  assets,  and  $4.7  million  in  cash,  pledges,  grants  receivable,  and  other  current  assets.  The  $50.2  million  in  total  assets  is  an  increase  of  $3.3  million  or  7.1%  over  year-‐end  2008.  This  increase  includes  $4.0  million  in  long-‐term  investments  partially  offset  by  a  decline  of  $0.7  million  in  grants  receivable.  Our  pooled  endowment  for  operations  earned  an  investment  return  of  22.03%,  exceeding  its  equities/fixed  income  benchmark  index  of  21.02%.  In  keeping  with  standard  museum  practice,  George  Eastman  House  does  not  capitalize  its  collections.    The  Museum  reported  operating  income  of  $7.7  million  in  2009,  a  decrease  of  $0.7  million  or  8.4%  compared  to  2008.  Of  this  decrease,  $0.4  million  came  from  contributions  and  grants  and  $0.3  million  resulted  from  reduced  withdrawals  from  the  museum’s  endowments  for  operations,  attributable  to  the  impact  of  the  2008  decline  in  the  U.S.  and  worldwide  financial  markets.  Earned  income  reached  $2.1  million  in  2009,  an  increase  of  $0.1  million  over  2008  led  by  sale  of  the  limited  edition  deluxe  portfolio  of  photographs  marking  the  museum’s  60th  anniversary.  In  total,  George  Eastman  House  generated  a  small  operating  surplus  for  the  year.    The  accompanying  summaries  highlight  the  Museum’s  financial  position  and  performance  for  2009.    The  financial  statements  are  audited  by  the  accounting  firm  DeJoy,  Knauf  &  Blood  LLP,  and  copies  of  the  audited  financial  statements  may  be  obtained  free  of  charge  by  calling  or  writing  the  Museum’s  controller.    Lisa  Brubaker,  Treasurer
