Legend of the Phoenix Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoe-nix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong - the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix - reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, class-rooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly

renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoe-nix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoe-nix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence. There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire!

Academic Excellence• Elon University is a dynamic private comprehensive university known for excellent arts and sciences along with outstanding professional programs. The Education Trust recognizes Elon for excellence in freshman retention and outstanding graduation rates.

• Elon was named the nation’s #1 “School to Watch” by U.S. News & World Report in the magazine’s 2009 “America’s Best Colleges” guide. The 70 colleges and universities on the list are noted as “schools everyone should be watching.”

• U.S. News & World Report also ranks Elon #2 among 118 Southern master’s level universities and among the top universities in the nation in the following “Programs to Look For” categories: first-year experiences, study abroad, internships, under-graduate research/creative projects, learning communities, service learning and senior capstone. No other school in the nation received so many top rankings.

• Elon consistently earns top ratings in the annual National Survey of Student Engagement on each of the five benchmarks of excellence: - level of academic challenge - active and collaborative learning - student-faculty interaction - enriching educational experiences - supportive campus environment

• Elon offers 51 majors in four schools and has a total of 4,992 undergraduate and 636 graduate students. The average class size is 22 with an overall student to faculty ratio of 14 to 1.

Affordability• Elon offers a top-value education: In 2009, both Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and The Princeton Review named Elon one of the nations’s top 50 “best value” private universities. The 2009 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges named Elon a “best buy” univer-sity, based on academic quality and reasonable cost.

• Elon is one of the nation’s top seven best values for students who want to attend a university with outstanding academics at an affordable cost, according to Bruce G. Hammond, former managing editor of the Fiske Guide to Colleges, in an article on Reader’s Digest.com

Academic Support• The Elon University Athletics Department is proactive in ensuring the academic success of all student-athletes from their recruiting visit through graduation. Integral components of academic support for athletics include the academic enhancement program, registra-tion services, tutorial services, travel notices, recruiting visits, laptops and life skills.

• All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accom-modate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are avail-able to complete monitored study hours.

• In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities.

Dave Blank begins his fourth year as the Elon University Director

of Athletics, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic prog-ress, marketing and fundraising. During his first three years at Elon, he ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Pro-vost, and a plan for facility improvements, including an now completed renovation of the Latham Park baseball facility, perma-nent bleachers for soccer, a state-of-the-art golf practice facility, and an in-progress field house at the North Athletics Complex. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Champion-ships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet that will help shape the future of Division I athletics. During the 2008-09 campaign, five Phoenix squads earned higher league finishes than they had in the previous year. The Phoenix captured regular-season

Southern Conference titles in both men’s soccer and baseball with the baseball squad advancing to its third NCAA re-gional appearance in the past four seasons. The men’s tennis team fell just one win shy of a berth into NCAA play, but saw its first-ever individuals earn spots into the post-season tournament. In 2007-08, 12 of Elon’s 16 sports programs finished higher in the Southern Conference than the previous year. The Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular-season and tourna-ment crowns en route to a NCAA regional appearance. Also, Elon fell just one victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon posted SoCon outright regular-season and tour-nament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), foot-ball (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007, 2008 and 2009) and baseball (2008 and 2009) teams have all earned national rank-ings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Ath-letics in 2006 after spending six years in the same position at Drake University where he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a com-bined grade point average of 3.0 or above.

Also, Blank oversaw the addition of three women’s sports — crew, golf and soccer — as well as the completion of a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium. Blank has served as a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance and Football Is-sues Committees. In 2005, he received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation. Prior to 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athlet-ics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). He also spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in school history. He was named Pennsyl-vania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance). He earned a Master of Science degree in Business Ad-ministration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Dr. Leo M. LambertElon UniversityPresident

Since becoming Elon University’s eighth presi-dent in January 1999, Leo

M. Lambert has advanced an ambitious agenda to establish Elon as a top-ranked liberal arts university and a national model of engaged teaching and learning. Under President Lambert’s leadership, Elon has accomplished broad improve-ments in academic and student life programs while continuing to develop a campus that consistently ranks among the nation’s most beautiful. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened through major in-vestments in faculty development, library resources, honors and fellows programs for outstanding students, and Elon’s top-ranked programs in study abroad, under-graduate research, volunteer service, and leadership education. In 2001 Elon College became Elon University, and the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan was developed under Presi-dent Lambert’s leadership. He directed

the establishment of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences and both the School of Communications and the School of Education that same year. In 2006, Dr. Lambert led the drive to open the Elon University School of Law in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. New facilities constructed during President Lambert’s tenure include Carol Grotnes Belk Library, Rhodes Stadium, Belk Track and White Field, the six-building Academic Village, Ernest A. Koury Sr. Busi-ness Center, Ellington Health Center, The Oaks residence hall complex, Colonnades Dining Hall and the Colonnades residence halls, and several new residence halls and a commons building in Danieley Center. President Lambert has assumed a number of leadership roles regionally and nationally, serving on the national and North Carolina boards of Campus Com-pact and as a founding board member and president’s council chair of Project Peri-cles, a national organization that encour-ages students to become civically engaged in their communities. As a result, Elon has twice been named one of the nation’s top universities for community service in the President’s Higher Education Community

Service Honor Roll. President Lambert has provided leadership on athletics issues, serving as a member of the NCAA Presidential Task Force on the Future of Division I Athletics and chairing the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification. In 2008 Dr. Lambert was appointed to the Commission on Effective Leadership by the American Council on Education and also to the North Carolina Higher Education Civic Education Study Com-mission. In 2009, he was named a director of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), which com-prises more than 1,150 public and private colleges and universities. Lambert has a bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Geneseo, a master’s in education from the Universi-ty of Vermont in Burlington, and a doctor-ate in education from Syracuse University. President Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

Darren Powell enters his fifth season as the

head coach of the Phoenix men’s soccer program. Powell came to Elon in Decem-ber 2004 after serving four seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro. Last season, Powell led Elon to its first-ever NCAA Division I league title and a perfect 7-0-0 mark in conference play dur-ing the regular season. The team boasted a 10-9-1 record, forward Justin Wyatt was named SoCon Player of the Year and Powell was honored as the conference’s top coach, his second such honor in four seasons with the Phoenix. Eight Elon play-ers earned first or second team All-SoCon honors and one player was named to the All-Freshman squad. In Powell’s four seasons at the helm of the Elon squad, the program has produced 20 All-Southern Conference performers, a conference player of the year and a league freshman of the year. In 2007, Powell guided the Phoenix to an 8-7-4 overall record, marking the program’s first back-to-back winning sea-sons since 1987 and 1988. Elon went 4-3-0 in SoCon play to finish tied for third. Along the way, his team earned ties with North Carolina, Clemson and eventual national champion Wake Forest. The tie with top-ranked Wake Forest provided the Demon Deacons with their first blem-ish of the season. Under Powell’s leadership, the Elon program claimed its first-ever NCAA Division I national ranking in 2006 – appearing as high as 22nd in the Soccer

America poll on Sept. 12 after starting the campaign with a 6-1-0 ledger, including a 2-0 victory over then-No. 17 UAB. His team finished the year at 10-8-2 overall, the program’s first winning year since moving to the Division I ranks for the 1999 season. In his first season with the Phoenix, Powell led the squad to a 9-9-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 mark in SoCon ac-tion, finishing third in the league. Elon emerged from that campaign with two first-team All-SoCon selections, two second-team all-league honorees, the SoCon Freshman of the Year, three SoCon Players of the Week, two SoCon All-Tour-nament picks, two NSCAA All-South Region players, one College Soccer News All-Freshman choice and one USL profes-sional player. For his efforts, Powell was honored as the 2005 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. During Powell’s four seasons at UNCG, the Spartan program posted a 55-26-3 mark and became the nation’s top-ranked program during the regular season in 2004. Powell assisted in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, sched-uling and academic development. Powell was honored as one of the top NCAA Division I assistant coaches by College Soccer News and coached three MLS play-ers, one NSCAA Senior All-Star, three All-Americans, one Academic All-American, four All-Region honorees, 22 All-SoCon selections, two conference freshman of the year award winners and one league player of the year while at UNCG. Prior to joining the Spartan staff, Powell headed the Greensboro College men’s soccer program for three seasons, posting a 50-12-3 ledger. He led the Pride to the NCAA Division III finals in 1998 and Dixie Conference titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000. His program produced a MLS and English Premier League player, two NSCAA Senior All-Stars, three All-Amer-icans, 15 All-Region choices, 25 All-Dixie Conference selections, three league players of the year and two conference rookies of the year. In 1998, Powell was honored by the NSCAA as the South Re-gion Coach of the Year after being named the Dixie Conference Coach of the Year. The Pride finished ranked second in the nation in 1998, eighth in the country in 1999 and 12th nationally in 2000. Following a four-year collegiate career at UNC Greensboro, Powell played professionally for the Carolina Dynamo USISL team, the Raleigh Flyers A-League team and the Wilmington Hammerheads USISL team from 1995-1999. At UNCG, Powell helped the Spartans to two NCAA

Jason O’KeefeAssociate Head CoachThird seasonGreensboro ‘97

Jason O’Keefe was promoted to the role of

associate head coach in June 2009 after serving on coach Darren Powell’s staff as an assistant coach for two seasons. Dur-ing his time with the Phoenix, Elon has posted consecutive winning seasons with an overall mark of 18-16-5, winning its first-ever Southern Conference regular-season title in 2008. “Jason has been instrumental in mov-ing this program forward on the field and in the classroom,” Powell said of O’Keefe’s promotion. “His passion for college soccer has been evident in his day-to-day approach and on the recruit-ing trail.” O’Keefe came to Elon in February 2007 after serving as an assistant at the University of Cincinnati during the 2006 season. O’Keefe helped the Bearcats to an 11-6-2 overall record and a Big East regular-season title. Cincinnati also par-ticipated in the 2006 NCAA College Cup, falling to Northwestern University in the first round. Prior to joining the staff at Cincinnati, O’Keefe worked as an assistant at Wake Forest for three seasons. During his time

with the Demon Deacons, the program compiled a 42-18-4 overall tally. In 2004, Wake won the ACC regular-season crown and was the top seed in the NCAA Tour-nament. The 2005 squad posted a 13-8-2 record and advanced to the third round of the NCAA College Cup. O’Keefe has coached under Powell one other time, serving as an assistant coach at Greensboro, his alma mater, in 2000. Powell left after the 2000 season, but O’Keefe spent two more seasons with the Pride. Greensboro captured three consecutive regular-season and tourna-ment crowns and achieved a ranking in the NCAA-III top-10 in each of O’Keefe’s years with the team. O’Keefe, who holds a USSF “A” license and NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, is a North Carolina ODP staff coach and was the head coach of the Carolina Dyna-mo Super Y-League from 2002-06. He also coached the Super Y-League South Atlantic Regional team from 2004-06. O’Keefe is involved in youth soccer as well and cur-rently serves as the director of coaching for the local Burlington Soccer Club. O’Keefe graduated from Greensboro in 1997 with a degree in history and education. He played for the Pride from 1992-1996, helping the team to three NCAA-III Tournament appearances, a 1994 conference title and a 1996 South Region championship.

Joe CrumpGoalkeepers CoachThird seasonUNC Greensboro ‘03

Joe Crump is in his third year with the Phoe-

nix program and serves as the squad’s goalkeepers coach. In each of the last two seasons, at least one Elon goalkeeper has been honored with All-Southern Conference accolades. In 2007, Elon true freshman keeper Clint Irwin claimed all-league honors and Phoenix keepers combined to help lead the program to a school-record four con-secutive shutouts. Last year, Irwin and senior Kyle Boerner were both named to the all-conference teams. Irwin had a GAA of 0.90 and stopped 31 shots while Boerner recorded a save percentage of .742. The Phoenix have compiled a record of 18-16-5 over the last two years, posting

two consecutive winning seasons and a SoCon regular-season crown in 2008. “Joe has worked well with our team and goalkeepers in particular the last cou-ple of years,” head coach Darren Powell said. “Having two keepers named to the All-Southern Conference team for the first time in league history shows how well he has improved our goalkeeping staff. Joe is a very loyal coach who always gives more than is expected of him.” Crump has also been a North Caro-lina ODP staff member and goalkeep-ers coach for Triangle United. Crump assisted the Region III champions and USYSA National Finalists. A 2003 UNC Greensboro graduate, Crump played for Powell at UNCG as a three-year starting goalie. Crump holds a bachelor’s degree in business administra-tion with a concentration in marketing and is a USSF licensed coach.

2009 Phoenix Men’s Soccer6

The 2009 Elon men’s soccer team is looking forward to building on the success of last year, returning eight starters from a team that ran through the Southern Conference slate and won the program’s first-ever regular-season league crown. The Phoenix soccer program has contin-ued to thrive under the leadership of head coach Darren Powell, the reigning SoCon Coach of the Year. Now in his fifth season at Elon, the Phoenix has posted .500 or bet-ter records in each of his four years. “We are very excited about the 2009 season,” Powell commented. “We return 22 players from last year’s conference championship team. The players have been working very hard this spring and I hope that momentum will carry us well into the fall with our difficult schedule.” One of the most notable faces re-turning to the lineup this year is senior midfielder Justin Wyatt. The 2008 SoCon Player of the Year racked up a team and league-best 13 goals and 33 points. Wyatt, a first-team all-conference honoree, is currently tied for second in the Phoenix record books for career goals (26) and points (64). He netted a goal in every SoCon match last year and his ability to finish will be critical to Elon’s success. Also looking to help the Phoenix at-tack in 2009 will be senior Erfan Imeni, junior Stephen Dilger, sophomore Denzel Ogunyase and freshmen Chris Thomas and Archie Karpeh. From his attacking midfielder position, Imeni scored five goals and assisted on four others during his junior season. Imeni was another of Elon’s eight all-conference members in 2008, recognized with first-team honors. Dilger connected on two strikes and tallied three assists during his sopho-more season. Two of his helpers came on game-winning goals, including one on the golden goal against UNC Asheville. As a true freshman, Ogunyase saw ac-tion in 17 games last year and had strong spring performances as well. Rookie Chris Thomas, the reigning Gatorade Georgia Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year, could have an immediate impact on the Phoenix. Thomas netted 143 goals during his prep career, leading Greater Atlanta Christian to three state titles. Karpeh, who joined the Elon team in the spring, has been a member of the U.S. U-17 Na-tional Team and was a two-time adidas All-American. Joining Wyatt and Imeni in the mid-field will be a healthy mix of experienced veterans and young talents. Junior Brad Franks and sophomore James Carroll were consistent starters last season.

Franks dropped in two goals, including the game-winner over league rival Fur-man to keep Elon’s undefeated season intact. Carroll’s play earned him a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team. Seniors Daniel Street and Stephen Miller, junior Hunter Miller and sopho-mores Drew Gardner and Tony Pusateri, have also contributed valuable minutes in the midfield. Red-shirt freshman Morgan Fleming can be a factor at several different positions as well. Newcomer Gabe Latigue, a native of Apex, N.C., will join Elon in the midfield after leading Panther Creek High School to a 2008 Tri-8 4A Conference title. The league player of the year earned NSCAA All-South region accolades following his final season. Senior co-captain Steven Kinney will anchor an experienced defense from his center back position. The two-time first-team all-conference selection has been a starter since his rookie season, and helped Elon to seven shutout perfor-mances in 2008. Kinney also proved a threat on the offensive end, scoring a goal

Supporting the V FoundationElon vs. Clemson • Sept. 16 • 7 p.m. • Rhodes Stadium

The Elon men’s soccer team will host its sixth annual match to benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Re-search. The matches started in 2004 when the Phoe-nix hosted the then-defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels. A silent auction was held to raise money for The V Foundation featuring items

from MLS teams, collegiate programs, NFL teams and The V Foundation to name a few. In 2009, the Phoenix will continue to help raise money for The V Foundation to assist in the fight against cancer when Elon hosts the Clemson Tigers on Wednesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium.

against William & Mary and posting four assists, including two in Elon’s con-ference tournament victory over Wofford. Joining Kinney in the back will be fel-low captain Clint Collins. Collins started all 20 matches during his junior season, notching two assists and collecting second-team All-SoCon accolades. Senior Orry Powers and junior Ben Lunka were major contributors to Elon’s back line last year. Powers started in all 20 matches while Lunka saw action in 17 games. Junior Greg Mader, sophomore Austen King, red-shirt freshman Jahan Threeths and newcomers Nick Butterly and Mark Berlin will also compete for time in the back. The Phoenix will welcome the return of junior Clint Irwin in goal after an in-jury sidelined him for part of the season in 2008. Irwin played and started in eight games last year, recording four shutouts and a 0.78 goals against average. Despite the injury, Irwin earned second-team all-conference honors. He currently ranks fifth all-time at Elon with nine career shutouts. Elon’s lineup also boasts three ad-ditional and capable keepers in red-shirt freshmen Jordan Neuhauser and Chat Ott and rookie Reed Dillard. Neuhauser and Ott had the opportunity to learn from Irwin and graduated first-team All-SoCon honoree Kyle Boerner. Dillard, a native of Dallas, Texas and a three-sport athlete at Plano West, helped the school’s top-ranked soccer and baseball teams to national championships as a senior. The experience of the Phoenix roster will be important as the team faces a difficult schedule in 2009. Elon will meet four teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament, including College Cup participants Wake Forest and North Carolina. Powell continues to stress the importance of challenging his players each and every day to be successful throughout the entire season…including a run through the NCAA Tournament.

The Southern Conference, which begins its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. Elon joined the league in 2003. The SoCon is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic as-sociation. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The SoCon has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Sub-division league. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won three of the last four Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The confer-ence currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and champi-onships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions. The SoCon office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first-class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The SoCon was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern

Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Ala-bama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Geor-gia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competi-tion began in the fall of 1921. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Geor-gia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the North-east Conference where he promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The first SoCon championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tourna-ment remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The SoCon currently declares champi-ons in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wres-tling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

Elon in the Pros Over the past four years, Elon soccer players have experienced success break-ing into the professional ranks. Follow-ing the 2005 season, defender Anthony Catalano became the first Phoenix men’s soccer player to sign a professional con-tract. Catalano inked with the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division. He made his professional debut on Sunday, June 11, 2006 against the Puerto Rico Islanders. Catalano also spent a year with the Richmond Kickers of the USL Second Division in 2008. Elon has since seen two other players play professional soccer. Most recently, forward Aaron Parker signed a contract in April 2009 to compete with the Wilming-ton Hammerheads, a USL Second Division team. Parker made his professional debut against the Charlotte Eagles, playing in the final 10 minutes of a 2-2 tie.

Kiki Willis, the 2005 Southern Con-ference Freshman of the Year, signed a developmental contract with D.C. United of Major League Soccer following the 2006 season.
