Since the start of our Designs for Women line, our aim was to deliver a

full, uncompromising range of products designed just for females, with

I can’t believe that another year has passed, and I am already presenting an expanded 2009 women’s product line, when it feels like just yesterday I was showing off our 2008 bikes and gear.For the last fi ve years, the women’s team has focused on giving female riders what they really want and need by designing

bikes and equipment specifi cally for women and the way they ride. I’m especially excited this year because we’re bringing

more high-end products to the table and diversifying our line so that women have more options.

For starters, the brand new carbon Era FSR is a light, stiff and effi cient high-performance mountain bike fi t for World Cup

racers or any woman who simply wants the best on the trail. And the all-new Ariel is the perfect hybrid—off-road capable,

yet fast-rolling on the road—for any woman who doesn’t want to be limited to the road or trail.

We continue to support some amazingly talented women on the race scene who have had huge successes on the mountain

and road, including our MTB Factory Team racers Rebecca Rusch and Lene Byberg, the Aaron’s Corporate Furnishings

Women’s Pro Cycling Team and our Swiss Designs for Women road racing team. We’ve also expanded our relationship with

the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the fi ght against breast cancer with a renewed commitment to donate a minimum of

$250,000 in 2009.

I spend a lot of time on my bike, and every year on the trails and roads, I see more women just getting out and riding. Gas

prices are high, and the environment is a major concern for everyone, but the bike can be a simple, innovative

and fun solution.

Because it’s active and independent of pedaling forces,

FSR® suspension is free to compress and rebound in

an uninhibited manner at all times, so your tires stay on

The specially tuned FlowControl Brain® allows the Era

a lighter spring that enhances small bump compliance

feature a unique steerer/crown assembly that tapers from

1-1/8” at the top, to an oversized 1-1/2” at the bottom. By

perfectly integrating the fork and oversized bearing, we

not only benefi t from improved steering precision but a

lighter, stiffer and better made carbon system.

*Our Era FSR Expert Carbon frame uses the same ta-

By defi nition, TSI or Total Suspension Integration is a systems approach to design that yields the highest performance full

suspension mountain bikes possible. Simply put, we develop (from scratch) the fork, shock and frame to work together

as a seamless system in order to compliment that bike’s specifi c riding experience. This way, we don’t have to rely on a

generic parts mix that’s designed for any number of different bikes.

Every Specialized women’s road bike features geometry

that’s designed to fi t women’s bodies, including shorter

top tubes & taller head tubes for the perfect fi t & optimal

handling. Frames are offered in sizes down to 44cm.

The S-Works & Pro level Ruby feature our FACT carbon

crank, which supercharges performance because it’s light

(a full 119 grams lighter than a Shimano Dura-Ace crank &

bottom bracket combination) and still surpasses all other

cranks on the market in terms of stiffness-to-weight.

The custom tubing and carbon lay-ups used on our

We wouldn’t have spent countless hours developing our Body Geometry shoes with Dr. Andy Pruitt from

the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine if we didn’t realize the benefi ts behind a perfect fi tting shoe. After

all, your feet are your power transfer. Every watt you put into those pedals should move you forward, not

waste your energy.

In addition to their ergonomic BG features—shown in the illustrations—our shoes are engineered with a

women’s lasted foot form. By narrowing heel width and lowering forefoot volume (the toe box area), we’re

able to contour the unique shape of the female foot more effectively than the standard cycling shoe, which

helps create a more effi cient ride.

THE PROBLEM: Cyclists often experience “hot spots” or numbness in the

forefoot while riding, due to the fact that a snug shoe can lead to the

compression of nerves and arteries in between the metatarsals (long

bones of the forefoot).

THE SOLUTION: The Metatarsal Button in our BG shoes works against this

problem by lifting and separating the metatarsals to eliminate related

compression and discomfort.

THE PROBLEM: Similar to its angulation, the foot’s arch is great for absorbing

shock when walking or running, thanks to its natural fl ex. But unless the

arch is supported while on a bike, it can hinder pedaling effi ciency on the

downstroke.

THE SOLUTION: The footbeds and outsoles of our BG shoes are constructed

with Longitudinal Arch support, truly making every pedal stroke count in

your favor.

THE PROBLEM: Since the foot is naturally canted for walking and running

(with the big toe higher than the little), that same angulation on a bike

can cause a collapse of the foot with every pedal rotation, which not

only degrades effi ciency, but creates knee pressure and strain.

THE SOLUTION: We engineer a Varus Wedge into the outside of our BG

shoes, giving the foot a 1.5mm angle to compensate for its natural tilt.

This creates better alignment of the knee over the foot, boosting

effi ciency and comfort.

A. Female–Contoured SaddlesThough traditional saddles tend to cause soreness and numbness from the excess pressure

put on sensitive nerves and arteries during your ride, our Body Geometry designs help to

eradicate that discomfort through built-in ergonomic details.

After studying pressure scans of female cyclists at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, we

formulated a saddle cutout that functions purely for women and their anatomy. The resulting

shape and beveled foam contours remove padding from the high pressure central area of the

saddle to deliver more comfort and endurance.

No two pairs of sit bones are the same. Skinnier saddles don’t necessarily work best for

smaller riders, wider saddles for larger riders, and so on. Even the difference in sit bone width

when riding in an upright or aero position is signifi cant. There’s simply no cardinal rule for

picking the best sized saddle for your body—meaning the one that will keep you riding longer

in more comfort—besides accurately measuring the distance between your sit bones.

Unless you’ve already found your way to the right saddle size through trial and error, we

always suggest getting fi t to your bike. During a BG FIT session at your local Specialized

dealer, you can have your sit bone width measured to quickly and easily determine the perfect

Numb hands are a common problem for cyclists, and it all stems from compression on the

ulnar nerve (if you’ve ever hit your “funny bone”, then you know the nerve we’re talking

about). That’s precisely why we designed our gloves with Body Geometry soft gel pads

between the heel of your hand and the bar—to spread compressive force from the bike and

reduce hand pressure by 19.5% over standard gloves. All of our gloves also use proportional

sizing for the palm width and fi nger length of women.

A. BG Gel padding insulates the ulnar nerve from pressure between hand and grip to

reduce numbness.

B. For an extra measure of comfort, BG Bar Phat handlebar pad systems (see

www.specialized.com) dampen road vibration & reduce pressure on hands.
