On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the forthcoming 2009 CTLA Annual Conference in Niagara-on-the-Lake, October 1-3, 2009. The theme of this year’s conference is CTLA2009: A Cross-Border Conversation. Each panel and round-table discussion will include both Canadian and U.S. speakers, and will present a comparative (Canada-U.S.) analysis of the laws and legal practices that affect the transportation of people and goods in North America.

The conference venue is Queen’s Landing Inn & Conference Resort, a beautiful waterfront location close to the heart of this historic town, where urban pursuits and rural pleasures coexist very comfortably. Tour the fabled Wine Route, then stroll along the town’s heritage district, with its eclectic collection of shops, museums and historic monuments, unique art galleries and fabulous restaurants. Don’t miss the renowned Shaw Theatre Festival, with a repertoire that ranges from provocative dramas to well-loved musicals. Pamper yourself at the excellent local spa facilities. You’ll come away with second thoughts about life in the city!

The Friday night optional event at Stratus Vineyards, the CTLA Annual Dinner and the Guest Program have been carefully designed to showcase the very best of Niagara’s spectacular wine country, the rich history of this region, farm-to-table cuisine, and local entertainment. We also hope that you will join us for some of our pre- and post-conference activities: golfing at John Daly’s first signature golf course in Canada, a tour of Niagara Falls, a Casino evening, a guided bike tour or horseback trek to local wineries, or a hike through the picturesque Niagara Escarpment (a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve).

Do take a minute to look through the attached conference agenda. For more details, please visit the CTLA2009 website at www.regonline.ca/ctla2009, or drop us a note at [email protected].

To take advantage of the Early Bird registration rate, be sure to sign up by June 30, 2009, using the enclosed registration form, or by following the easy online registration process on the CTLA2009 website. Hotel reservations are due by August 15, 2009, so make your travel plans now to assure yourself of a spot and to enjoy the conference room rate.

I look forward to welcoming you, your family and guests to the charming town of NOTL!

CTLA2009: A Cross-Border ConversationThis year’s continuing legal education program invites delegates to compare and contrast the legal issues and concerns associated with the transportation of people and goods across and on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border. Our speakers include pre-eminent Canadian and U.S. transport lawyers and professional consultants who will analyze the different strategies and styles that come into play in different parts of our two nations.

Who Can Attend? The 2009 CTLA Annual Conference is open to anyone with an interest in transportation law, practice or procedure. This year, in addition to CTLA and TLA members, we extend a special invitation to in-house counsel and other professionals – lawyers and non-lawyers alike – who are active in transportation within Canada and across North America.

Canadian Transport Lawyers Association (CTLA) Since its founding in 1978, through conferences, publications and networking, the Canadian Transport Lawyers Association has kept its members current on new developments in provincial, federal and international law that apply to Canadian, U.S. and cross-border shippers, carriers and freight intermediaries, across all modes of transportation including air, truck, bus, rail and marine. The CTLA provides a unique, collegial forum for the discussion of topical issues and the exchange of ideas among some of North America’s pre-eminent experts in transportation law.

Continuing Legal Education (CLE)Accreditation can be requested for the 2009 CTLA Annual Conference from those Canadian provinces and U.S. states that have mandatory CLE requirements, subject in each case to the rules and regulations of the law society or bar association in question. Certificates of attendance will be available for pick-up on site. If you plan to attend the conference and your home jurisdiction has mandatory CLE requirements, please let us know in advance via email at [email protected].

Hotel Reservations - Queen’s Landing Inn & Conference Resort Queen’s Landing is a stately Georgian-style mansion, overlooking the scenic Niagara River and Lake Ontario, a one minute walk from the town’s main street and the Shaw Festival Theatre. Niagara-on-the-LakeThe Old Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) attracts more than two million visitors every year, with its serene waterfront setting, old world charm and award-wining wineries. Renowned for its fine dining and stunning scenery, it was officially named ‘the prettiest town in Canada’ by Communities in Bloom in 1996.

As the original capital of Upper Canada (now Ontario), NOTL holds a long and distinguished history. Site of the old Neutral Indian village of Onghiara, it was purchased by the British Crown for settlement by Empire Loyalists who fled to Upper Canada at the close of the American Revolution. Some thirty years later, this was the scene of some of the most iconic battles of the War of 1812. Today, as it prepares to celebrate two centuries of peace between Canada and the U.S., NOTL hums with a different kind of traffic, while clinging to its distinctly British heritage. In addition to the historic sites of Fort George, the battlefields of 1812, museums and monuments, it now boasts perhaps the finest collection of impeccably preserved Regency architecture in North America, the much-loved Shaw Theatre Festival, inviting waterfront trails, a unique heritage shopping district, spectacular golf courses, parkland and Zagat-rated restaurants.

Niagara Region Activities and Attractions This is a great opportunity to combine a vacation with your conference attendance. Whether you are an avid wine lover or just enjoy a beautiful country escape with a bit of food and drink, the Niagara wine region beckons. The Niagara peninsula has established itself as a world-class wine region, offering award-winning wines in a relaxed environment. First-time visitors are often astonished at the breathtaking beauty of the region and the gastronomical delights on offer at the region’s many fine restaurants. More than 60 wineries are now located here, starting from the Town of Grimsby and lining a scenic Wine Route through to NOTL. Just 25 minutes away from NOTL, Niagara Falls gives its visitors a unique, up-close experience with one of the natural wonders of the world. This zany, bustling town is one of Canada’s most well-loved tourist attractions, and with the sublime majesty of the falls, gorgeous views, two of Ontario’s largest casinos, the Butterfly Conservatory, wacky wax-works museums, wild boat trips, multimedia activities and fun rides – it truly has something for everyone. Planning to bring your kids? Contact us at [email protected] and we will gladly help you put together a fun filled program!

ShawFestivalTicketsWe have placed a tentative hold on a small number of tickets for the various shows listed in the Calendar of Events, below. Prices vary depending on the particular show and performance, and range from C$60 to C$85. You will be invoiced separately for theatre tickets. Note that our tentative hold is valid for a limited time only, so please notify us of your theatre ticket requests as early as possible by email to [email protected]. Attire Casual wear is appropriate for the educational sessions, but please note that these will take place in air-conditioned conference rooms. For the Thursday night “dine-around” the dress code will depend on your choice of restaurant, but will likely range from casual to business casual. The dress code for both the optional event at Stratus Vineyards on Friday evening, and for the CTLA Annual Dinner – Riverside at Navy Hall on Saturday night is smart casual. We recommend that you bring a sweater or light jacket, and that you wear comfortable walking shoes to both events, as some of the activities will take place outdoors.

Weather Early autumn is a magical time in Southern Ontario, with trees breaking out in brilliant shades of red and gold, offset by the blue of our lakes and rivers. Niagara-on-the-Lake is located in the Great Lakes region; however, its climate is very moderate when compared to other Canadian communities. This is due to the rather unique geographical attributes of this region, which is sheltered from north-westerly winds by the Niagara Escarpment, and warmed by the effect of lakes Erie and Ontario. The weather in early October can best be described as “transitional”, with dry and sunny periods interspersed with light rain. Boat tours around the Niagara River and Niagara Falls generally operate late into the month of October. Daytime highs for this time of year typically range from 8°C to 22°C (46°F to 72°F), with nighttime lows between 1°C and 12°C (34°F to 55°F).

Transportation Queen’s Landing is located approximately 129 km (80 miles) from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), 66 km (41 miles) from Buffalo-Niagara International Airport (BUF), and 90 km (56 miles) from Hamilton-Munro International Airport (YMH). Shuttle service is available through Niagara Airbus. To book please visit their website at www.niagaraairbus.com. Our group booking code is # 426.

Don’t miss these events! Our optional Friday night event will be a Harvest Buffet Dinner, Wine Tasting and Tour at Stratus Vineyards. This upscale winery produces some of Canada’s finest wines, which were served to U.S. President Obama during a recent luncheon in Ottawa. Enjoy wine tastings and hors d’oeuvres in the chic tasting rooms and on the adjoining terrace, with panoramic views of the surrounding vineyard. Experience guided tours and a buffet dinner, with multiple food stations and paired wines. The fee for this event includes all food and beverages.

The CTLA Annual Dinner will take place in the historic setting of Navy Hall, site of Upper Canada's First Parliament (1792) and first Royal Visit, by Edward, Duke of Kent, Queen Victoria’s father and C-in-C of British forces in N. America (1799). Delegates and guests will have full use of the hall and its surrounding grounds, with views across the river to U.S. Fort Niagara, to the sweet jazz stylings of local artiste, Juliet Dunn. This event is included in all member, non-member and guest conference registration fees.
