In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events.

The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretak-ers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all

spectators find creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

be a bison

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion need-ed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time man-agement, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-ath-lete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be reward-ed for a lifetime.

What it means to

“Being a Bison means representing Bucknell in and out of the classroom and working hard as a team toward the common goal of winning a Patriot League Championship.”

— Junior Setter Rachel Rodriguez

Bucknell Bison AthleticsSetting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s • four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions report-ing federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identi-cal to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of • the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in • 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competi-tion season. Among all BU student-athletes, 238 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the • spring of 2009.

In addition to the 117 • ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 276 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.

With three more Patriot League championships in 2008-09, Bucknell has • now earned 73 crowns in 19 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 100 conference players of the year, 83 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 476 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the • league’s all-sports champion, 15 times in the 19-year history of the affiliation, including 11 of the last 12 years. Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State • and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence • is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Aca-demic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facil-ity’s layout.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsA National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residen-tial learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including prac-tice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Season Preview

After a one-year hiatus from the Patri-ot League Tournament in 2007, Bucknell reclaimed a spot among the league’s top four teams last season, showing off the power of a youthful team. The bulk of that squad returns in 2009 with an added year of experience, a taste for the championship and a support group of talented newcomers. With that combina-tion, the Bison are poised for their 18th trip to the Patriot League’s year-ending tour-nament and are gunning for an-other title.

“Our expectation is nothing less than competing for a championship this year,” said Cindy Opalski, who begins her 20th season as the head coach for Bucknell. “It’s one thing to say you want to compete for a championship. It’s another thing to get in the gym everyday and have that determination, persis-tence and work ethic to really compete for a champi-onship. I see good signs of that in the preseason.”

Bucknell certainly has the tools to compete in the newest campaign. Despite graduating the school’s all-time assists leader in Shannon Pitsch, the team has some solid replacements in Allison Gittings, a senior co-captain, and junior Rachel Rodriguez.

“We have really great experience and talent in our setters group. Allison and Rachel are in re-ally good physical condition,” Opalski explained. “They’ve worked hard over the summer, and they’re very focused. They know that the more consistent they are, the better our hitting percentage is going to be. I’m really pleased right now with where they are developmentally and their potential to improve.”

At the net, the Bison return the core of their at-tack. Junior Kaitlin Segal, who led the team in kills and was named Second Team All-Patriot League last year, will be joined by sophomore Katie Baum-garten and junior Heidi Kamp, the team’s leader in blocks and hitting percentage in 2008. The trio is expected to bring a renewed sense of intensity to Davis Gym.

“Kaitlin, who has been our most consistent player, has come back in really strong physical condition, and I think both she and Katie are much more mature and mentally tougher,” Opalski said of the outside hitters. “Heidi Kamp has really become much more aggressive and determined on the front line.”

Opalski also anticipates Kyleigh McAhren and Anne Ellenberger to team up to create a formidable duo on the front line. Expect McAhren to switch from middle hitter, a position she occupied through much of her freshman campaign, to the more natural right and left sides. Both she and Ellenberger finished their first season in the Orange and Blue among the team’s top three in total blocks.

“With the people we have acquired in this year’s recruiting class, we’re going to move Kyleigh to a position where she can be much more effec-tive. Along with Anne Ellenberger, both have their strengths. Anne can be a dominant force at the net because of her height, and Kyleigh is a really smart hitter.”

At libero, the Bison have a trio of sophomores in Emily Sawanobori, Lindsay Regruto and Kelsey Guardia, providing a wealth of options at the

position. “Defensively, I think Emily, especially, is very determined to earn a start-

ing spot, and we hope that both Lindsay and Kelsey will give us the depth and consistency in that position we’ll need to be successful.”

Rounding out the crew of returning players is senior co-captain Lindsay Smith. The right side/middle hitter is coming off shoulder surgery last winter, but the Bison will rely on much more than just Smith’s arm to move them toward success.

“Someone who has been really supportive and a really good stabilizer for us has been Lindsay Smith. Beyond her volleyball, her leadership and motivational skills have really been evident this preseason.”

Bucknell’s roster is completed with six freshmen who bring their own success from high school and club competition. The incoming class, made up of Kebah Edoho, Arden Fuller, Ragin Jackson, Jackie Landes, Kelsey Sauer and Kat Tauscher, boasts a number of all-district selections as well as academic honors. Upon announcing the newest Bison, Opalski identified them as one of Bucknell volleyball’s strongest recruiting classes both on and off the court.

“The good news is this entire freshman class has had experience on the national level playing in club tournaments, and has played against some of the best volleyball players in their age group in the coun-try,” Opalski said of the newcomers. “I’m pleasantly surprised with the talent and the determination in this freshman class. In our competitive scrimmages, they’re really extending and pushing the upperclassmen. There are a lot of good things happening.”

The Bison will aim for consistent contributions all the way down the bench as they go for their first league title since 2000. To get there, they will have to face the usual league foes. Following a series of early-season tournaments that includes the Bucknell Invitational Sept. 18-19, Bucknell will open its Patriot League schedule with a home contest against Army, which placed sec-ond in the league a year ago. The team will also have to get through the perennial favorite American, which comes to Lewisburg in the final regular-season match on Nov.14. The schedule culminates Nov. 20-21 with the Patriot League Tournament to be held at the site of the highest seed. Bucknell hopes that site will be Davis Gym.

“Making it to the final four (of the Patriot League last year) with such a young team gave us a taste of what it’s like to play for a championship. And I believe that our vision is one of sitting in our locker room having the pregame talk at the conference championship, not taking a bus ride anywhere.”

◊ Quoting the Bison ◊

Emily SawanoboriA second-year student perspec t ive “My first season on the team was a huge growth year for us and it’s great to be back on a team with so much talent and heart. The feeling of family and passion for the game that brings us together is something I’ve never experienced anywhere else, and that unity is going to bring us an amazing season.”

Kaitlin SegalOn moving to Buck nel l f rom the West Coast“I came into Bucknell extremely nervous, 3,000 miles away from home and very shy, but was immediately welcomed into the Bucknell family. The volleyball girls welcomed all of us with open arms and the freshmen orientation was so much fun, allowing me no time to even think about feeling homesick.”

Lindsay SmithOn l i fe at Buck nel l“At Bucknell University, there are so many things to get involved with and it’s great that Bucknell has such a balance between student and athlete. You can really get in-volved in all the extracurriculars on campus, but you can also do athletics at the same time, and all the professors at Bucknell are really supportive of that balance.”

Coach Profiles

The resurgence of Bucknell’s volleyball program can be traced directly to Cindy Opalski’s arrival in 1990. Granted the turnaround didn’t come overnight, but after

a couple of years of growing pains and some energetic recruiting efforts, Opalski has transformed the Bison volleyball program into one of the top programs in the East. Bucknell made NCAA Tournament appearances in both 1998 and 2000 and has averaged more than 16 victories over the last 15 seasons.

Under Opalski the Bison were recognized as the most improved team in the nation by Volleyball Monthly in 1993; recorded the best record in school history in 1995 at 26-7; won the first-ever Patriot League automatic bid to the 1998 NCAA Tournament; and in 2003 posted a school-record 11 Patriot League wins en route to a second-place finish. Bucknell has won four of the last 14 Patriot League regular season titles under Opalski, who has been named the Patriot League Coach of the Year in 1995, 2000 and 2003. The Bison have qualified for the PL Tournament in 18 of 20 years in the league.

Opalski won her 300th career match in 2004, and with 371 career victories is the second-winningest active volleyball coach in the Patriot League. In 2006, Opalski won her 250th match as coach of the Bison.

Now in her 23rd season as a collegiate head coach, Opalski wrote essentially the same script at Clarion University. In her four years there (1986-1989), Opalski led Clarion to a record of 92-48 and the school’s first-ever conference title in 1988. She was selected as the American Volleyball

Coaches Association Coach of the Year in the Atlantic Region, and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year during her tenure.

Opalski graduated from Southern Connecticut State in 1977 and earned a Master of Science degree from that school in 1984. A savvy outside hitter for the Owls, she played in two AIAW national tournaments and captained the squad in her senior year. From 1979 through 1985 as head coach at Maloney High School in her native Meriden, Conn., Opalski led that school to two state titles. Her resume there included six undefeated regular seasons and an eye-popping overall record of 147-11. Opalski’s success in volleyball has been documented by her 2006 induction as a player to the F.T. Maloney High School Hall of Fame and as a coach in the Connecticut Scholastic Women’s Volleyball Hall of Fame soon afterwards.

Opalski worked with the U.S. Volleyball Junior Olympic Program in the 1980s, coaching the Connecticut team at numerous national qualifiers. For five years she coached and trained some of the top players that have ever come out of the Nutmeg State as well as several teams that qualified for the USVBA National tournament.

Director of Athletics & Recreation, John P. Hardt, and Associate Director of Athletics and former vol-leyball coach, Terrie Grieb, present Opalski with a volleyball commemorating her 350th career win.

Anna Allison enters her fifth season as a member of the Bison volleyball coaching staff this fall. A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a member of a prominent volleyball family, Allison is a 2004 graduate of Oral Roberts University, where she was one of the top setters in Golden Eagles’ history. In 2006, she helped guide former Bucknell setter Shannon Pitsch to

a school single-season record total in assists, which ranked first in the Patriot League.Allison was a First Team All-Mid Continent Conference selection three times and was named Setter of the Year in 2000 and 2002. As a senior in

2002 she shattered the Oral Roberts career assists record as well as the Mid-Con career service aces record. Oral Roberts won four straight league titles and played in four NCAA Tournaments during her playing days. A two-time team captain, Allison was also an outstanding student and earned Scholar-Athlete honors while successfully completing degrees in advertising and marketing communications.

Inga Kurgonaite, a 2008 graduate of Lock Haven and a former All-America selection, enters her second season as the graduate assistant volleyball coach with the Bison volleyball program. As a Third Team All-America choice in 2006, Kurgonaite led Lock Haven to three straight NCAA Elite Eight appear-

ances (2004-2006), three NCAA Atlantic Region championships (2004-2006) and a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) titles (2004, 2006). A four-time All-Atlantic Region selection, she ended her career with the Lady Eagles third on the program’s kills list (1,459), third in hitting percentage (.303) and fourth in blocks (426). She piled up a team-high 359 kills as a senior and registered at least 20 kills in a match four times. Named to the All-PSAC Team four times, Kurgonaite was an Honorable Mention All-America choice as a sophomore when she tallied 89 digs and 106 blocks. A native of Kaunas, Lithuania, Kurgonaite helped Lock Haven pace the NCAA in blocks per game in 2004 (3.83 bpg) and 2006 (3.06 bpg), and in hitting percentage in 2006 (.317). A right-side hitter during her playing career, Kurgonaite was a 2007 NCAA Leadership Conference participant and was the co-president of the Lock Haven Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a senior in 2007-08. “Inga brings a lot to the table in terms of her experience as a player and her success on both the national and international levels,” said Opalski when Kurgonaite joined the staff. “She has really taken the initiative to jump in and immediately impact the offensive and defensive production of our big people.”

A lifelong student of the sport of volleyball, Allison’s enthusiasm and commitment to the game was influenced by her father, Antonio Carlos Moreno, who played for the Brazilian national team for 16 years and participated in four Olympic Games. Anna’s twin brother, Carlos, was an All-America setter who earned AVCA Player of the Year honors while leading BYU to the 2004 NCAA men’s national championship.

In 2003-04 Allison served as graduate assistant coach at Oral Roberts, where she worked closely with the Golden Eagles’ setters and assisted in scouting and recruiting. Throughout her undergraduate career she coached the ORU Club team, featuring players aged 12 to 18, as well as the 16-18 Tulsa Volleyball Club. In her native Brazil, Allison was a regular coach at the S.P. Volleyball Camp and has worked as director, recruiting manager and coach with the Moreno Corp. Over the summers, she has served on the staff of the Gold Medal Square Camp as well as the Bentley College Camp.

“Our team and future recruiting classes will clearly benefit from Anna’s vast international experience and technical knowledge of the game,” said Opalski at the time of Allison’s hiring. “Her technical knowledge will benefit our setters and enhance our offensive production. I believe that she is one of the best young coaches in the country.”

Athletics Mission statementThe Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher educa-

tion, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s

high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, develop-ment, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

The relocation of the Bison men’s and women’s basketball teams to Sojka Pavilion left Davis Gym as the premier volleyball and wrestling facility. The venerable 1,000-seat arena was dedicated on June 13, 1938 and has hosted Bison athletic events for more than 70 years. The Davis Gym hardwood was recently refinished and painted with volleyball boundaries as its primary color scheme. The team’s spacious locker room and coaches offices are located just off the main playing floor. A new score-board was added in 2007, as well.

Patriot League/Community

In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors champion-ships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport confer-ence in 1990 and includes American,

Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Gradua-tion Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after post-ing academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competi-tive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

During the 2008-09 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

• 14 student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors

• 61 student-athletes were recognized as ESPN The Magazine/Co-SIDA Academic All-District recipients, with 45 on the First Team.

• Bucknell won its 15th overall and women’s Patriot League Presi-dents’ Cup trophy, while Army won the men’s trophy for the first time since 2005.

The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 15 times in its 19-year existence, including 11 of the last 12 years.

The Presidents’ Cup is awarded an-nually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings.

Bison in the community Bison volleyball was active in the community throughout 2008. Some of the team’s efforts included hosting Empowering Everyone’s Kids (EEK) Night, encouraging children to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle and to increase the community’s interest in volleyball. Bucknell also took part in the nation-wide Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. As the Bison took on Patriot League foe American dur-ing Dig Pink Night, they promoted awareness of the disease and helped to raise money for breast cancer research. Players wore pink jerseys, and game-used pink volleyballs were raffled following the match. Bucknell will continue its community outreach efforts in 2009, hosting the annual EEK Night and Dig Pink campaign as well as a Rock the House night to encourage campus and community involv-ment.

Current players listed in bold Italics denote Patriot League record

◊ Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame ◊KATIE STEELE ’96 is the only Bison volleyball player to be named to the All-Patriot League team four times. She was a two-year captain and graduated as the school record-holder in hitting percentage, aces and

blocks. Most important, Steele, who was also a Patriot League Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-District selection, is credited for helping turn a struggling program into a league power. Af-ter compiling a 45-186 record from 1985-92, Bucknell went 63-35 in Steele’s sophomore, ju-nior and senior years. The Bison were the most improved team in the country in 1993, and by Steele’s senior year team finished 26-7 and won its first Patriot League regular-season title with a 6-0 record. She entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2007.

MELISSA WHARTON ’98 graduated with 10 school records and is considered one of the best players in program history. She is still

the only Bison player to hit .400 in a season, and she did so three times. Wharton recorded a Bucknell and Patriot League-record .445 hitting percentage in 1995 (second-best in the nation that year), and she followed it up by hitting .410 in 1996 and .411 as a senior in 1997. She owns three of the top four single-season hitting percentages in Patriot League history, while her .400 career average is also the school and league record. Wharton’s 1,377 career kills was the school record for 10 years until being surpassed in 2007. She is also the Bucknell and Patriot League career leader in blocks with 631. Wharton was a three-time First Team All-Patriot League selection and earned the Christy Mathewson Award as the top senior athlete in her class. She will enter the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

The Bucknell University Depart-ment of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excel-lence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 15 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 19 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 117 Academic All-Americans in 39 years and 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 19 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Lan-gone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Buck-nell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its grow-ing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of cam-pus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the stu-dent body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Ath-letics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, mod-ern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for var-sity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell gradu-ate who, along with his wife, Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The brand new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the stan-dard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recre-ation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memo-rial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields for softball, and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Sta-dium, including the new Phase III portion of the West Fields Project.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where more than 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that

make a difference and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher educa-tion.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University.

The Plan comprises five strategies:

Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;

Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical

responsibility;Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its

forms within a civil and supportive environment of open ex-change to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world;

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources nec-essary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future.

The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, hav-ing previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are de-termined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see
