NCAA Division II Playoff s

BLOOMSBURG --Jesse Cooper’s 62-yard interception return broke a 14-14 tie and lifted Bloomsburg University past West Chester University 28-21 in an NCAA Division II second round playoff game. With the score tied at 14-all early in the fourth period, Cooper stepped in front of a Joe Wright pass and ran untouched into the end zone putting the Huskies in front for good. Bloomsburg opened the game’s scoring on its fi rst drive of the game marching 70 yards in 11 plays with Stefan Adams going the fi nal seven yards for the score. West Chester though answered back on its next drive with Wright pushing his way in for a score on a fourth and goal play from the one-yard line. In the second period, both teams had turnovers stop potential scoring drives. Th e Huskies were driving for a go-ahead score when quarterback Dan Latorre was sacked and fumbled the ball with the Golden Rams recovering at their own 18 yard line. Later, West Chester was in Bloomsburg territory when it too fumbled with the Huskies recovering. Bloomsburg fi nally took the lead in the third period when Adams went in from three yards out. However, the Golden Rams needed just six plays to tie the game with Jackson Fagan scoring on a six-yard run with 5:12 left in the third. In the fourth period the Golden Rams started a drive at their own fi ve yard line and had moved down to the Bloomsburg 47. On a third and six play, Wright went back to throw, but Cooper came up and intercepted the pass on the run and went 62-yards for the score. Following a three-out from West Chester, the Huskies marked 77 yards in 11 plays with Latorre hitting Kyle Ream, who was double-covered, with a 28-yard scoring pass for a 28-14 lead. Th e drive ate up nearly six and a half minutes of time leaving the Golden Rams just 3:36 to work with. West Chester, though, wasted little time and needed just 1:37 to go 56 yards with Wright hitting Mike Washington with an 18-yard touchdown pass and making it a one-score game. Bloomsburg recovered the on-side kick attempt and when Latorre hit Ream with a 32-yard completion on a third down play the win was sealed. Latorre fi nished 11 of 15 for 129 yards and one score, while Wright was 20-39 for 262 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

THE GRADUATE: QB Dan Latorre, now in his fourth year as the starter, graduated as a

triple major in the spring and is now in grad school. One of the best players to ever wear a

Husky uniform, Latorre, who was named fi rst team All-PSAC East last year, heads into the

2009 season third all-time in school history in both yards passing and touchdowns and is the

all-time leader in rushing yards by a quarterback.

MR. EVERYTHING:

Latorre is featured in the

latest edition of Bloomsburg: Th e University Magazine.

Th e story, written by Husky

play-by-play commentator

Jim Doyle, details Latorre’s

GOING FOR A GRAND: Latorre just doesn’t rely on his arm to lead the Huskies down the

currently qualify for PSAC individual statistics because he has not played in 75 percent of the Huskies games, but if he did, he would rank fi rst

in rushing yards, fi rst in scoring (12.0 points per game) and second in all-purpose yards (122.0 per game).

With his 165-yard performance at East Stroudsburg, Price entered BU’s top-10 in career rushing yards and currently has 1,942. Price passed

Jerry Marks (1988-91), who had 1,694 yards in his career with the Huskies. Josh Heck (2003-07) is ninth all-time with 2,115 rushing yards.

Last year, Price ran for 1,279 yards and seven touchdowns, winning PSAC East Rookie of the Year and receiving fi rst team All-PSAC East

honors.

KENNY!: With his 121-yard eff ort last week against Shippensburg, Kenny Domzalski registered his fourth career 100-yard rushing game. He

posted three during his freshman year, including a 172-yard eff ort in his very fi rst game against Ashland.

With his game-high 86 yards in the win over Mercyhurst, Domzalski went over 1,000 rushing yards in his

career. In his freshman year of 2008, he ran for 878 yards, good for second on the team. So far this season,

Domzalski is second on the Huskies with 558 yards on 109 carries. He now has 1,436 career rushing yards, 506

behind Price for 10th in BU history.

WEARING ‘EM DOWN: Th e Huskies have relied on successful 4th quarter running

performances to wear down opponents and help gain victories over Ashland, Cal,

Kutztown, C.W. Post and most recently, East Stroudsburg. Against the Warriors, BU

ran a total of 15 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns from Price and Domzalski.

BU ROLLIN’: Th e Huskies off ense has improved dramatically over the last six games.

Heading into the matchup against Kutztown, BU was averaging 14.7 points, 122.3

rushing yards and 267.7 total yards per game, each no better than 13th-ranked in the

PSAC. In the six weeks since, the Huskies have averaged 31.0 points, 207.2 rushing

yards and 352.7 total yards per contest.

SPREADING IT OUT: Th e Huskies have relied on several players to catch passes

during the 2009 season. BU’s 112 total completions have been spread out among 15

diff erent receivers: seven wide receivers, fi ve running backs and three tight ends. Against Millersville, nine

diff erent players caught passes for the Huskies.

GOING DEEP: Th e Huskies have tried several deep passes each game in 2009, connecting on six passes of over

40 yards. Junior WR Chris Tressler has been the main benefi ciary of those deep balls, recording a 47-yarder

against Cal, a 41-yarder against Meryhurst, another 47-yard pass against Kutztown and a 41-yarder last week against Shippensaburg. Senior

WR Jordan Weisman has been on the receiving end of the other two 40-plus plays, catching a 40-yarder in the opener against Ashland and a

56-yarder against Kutztown.

WEABER GRILLS OPPONENTS: So far in 2009, junior TE Ben Weaber has a career-high 23 catches for 280 yards. Last week against

Shippensburg, Weaber made an incredible leaping 30-yard reception, falling back as he caught it. Against East Stroudsburg, Weaber recorded a

career-high six receptions for 69 yards. Many of his catches included stiff arming defenders and breaking tackles. Earlier in the season, Weaber

made a nice, one-handed grab against Millersville right after snatching a sidearm shovel pass from a scrambling Latorre. For his career, Weaber

has 45 receptions for 541 yards and a touchdown.

HOLDING THE LEAD: Th e fi eld goal by East Stroudsburg in the fi rst quarter three weeks ago marked the fi rst time all year that the Huskies

had trailed in a game. BU would tie the game 6:36 later when Jon Koenig connected on a fi eld goal of his own to tie the game at 3-3. Another

ESU fi eld goal in the second quarter put the Huskies down for just the second time, but would go ahead for good when Latorre found Cory

Stiger for a 29-yard touchdown. In last week’s loss to Shippensburg, the Huskies held the lead until the Red Raiders scored the go-ahead

touchdown and point-after with 46 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. In all, Bloomsburg has trailed for just eight minutes and 11

seconds this season.

NATIONALLY RANKED DEFENSE: Th e Huskies defense has dominated opponents this season, giving up just 11.9 points per game, which

ranks fi rst in the PSAC and is second in all of Division II. BU is also near the top nationally in total yards allowed (274.9 - 22nd in DII; third in

PSAC), rushing yards allowed (100.3 - 24th in DII; third in PSAC), redzone defense (68.0% - tied for 23rd in DII; second in PSAC) and fourth

down defense (15.8% - fi fth in DII; fi rst in PSAC).

In addition, the BU defense averages 3.1 sacks per game (tied for 13th in DII), 7.67 tackles-for-loss per game (tied for 33th in DII), and forces

opposing quarterbacks to post a pass effi ciency rating of just 107.71 (269h in DII).

1ST HALF DOMINANCE: A touchdown by C.W. Post in the fi rst quarter fi ve weeks ago was the fi rst

given up in the fi rst half by Bloomsburg all season. Th e week before at Kutztown, the Golden Bears

fi eld goal in the second quarter was the fi rst points given up by the Huskies in the fi rst half of any game

this year.

KEEPIN’ IT LOW: Th e Huskies have kept opposing off enses at bay, allowing an average of just

11.9 points per game. What is even more impressive is the amount of points BU’s opponents have

scored against other teams. C.W. Post, which is averaging 29.6 points per game against its eight other

opponents, scored only 14 against the Huskies. Cal, which managed only 10 points against BU, has

averaged 38.1 points in other games, including 44 last week against Slippery Rock.

Against the Eagles, Smith registered 11 tackles, including fi ve solo, and a half-sack. He led

keyed a goal line stand in the second quarter and helped lead a defense that allowed just 261

yards to one of the nation’s top ranked off enses. Against Mercyhurst, Smith had another

11-tackle game and had his fi rst career interception, which was returned 15 yards to set up

a late 1st half score. Two weeks ago against the Pioneers, Smith recorded a career-high 19

tackles, a sack and a forced

fumble to win the award for the

third time this season. Last week

against Shippensburg, Smith

collected 14 tackles, his second

highest output of the season,

and one tackle-for-loss.

THE ‘BACKERS: Smith isn’t the only linebacker making plays for the Huskies. Junior Mike

Varanavage topped all tacklers against Cal with 10 and had 11 stops against C.W. Post. Against

Shippensburg he had nine tackles and 2.5 tackles-for-loss, including the fi rst sack of his career.

He is second on the team and 10th in the PSAC with 72 tackles (8.0 pg) this year, recording at

least seven in eight of the Huskies eight games. Varanavage also knocked down the Vulcans

Hail Mary pass in the closing seconds to seal a 17-10 victory.

Junior Th omas McFarland is third on the Huskies in tackles with 58, including a team-leading

10 against Cheyney and 11 against Shippensburg. He also recorded six with 3.0 tackles-for-loss

and a sack against East Stroudsburg and eight with one tackle-for-loss against Mercyhurst.

Redshirt freshmen Ryan Feldman and Jarrett Pidgeon have also seen action in recent weeks,

each posting career-highs in tackles against Millersville (Feldman with fi ve, Pidgeon with four).

Feldman also had a key forced fumble in the third quarter against East Stroudsburg that was

recovered by the Huskies.

DOMINATING D-LINE: Senior Justin Presley is fourth in the PSAC and is tied for 25th in

Division II with seven sacks (0.78 pg) and his 12.5 tackles-for-loss (1.39 pg) is tied for third in

the conference. Presley has teamed with fellow senior Alphonso Nathan and juniors Dave

Huot and Marcus Zimmerman to provide the defense with a constant pass rush and tackles

behind the line of scrimmage. Th at trio has combined for 21.0 tackles-for-loss and 11.0 sacks

this season.

Junior Todd Givler and

sophomores Kenny Orlando

and John Pettine have also been

threats to opposing off enses,

combining for 43 tackles, 8.5

tackles-for-loss, 4.5 sacks and

two pass breakups so far in 2009.

THE DBs: Th e BU defensive backs have helped the Huskies limit opponents to just 174.6

passing yards per game. Sophomore Oscar Rivera leads all Husky defensive backs and is

fourth on the team with 53 tackles from his cornerback spot, including 3.0 tackles-for-loss.

Rivera also has an interception and is tied for second in the PSAC with nine pass breakups,

including four against Shippensburg. Junior Alex Landis has recorded 39 tackles and has an

interception, two forced fumbles and six pass breakups this year.

Senior Jesse Cooper has been rarely tested this year, but has turned in some key defensive

plays. He recorded a pass breakup on a key third down and returned a fumble 29 yards in the

JUST FOR KICKS: After going 3-for-3 on extra points against Shippensburg, senior Jon Koenig extended his streak of consecutive made point-after kicks to 89. His streak started against Cheyney in 2007 and extended through 2008 when he connected on 54-of-54 kicks.

Koenig established a new career-long against Kutztown with a 50-yard fi eld goal. Th e kick came at the 11:17 mark of the 4th quarter and put the Huskies up 24-6. For the season he is 5-for-8 on fi eld goals of 40-plus yards this year, including a 49-yarder against East Stroudsburg and a 45-yarder last week against Shippensburg.

In the fi rst week of October, Koenig was honored as one of 13 recipients of the Fred Mitchell Award for the month of September. Th e award recognizes NCAA Division II and Division III place kickers for excellence on the football fi eld and in the community.

KOENIG CLIMBING THE LIST: After his three extra points against the Red Raiders, Koenig moved into second place all-time in PSAC history in career PATs made with 171. He entered his fi nal season with 146, 33 behind all-time leader Alex Walsh (179) of West Chester. Koenig now sits eight behind West Chester’s Alex Walsh, who fi nished his career with 179.

With his two fi eld goals against Shippensburg, Koenig is now tied with Bill Beall (1992-95) and Mark Weiss (1988-91) for the most fi eld goals made in BU history with 29. With nine fi eld goals this season he is tied for second all-time in a single season with Weiss, who also had nine in 1989. Chris Mingrone had 10 in 1986. Koenig also has the school record for most 40-plus yard fi eld goals in a season with fi ve and in a career with eight.

THE FRESHMEN: Kicker Jared Shannon has been one of a few true freshman getting playing time for the Huskies in 2009. He handles BU’s kickoff s and the Huskies rank fi rst in the PSAC in kickoff average at 62.5 yards, and Shannon has a PSAC-high seven touchbacks. In other words, he routinely makes the returner fi eld the kick around their own seven-yard line. Given additional duties against C.W. Post, Shannon scored the fi rst points of his career, going 4-for-4 on extra points.

In addition to his return duties, TB Brandon Real saw his fi rst collegiate action earlier this year against Cal, carrying the ball eight times for 19 yards, including a 12-yard run on the Huskies fi rst scoring drive early in the 2nd quarter. Real has 18 carries for 46 yards on the year. WR Kyle Fisher has played in four games this year for BU, making his mark on special teams. Fisher has four tackles this season, including two against Cal on kick coverage, and returned a kickoff 33 yards against Kutztown. Fisher saw his fi rst action on off ense against Cheyney, catching a swing pass for nine yards and losing one yard on a reverse.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: Bloomsburg has now won at least eight games for the 17th time in school history, covering 112 seasons, and has done it for the 11th time under Danny Hale.

Th e Huskies are currently enjoying the fourth best defensive start to a year since 1971, allowing only 107 points so far. Th e three best seasons are 1997 with 90; 2005 with 95; and 1985 with 103.

Th e Huskies have not won at West Chester since a 35-7 victory in 2000, following wins there under Hale in 1994 and 1996. Prior to his tenure at Bloomsburg, the only two wins the Huskies had ever had on the road over the Golden Rams were in 1978 and 1984.

A FAMILY AFFAIR: Huskies sophomore FB Matt Cox comes from a family of fullbacks. His father, Lawrence, played at Temple from 1979-82; his older brother Mike played collegiately at Georgia Tech from 2004-07 and is currently in his second year with the Kansas City Chiefs; and younger brother Lucas is a junior at Georgia Tech.

Coincidentally, current BU assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, Paul Darragh, began his playing career at Temple during

Lawrence’s fi nal year.

2009. Hale also spent fi ve years as head coach at West Chester

University.

At Bloomsburg, Hale has posted a career record of 144-47-1

(.753) and holds the school record for most coaching victories.

Overall in 21 years as a head coach he has a mark of 184-60-1

(.753) and is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in NCAA

Division II in winning percentage. In his 16 seasons as head

coach at Bloomsburg he has led the Huskies to 10 outright or

shared Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern

Division titles and six NCAA post-season playoff berths. From 2000 to 2009 the

Huskies are also one of the most successful NCAA Division II programs with a

combined record of 92-23 (.800).

In 2008 the Huskies started the season winning the fi rst nine games of

the year, including wins over nationally-ranked Ashland and California (Pa).

Bloomsburg earned a bid to the NCAA Division II playoff s for the sixth time

overall, and fi fth time this decade, reaching the NCAA Region One fi nals.

In 2006, the Huskies posted a mark of 12-2 and won the PSAC Eastern Division

title, while also capturing the NCAA Northeast Regional title and advancing to

the NCAA Division II national semi-fi nals. Hale was named the PSAC East Coach

PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year honors and the AFCA District One

Coach of the Year award.

Th e Huskies have reached the NCAA playoff s in 1996, 2000 and 2001

NCAA championship game, eventually losing in the title contest. Th e team

reached the fi nals after rallying from a 19-point defi cit against UC-Davis in the

national semi-fi nals to post a 58-48 win. Hale earned the American Football

Coaches Association Division II National Coach of the Year following the season.

At West Chester Hale posted a mark of 40-13 and won three PSAC East

titles and advanced to the NCAA playoff s in 1988.

Prior to West Chester, Hale was an off ensive line and defensive coordinator

at Colgate from 1981 to 1983. Prior to Colgate, Hale was the off ensive line coach

at Bucknell from 1975-80 and was defensive coordinator/linebacker coach at

Vermont in 1974.

Hale is a graduate of West Chester, earning his bachelor’s and master’s

degrees in Health and Physical Education in 1968 and 1973. He was an all-

conference pick at West Chester and earned the team’s most valuable player in

the 1967 State Championship game, while also lettering three times for the track

and fi eld team. He is a member of the West Chester Football Hall of Fame and the

Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

In 1968 Hale signed with the Pottstown Firebirds, the semi professional

August 27, 2009

BLOOMSBURG-Senior running back Stefan Adams ran for 104

yards, including a key 46-yard run in the fourth quarter, as Blooms-

burg University defeated Ashland 10-7 in a battle between two na-

tionally ranked football teams on Th ursday night at Redman Stadium.

Th e 13th-ranked Huskies (1-0) got on the board fi rst with a

28-yard fi eld goal by senior Jon Koenig at the 11:11 mark in the fi rst

quarter. Th e kick came after a nine-play, 29-yard drive that was set up

by a 42 yard kickoff return by senior cornerback Jesse Cooper.

After 15th-ranked Ashland’s (0-1) fi rst drive stalled at the

Bloomsburg 34, the Eagles tried some trickery when punter Derek

Reidel’s fourth-down pass was intercepted by sophomore cornerback

Oscar Rivera. Th e Huskies then started an eight-play, 85-yard drive

that ended when senior quarterback Dan Latorre bolted into the

endzone from eight yards out to put Bloomsburg up 10-0.

Th e Huskies defense controlled Ashland for most of the game,

forcing two fumbles, two punts and stopping the Eagles four times on

fourth down plays through nearly three quarters of play. Seniors Jus-

tin Presley and Anthony Smith led a Bloomsburg goal line stand late

in the second quarter, coming up with three stops inside the Husky

one yard line.

Th e Eagles closed the Bloomsburg advantage to three late in the

third when Carlin Isles scored from 50 yards out to make the score

10-7. However, the Husky defense stifl ed Ashland’s fourth quarter

drives, registering three sacks and forcing Billy Cundiff into 4-of-11

passing for just 24 yards.

Smith led Bloomsburg with 11 tackles while Presley recorded

eight, including three sacks. Smith, senior Alphonso Nathan, and

juniors Marcus Zimmerman and Todd Givler were also able to get

to Cundiff , combining for three sacks.

Latorre fi nished the game 16-of-28 for 158 yards, while rushing

for an additional 18 yards on eight carries. Four of Latorre’s runs went

for key Bloomsburg fi rst downs. Senior Jordan Weisman and sopho-

more Branden Wright each caught four passes for the Huskies.

October 10, 2009

EAST STROUDSBURG-- Tailback Derrick Price carried 23 times for 165

yards and one score to lead the fi fth-ranked Bloomsburg University Huskies to

a 27-13 win over East Stroudsburg in a PSAC Eastern Division matchup.

East Stroudsburg jumped in front on its second possession of the game

when it took over in Bloomsburg territory at the 49-yard line and quickly

moved downfi eld on a 35-yard pass from quarterback Matt Marshall to Ed

Kiser before the drive stalled at the Huskies eight yard line. From there Drew

Reinhard connected on a 26-yard fi eld goal for a 3-0 lead for the Warriors.

Th e Huskies responded on their second drive going 57-yards in 13 plays

and getting a 26-yard fi eld goal from Jon Koenig. Bloomsburg had the ball

inside the 10-yard line, but a penalty and a couple of incomplete passes forced

the Huskies to settle for three points.

Th e Warriors went back on top 6-3 in the second quarter with drive set

up by an interception of Huskies quarterback Dan Latorre. ESU drove inside

the Huskies 20-yard line, but a third down sack of Marshall by Bloomsburg’s

Th omas McFarland forced the Warriors to settle for a 40-yard fi eld goal by

Reinhard.

Bloomsburg answered right back on its ensuing drive needing just three

plays to go 67 yards. Kenny Domzalski started the drive with a 38-yard run

and Latorre fi nished it with a 29-yard scoring pass to Cory Stiger making it

10-6.

Bloomsburg made it 13-6 on the opening drive of the third period driv-

ing from its own 31 to the Warrior 32-yard line. However, the drive stalled

and Koenig hit a 49-yard fi eld goal to extend BU’s lead. On the kickoff , ESU’s

Jeff Giglio fumbled with Ryan Sanders recovering for Bloomsburg at the East

Stroudsburg 39-yard line. Th ree plays later Price ran 27-yards for a score mak-

ing it 20-6 with 10:20 left in the third.

East Stroudsburg got the score back on its next series marching 80-yards

in eight plays with Marshall throwing a 27-yard scoring pass to Sam Shuman

making it 20-13 midway through the third.

In the fourth quarter the Huskies and Warriors traded punts before

the Huskies were able to add the game-clinching score. After Bloomsburg got

pinned back at its own two-yard following a punt, Price broke off a yard of

eight yards followed by a 59-yard run down the Warrior 31-yard line. Domzal-

ski then followed with a three-yard gain followed by a 28-yard scoring run with

4:15 left to play.

Along with Price’s 165 yards, Domzalski added 81 yards on nine carries

and one score, while tight end Ben Weaber caught a career-high six passes for

65 yards. On defense, Anthony Smith had 10 tackles, while Marcus Zimmer-

man made seven tackles and had 2.5 sacks. For East Stroudsburg Marshall

fi nished 16-29 for 215 yards and two interceptions and one score.

Bloomsburg 27, Shippensburg 28

October 24, 2009

BLOOMSBURG--Chase DiFebbo caught an 11-yard scoring pass with 46 seconds left to lift Shippensburg University past Bloomsburg University 28-27 on Saturday afternoon in PSAC Eastern Division showdown. DiFebbo’s catch of the throw from his brother Chad DiFebbo capped a 15-play, 79-yard drive for Shippensburg. Driving to the Bloomsburg 11-yard line and facing a third and six, Chad DiFebbo threw to Chase in the corner of the end zone for the game tying points. Kyler Ford converted the extra point to put Shippensburg in front 28-27 with 46 seconds to go. Bloomsburg would drive out to it’s own 47-yard line, but quarterback Dan Latorre was sacked on the game’s fi nal play giving Shippensburg the win. Both teams are now tied for the PSAC East lead with one game to play. Should the teams remain tied after next week, the Red Raiders would play for the PSAC championship based on head-to-head competition. Th e Huskies took the early lead in the game when Kenny Domzalski capped a four-play, 65-yard scoring drive with 20-yard run to put the Huskies on top 7-0 with 12:17 left in the fi rst. Shippensburg answered right back with Harris catching an 11-yard pass from Chad DiFebbo to knot the score at 7-7 with 8:36 to play in the fi rst. Bloomsburg wasted little time in regaining the lead, needing just four plays to score with Derrick Price going 25 yards for a 14-7 lead. Th e Huskies extended that lead to 21-7 early in the second quarter when Domzalski ran a career-long 77 yards for a score on the fi rst play of the drive with 10:15 to go in the second period. Shippensburg, though, trimmed the lead 21-13 by halftime with a pair of fi eld goals from Ford of 19-and 38-yards. In the third period, the Huskies took the second half kickoff and got a 39-yard fi eld goal from Jon Koenig to extend its lead to 24-13 with 10:15 to play in the quarter. Bloomsburg later had a chance to extend the lead, but a 40-yard fi eld goal from Koenig went wide left. Th e Red Raiders answered later in the period when Mike Frenette scored on a 55-yard run and then converted a two-point conversion to pull within three at 24-21 with 45 seconds to go in the third. On Bloomsburg’s ensuing drive the Huskies moved to the Shippensburg seven yard line with the help of a 41-yard pass from Latorre to Chris Tressler. Th e Shippensburg defense stiff ened, though, and forced the Huskies to settle for a 24-yard fi eld goal from Koenig with 12:30 to go in the game setting up Shippensburg’s late game heroics. Chad Difebbo was 13-30 for 195 yards and two scores for the Red Raid-ers with Harris catching nine passes for 147 yards and one score. Defensively, Cody Fleming made 12 tackles for the Red Raiders. Domzalski fi nished with 121 yards rushing and two scores for Bloomsburg, while Price totaled 109 yards and one score. On defense, Anthony Smith made 14 tackles to lead the Huskies.
