Whitten Soccer Complex

The Whitten Soccer Complex is one of the most utilized on-campus facilities at BelmontUniversity. In the fall of 2008, the field was transformed into the media headquartersfor the Presidential Town Hall Debate and the team played at four different venues overthe course of the season. August of 2009 marks the return of the team to its home field.

Complete with an in-ground sprinkler system and lights, Whitten Soccer Complex ishome to both soccer programs and various intramural activities. The Bermuda grass fieldsees extensive action while adding much needed “green space” to the campus. Besidesthe use for varsity soccer and intramural sports, the field is encircled by a lighted walk-ing track intended for use by the entire Belmont community. Bleacher seating for up to500 spectators is located on the east side of the complex while there is plenty of roomfor additional fans when necessary. The women’s soccer team went 6-2-0 at home intheir first season at the Whitten Soccer Complex, highlighted by a 1-0 victory over SECmember Mississippi State in 1998.

The U.S. Women’s Soccer team, seen here meeting during practice, used theWhitten Soccer Complex as a practice site before their match with Canada in

Nashville during July of 2004.

A foundation of champi-onship tested veterans anda crop of athletic newcom-ers could be the exact for-mula to help the Belmontwomen's soccer team makeits second ever appearanceat the NCAA Tournament.

Over four short years, HeadCoach Lisa Howe has cata-pulted the Bruins from nearthe bottom of the AtlanticSun rankings to their first-ever regional ranking enroute to the program's firstconference tournamenttitle. Last season, Belmontposted its second consecu-tive 13 win season.

"I believe that since I have been coaching at Belmont that theteam has gotten a little better each year," Howe said. "That ismy goal again this year."

I am looking forward to working with different dynamic combi-nations of players. With this kind of depth and speed, we willbe able to put the opponent's defenders under high pressure themajority of the game.

Having reached the mountaintop with such an inexperiencedsquad, Howe has sculpted a plan to give the program stayingpower. Two years ago, she drafted this year's schedule to havethe team be tested often by NCAA Tournament caliber teams. She also put wheels in motion to recruit one of her strongest, most athletic rookie classes since heading up the program.

"I plan to change our style a little. We have mostly absorbedpressure and counter attacked. I think we will be able todefend and win the ball back higher up the field. I believe wewill be able to possess the ball more. We were young and inex-perienced last year. We have the experience, talent, and depthto be a better soccer team.

"One of the biggest differences in our team is our depth. Ourteam will be better prepared for our opponents, because wehave 25 field players who can play 11v11 full field everydayagainst competitive players.

"Another difference in our team is our size, strength, speed, andathleticism. I say it every year, but this group is more athleticthan the last. Our athletes will need time to work together, butwe have greater potential than ever.

"I know my style is not that of a soccer purist, but I plan to havea good balance of possession combined with using as many play-ers in 90 minutes as possible. I plan to pressure teams and runat defenders relentlessly for the entire game. Bruin fans aregoing to get to watch a fast, exciting, athletic team. We willimprove and learn to control a game as the season progresses."

Forwards

The crew in the front will give the Bruin coaching staff manyoptions for attack. Anchored by six veterans, seniors ElizabethBublis and Annie Musacchio, juniors Erica Carter, MadisonPorter and Patience Whitten, the forwards increased in depthwith four additions which should boost Belmont's scoring oppor-tunities early and often.

Musacchio led Belmont in scoring last year with a whoppingeight goals. The Nashville, Tenn., native, who played in all 23matches and started all but two, was named to the Atlantic SunAll-Tournament team. Classmate Bublis also played in all 23contests and collected four points off one goal and two assistsduring the season.

Marietta, Ga., native Porter, who played in all 23 contests, notched three goals last season, good for third best on the teamwhile Carter, who hails from Spring, Texas, was tied for fourthin goals last year and played in all but two matches. Memphis,Tenn., native Whitten picked up an assist and made appearancesin all 23 games.

"Erica is healthy after playing injured all of last season. She isso difficult to defend. Maddie is always a threat to get behinddefenders as a sub. Patience hustles to create chances for herteammates. Even with all this returning talent, we are addingthree more players who have the talent and ability to start -Lauren Paynter, Spencer Laufer, and Danielle Stolt."

Kailee Hawkins was a four-year starter at Wakefield High, earn-ing Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior. The Raleigh,N.C. native helped her club team, CASL Spartan Elite, to thesemifinals of the North Carolina State Cup in 2009 and a fourth-place finish in the Region Premier League East the previous year.

"Kailee gives us depth at outside back. She will allow us to playa high pressure, up-tempo style of defense," Howe said.

Danville, Ky., native Lauren Paynter received All-Region honorseach of her four years atBoyle County High School. The 2008 Region MVP alsoearned All-State honors fourtimes. She set a BCHSrecord for goals in a career(117) and also recorded 48career assists.

"Lauren compliments ourother forwards. She is adifferent player thanBublis, Erica, and Lofty.Lauren is going to make ourattack dynamic and diffi-cult to predict."

Spencer Laufer was a two-time First Team All-District

honoree and was the leading scorer at Westside High School. The Houston, Texas native was named 5A Offensive MVP in 2008and received Second Team All-District honors.

"Spencer brings great potential. We plan to take advantage ofher size, strength, and athleticism while she develops as a play-er in our system."

Kingwood, Texas native Lauren Trappey helped Kingwood Highto three consecutive 5ADistrict Championships(2006, 2007, and 2008).The team was also two-time Regional Finalist(2007, 2008). Trappey, who served as team cap-tain in 2009, was votedAll-District twice.

"Lauren is a versatile play-er. She is skillful andworks hard. Having play-ers like Lauren is going tomake us well prepared forevery game."

Florida Atlantic transferDanielle Stolt brings solidcollegiate experience tothe Bruins. After redshirt-ing her freshman year, she was ranked fourth on the team inshots and shots on goal last season. The Morris Plains, N.J.native earned numerous accolades at Parsippany Hills Highincluding, four-time All-Iron Hills Conference player, four-timeAll-Morris County performer and three-time All-Area honoree. The two-time team MVP also received All-State honors in 2004,2006 and 2007 and owns the school's record for career goals with80.

"Danielle is more of a natural goal scorer than our other for-wards. She is agile and skillful with the ball."

"This could be our deepest, most experienced, and most talent-ed position. Elizabeth will be a four-year starter for us," Howesaid. "She is the hardest working player and creates so manychances for herself and others just with hard work and desire.Jamie will be a full time forward this year after playing multi-ple positions last year. After making the All-Freshman Team, Ithink she will be even more productive this year.

Midfielders

"Because of some changes, Jayme Trocino is the only returningstarter in the midfield. She will be joined there by Annie, whoplayed forward last year and was our leading scorer," Howe said."Alex Morgado has experience in the midfield. Lydia gainedexperience with the team last spring after transferring inJanuary. Alex Mindel is recovering from knee surgery butshould be back early in the season. Laura has a good chance tostart because of her fearlessness and tactical awareness.

"I am looking for our center midfielders to be more of a threatto score with either runs in the box or long range shots. I thinkthey will be dangerous attacking on the dribble out of the mid-field. I plan to change the way our midfielders defend so thatthey have more energy on offense."

Franklin, Tenn., native Trocino, who will anchor this position, played in 22 matches, starting all but one in the middle.Sophomore Jamie Loftis had a steller rookie year, playing in all23 contests and starting all but three. The Hermitage, Tenn.,native was second on the team in goals scored with a total offour.

Macon, Ga., native Laura Harris was a three-time All-Regionselection at First Presbyterian Day School and was twice namedAll-State. As a junior at FPDS, she led the state and her teamin scoring.

"Laura fits a specific need for us in the midfield. I expect herto fill that role right away because of her vision and tacticalawareness. She has great ability in the air and in the tackle.

Lydia Wright joined Bruins after a brief stint at nationallyranked Division II Carson-Newman College. During her time withthe Lady Eagles, Wright netted two goals and recorded fiveassists. The native of Franklin, Tenn., wrapped up her highschool career at Battle Ground Academy where she was a four-time All-State selection.

"Lydia adds sophisticated weight and texture to her passes andshots. Our forwards will benefit from Lydia's entry passes.

Defenders

The lineup of one of the stingiest defenses in the countryremains intact heading into 2009. Anchored by unanimousPreseason All-Atlantic Sun selection junior Jessica Rix, the Bruindefensive line should continue to be a force to reckon with.Other veterans returning in the back include junior MarcelaSanchez, and sophomores Meghan McBride and GretchenSutch.

"We are returning fourstarters and adding sixfreshmen in the back. Thisbodes well for our presentand our future," Howe said."Jessica is one of the mosttalented center backs in theconference. Marcela playswell next to her and gotplenty of her own experi-ence in the spring whenJess had mono. BrandiPhillips will provide depthat center back. She tackleswell and distributes well.

"Morgan and Gretchenreturn as outside backs.

They are good attackingplayers who I have con-verted into outsidebacks. Kailee Hawkins,Vanessa Pepin, andMegan Rock are all solidplayers who will playwell in my system ofusing four different play-ers at this position in thesame game. Jane OwenRobbins and LaurenTrappey have potentialto develop and goodplayers from which tolearn."

Murfreesboro, Tenn.,native Phillips helpedher Siegel High team tothe TSSAA District 7AAAState championship in2008. The 2008 DailyNews Journal Player ofthe Year garnerednumerous accoladesincluding All-Area, All-District, All-Midstate,All-State, All-South, andAll-Region.

"I am very confident inBrandi's shot blockingand heading skills. As acenter back, Brandi willhelp us maintain posses-sion as we go forward."

Ridgeland, Miss., nativeRobbins joins the Bruinsafter completing hercareer at St. JosephCatholic School. Duringher senior year, Robbinswas tabbed team MVPand received First TeamAll-State honors and All-District honors for a sec-ond year.

"Jane Owen is a tough, tenacious defender. Her physical stylewill be difficult for attackers."

Madison, Miss., native Rock completed her high school career atSt. Andrew's Episcopal. The two-time Midfield MVP (2006 and2007) led her team in goals and assists as a junior. Rock, whoalso served as team captain, earned First Team All-State honorsas a senior.

"Megan is a composed distributor of the ball. She can play in a

variety of positions and will develop into a key player for us."

"Like Kailee, Vanessa's athleticism is going to allow us to defendhigher up the field and get our outside backs forward in theattack for the entire game.”

Goalkeepers

Belmont's net continues to be in good hands, under the watch-ful eyes of a trio of returners. Sophomore Sari Lin heads up oneof the strongest keeper corps in the Atlantic Sun. The Carefree,Ariz., native, who played in all but one of the team's 23 match-es, finished her rookie season ranked 29th in save percentage(0.852), 52nd in saves per game (5.5) and 85th in goals againstaverage (0.954) among all NCAA Division I players. She alsobroke into the Belmont record book for most minutes played ina single season (1,980), a record that had not been broken since2001, and tied for second for most shutouts with a total of six.

Scranton, Pa., native Renee Pilch saw action in four contestsduring the season, logging over 188 minutes. She notched a 3-0-0 record and amassed a 0.95 save percentage. Despite notseeing any action on the field during the regular season, AshleyHudak remained a vital cog to netminding machine for theBruins. The Reynoldsburg, Ohio native worked to help keep Linand Pilch on their toes while fine tuning her own skills inside thenet.

"I feel confident in the goalkeeper position. Sari was named tothe All-Freshman Team and she was Tournament MVP after a spe-cial weekend. I expect her to continue to improve with trainingand experience," Howe said. "Renee's strength of being quickoff her line and being able to smother breakaways and closerange shooters has been valuable against Austin Peay,Vanderbilt, and UA. Ashley showed the most progress andimprovement last spring. She has improved all aspects of hergame - shot stopping, crosses, and distribution.

"All three of our goalkeepers are capable of playing against anyof our opponents."

Lisa Howe became the fifth head coach inthe history of the women's soccer programwhen she accepted the position in the springof 2005. In a mere four seasons, she hasrebuilt Belmont's program and has helped it

become a feared contender not just in theAtlantic Sun but in the Southeast region as well.

Belmont shocked the Atlantic Sun in only its second trip to the con-ference tournament by earning its first ticket to the Big Dance in themost dramatic fashion in 2008. After a double overtime tie withKennesaw State, a battle of penalty kicks in the championship gamewould decide the tournament champion and the automatic bid tothe NCAA Tournament. The combination of three consecutive suc-cessful penalty shots and the quick hands of goalkeeper Sari Linenabled the Bruins to punch their dance card for the first time inprogram history. For her heroics inside the net, Lin was crownedTournament MVP, a first for Belmont.

In 2007, the Bruins defied the odds and became the Cinderella storyof the A-Sun. After being chosen to finish eighth in the preseasoncoaches poll, Belmont went on to record the most league wins in its10-year history (6) and finished the regular season in fourth place, the team's best finish to date.

BU was given the third seed in its first appearance in the Atlantic SunTournament and did not disappoint in its first dance, knocking offthe 2006 champion Jacksonville, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. TheBruins faced off against second-seeded Mercer in the semifinals andforced the match to be decided on penalty kicks after finishing witha 1-1 tie after double overtime. Despite falling in the semis, theBruins garnered a new level of respect and cemented its name as ateam to not treat lightly.

In her first year at the helm, two players -- Kari Lennon and AnnaHolt -- received Atlantic Sun postseason honors, the first since 2001,and two more -- Micaela Crowley and Anna Holt -- earned A-Sun

Player of the Weekhonors, a first forBelmont. The acco-lades continued atthe conclusion ofher second yearwith Sarah Brandtearning Atlantic SunSecond-Team hon-ors and AnnieMusacchio receivingan All-FreshmanTeam nod, only thesecond in Belmont'shistory.

The program hasnot only soared onthe field but con-tinues to excel inthe classroomunder Howe's lead-ership. Thirty-oneplayers over thelast three yearshave earnedAtlantic Sun All-Academic honors. Sixteen of those 31 received thedistinction more than twice during their collegiate careers. Of the24 player roster in 2007, over 83 percent earned A-Sun All-AcademicTeam honors. In back-to-back seasons, Meredith Brandt was namedto the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Team, a first for Belmont.

Howe arrived at Belmont after an impressive decade long tenure atJacksonville State where she built the program from scratch. TheGamecocks averaged nearly nine wins per year and reached post-season play six times under Howe's direction. She led JSU to fourseasons with 11 or more wins and earned Atlantic Sun Coach of theYear honors in both 1999 and 2002. A total of 19 all-conference play-ers suited up for JSU during the past decade.

Howe has taken teams to four semifinal appearances at their con-ference tournaments. In 2002 after posting a 12-6-2 record,Jacksonville State fell in the tournament semifinals to eventualchamp UCF. In 2004, the Gamecocks pulled a first round upset ofMorehead State to advance to the Ohio Valley ConferenceTournament semifinals.

Howe was named head coach at JSU in the spring of 1995, just fourmonths before the inaugural season would kick off. Prior to hertenure with the Gamecocks, Howe coached at Berry College whereshe guided the team to a 13-9-1 record in 1994. Her career recordnow stands at 110-115-25 over 12 seasons.

In addition to her head coaching experience, Howe has served as aregion staff coach with the Olympic Development Program. She alsoheaded the Alabama ODP Under-17 Girls Team and was the regionalcoach for the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA)women's team.

Howe's playing career is no less decorated. She helped lead BarryUniversity to four consecutive bids to the NCAA Soccer Tournamentincluding three Final Four appearances, highlighted by a Division IINational Championship in 1989.

Kyle Roelke, who enters his first year as afull-time assistant with the Belmontwomen's soccer program in 2009, brings a

wealth of experience from the sidelinesand the field. No stranger to the Bruins, he spent the 2008 sea-son as a graduate assistant working under head coach Lisa Howeand the previous year working with BU's men's team. His focuswill be working with the Bruins' goalkeepers.

Roelke helped to make 2008 a record setting year for the Bruinsin his first year with the program. BU won its first conferencechampionship allowing them to move on to the NCAA tourna-ment, another program first. Under his tutelage, freshman SariLin had a breakout year inside the net during the historic cam-paign. Lin, who led the conference in save percentage, was sec-ond in shutouts and was third in GAA, received numerous awardsincluding Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP and being named to theFreshman All-Conference team. Lin also went on to capturethree national rankings - 29th in save percentage (0.852), 52ndin saves per game (5.5) and 85th in GAA (0.954).

Last year, Roelke also assisted in leading Father Ryan High Schoolto the girls' state soccer championship, knocking off No. 4nationally ranked Baylor in the state semifinals. He also servedas the Brentwood Soccer Club (BSC) goalkeeping director forboth the boys and girls programs and coached at the BSCAcademy for the nine- and ten-year-old boys. In 2007, he servedas the assistant coach at Centennial High School in Nashville,Tenn., under head coach Sandy Pollock.

As a player for Belmont, the Mishawaka, Ind., native was a threeyear starter and led the Atlantic Sun in shutouts during his sen-ior year. The three-time A-Sun Conference Player of the Weekstill holds numerous career goalkeeping records for the Bruins.

After the completion of his undergraduate career, Roelke spenttime all over the world playing soccer, including training withRoss County of the Scottish First Division, Inverness CaledonianThistle of the Scottish Premiership and Afturelding of theIcelandic Soccer League. In the winter of 2008, he traveled toXelaju, Guatemala to play. Most recently, Roelke played pro-fessionally for the Carolina Giants in Puerto Rico. He also sawaction with two PDL teams, the Nashville Metros, where he wasa two-year captain and four-year starter, and the IndianaInvaders.

In the mid-1800s, the campus was known as Adelicia Acklen'sBelle Monte estate. The antebellum mansion remains today, flanked by university buildings separated in age by a century. The first educational institution on the estate was the originalBelmont College (1890-1913), offering elementary schoolthrough junior college education to young ladies. The schoolmerged with Ward Seminary to become the prestigious Ward-Belmont School for Women (1913-1951) and in 1951 became thecoed Belmont College. In 1991, the college became BelmontUniversity and, this year, began the 115th year of higher educa-tion on this site.

Belmont continually reflects its rich heritage as it excels in theacademic area. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report namedBelmont University as a most cited “School to Watch” in its cur-rent research, a high honor that indicates the strength ofBelmont’s reputation among universities nationwide. Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves as President of Belmont University, a position he has held since April 2000.

During his tenure the university’s enrollment has risen by nearly 70 percent while the campus itself has expanded significantly withthe additions of the Curb Event Center and Beaman Student Life Center, the Gordon E. Inman Center, the Troutt Theater complexand several new residence halls and parking garages. But Dr. Fisher’s greatest sense of accomplishment comes not from new cam-pus structures, stronger endowments or a larger student body. Rather, he measures achievement through witnessing education’simpact on each individual student.

“The student is the focus of all our efforts here at Belmont,” Fisher said, “and our top priority is meeting the needs of those students. My life's mission is tohelp create experiences that transform people, especially students, in ways that enable them to become all they were created to be.”

Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Fisher was vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas State University for four years and was dean of the School ofBusiness at Henderson State University, his alma mater, for 10 years. Fisher earned a B.S.B.A. from Henderson State, an M.B.A. from the University of Memphisand a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas.

In addition to his success as both faculty member and higher education administrator, Fisher is also an accomplished author with his most recent work, LifeIs a Gift: Inspiration from the Soon Departed, released in 2008. Co-authored with his wife Judy, Life Is a Gift features a collection of lessons learned frominterviews with 104 terminally ill patients of Alive Hospice in Nashville. Dr. Fisher previously co-authored Real Dream Teams: Seven Practices Used by World-Class Team Leaders to Achieve Extraordinary Results, published by St. Lucie Press, with Belmont’s Vice President of University Advancement Dr. Bo Thomas.

Dr. Fisher has published numerous articles on management and leadership and has consulted with a wide variety of organizations on human resource andstrategic planning issues, including Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Alltel, Arkla Gas and the U.S. Department of Transportation, among others. In 1992, Fisherserved in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a Fulbright Scholar, conducting research and consulting with the National Institute of Public Administration. He also pro-vided a keynote address at the Arabian Society for Human Resource Management Conference in Bahrain in 1998.

Active in his community, Fisher has served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, United Way of MetropolitanNashville, the Country Music Foundation, the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Symphony, the PENCIL Foundation, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Alliance for Public Education, TICUA, Cumberland Region Tomorrow, Fifth Third Bank and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and ExecutiveCommittee. He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Nashville, participates in Nashville’s Agenda, and is a 2001 graduate of Leadership Nashville. Healso serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Arkansas Enterprise Group, a division of Southern Development Bank.

Married for 38 years, Dr. Fisher and his wife Judy share in their commitment to Belmont University. The Fishers are the proud parents of three grown chil-dren and have two wonderful sons-in-law and four perfect grandsons.

Now entering his 14th year as Director of Athletics,Mike Strickland has led Belmont's Department ofAthletics through its infancy stages as a new NCAADivision I program to become one that sees annualsuccess on the field and in the classroom. Duringhis tenure at Belmont, the program has expandedthe number of teams it fields, joined the AtlanticSun Conference, enhanced its facilities, and estab-

lished a reputation producing winning teams and distinguished student-ath-letes.

Since arriving in Nashville in 1996, Strickland has overseen the inception ofsix new sports at Belmont: women's soccer, women's golf and men's andwomen's indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, the University hasbuilt the Frances Bond Davis Tennis Courts and the Whitten Soccer Complex,as well the most recent partnership with Metro Parks for athletic fields atRose Park. This exciting new venture will house Belmont baseball, softball, soccer, and track & field. Two of the most important achievements of histenure at Belmont are the acceptance of Belmont into the Atlantic SunConference and the opening of the Curb Event Center. During his tenure,Strickland has overseen a program expansion from 11 to 17 teams of compe-tition, spearheaded membership into the Atlantic Sun Conference, spurredathletic facility enhancement and forged a reputation of producing winningteams and distinguished student-athletes. In 2008, Belmont became thefirst school in Atlantic Sun Conference history to represent the league inthree consecutive NCAA Men's Basketball Championships. Adding conferencechampionships in women's cross country, women's soccer and volleyball dur-ing the past academic year, Belmont Athletics has won a staggering 26Atlantic Sun Conference Championships since becoming a member institutionin 2001-02 - far and away the league standard. In addition, the school hashosted nine conference championships over the past five years, most recent-ly the 2006 A-Sun Volleyball Championship.

Strickland has taken a leadership role in the A-Sun serving as chairman of thetournament committee and presently serves as a member of the conference'smembership committee. As well as the program's success on the field, histenure has seen the building of the exquisite Curb Event Center. The $52 mil-lion facility, which opened in the fall of 2003, has become the centerpiece ofthe athletics program. The complex houses a new 5,000-seat arena for bas-ketball and volleyball, locker rooms for all sports, a training facility andweight room, as well as administrative offices for the Athletic Department.

Off the field, the athletic department has made academic achievement thecornerstone of its definition of success. Belmont has won the Atlantic SunAcademic Trophy seven of the past eight years. The Bruins boasted over two-thirds of their student athletes with a grade-point average of 3.0 or betteron a 4.0 scale during the past academic year. Belmont is the only school towin the trophy five straight times (2002-2006). Also of significance, Belmonthas earned distinction from the NCAA in each of their Academic Progress Rate(APR) reports. Strickland brings varied years of experience to the program, including nine years as athletics director at Murray State University prior tocoming to Belmont. While at Murray State, Strickland served on numerousOhio Valley Conference committees as well as serving on the NCAA IAA foot-ball advisory committee and the NCAA rifle committee. Prior to serving atMurray State, Strickland was an Associate Athletics Director at Wichita StateUniversity from 1983-87, where he was responsible for all business operationsfor the department.

Strickland earned his bachelor's degree in political science from GeorgiaSouthern University and a master's degree in public administration from theUniversity of Georgia. In June of 2009,Strickland received the Under ArmourNational Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division ISoutheast Region A.D. of the Year Award. Strickland was honored at the annu-al NACDA convention in Orlando, Fla.

Strickland is married to the former Martha Thomas, an English instructor atNashville State Community College. The couple has two children - LeannaElizabeth, an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee, and SaraGrace, a Belmont University graduate who is married to Jared Vaughn - andone grandchild, Jacob.
