SALT LAKE CITY AREA

Greetings to the Rocky Mountain Chapter.

I was lucky enough to attend GBW’s “Stan-dards of Excellence in Bookbinding” conference in San Francisco this year, and was surprised to see so many of the Rocky Mountain chapter members in attendance! I heard from Chris McAfee that we had the most mem-bers in attendance of any chapter! If you weren’t there, don’t worry — there is always another one coming up. The next Standards is going to be held in Tucson, Ari-zona, I hope to see more of our members there.

The Utah portion of the Chapter held a gather-ing at Jeanne and Al Thelin’s house. About ten people attended and shared a potluck dinner. We talked about upcoming workshops, and future book gatherings, and about the projects that we are all working on. Personally, I am excited about the upcoming workshops and events for the coming year. See the “Utah” heading in the inte-rior of this newsletter for the upcoming workshop with Tini Muira.

West Side Books T Art Show & Bookstore Re-opening We’re extremely thankful this year that the storefront transformation is nearing completion. (Whew!)

On Sunday, December 13, we’ll open the doors, ready or not, for the celebration. We’re also grateful to have a show of original prints by Sharon Brunn to celebrate this new space. We’re calling the show: “Everyday Things” as many of Sharon’s pieces have as subject everyday objects in her life, but her treatments of them are not at all ordinary. Hard to describe, so just come and see. Starting at 6pm that evening, we’ll have an open house with Aztec dancers blessing the space, the art show, music (musical artists

tba), refreshments and general visiting and hob-nobbery. Best wishes all, -Lois & Jimmy

Concertina Spine Sewn on Tapes

The concertina fold is also known as an accordion or zig-zag fold.

When a piece of paper is folded into a concertina and used to create the spine of a book, some appealing features are quickly recognized. For example, the concertina spine is ideal for accommodating the thickness of signatures of pages with fold outs, or material such as a photograph that is collaged onto the surface of the page. Another advantage of the non-adhesive concertina spine structure is that the book can open at.

In this workshop you can expect to learn (1) to make a good, narrow concertina fold--one that stacks up squarely, (2) to evaluate papers for characteristics conducive to a successful concertina, and (3) to modify less than ideal papers in order to make them practical for use as a concertina.

One of Daniel's contributions to this structure is the inclusion of a wire along the spine edge of the cover board. The wire becomes an anchor and a pivot that acts very successfully as a hinge. This creates exceptionally harmonious movement of the tapes, concertina, and covers.

This workshop is a good opportunity to explore many of the issues essen-tial to creating a successful structure.

All levels of experience are welcome.

Daniel E. KelmBefore Daniel settled into his career in the book arts, he received formal training in chemistry and taught at the University of Minnesota.

Daniel's experience with books began over thirty years ago with employ-ment in various production studios where he learned progressively more specialized traditional bookbinding techniques.

In 1983 he opened his own studio, now called The Wide Awake Garage, where he designs and produces artist's books, interpretive ne bindings, and book sculptures.

He is known for his innovative structures and extensive knowledge of materials.

Daniel founded the Garage Annex School for Book Arts in 1990.

Gabrielle Fox WorkshopA Review by Kathy English

Gabrielle Fox taught a full class how to bind an elegant miniature book in full leather. Her two day workshop was well organized, unhurried and delightfully fun. The new Book Arts facility at the Marriott Library facilitated her teaching because of its thoughtful design. Gabrielle’s demonstra-tions were easily seen by everyone thanks to a zoom-in camera overhead.

I was glad to practice using my knife to pare down leather. It was good to see that this skill definitely improved with time. Each participant left with a completed full leather bound book that felt won-derful to hold and opened smoothly. Gabrielle brought several of her own miniatures for us to look at and glean ideas from. She also came with an array of miniature text blocks which individu-als could purchase to later bind on their own.

As always, time spent with Gabrielle rewarded the participants with invaluable knowledge.

Curator Alicia McKim asked artists for permission so that some work could be handled. She designed the show with the high table to facilitate this; she felt it was important not to ignore this as-pect of the book. Alicia is in the back-ground.Boundless
