West Virginia University President James P. Clements named

former West Virginia University and NFL quarterback and Academic All-American Oliver Luck as West Virginia University’s director of intercollegiate athletics, effective July 1.

Luck, 50, president and general manager of the Houston Dynamo soccer franchise in Houston, Texas, filled the position upon the retirement of Ed Pastilong on June 30. Pastilong will serve as Athletic Director Emeritus through 2012.

The two-time Academic All-American is a member of the Academic All American Hall of Fame and was a Rhodes Scholar finalist. He was also a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete, graduating from WVU magna cum laude in 1982 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

“Oliver Luck is someone who has succeeded at the highest of levels at everything he has done – from his college and professional football playing days to his academic pursuits and his professional business career,” said President Clements. “He is the clear choice to carry forward what has truly been a golden era in athletics. I am thrilled to welcome Oliver back to West Virginia and WVU, and I am confident that he will do an outstanding job.”

“It is truly an honor to be selected to serve my alma mater as athletic

director, and to succeed such a fine gentleman as Ed Pastilong, who has served WVU so well for so many years,” Luck said. “My passion and love for West Virginia University has never wavered, and to return to a school that has built a solid foundation in academics and athletics over the last two decades is exciting.

“And while it’s a challenging time in intercollegiate athletics with discussions on conference realignments and other issues, I look forward to working with the University administration, athletic staff and coaches and others to remain a successful, attractive and fiscally responsible intercollegiate athletic program,” he said.

A native of Cleveland, Luck played quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-1981, setting school records for touchdown passes and completions, and leading the team to a Peach Bowl victory over Florida as a senior. He ended his career as a three-year starter with school records of 43 career touchdown passes and 466 completions out of 911 passing attempts. His 5,765 career passing yards rank him fourth on the school’s all-time passing list. He was named MVP in 1980 and 1981, and also earned the 1981 Louis D. Meisel Award for the WVU scholar athlete with the highest grade-point average. He was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

In 1982, he was selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers, and either started or played back-up quarterback through the 1986 season. During that time, he earned his law degree from the University of Texas cum laude.

After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the National Football League and President and CEO of NFL Europe.

In 2001, he became chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, overseeing the development and management of over $1 billion of professional sports and entertainment venues in Houston: Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros; Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans and the Livestock Show and Rodeo; and the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets.

He became president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos in 2005, and the team won two MLS Cup championships in his first two years in the position.

He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have four children: Andrew, the starting quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate at Stanford; Mary Ellen, a freshman volleyball player at Stanford; daughter Emily, a high school junior; and 7th grade son, Addison.

The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics fully subscribes to and will conscientiously abide by the rules, regulations and statutes of those organizations and agencies having jurisdiction over the conduct of its athletics program. Specifically, the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will adhere to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Principles of Conduct of Intercollegiate Athletics set forth in the NCAA Constitution and all regulations thereto in its then applicable bylaws.

The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics:

a: subscribes to high standards of academic quality as well as breadth of academic opportunities.

b: strives in its athletics program for national excellence and prominence. Accordingly, the recruitment of student-athletes and emphasis on and support of athletics are national in scope.

c: recognizes the dual objective in its athletic program of servicing the University community and the general public.

d: believes in offering extensive opportunities for varsity intercollegiate athletics for men, women and minorities.

e: sponsors football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics and women’s soccer at the highest feasible level of competition.

f: believes in scheduling all athletic contests primarily with other Division I institutions as a reflection of the goal of maintaining an appropriate competition level in the sports program.

g: is committed to financing the athletics program from private revenues generated by the Department of Inter-collegiate Athletics. All revenues supporting athletics shall be controlled by the institution.

h: considers the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of the student-athletes paramount.

J unior women’s basketball guard Liz Repella and senior linebacker Reed Williams

were selected as the recipients of the 2010 Red Brown Cup, pre-sented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstanding all-around student-athletes.

The Red Brown Cup encompass-es the student-athlete’s athletic, academic and civic achievement as selected by the WVU Athletic Council to annually award the top male and female student-athletes. The award is given in memory of Robert “Red” Brown, former WVU coach and athletic director.

Repella, a Steubenville, Ohio, na-tive, helped the WVU women’s bas-ketball team to a school-record 29 wins, a school-record 13 BIG EAST

victories and an NCAA Tournament second round appearance for the third time in the last four years.

Last season, Repella, who has

68 career and consecu-

tive starts, garnered

all-BIG EAST first-team hon-

ors, was named to

the BIG EAST and preseason WNIT all-tour-nament teams and was named to the pre-season all-con-ference team. A WBCA all-Region I nominee

for the State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team, Re-pella was a co-captain last sea-son, av-eraging a team-

best 13.9

points and was third in rebounds (5.9) steals (49) and assists (40). She recorded 28 double-figure games with seven 20-point efforts. She scored her 1,000th career point in the win at Providence, and now shows 1,141 for her career, good for 21st all-time at WVU.

Academically, Repella boasts a 3.95 GPA in exercise physiol-ogy and was one of five student-athletes nationally to be named an ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American. She is a five-time WVU Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll member, two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and three-time WVU President’s List (4.0) honoree. A five-time Dean’s List recipient, Repella gar-nered the 2009 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award for women’s basketball and is a two-time academic all-district II first team honoree.

In the community, Repella has taken part in the “Adopt-A-Grand-parent” program at the Heritage Home, is the team’s representa-tive on the Student-Athlete Adviso-ry Committee and is a camp volun-teer at the Boys & Girls Club. She also has visited Ruby Memorial Children’s Hospital, taken part in the Suncrest and Westover Middle School Read Aloud programs and has been a part of the Girl Scouts Adopt-A-Player, Hundred High School’s Girl’s Basketball Camp and the Youth Academy (Fairmont) Strength & Conditioning Clinic.

Williams, a Moorefield, W.Va., native, helped lead WVU to a 42-9 record during his career, with four bowl appearances, including three New Year’s Day wins and two BCS wins. He helped WVU achieve national rankings for 50 weeks during his career and was named WVU’s 2009 Defensive Player of the Year, given the Ira Errett Rodg-ers Award for leadership and was named a 2009 team captain. An all-BIG EAST second-team per-former last year, Willliams also was named the 2007 Fiesta Bowl Defensive MVP. He finished his career with 253 tackles, 68 com-ing in 2009.

In the classroom, the four-year letterwinner maintained a 3.87

GPA in finance and marketing and was named the BIG EAST’s 2009 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Williams was one of just 16 student-athletes from all divi-sions to earn a spot on the prestigious Na-tional Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete team and garnered 2009 ESPN The Maga-zine/CoSIDA Academic All-American second-team honors after earning first-team honors in 2007. Wil-liams also was named the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl Scholar Athlete and was a four-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, WVU Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll, Dean’s List and National Football Foundation’s Hampshire Honor Society member. He is also a member of Golden Key National Honor Society and was one of 10 students from around the state selected for the Huntington Bank Junior Board of Directors (young executive program).

Off the playing field, Williams has volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club throughout the state and participated in reading pro-grams and local hospital visits. A Special Olympics volunteer, Williams also has assisted with Christmas shopping for underprivi-leged children, served as a guest speaker for many local events, such as the Marion County Divi-sion of State Police child advocacy fundraiser and participated in reading days.

FRED SCHAUS CAPTAIN’S AWARD

Women’s track and field captain Keri Bland, women’s

soccer captain Carolyn Blank and men’s basketball captain Da’Sean Butler were as this year’s recipients of the 2010 Fred Schaus Captain’s Award, presented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstand-ing varsity team captains.

The winners must display out-standing sportsmanship and leader-ship, representing WVU well in all aspects. Winners are selected by the WVU Athletic Council to award annually the top male and female captains.

A Fairview, W.Va., native, Bland won the Schaus Award for the

second straight year. The owner of three All-Ameri-ca accolades so far this season, she is the only

female athlete in WVU annals to earn

three All-America honors in three different sports in one season (cross country

and indoor and outdoor track in

2008). Bland is also one of just two three-time cross country All-Americans in school history.

This past cross country season, Bland, a three-year captain, helped the cross country team to a sixth-place national finish at the 2009 NCAA champi-onships, as she earned her third career cross country All-America honor with a 34th-place

finish (20:45). She also garnered all-region honors for the fourth time in her career (just the third Moun-taineer to do so) with an 18th-place at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals.

In indoor track, Bland garnered two All-America honors and helped WVU to the highest finish in school history with a 10th-place finish at nationals. She qualified for the na-tional mile finals, becoming the first Mountaineer in more than a decade to do so, and finished with a time of

4:42.79, good for eighth place. She also earned All-America honors as a member of the distance medley relay team that finished eighth na-tionally in a time of 11:16.39.

A member of the WVU Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll and a BIG EAST Academic All-Star, Bland is involved in several com-munity service initiatives such as volunteer coaching with the West Virginia Fly-ers Indoor Track Club, volunteer-ing with the Jerry Lewis Telethon to benefit muscular dystrophy and being a volunteer reader at Brookhaven Elementa-ry school. She graduated in May with a degree in exercise physiology.

Blank, a Toms River, N.J., native, is the school’s all-time leader in matches started and played with 92. A two-time team cap-tain, Blank was named a 2009 all-BIG EAST first-team selection and NSCAA first team all-Northeast region selection. She was also named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Team of the Season third team – its version of national All-America recognition.

Appearing in 23 games during her senior season at WVU, Blank was a four-year starter. A defensive center midfielder, she was named a second team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Asso-ciation of America (NSCAA) for the second straight year. She led the Mountaineers to a 10th-straight NCAA tournament appearance in 2009, scoring nine points on the season and helping the team post 13 shutouts.

Butler, a Newark, N.J., native, and two-time team captain, earns the award after guiding the men’s basketball team to arguably its finest season in school history. The recipient of the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS award, given to the most outstanding senior in Division I men’s basketball in terms of com-munity service, excellence in the

classroom, outstanding character and competition on the court, Butler finished his career as the win-ningest player in men’s basketball history, showing 107 victories to just 39 losses.

He was named to the John Wooden All-America team and was a Basketball Times first team All-American. A finalist for the Wooden and Naismith awards,

Butler was a first team all-BIG EAST performer, was named

to the NCAA East Region all-tournament team and earned BIG EAST Championship Most

Outstanding Player accolades. Butler hit six game-winning shots for the Mountaineers as a senior this past season and scored 2,095 career points, third-most in school history.

Butler helped WVU to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the 2008 NCAA Sweet 16 and the 2010 NCAA

Final Four. He also helped WVU win its first BIG EAST Champion-

ship this past season.Off the floor, Butler graduated

in May with a degree in multidisci-plinary studies and was a member

of the WVU Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll. He rep-

resented the Mountaineers as a tobacco-free Mountaineer for the statewide Razewv.com campaign and served on the NCAA steering committee during WVU’s re-cent recertification process. He was the men’s basket-ball Student Athlete Advisory Committee representative and made many visits to patients at the WVU hospitals. Butler has attended Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, spoke at the WVU Scholarship dinner in Charleston, called Uni-versity supporters at the annual WVU Foundation Thank-A-Thon and has been a guest speaker for Camp Choosy, West Virginia’s Motor Development Center.

• Reached the BIG EAST Tournament for the third consecutive season. WVU last made three consec-utive conference tournaments from 1996-99.

• Finished with a .305 team batting average, marking the eighth-straight year the Mountaineers have batted above .300.

• Recorded the second-most doubles in school history with 135 and tied the 2003 squad for the fourth-most extra base hits with 201.

• Posted 10 league victories, marking the eighth year in a row of double-digit wins in BIG EAST games.

• Junior Jedd Gyorko became one of the school’s all-time greats after finishing his career as WVU’s all-time leader in batting average (.404), doubles (73), extra-base hits (113) and tied for first place with 35 home runs.

• Reed Williams was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America team for the second time, a first-team selection in 2007 and second team in 2009. That marks four straight years a Mountaineer has been named an Academic All-American.

• Reed Williams was named the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year, giving WVU three of the past five conference scholar athletes. He was also a BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner.

• Finished fourth at the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships with 195.1 points, the second-best score of the season. WVU qualified for its 27th regional championships as the No. 6 seed.

• WVU was host to its seventh regional champion-ship and welcomed 2,144 fans to the WVU Coli-seum, the sixth-best crowd in program history.

• Junior Amy Bieski finished ninth overall at the re-gional championships with 39.1 points, a regional career-best score. She also finished third on beam with a career-best 9.85 score.

• WVU finished third at the East Atlantic Gymnas-tics League (EAGL) Championship with 195.075 points, the squad’s third-best effort of the year. The Mountaineers have finished in the top three in nine of the last 11 championships.

• Bieski finished seventh overall at the EAGL Cham-pionship with 39.1 points. She also finished sixth on floor (9.8).

• Four Mountaineers earned nine all-EAGL honors, including three first team awards.

• Six Mountaineers earned a league-best 11 EAGL weekly honors.

• Fifteen Mountaineers were named to the EAGL all-Academic Team.

• Chelsi Tabor was named the team’s MVP and fin-ished the season ranked 47th in the nation, 10th in the Southeast region and second in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) with a 9.855 vault regional qualifying score (RQS).

• Bieski concluded the year ranked 37th in the na-tion, fourth in the Southeast region and second in the EAGL with a 39.145 RQS.

• Bieski broke onto the WVU all-time career points list this year. She concluded the season ranked 16th with 1,474.9 points. Additionally, she earned a team-best 505.35 points this year, good enough for 15th place on the WVU all-time season points list.

• Bieski earned eight 39.0-plus scores this season, bringing her career total to 15. She is now tied with Mehgan Morris and TeShawne Jackson for fifth place on the WVU all-time list.

• Earned the regular-season GARC title with a 7-0 record. The squad entered the conference championships riding a 17-match regular-season win streak and was the first WVU team since 2001 to enter the postseason undefeated.

• Fourth-year coach Jon Hammond earned his second GARC Coach of the Year honor; he also won in 2008.

• WVU earned 18 all-GARC honors, including eight first team awards for five different Mountaineers. Both totals were program-best marks.

• The Mountaineers shot a nation- and program-best 4697 in a Jan. 21 win over visiting Alaska-Fairbanks (4670). The score was the highest collegiate combined total since the NCAA implemented a 60-shot course for the 2004-05 season.

•Junior Lauren Evans was named second-team all-BIG EAST, marking the first time a Mountaineer has earned all-conference honors since Julie Hockenson in 2005.

•Evans finished the season leading the Mountaineers with 270 kills, 37 service aces, 68 digs and 121 total blocks.

•Junior libero Bonnie West finished the season with 492 digs, putting her fourth on the list for most digs in a single season at WVU. She is also second on WVU’s list for most digs in a career with 1,450, behind Michelle Domas (1,630).

Russ Sharp, a confessed work-aholic who still

made time for friends and family, died March 17, 2010, after a long battle with prostate cancer.

“The WVU community is diminished today with the passing of Russ Sharp,” said WVU President James P. Clements. “He was as fine an individ-ual as you’ll ever come

across - loyal, honest, dedicated to the University, a great friend and colleague. It is rare to find the combina-tion of personal and professional excellence; Russ had both in abundance.”

Sharp, 52, joined WVU in 1999 as assistant athletic director and was promoted to associate athletic director in 2002 and, later, senior associate athletic director for administration and finance. He was responsible for business operations, facilities, game management for football and basketball and human resources. In addi-tion, he directly supervised athletic training, strength and conditioning and equipment operations.

“Russ was one of the finest human beings that I have ever been associated with,” Director of Athletics Ed Pas-tilong said. “He was one of the best athletic administra-tors in the country, and West Virginia University has been extremely fortunate that he was a part of our family.

Sharp is remembered as much for his friendly de-meanor as he is for his tireless drive.

“Russ Sharp was a hidden gem for West Virginia Uni-versity,” Deputy Director of Athletics Mike Parsons said. “His lasting legacy will be seen every day. As we walk through the stadium, the Coliseum or any of our out-standing athletic facilities, you will see a piece of Russ’ labor in each one,” Parsons said. “We have lost an outstanding colleague but we have lost an even better friend. The staff of the athletic department is like family. Russ was part of the fiber of that family.”

Sharp played a major role in renovations and new-projects planning, including the new basketball practice facility, a $19 million project expected to be completed in 2011.

Sharp was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 but even amid chemotherapy treatments he stayed connected to the WVU Athletic Department, checking his e-mail from the hospital bed, welcoming visitors most days and, later, setting up shop at his home and hosting weekly meetings in his living room.

In June of 2008, Sharp was bestowed with the College Athletic Business Management Association Manager of the Year Award, an honor that is annually presented to members who have excelled in the execution of their du-ties and responsibilities in their institutions.

Prior to joining WVU, Sharp was athletic director at Centenary Col-lege from 1994-99. From 1990-94, he served as assistant athletic director for business and internal affairs at Arkansas State, after spending 11 years at West Georgia College, his alma mater. From 1979-89, he served as West Georgia’s athletic busi-ness manager and director of sports medicine. In 1989, he was promoted to as-sistant athletic director for busi-ness affairs and executive director of the Braves Boosters.

Sharp was active on a number of NCAA and confer-ence committees throughout his career and was a mem-ber of CABMA for 23 years, an NCAA rifle committee member and was serving on the BIG EAST championship and competition committee at his death. He has also served on the NCAA peer review team for athletics certi-fication on seven occasions.

A 1983 graduate of West Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in education, Sharp was inducted into the West Georgia Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Sharp donated his body to WVU Hospitals for medical research and educational purposes. In addition to Teri and Matt, he is survived by his mother, Charlotte.
