2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

MEN’S GYMNASTICS8 PENN STATE 2009-2010 WOMEN’S LACROSSE8

Following a 2009 season in which it posted a win-ning record, placed second in the conferencestandings, and advanced to the ALC Champi-onship title game, the Penn State women’s lacrosseteam will take the field in 2010 seeking to buildon that success and surpass those achievements.Towards that end, 10-year head coach SuzanneIsidor returns a squad comprised of 24 letterwin-ners, nine starters, and four All-ALC honoreesthat will be captained by a trio of respected seniorsin eresa Bucci, Margo Josephs, and MarisaLozano. Add to the core group of veterans a smallbut highly regarded and eminently talentedrecruiting class and the Penn State women’slacrosse program is poised to take the next step.

“I am excited about 2010 and the potentialfor this year’s team,” said Isidor. “We had one ofour most successful falls in that we improved andachieved a lot of our goals. e team really grewand leaders emerged. From the freshman all theway up to the seniors, everyone showed improve-ment and the attitude, the work ethic, and thechemistry is some of the best we have had.”

ATTACKDespite being dealt a significant blow in the fallwhen 2009 leading scorer Marisa Lozano was lostfor the season with a knee injury, the Penn Stateattack should remain dangerous with senior EricaMihm (25 goals, 11 assists), a Second Team All-ALC selection a year ago, and junior JenSteadman (14 goals, 10 assists) spearheading theunit.

Senior Mary LeNoir, who sat out the 2009season, also returns, bringing with her 32 gamesof starting experience and 33 career goals. JuniorMary Dean came on strong in the fall and will fig-

ure prominently in the Nittany Lion offense. eattack was bolstered in the offseason with theaddition of gifted newcomers Molly Fernandezand Hayley Sofarnos, who Isidor describes as “twoof the most prepared for the college game as wehave had coming in as freshmen.” Fernandez wasa prolific scorer at the high school level whileSofarnos, a native Australian and the daughter ofits legendary national team coach, boasts animpressive international playing resume.

MIDFIELD“We have seven true midfielders on our roster, allof whom I expect to see playing time and make animpact this year,” said Isidor.

An experienced and productive senior duo ineresa Bucci and Maria Valderas will headlinethe corps. Bucci is the team’s leading scoring mid-fielder with 59 career points while Valderas hasstarted 51 consecutive games. Junior LauraLesnick, who finished third on the team in goalslast season with 22, and sophomore eresaZichelli, a versatile player in the same mold as for-mer Penn State great Jessi Lieb, will also providesignificant contributions on both ends of the field.Maggie Dunbar, a junior, has made a smoothtransition from defense to the midfield and willplay a key role in the transition game. With a yearof college lacrosse under their belts, sophomoresAly Adams and Elaine Welch could be ready tobreak into the line-up.

DEFENSE“We will have a lot of competition for playingtime on defense. We don’t have a lot of experi-ence, but we do have a lot of depth and speed, which will allow us to play an exciting style of

defense,” said Isidor.Anchoring the defense will be senior Margo

Josephs and junior Ashley Boccio. Josephs missedthe final four games of the 2009 season with aknee injury but still led the ALC in causedturnovers. Boccio had a breakout sophomore yearfor which she earned all-conference honors andsome All-America recognition. e speedy JackieEastman, who successfully switched positionsfrom the midfield in the offseason, has proven tobe a tenacious defender and will team well withJosephs and Boccio. A former attacker, juniorKaty Wick has used her hard working approach tomake the quick adjustment to defensive end andwill see action.

Sophomores Ashley Ross and BrittaneyChamberlain and freshman Katie Guy, a memberof the 2009 Canadian World Cup Team, will alsocompete for minutes.

GOALKEEPERSe position of greatest strength, both in terms ofdepth and talent, for the Nittany Lions in 2010may be at goalkeeper.

“We have two of the most talented goalkeep-ers we have had in a long time,” said Isidor. “Bothare tremendously athletic and hard workers. Ithink our defense is very comfortable with both.”

Senior Stephanie Ellis established herself as atop-notch collegiate goalkeeper with a standout2009 season. Starting all 17 games, she rankedsecond in the conference in goals against averageen route to Second Team All-ALC honors. Soph-omore Dana Cahill was promising in limited dutyin her freshman campaign is constantly pushingto get on the field.

Davidson withdrew from the conference in 2005.In June of 2006 Florida announced it would be elevating women’s lacrosse to a varsity sportfor the 2010 season and in October of 2006, the Gators joined the ALC. In February of2007, South Carolina also announced the addition of lacrosse to the varsity roster, and inMarch of 2007, the Gamecocks were admitted to the conference. In 2006 the conferenceapproved a tournament format and 2007 marked the first ALC post-season tournament, with the winner earning the automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. However, in2008 the conference tournament featured only five teams, and the automatic qualificationwas suspended. With Florida sponsoring a varsity team in 2010, the fourth year of the tour-nament, the NCAA bid has been restored and the ALC Championship winner will againearn the league’s automatic berth.

A Winning Traditione American Lacrosse Conference is synonymous with excellence, both on and off thefield. e league has boasted the top conference RPI in five of the eight years of competi-tion, a testament to the depth of the conference. Members of the ALC are consistently foundin the national rankings; the conference typically boasts at least three schools in the top-20polls. e national champion has been a member of the ALC in five of the conference’seight years of existence; the league has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Championshipin six of the eight years. In 2007, three members of the conference were designated as seeds. On an individual basis, student-athletes from the conference have been honored for out-standing performances on a regular basis. e Honda Award, recognizing the top player inthe game, has been presented to a student-athlete from the conference in each of the last fiveseasons, including three times to Kristen Kjellman from Northwestern and twice to Han-nah Nielsen, also from NU. e Tewaaraton Trophy, which honors the premier collegiateplayer, has been awarded to a student-athlete from the conference for four consecutive years, with Kjellman winning twice and Nielsen being honored during the last two seasons. In2009, Northwestern’s Hilary Bowen was named the ESPN e Magazine Academic All-American of the Year. Northwestern’s Kelly Amonte Hiller has earned National Coach of theYear honors in three of the last five seasons.

International Impacte conference has been part of significant lacrosse events as both student-athletes andcoaches have participated in both the World Cup and the Under-19 World Championships. Two members of the 2003 USA World Championship team went on to play lacrosse at con-ference institutions; four current student-athletes at conference schools won a world title in2007 with the USA Under-19 team. In 2005, Hannah Nielsen won a gold medal with theAustralian national team at the IFWLA World Cup; in 2009 Northwestern alumna KristenKjellman, Saran Albrecht, and Lindsay Munday with Ohio State grad Regina Oliver to winthe FIL World Cup.

“Diane’s tragic death left her many friends here andthroughout the country in shock and grief,” said PennState Athletic Director Tim Curley. “She was a youngperson of unlimited possibility. During her career as astudent-athlete, Diane excelled at the highest level.”

Whipple was an integral member of the 1987 and1989 National Championship teams. After her colle-giate career was over, Whipple continued to impact theworld of lacrosse by coaching. After serving as the headcoach at UC San Diego, Whipple became the headcoach at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif.

“Diane brought to those coaching responsibilities thesame dedication and purpose that marked her play asan athlete,” stated Curley. “Our thoughts and prayersare forever with the members of the St. Mary’s teamwho have lost a mentor and friend. Those who knewDiane will forever treasure the memory. She was a mar-velous athlete and, even more important, a teammateof uncommon grace and sensitivity.”
